For the first time since 2008, Aledo ended a season without hoisting a state championship trophy last year. The Bearcats’ quest for a fourth consecutive state title ended with a 42-30 area loss to eventual state champ Denton Guyer. ... Aledo’s victory over Highland Park in last year’s season opener was only the second setback for the Scots in 11 Tom Landry Classic games. ... The Bearcats are ranked No. 3 in both the Associated Press and Dave Campbell’s Texas Football preseason Class 4A state polls.
Monterrey Tec’s visit to Highlander Stadium this season will wrap up a four-year run of the Borregos and Scots squaring off early in the season. Highland Park will take on Little Rock (Ark.) Pulaski Academy at Highlander Stadium in 2014 and 2015. ... Last year, Monterrey Tec played five Texas schools. The Borregos went 2-3 in those games, beating Stephenville, 27-17, and San Antonio Wagner, 27-24. In addition to losing to Highland Park, Monterrey Tec also fell to Aledo and The Woodlands.
This year’s meeting between Sherman and Highland Park will be the 50th in the all-time series. The Scots have owned the Bearcats with 12 wins in the last 13 tries. ... The Bearcats knocked off Texarkana Texas High, 40-23, in the first round of last year’s playoffs. Sherman then fell to Red Oak, 28-17. ... The Bearcats return 13 starters and 42 lettermen to give them a substantial amount of experience coming back for 2013.
Forney bounced back from a tough 1-4 start in 2012 to earn the last playoff spot from District 10-4A. It was the first postseason appearance for the program since 2009. The Jackrabbits also hung tough in a 26-14 bi-district loss to Prosper. ... In each of Forney’s three District 10-4A losses last season, the Jackrabbits gave up 41 or more points. ... Forney is one of seven teams on Highland Park’s schedule who have never beaten the Scots.
Head coach Lance Gary led the Falcons to a 2-8 season in his first year at the helm, which was also the program’s third season of varsity football, in 2012. It was, however, the first season in Class 4A for the Falcons. ... After hammering Terrell, 40-10, to open district play last season, North Forney lost its final six games by an average of 24.1 points per contest. ... Falcons running back Armani Watts (6-0, 185) has committed to Texas A&M.

Last season’s game between Highland Park and Mesquite Poteet was probably the most exciting one of the season for the Scots. On a Thursday night, Highland Park scored a touchdown with 57 seconds left, converted a two-point conversion, and then held on for a one-point victory. ... The Pirates have a new head coach in former defensive coordinator Kody Groves. He replaces Randy Jackson, who moved on to Plano East to take over for Johnny Ringo, who is now the Highland Park athletic director.
Just like its crosstown rival Poteet, West Mesquite also has a new head coach in 2013. Jeff Neill replaces Mike Overton, who led the Wranglers to an 8-3 season that culminated with a 33-25 loss to Frisco Centennial in bi-district. Neill, a former offensive coordinator and assistant head coach for the Wranglers, takes over after Overton left for Mesquite Horn. ... West Mesquite returns all but two offensive starters after averaging 34.2 points per game in 2012.
Creekview was a team with a serious identity crisis last season. The Mustangs finished right at .500, but they had weeks when they looked like one of the best teams in District 10-4A. Case in point: the Highland Park game. The Mustangs battled the Scots until the final whistle before falling by five points. ... Quarterback David Blough should be one of the top signal-callers in the district this season. Last year, as a junior, he threw for 1,777 yards and 17 touchdowns with just three picks.
After ending a 25-year playoff drought in 2009 and following it up with another postseason appearance in 2010, Newman Smith has been on the outside looking in the last two seasons. ... Last year, the Trojans scored seven or fewer points in their final three games. ... Newman Smith has the largest enrollment of any school in District 10-4A. ... After leading the team in receiving last season with 397 yards and a pair of touchdowns, Garrett Browne is making the move to quarterback in 2013.
Terrell will be looking to snap an 18-game losing skid when it opens the season against Rusk, which won last year’s opener, 47-8. The Tigers are tied with Creekview for the most returning starters in the district. ... The defense will have to improve dramatically if Terrell hopes to right the ship. The Tigers surrendered a whopping 50 points per game last season. ... Linebacker Quamyus White provides a bright spot for the Tigers. He is back after recording 134 tackles in 2012.

Statistics can be deceiv-ing. Sometimes they paint a brighter picture of how a team actu-
ally performed, and sometimes they don’t show just how good a team really was. Highland Park’s defense fell into the latter category last season.
Even though the Scots gave up the fewest points per game (15.1) since the 2001 season (12.5), the numbers were even more impressive than they appear. That’s because so many of the points the Scots gave up during their 9-2 campaign came late in games, against the second- or third-team defense.
For example, Monterrey Tec
scored three touchdowns in the final minute of a 34-23 game. The Scots also gave up just seven points in four of their seven District 10-4A games and forced 21 turnovers for the season.
The great news for Highland Park is more than half of the starters on that side of the ball are back. Linemen Jack Cevehra, Andrew Clyde, and
Caz Orr, along with linebacker Tanner Houghton, and defen-sive backs Boomer Backich and Robert Mencke, are all back. Additionally, linebacker Brooks Oden, who saw tons of playing time last season, returns to give the Scots a chance to have one of the best defenses around.
“We’re excited,” Scots head coach Randy Allen said. “We have some outstanding players who play with a lot of intensity. There’s a really strong chemistry
on the defense. They play with kind of a chip on their shoulder because they have something to prove. They’re excited about the season getting started. There’s a lot of reason to be optimistic when you have that much expe-rience returning on defense.”

Orr were second-teamers.“We’re pretty good up
front right now,” defen-sive coordinator Mark Howeth said. “It starts with those three guys up front. As long as those three kids are healthy, we’re going to control the running game. I guess the real question is whether we c a n g e t w h a t we want on a pass rush with three guys, or whether we have to go to a fourth one in some of our blitz schemes? We’ll see how that plays out, but I like what we have right now. If we stay healthy, we have a chance to be as good as we want to be.”
T h e o f f e n s e i s a n entirely different story. Highland Park returns
just one starter in wide receiver Andrew Frost, who caught nine pases for 165 yards and a touch-down last season.
Brooks Burgin steps into the starting quar-terback role two seasons after his brother Brady wrapped up his career as the Scots’ starting sig-nal-caller. With five new starters up front, how well the offensive line gets acclimated will be of vital importance to the success of the offense.
“The defense is going to have to carry a big load and let our offense mature,” Allen said. “Because we have the experience back on defense, we’re opti-mistic we can perform at the high level we’re used to. The offensive guys got lots of experience on the JV Blue team last year. They’re not without expe-
rience; it’s just not at the same level of competition. It doesn’t take guys long to get used to the speed of the varsity level.”
Since playing in the state championship game in 2007, Highland Park has not advanced beyond the third round of the Class 4A state playoffs. Last season, the Scots lost to Frisco, 21-20, in bi-dis-trict. The Raccoons were co-district champions of 9-4A.
“Every once in a while when you get upset, it does bring more focus,” Allen said. “There’s more hurt that goes with it that causes you to think about it more. Your thought is that you’re not going to let it happen again, you’re going to be more focused, and play better. That’s been the focus of our football team since

The Highland Park football program has its own Twitter account, as of a week ago. Last Friday, “HP Scots Football” began tweeting via @highlandparkfb, apparently in response to a question from the team’s most prolific tweeter, junior receiver Andrew Frost.
Frost is one of at least 40 Scots who use Twitter. They’re joined on the social network by at least one of their coaches, Tristan Weber (@WeberCoach), not to mention Park Cities People, which pro-vides in-game updates via @pcpeople.
By our count, only two of those 40
players’ tweets are protected. That means anyone with Internet access can see all the random thoughts sent out by the other Scots. And we’re here to tell you that many of those thoughts can’t be printed in a family newspaper.
Word to the wise, wiseguys: Many college football coaches have gone on record — on Twitter — as saying that they stopped recruiting an athlete because of his tweets. And that mindset can’t be unique to coaches. You have to consider that college admissions officials and potential employers will take a look as well. So think before you tweet.

Aledo 31, SCOTS 12: The three-time defending state champion Bearcats scored 17 unanswered points in the sec-ond half to break open a close game at the Tom Landry Classic. The loss snapped a 26-game regular-season winning streak for Highland Park and was the first sea-son-opening setback for the Scots since 2004.
SCOTS 34, Monterrey (Mexico) Tec 23: Even though the Borregos were com-ing off a stunning upset victory over Stephenville, Highland Park bounced back from its opening loss nicely. Behind three touchdowns (two rushing, one passing) from quarterback Jet Tuma, the Scots raced out to a 34-3 lead after three quarters. Monterrey Tec scored three
touchdowns in the final minute of the game.
SCOTS 35, Sherman 21: Quarterback Jet Tuma continued to show off his run-ning prowess with 78 yards and four touchdowns on the ground. Meanwhile, teammate Hank Howard dismantled the Sherman defense with 189 yards and a touchdown on nine carries. Tuma sealed the victory with a 9-yard touchdown run with 1:20 left to play. The Highland Park defense forced four turnovers.
SCOTS 42, Forney 7: Highland Park
was the only team to return to District 10-4A after realignment, but the first game against a district foe looked a whole lot like the norm. Only an 18-yard
touchdown pass with 10 seconds left prevented Forney from being shut out. The Highland Park defense limited the Jackrabbits to just 200 yards of total offense, including just 58 yards on the ground.

Highland Park rattled off 43 unanswered points to cruise to the victory. The Scots rushed for 333 yards and racked up a mind-blowing 21 first downs in the first half alone.
SCOTS 20, Mesquite Poteet 19: Trailing 19-12 with less than three minutes to play, the Scots lost the ball on downs. But Highland Park stopped Poteet short on a fourth down to get the ball back with 1:52 on its own 20-yard line. After a 60-yard pass from Jet Tuma to Anthony Vallera, the Scots scored on a Hank Howard 2-yard touchdown run with 57 seconds left to cut the lead to one. Tuma then ran in the 2-point conversion.
SCOTS 41, West Mesquite 21: In a game most figured would be a tough one for the Scots, the game lived up to that bill-ing in the first half. The Wranglers led, 21-14, at intermission before Highland Park broke things wide open with a huge second half.
SCOTS 28, Creekview 23: After being smoked by Forney (44-21) and Poteet (52-7) in back-to-back weeks, Creekview looked primed to be the victim of a third straight whipping when the Scots rolled into Standridge Stadium. Instead, Highland Park got quite a scare from the Mustangs. The Scots led, 21-17, and
then went ahead by 11 with an 8-yard touchdown run by Jet Tuma in the third quarter. Creekview pulled to within five points with a touchdown. The ensuing two-point conversion attempt failed.
SCOTS 58, Newman Smith 7: Highland Park got back to blowout mode to close out the regular season with a pair of home games against overwhelmed opponents. Newman Smith could manage only 296 yards and one touchdown in falling to the Scots. Four different HP receivers — Andrew Frost, Hunter Feagans, Charles Hubbard, and Andrew Richardson — caught touchdown passes.
SCOTS 56, Terrell 7: The Scots wrapped
up the regular season by making sure Terrell finished without a victory in 2012. Jet Tuma threw three touchdowns in a game that was never anywhere close to being competitive. The victory ran Highland Park’s district winning streak, which dates back to 2009, to 28 straight games.
Frisco 21, SCOTS 20: Facing a co-district champion in the first round, Highland Park had its earliest playoff exit since 2004. After scoring on a Rob Williams 3-yard run, Highland Park missed the extra point. That allowed Frisco to take the lead after scoring on a 28-yard touch-down pass with 1:24 to play. Jet Tuma threw an interception on the ensuing possession to end the Scots’ season.
