Faith Leadership

What is the essential question you need to answer in your role as a diocescan

leader?

questions that are not answerable with finality… Their aim is to stimulate thought, to provoke inquiry, and to spark more questions…

- Wiggins and McTighe

The process of making yourself more complete as a faith leader is

driven by your evolving life story. All definitions and concepts are forged on

the anvil of that story.

Page 6: 2013 Superintendents ’ Academy

When and how were you called?

so what is expected of each of us?

One of the carefully nurtured hopes of the Christian apostolate is to set such an example of a good life, to promote the deduction: this person is so good; how good must their God be; how alive they must be because of their faith… - James Osterberger

Br. Stanley CulottaWitness to Faith

The crowds were amazed at Jesus’ sermon, for he taught as one who had great

authority. - Matthew 7:28-29

He was praying in a certain place, and when he had finished, one of his

disciples said to him, Lord, teach us to pray…. - Luke 11:1

Helen CaseyFaithfulness to Prayer

Courage in prayer: a prayer that is not courageous is not a real prayer. The courage to trust that the Lord listens to us, the courage to knock on the door – but you have to ask, seek, and knock. – Pope Francis

If I, therefore, the master and teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash one another’s feet. I have given you a model to follow, so that as I have done for you, you

should also do. -John 13:14-15

Archbishop Patrick FloresFaith filled Servant

The servant leader is servant first. It begins with a natural feeling that one wants to serve. Then conscious choice brings one to aspire to lead. The best test is: Do those served grow as persons; do they while being served, become healthier, wiser, freer, more autonomous, more likely themselves to become servants? –R. Greenleaf

How has the story of your life led you to diocesan leadership? How would you like the story of your life to continue? Who inspires you?

…the formation of disciples requires belief in the mission.

Page 12: 2013 Superintendents ’ Academy

Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the

name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching

them to observe all that I have commanded you.

And behold, I am with you always, until the end of

the age.

The Church exists to evangelize.

Evangelization expresses the Church's identity and completes the mission entrusted to her by her founder, Jesus Christ.

Catechesis is a significant moment in the process of evangelization.

Through comprehensive, systematic instruction and initiation into the life of the community through the Liturgy, sacraments, and service, catechesis deepens and strengthens the believer as a member of the Body of Christ, the Church.

First and foremost every Catholic educational

What is the essential question you need to answer in your role as diocesan

leader?

Am I the visible “re-present-ation”

of Christ to the world?

Page 17: 2013 Superintendents ’ Academy

2. Exist in full communion of heart and mind with the Pope as successor of Peter,

3. Ecclesial identity is shaped by obedience to the bishop of the diocese and to the universal magisterium,

4. Expressed by generous collaboration with ordained and other lay ecclesial ministers alike.
