Welcome to the 2013 Cortona Sessions for New Music! We are so excited to be back in Cortona for our fourth summer. Each summer, we return to Cortona to be immersed in the act of creation and performance, and each year, we leave Cortona with the drive, desire, and energy to continue on this challenging but supremely rewarding path.

We hope you all find this same energy here, beneath the Tuscan Sun and atop these ancient walls. It is always a striking juxtaposition how the timelessness and history that lies all around us in Cortona can inspire such modern thought, creativity, and artistic adventure. Breathe deeply as you walk past the jasmine along the road, stop often and admire the perfection of the ancient buildings surrounding you, and never miss an opportunity to savor a gelato or a nice glass of chianti. These experiences will become part of you and will influence your art long after the Sessions have ended.

ABOUT THE CORTONA SESSIONS

The Cortona Session for New Music was founded in 2010 by Michael Kirkendoll and Mary Fukushima. Its intention is to encourage the collaboration between young composers and performers in the creation and performance of new music – both during the Sessions, and throughout each of our musical lives. Fellows of the Sessions receive support from each other and from our faculty long after their time in Cortona has concluded. Works premiered at the Sessions have been performed by Cortona Sessions faculty and students at national and international conferences and at new music festivals around the U.S.

We are particular proud of the accomplishments of our Fellows. Past Fellows of the Cortona Sessions have made great strides in spreading our mission throughout the U.S., starting new-music series in Miami, Dallas, Colorado, and Los Angeles. One performance Fellow whose first new-music experience was at the Sessions has now been accepted into the masters program in contemporary performance at the Manhattan School of Music. A composition Fellow from the first season was recently a finalist for the Rome Prize. Many Fellows have gone on to graduate programs at esteemed institutions around the world.

We are very proud of all of our past Fellows and look forward to calling each of you ‘Fellows’ in a few short weeks.

FACULTY BIOS

KIVIE CAHN-LIPMAN, CELLO

Kivie Cahn-Lipman holds degrees from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music and The Juilliard School, and he is a Doctoral candidate at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. He is the founding cellist of the International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE), and the director of the new period-instrument ensemble ACRONYM. From 2005-2012 he was a Lecturer in Music in a full-time position shared between Mount Holyoke College and Smith College.

Kivie has recorded with ICE on the Naxos, New Focus, Bridge, New Amsterdam, Tzadik, Kairos, Mode, and Nonesuch labels. A CD/DVD set of music by Iannis Xenakis on Mode Records will be released in 2013, as will ACRONYM's debut recording of the complete Opus Musicum Sonatarum of Johann Christoph Pezel. Kivie's first solo CD, the complete cello suites of J.S. Bach, is also anticipated this year. Upcoming recordings in 2014 include the complete viol consort music of David Funck with Consort Conspiracy, a set of previously-unrecorded sonatas by Antonio Bertali with ACRONYM, and a disc of solo cello and chamber music by Kaija Saariaho with members of ICE.

As a chamber musician, Kivie has performed in Carnegie Hall's Weill Recital Hall and Zankel Hall, Lincoln Center's Alice Tully Hall and Rose Theatre, and other major venues on three continents, as well as live on WNYC 93.9 in New York and WFMT 98.7 in Chicago. He has been a faculty member at the Cortona Sessions for New Music in Cortona, Italy, since 2012. Kivie plays a 2003 William Whedbee cello, and additionally performs on electric cello, Baroque and piccolo cellos, viols, viola d'amore, and lirone.


GABRIELA LENA FRANK, COMPOSITION

Of mixed Peruvian/Chinese/Lithuanian-Jewish ancestry, Guggenheim fellow and Grammy-winning composer/pianist Gabriela Lena Frank explores her heritage through her musical compositions which have been described as “crafted with unselfconscious mastery” (Washington Post). She travels frequently in South America, incorporating folklore and native musical styles into a western classical framework.

Frank is regularly commissioned by luminaries such as Yo Yo Ma, Dawn Upshaw, The King's Singers, and the Kronos Quartet, as well as premiere symphonies. She is composing a work for the 2015 Bicentenniel of the Haydn/Handel Society at the Library of Congress; and an opera with Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Nilo Cruz.

Frank is the subject of two PBS documentaries: “Peregrinos/Pilgrims: A Musical Journey,” documenting her work drawing on interviews with Hispanic immigrants; and “Compadre Huashayo,” documenting her work in Ecuador with the Orquestra de Instrumentos Andinos, comprised entirely of native highland instruments. Frank’s life and music is featured in multiple scholarly books including the W.W. Norton Anthology, The Musics of Latin America.

MARY FUKUSHIMA, FLUTE

A flutist for the Twenty-First Century, Mary Fukushima has established herself as a leading performer of contemporary music. Her 2006 Carnegie Hall Debut was praised as a “powerhouse performance” by critics from the New York Concert Review, and has led her to share her passion for contemporary music around the world. Her devotion to expanding the flute repertoire has resulted in over fifty world-premiere performances. Mary has performed with several world-class contemporary ensembles such as the Manhattan Sinfonietta as well as the Gotham City Orchestra for the New York Premiere of Steve Reich’s ‘You Are Variations’ in Alice Tully Hall. In 2008, Mary and her duo partner Michael Kirkendoll formed the DuoSolo Foundation, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to the creation, performance, and education of new music. In 2010, the foundation presented the first annual Cortona Sessions for New Music in Cortona, Italy, bringing performers and composers together for two weeks of performance, study, and collaboration. The DuoSolo Foundation also sponsors an annual Emerging Composer Competition which has received over 100 new works for flute and piano since 2009.

Mary is has held teaching positions at Pittsburg State University (KS) and at the University of Kansas, in addition to maintaining a large private flute studio. She holds degrees from the University of Kansas (DMA), Manhattan School of Music (MM), and Long Island University (BFA), where her primary teachers were David Fedele, Linda Chesis, and Bradley Garner. In addition to her musical endeavors, Mary is a dedicated yogi, teaching and practicing in Stillwater, OK. If not in the practice room or yoga studio, you will likely find Mary trail running with her dog, Mr. Sam, or ‘hanging out’ on the wall at the climbing gym.


AMIR KHOSROWPOUR, PIANO

The Performer. Praised by The Los Angeles Times as having “irresistible verve, unpretentious directness, and fingers of steel,” pianist and composer Amir Khosrowpour “seeks out what is new and vital and delivers it with passion, considerable drama, and poetry” (NY Concert Review). He has performed across the United States, in China and Italy, and in a month-long exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. This Fall, Khosrowpour returned to Torino for a collaboration with filmmaker Simone Catania at Noire Gallery, as well as concerts at Maison Musique and Circolo dei lettori. In 2009 his piano duo, Corky Has a Band, presented a concert based on the popular (and fun) drinking game, PowerHour. This season they continue their monthly concert series, The Playground, focusing on improvisation, guest artist showcases, audience participation, and general silliness. September’s Playground featured a book burning, while October saw the release of their educational music video, the ABZs.The composer. Khosrowpour is a company composer for The Actors Company Theatre. He is working with playwrights Andrea Thome, Jonathan Goldberg, and Edith Freni (one project is a zombie musical), and has collaborated with NYC dance companies including Kathryn Wilkening, C. Eule Dance, and Nicoll+Oreck. His music accompanied Nicoll+Oreck to Scandinavia for performances this November.The Instructor. Khosrowpour has developed programs for students in an advanced video-conferencing program, called Distance-Learning, at Manhattan School of Music. He has presented to students in New York State, Indiana, Florida, and even Norway, and has given professional development to teachers in Pennsylvania. He has served as faculty at the Perry-Mansfield Performing Arts Camp in Colorado, Camp MSM (Manhattan School of Music), and The Cortona Sessions for New Music in Italy.The Student. Khosrowpour graduated with Distinction from the University of Kansas, earning a B.M. in Piano and Composition. Having completed the Masters of Music at Manhattan School of Music, he is now working on his Doctorate. He is most thankful for his mentors, Scott McBride Smith, Jack Winerock, and Phillip Kawin.The Swell Guy. He lives in The Bronx with his Steinway (won in a 2002 competition) and his fat black cat (found in a BX park in 2007). Still practicing, still writing, still thinking up crazy stuff.


MICHAEL KIRKENDOLL, PIANO

Bridging the gaps between old and new, Michael Kirkendoll is a not your everyday pianist. Equally at home in the worlds of Beethoven and Haydn as in those of Frederic Rzewski and John

Cage. Michael’s appearances as a finalist in the American Pianists Association Classical Fellowship Awards were lauded as “inspired” showcasing “extraordinary” technical gifts and “superior intelligence.” His performance of John Corigliano’s Piano Concerto with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra “dazzled from the moment he sat down at the keyboard.” Michael is a dedicated advocate for the music of the 20th and 21st centuries. Since 2006, he has

premiered over a fifty new works as either soloist or collaborator. His talents for this music extend far beyond the typical pianistic arsenal of octaves and arpeggios. Michael possesses a deep and powerful voice and a lack of inhibition allowing him to perform with great skill some of the 20th-21st century’s most avant-garde works for theatrical pianist, including Frederic Rzewski’s De Profundis and Jerome Kitzke’s Sunflower Sutra. Michael’s work with Frederic Rzewski led to the 2007 premiere of the Nanosonatas, Book 1. Michael is currently Assistant Professor or Piano at Oklahoma State University. He has earned degrees from the University of Kansas (DMA, BM) and the Manhattan School of Music (MM). Michael is founder and artistic director of the Cortona Sessions for New Music, in Cortona, Italy, and president of the DuoSolo Foundation. When not at the piano, Michael can be found enjoying fine wine, cooking, golfing, and enjoying time with his wife and duo partner, Mary Fukushima. Michael is also the author of the food and wine blog, The Uncorked Pianist.


JEFFREY LOEFFERT, SAXOPHONE

Dr. Jeffrey Loeffert is the Assistant Professor of Theory and Saxophone at Oklahoma State University. As a founding member of the h2 quartet, Loeffert has won numerous chamber music prizes including First Place – Gold Medal at the Fischoff National

Chamber Music Competition and First Place at the North American Saxophone Alliance Quartet Competition. The h2 quartet is featured on four commercially available discs and recently received an Aaron Copland grant for their newest disc, Times & Spaces.

An advocate of new music, Loeffert has premiered works by Jongyun Choi, Benjamin Fuhrman, Takuma Itoh, David MacDonald, John Mackey, Victor Marquez-Barrios, Roger W. Petersen, Jesse Ronneau, Matthew Schoendorff, and Amy Williams, among others. He has performed in such prestigious venues as the

ASEAN Nat Hall in Bangkok, Thailand, the Avalon Theatre in Easton, Maryland, the Canker Dom in Ljubljana, Slovenia, Clowes Hall in Indianapolis, Indiana, the Times Center in New York City, and the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, California.

Loeffert graduated Summa Cum Laude from Northwestern University. A Frank Huntington Beebe Scholar, Loeffert studied in Paris at the Conservatoire National de Région - Cergy-Pontoise where he received the Medalle d'Or Unanimité and the Conservatoire National de Région - Boulogne-Billancourt where he received the diploma Cycle d'Orientation Professionnel. Loeffert completed graduate studies at Michigan State University as the recipient of a University Distinguished Fellowship. He received a Master of Music degree in Saxophone Performance and a Master of Music degree in Music Theory Pedagogy.

GREGORY OAKES, CLARINET

Gregory Oakes is one of the most exciting and energetic clarinetists of his generation. From his Carnegie Hall debut with members of Ensemble Intercontemporain and Pierre Boulez to his performances as a member of the Colorado Symphony Orchestra, Dr. Oakes has been praised by critics for his “outstanding performance” (New York Times) and “jazzy flourishes” (Denver Post). He has appeared as a concerto soloist with such esteemed ensembles as the Colorado Symphony Orchestra and the Denver Brass, performed with Grammy® Award-winner Terence Blanchard at the Telluride Jazz Festival, played at Amsterdam’s venerable new music hall, De IJsbreker, and been a featured soloist at the prestigious MaerzMusik festival in Berlin. He has been featured as a soloist at multiple International Clarinet Association ClarinetFests, the University of Oklahoma Clarinet Symposium, the International Computer Music Conference, Amsterdam’s Gaudeamus International Interpreters’ Competition, the Karnatic Lab concert series (Amsterdam), the Crested Butte Chamber Music Festival, Boulder’s Modern Music Festival (M2F), and Colorado Music Festival’s Young Artist Series. Dr. Oakes has also toured Brazil, Thailand, and the Netherlands and been in residence at Princeton University, Harvard University, Dartmouth College, and the Aspen Music Festival. In the summer, he is on the faculty of The Cortona Sessions festival for new music in Tuscany, Italy.

Dr. Oakes’ recordings have been released on Bridge, CRI, Gothic, Karnatic Lab Records, and Naxos and broadcast on National Public Radio. His solo CD New Dialects appears on the Centaur Records label. Dr. Oakes is on the faculty of Iowa State University and is principal clarinet of the Des Moines Symphony Orchestra. He is a Buffet Group USA and Vandoren Performing Artist.


FORREST PIERCE, COMPOSITION

Forrest Pierce composes music steeped in religious mysticism and contemporary virtuosity. Sincere, often triadic, and blatantly tuneful, it draws on both non-western and rock-era traditions to depict an authentic world of sacred unity and natural beauty. His

works have been performed in sacred and concert settings around the world, on noteworthy concert series and by diverse ensembles such as Brave New Works, the Chamber Players of the Society of New Music/ISCM, the BMOP chamber series, DuoSolo, the Chamber Orchestras of Portland and Kansas City, the Indianapolis and Walla Walla Symphonies, the Concord Ensemble, Octarium, the Seattle New Music Ensemble, the Oregon and Northwest Repertory Singers, the Boston Choral Ensemble, the Dublin and Canadian International Organ

Competitions, Songfest, and by numerous distinguished soloists in North America and abroad. His catalog is led by over 50 works for voices, including operatic, choral, and solo vocal forces. He has been the winner of the 2012 Barlow Prize in Composition, was first prize recipient of the Boston Choral Ensemble and Boston Chamber Singers choral competitions, and was composer-in-residence of the beautiful—if short-lived—International Meeting of Choral Music at the University of São Paulo—Riberão Preto, Brazil.

In recent years, Pierce’s textural conception has become primarily heterophonic, largely derived from Rock root-position progression and florid Qawwali music. A student of both North Indian Classical Voice and Milonguero-style Argentine Tango, his rhythmic language has become an alternation and collision between freely improvisatory meditative landscapes and consistently pulsed motoric dance rhythms. Pierce is a member of the exceptionally convivial faculty of the Cortona Sessions for New Music, in Cortona, Tuscany.


2013 Cortona Sessions Guest Artist Bios

artists-in-residenceLaura Bohn, soprano | Soprano Laura Bohn is making her mark as a compelling presence in the new generation of operatic performers, lauded as “..an amazing blend of vocal splendor and physical virtuosity” (San Francisco Chronicle). In 2013 the American soprano will return to the stage as Nerone in MonteverdISH, a breakdance inspired adaptation of Monteverdi’s “L’incoronazione di Poppea” which toured major theaters throughout northern Europe last season, including Amsterdam’s Stadsschouwburg and Berlin’s Konzerthaus. The soprano’s 2013-14 season includes the Governess in Britten’s The Turn of the Screw at West Edge Opera in San Francisco, a reprise as Nerone in MonteverdISH throughout the Netherlands, Holodomor, a new opera by Virko Baley about Stalin’s Ukrainian famine in Las Vegas and New York, and DJ Mozart, an original hiphop-dance opera based on the life and works of Mozart which will tour major theaters in northern Europe. The 2012 season saw her return to West Edge Opera as Bessie in Mahagonny Songspiel, performances at the Holland Festival and a national tour as soloist with the Ricciotti Ensemble Orchestra throughout the Netherlands. Ms. Bohn has been a young artist at the Royal Opera of Spain (Teatro Real) in Madrid, Syracuse Opera in New York and the International Vocal Arts Institute in Tel Aviv. A finalist in the 2009 Lotte Lenya Competition, other roles include Micaela in La Tragedie de Carmen, Pamina in Die Zauberflöte, Fiordiligi in Cosi Fan Tutte, Musetta in La Boheme and Rosalinda in Die Fledermaus. She is a graduate of the Dell ‘Arte International School of Physical Theater and the Manhattan School of Music.

Geoffrey Deibel, saxophone | A Washington, D.C. native, Geoffrey Deibel is emerging as an important voice for the saxophone and contemporary music. He has appeared at major international festivals (Darmstadt, International Iannis Xenakis Festival), and has been an invited lecturer at Die Staatliche Hochschule für Musik, Stuttgart, and University College Cork, Ireland. Recent concert highlights have included performances at Merkin Hall and Zankel Hall (NYC). Geoff has commissioned new works by Jesse Ronneau, Claudio Gabriele, Drew Baker, David Rakowski, and Nathan Davis, and premiered works by Hans Thomalla, Marc Mellits, Amy Williams, Jason Eckardt, Hiroyuki Itoh, and Mari Takano, among others. He has also worked with other composers such as John Adams, Bernard Rands, and Howard Sandroff. Geoff is a member of the critically acclaimed h2 quartet, winners of the Fischoff Competition and an Aaron Copland Fund Recording Grant. Geoff is also a seasoned orchestral performer, and serves as principal saxophonist with the Wichita Symphony. He as also appeared with the New World Symphony (Miami) and Grant Park Symphony, and has worked with composers David Robertson and Roberto Abbado. Geoff holds degrees in history and music from Northwestern University, and a doctoral degree from Michigan State University. His principal teachers have included Joseph Lulloff, Frederick Hemke, Leo Saguiguit, and Reginald Jackson. Geoff currently serves as Assistant Professor of Saxophone and Director of Jazz Studies at Wichita State University. He is a Selmer and Rico Performing Artist.

Kimberly Goddard Loeffert, saxophone| A founding member of the h2 quartet, Kimberly Goddard Loeffert holds a BM in Saxophone Performance and Jazz Studies from Northwestern University. Loeffert


earned an MM and a DMA in Saxophone Performance, as well as an MM in Music Theory Pedagogy from Michigan State University. Her primary saxophone teachers have included Joe Lulloff, and Drs. Frederick L. Hemke and Joseph Wytko. Loeffert has had the opportunity to play with a number of orchestras and ensembles including the Brevard Music Center Orchestra (NC), the Evanston Symphony Orchestra (IL), the Flint Symphony Orchestra (MI), the Grand Ensemble de Boulogne-Billancourt (France), and the Waukegan Symphony Orchestra (IL). An advocate for new music, Loeffert has premiered new works by Jongyun Choi, Benjamin Fuhrman, Claudio Gabriele, Aaron Holloway-Nahum, Takuma Itoh, Michael Kuehn, David MacDonald, Victor Marquez-Barrios, Steve Martin, Roger W. Petersen, Matthew Schoendorff, and Chris Teichler, among others. Loeffert serves on the faculty of the Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp during her summers. She has taught saxophone, chamber music, and music theory at Michigan State University and music theory and aural skills at Florida State University where she is completing a PhD in Music Theory. Loeffert will join the faculty of Oklahoma State University this fall 2013.

Jake Wallace, conductor | An accomplished conductor, educator, and writer, Jacob Wallace is an emergent personality in the performance of contemporary instrumental music. His efforts to present innovative and approachable programming of new works have brought modern trends to atypical places, with performances being lauded by audiences and professionals alike. Dr. Wallace is currently on the faculty of Southeastern Oklahoma State University in Durant, Oklahoma, where he serves as Director of Instrumental Activities. Among his active efforts at Southeastern is the new music initiative projekt (n), which engages student musicians directly with composers in collaborations on new works for wind ensemble. His writings on music have been published in six volumes of GIA’s Teaching Music Through Performance in Band series and he has become known for a series of engaging program notes, commissioned directly from a number of composers, which have helped fresh audiences understand new works on their first listening. Dr. Wallace holds the degree Doctor of Musical Arts from The University of Georgia. He also has degrees from Baylor University and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. His principal conducting teachers have been John Lynch, Kevin Sedatole, and Carolyn Barber. In his free time, he enjoys food and beverage culture and writing twitter updates that always seem to be five characters too long.

Civitella Ranieri Foundation Fellows

Andrea Clearfield (b. 1960) is an award-winning composer of music for orchestra, chorus, chamber ensembles, dance, and multimedia collaborations. She has been praised by the New York Times for her “graceful tracery and lively, rhythmically vital writing”, the Philadelphia Inquirer for her “compositional wizardry” and “mastery with large choral and instrumental forces”, by the L.A. Times for her “fluid and glistening orchestration” and by Opera News for her music of “timeless beauty”. Her works are performed widely in the U.S. and abroad. Among her works are ten cantatas including one for The Philadelphia Orchestra. Her 2012 cantata, “Tse Go La” for double chorus, electronics and chamber orchestra incorporates Tibetan melodies that she was documenting in the restricted Himalayan region of Lo Monthang, Nepal. She is currently writing an opera. Dr. Clearfield has been awarded international fellowships from the American Composers Forum at the American Academy in Rome, the Rockefeller Foundation’s Bellagio Center and Civitella Ranieri in Italy and Fundaciòn Valparaiso in Spain. She was


awarded a 2012 Fellowship at Montalvo in California and 2013 residencies at Moulin à Nef in France and the Wurlitzer Foundation in Taos, NM. She was recently visiting composer at the University of Chicago, the College of William and Mary, the University of Texas at Austin and the St. Petersburg Conservatory in Russia. Other awards include fellowships at Yaddo, the MacDowell Colony, Ragdale and Virginia Center for the Creative Arts. She received a DMA from Temple University where she was honored as a distinguished alumna, an MM from the University of the Arts and a BA from Muhlenberg College where she received the Alumni Achievement in the Arts Award. She served on the composition faculty at The University of the Arts and is the pianist in the Relâche Ensemble. She is also the founder and host of the renowned Philadelphia Salon concert series now completing its 26th year featuring contemporary, classical, jazz, electronic, dance, and world music and winner of Philadelphia Magazine’s 2008 “Best of Philadelphia” award. Amelia Cuni's multi-faceted voice and Werner Durand's sensitive playing merge into a unique whole instantly capturing the listener's ear. They build on their long-lasting collaboration and in-depth research in Western and Eastern musical traditions to develop their various influences into a stunning presentation. Together they share the desire to explore borderlands in their music combining experience with experiment.

Amelia Cuni's singing draws from the rich heritage of dhrupad, the oldest form of North Indian music. She uses ragas and Indian vocal techniques in a distinct way, integrating her Italian roots and her diverse collaborations with internationally renowned musicians. Her voice is powerful and soothing, moving and hypnotic. Her singing has been praised in the national press of India, Europe and USA.

Werner Durand has created self-made wind instruments of various materials, played with different embouchures, circular breathing and digital delays. He has developed his own style and playing techniques which may evoke different traditions of world music. His minimalist approach interacts with Amelia's Indian musical language.

Larisa Vrhunc (b. March 2, 1967 in Ljubljana, Slovene nationality) studied music education (1985 - 1990) and composition (1989 - 1993 with Marijan Gabrijelčič) at the Academy of Music in Ljubljana and subsequently composition and orchestration at the Conservatory of Music in Geneva (1994 - 1996 with Jean Balissat) and privately (with Eric Gaudibert). Between 1995 and 1998 she was a research fellow and assistant at the Academy of Music in Ljubljana from where she received her postgraduate degree in composition. In 1999 she finished her composition studies at the National Superior Conservatory of Music in Lyon (with Gilbert Amy; certificates in orchestration and analysis of 20th century music) and received a 5 months grant at the Künstlerhaus Schloß Wiepersdorf. Since 2000 she has been working as assistant professor at the Faculty of Arts in Ljubljana, Department of Musicology (lecturing on music analysis and orchestration). In 2000 she did a 1 month training in computer music at Ircam, Paris. She has taken part in several composition courses (S. Gubaidulina, B. Ferneyhough, M. Jarrell, K. Huber, S. Xu, T. Jennefelt, B. Holten, U. Rojko, F. Nieder, H. Lachenmann, H. Kyburz, L. Francesconi, F. Romitelli, C. de Bondt, D. Bouliane, P. Dusapin).


Most of her works were performed (various venues in Slovenia, Switzerland, Italy, Austria, The Netherlands, Germany, The Czech Republic, Poland, France, Finland, USA, Canada, Japan; some commissions from important festivals such as Grame Lyon or Musik Biennale Berlin). She was awarded the Slovene National Prešeren Prize for students, Slovene Composers' Society Award, Prix Fondation Royaumont at the 1st European Composers Contest "Chœurs & Maîtrises de Cathédrales" (Amiens - France), Prix du Conseil d' Etat (Geneva - Switzerland), one of three equal prizes at the European Women Composers Contest (Nijmegen - The Netherlands) and 1st Prize at the 2nd European Composers Contest "Chœurs & Maîtrises de Cathédrales" (Amiens - France). She is also one of the eight winners of the 13th International Composition Seminar Boswil and scholarship-holder from the NEM Canada.

Mansoor Hosseini has studied composition in Paris with Phillipe Capdenat and Yoshihisa Taïra. Later he joined the theory and computer-music classes of Peter Swinnen at the Royal Music Conservatory of Brussels as well as composition classes of Carl-Axel Hall at the Gothenburg Music Conservatory.

Hosseini’s creations within theatrical music are inspired from martial arts, contemporary dance and theater. His research and studies with composers such as Georges Aperghis inspired him to follow this composing style.

Hosseini currently works with avant-garde music, dance and theater groups and composes contemporary music for various ensembles around Europe and America. 2003, he founded Gothenburg Music & Dance Company (GMDC) with the purpose of combining musicians and actors or even musicians becoming actors, leading to musical theater or, as he prefers to call it, theatrical music.

2012 Cortona Sessions Participant BiosKelley Barnett, a flutist from Montana, is currently attending the Lynn Conservatory of Music working toward a Master of Music Degree. She received her bachelor degree from Lynn under the tutelage of Renee Siebert. A versatile flutist, Ms Barnett has dabbled in many genres of classical music. She participates in the New Music Ensemble, woodwind quintet, wind ensemble and the Lynn Philharmonia at the Lynn Conservatory. Ms Barnett has performed Italy, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, as well as various states in the United States including Montana, Florida, New York, and the Hawaiian Islands. She won the 2008 Montana State University Concerto Competition and has twice performed as soloist with the Montana State Symphony. She served as flutist with the Bozeman Symphony Orchestra. Along with Ms. Siebert, Kelley has studied under David DiGiaccobi and Shuichi Komiyama and has participated in the master classes of Jason Blank, and Rhonda Larson. Ms Barnett will continue her Master’s studies under the instruction of Mr. Jeffrey Khaner as well as continue in her dedication to keeping the musical integrity of every genre of classical music.

Born in southern Oregon, Adam Borecki seeks to compose music that balances cerebral, theoretical processes with intuitive musicality. His background in electronic dance music influences his energetic style. In 2012, Adam graduated from Chapman University with top honors, studying music composition and guitar performance. He currently divides his time between composing, audio recording, performing and traveling while applying to masters programs in music composition. As a classical guitarist, he regularly performs at private events and receptions around Orange County.

Brendan Faegre is an internationally performed composer, percussionist, bandleader, and educator. Built on the premise that the highest caliber musical works from all traditions have more similarities than differences, he combines the resonant elements of numerous musical traditions into a compelling and unique voice. Faegre’s music has been programmed around the world at festivals such as the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival (UK), Gaudeamus Muziekweek (NL), Beijing Modern Music Festival (CN), A Tempo – Festival Internazionale di Musica (IT), Ung Nordisk Musik (DK), Vinterlydfestivalen (NO), Aspen Music Festival (US), and Gamper Festival of Contemporary Music (US). His work has been recognized through honors and awards including the Northridge Composition Prize for Orchestra, Beijing Modern Music Festival Young Composer Award, acceptance in the European Composers’ Professional Development Programme, and a BMI Student Composer Award. He has also been a fellow of the American-Scandinavian Foundation, the Aspen Music Festival, and the Bowdoin International Music Festival. He has received commissions from Third Angle Ensemble, Slagwerk den Haag, percussionist Jia Jia Qiao, and baroque violinist Lucia Giraudo. Faegre has studied composition with Peter Adriaansz, Martijn Padding, Cornelis de Bondt, Lasse Thoresen, Don Freund, Claude Baker, Michael Gandolfi, Gregory Youtz, and Rob Hutchinson. He currently lives in The Hague, Netherlands.

Patrick Gutman is an accomplished and talented pianist and composer. He holds degrees in both Piano Performance and Music Composition from Chapman University’s Conservatory of Music. As a composer, Patrick has always had a deep interest in expressing himself and his ideas through his music. At times his music is introspective, calling upon the listener to become actively engaged in a more personal musical experience. At other times, his music is full of expressive lyricism with a rich harmonic language and a wide range of colors. His fascination with nature, science and philosophy are also often integrated into his compositions, expressing the thoughts and ideas that dwell in the realm of thought, and translate them through the dimension of sound. His music often creates vivid imageries and musical landscapes while evoking an emotional response to create a stimulated listening experience. Patrick graduated with Summa Cum Laude from Chapman University’s Conservatory of Music, and is currently obtaining his Master’s degree in Music Composition from California State University Northridge.

My name is Devinder Kumar (yes, I'm writing this myself) and I am incredibly excited and honored to be studying in the Cortona Sessions. Italy! Yet another reason I'm so happy to be here! I would like to thank my teachers at the Conservatory of Music at SUNY Purchase, along with my friends and family. I have studied for three years under an exceptional group of active composers, and all the opportunities in my future will be because of them - and because of my mother. I would like to dedicate any work done here, or anywhere, to her memory. Thank you.

Kyle Malone, age 20, lives in Louisville, Kentucky and is currently studying music performance at Morehead State University in Morehead, Kentucky under the instruction of Dr. Masahito Sugihara. While attending the university he also studied for a year under Johnny Salinas, and he also studied under Dr. Nathan Nabb before attending the university. Kyle seeks to become a renowned professor of saxophone at a university after he completes his degrees, and as such, is striving to attain as much merit as he can. He is the principal saxophonist in the Symphony Band at MSU. He performs regularly on soprano sax with his quartet, the Ambrym Saxophone Quartet, and has competed in many competitions with his group such as MTNA, J.C. Ariaga, and several local competitions. As a solo performer, Kyle has competed at MTNA, ISSAC, and his university's concerto competition. Kyle continues to become familiar with as much repertoire as he can and has started to collaborate in mixed ensembles with other instruments such as flute and guitar.

Lisa Neher is a mezzo-soprano and composer based in Iowa City, IA. She graduated summa cum laude from Lewis & Clark College with degrees in vocal performance, music composition, and theatre, and holds a master's degree in composition from the University of Kansas. Lisa is currently pursuing a DMA in vocal performance at the University of Iowa. A vocal student of Katherine Eblerle, Juila Broxholm, and Susan McBerry, Lisa is a committed performer of both operatic and song repertoire, and has a particular interest in contemporary music. Her recent roles include Cherubino in Le Nozze di Figaro, Annio in La clemenza di Tito, and the Student in the premiere of The Nightingale and the Rose, a chamber opera by composer Jeremiah Li. Lisa writes lyrical, heartfelt music that is infused with drama and that speaks to audiences on an emotional and instinctual level. Her works include solo and chamber music for instrumentalists as well as vocal works in the operatic, song, and choral genres, which represent her deepest passion. Her composition teachers include Michael Johansen and Forrest Pierce. Lisa hails from Washington State, where she returns every summer to hike in the meadows on Mount Rainier.

K. Lynn Pierce is a composer and performer currently located in Miami. She is pursuing graduate studies in music composition at the University of Miami under Dennis Kam. Lynn's past work has centered heavily upon acapella choral music and she has also written for chamber ensembles as well as orchestral work. Her passion for music that is intelligent, accessible, and programmable for youth ensembles has driven her toward writing that is typically tonal, idiomatic for the instruments or voices involved, yet structurally sound. Some of her current projects explore the contrast between equal temperament and variations upon just intonation, whether this should influence our theoretical approaches to music, and how to harness these differences and use them gracefully and artistically. Over the past several years Lynn has been charting out her personal ideas of artistic ethics as well as her aesthetic ideals to strive for in her work. The primary goal in her music is to utilize many traditional aspects, but to frame them in a new way suitable for the current artistic climate.

Theresa Silveyra began playing the piano when she was six years old, studying with Mrs. Judy Meyers in Centralia, WA for eight years before moving with her family to southern California. It was these beginning lessons that inspired her to pursue a career in music. In 2012, she completed her Bachelor of Music degree in Piano Performance at Chapman University, graduating magna cum laude with departmental honors and awards in the areas of new music and music history. It was during her time at Chapman that she became greatly enamored with art music of the 20th and 21st century, participating in the conservatory's new music ensemble and collaborating with the composition department in order to perform student works. Theresa is currently pursuing a Masters degree at Portland State University, with an emphasis on piano performance and pedagogy, under the instruction of Dr. Susan Chan and Dr. Julia.

Nick Virzi is a New York City based composer, currently studying at SUNY Purchase under composer/performer Du Yun, and recently composer/performer Huang Ruo. He has been featured on various composition websites, most notably Composers Circle, and his works have been performed throughout New York. In addition to composing contemporary concert music, Nick is involved regularly in collaboration across various artistic fields, such as dance, film, and visual art. Aside from composing, Nick is also an active guitarist and private teacher.

Dakota Stefan Wayne is an undergraduate at the SUNY Purchase Conservatory of Music, where he currently studies with composer Du Yun. Dakota draws influences from many different styles of music, including indie rock and folk. He is a long time double bassist, and is also a self-taught guitar player, which he is now pursuing through his rock band, River Eater. He is an active performer, and has played in locations such as the Troy Savings Bank Music Hall, Tanglewood’s Ozawa Hall, Kodak Hall at the Eastman School of Music, and venues including The Bitter End, and Union Hall.


Yiguo Yan was born on January 9,1989 in Chong Qing, China. She commenced studying piano at the age of eight. She began composing in 2004 when she also entered the Shang Hai Music Middle School, studying composition under Yue Miao. In 2005 her first Chinese instrument ensemble "Dusk of hometonw" won both the honorable prize and the "Audience's favorite" prize at "The Shang Hai Music Festival Composition Competition of Young Composers." In 2006 Miss Yan's first western instrument chamber composition, "Life is the Slave of Fate"(for soprano, flute, piano and cello) won first prize at the "Shang Hai Chamber Composition Competition," performed at "He Luting" Hall of the Shanghai Conservatory. The dean of the Shang Hai Music Middle School,Dr. Zhao Xiaosheng, both rehearsed the group and played piano. In 2007 Miss Yan attended the Shang Hai Conservatory with Professor Lv Huang, and her second Chinese instrument Chamber piece "Heaven and Hell on the Top of the Grass" won third prize at the "Shang Hai Conservatory 80 Years Anual--"Xiang Yin" Chinese instrument composition Competition." In 2008, Miss Yan enrolled in The Mannes Colleage of Music as the sole composition student of that year, and also won the highest scholarship of the Composition department, while studying with Professor David Loeb. A year later her first Chamber opera "Mirror" (for soprano, Peking Tenor, flute, clarinet, oboe, piano and percussion) won first prize at the Nancy Van de Vate International Composition Prize for Opera. "Mirror" was published by the competition committee in Vienna. In 2010 Miss Yan commenced studying with composer Mario Davidovsky. In2011, Miss Yan attend one of the most famous Music Festival “Fontainebleau Festival” in France. And as first experience of outdoor performing music directing, she won the “Art Music Prize of Fontainebleau” with her colleague Igor Santos. In 2012, Miss Yan enrolled by Brandeis University for master degree of composition, studying with Yu-Hui Chang currently.

Chun-Ju Yen hails from Taichung, Taiwan. She began studying music at the age of seven when she started playing piano. She received her Bachelor’s of Music in Piano Performance from Christ College Taipei, Taiwan. At Christ College she studied with Chi-Wei Liu. During her undergraduate Chun-Ju began to have an interest in composition and began to study composition with Ya-Min Hsu at Christ College. Chun-Ju first premiered a composition on a solo recital in Taipei, Taiwan on October 28, 2005. Her compositions were very well received by the spectators who jam packed the concert hall. This premier concert further encouraged her to keep pursuing her artistic ability. She also had studied composition with Jere Hutcheson. In addition, she participated the festival, Siena Summer Festival in Italy 2009 and 2012. She had Master class with Raphael Fusco and Rui Penha. During the summer, She had pieces premiered and concert tour in Siena, San Gimignano and Montalcino. Currently Chun-Ju is studying with Chien-Wen Cheng and actively participating in various occasions to showcase her new compositions.

Mary Young has been playing the flute for 11 years. She attended the junior Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, England during high school. Mary also participated in the London Schools Symphony Orchestra led by Peter Ash. After finishing high school, Mary received a BM in flute performance from Chapman University's Conservatory of Music, which she attended on a Chancellor's Scholarship.
