2013 Annual ReportExecutive Director Report
I would like to begin with a reminder to you thatGMHA is a 501(c)(3) and that it was founded in1926 by a group of horse enthusiasts who werevisionary in recognizing that, if they did not worktogether to preserve and grow their community andtheir sport, no one would. This vision was revisitedin May when the board collaborated in two strategicplanning sessions and came away with a unanimousmessage: the future of GMHA is “Better not Big-ger”. The mission statement was simplified andupdated to read: “GMHA is dedicated to provid-ing and maintaining opportunities for educationaland competitive activities for diverse equestriandisciplines; emphasis is placed on equestrian trailspreservation, horsemanship and youth education”.
I know from feedback I get that some of you feelthat GMHA has lost sight of its’ original purpose, but I can tell you that it has not. Every penny weraise over and above the operating costs (such asinsurance, onsite EMT’s, and property taxes!) goestowards maintenance of the site, and trails, so thatthey continue to exist for future generations.
Nowhere is this commitment to our mission moreevident than in the GMHA easement program. This year alone Cyndy Kozara has worked to secure14 new trails bringing the total of trails protected byeasement to 23. As a ‘Horse Association’ we cannoteasily legally secure multi-use trail easements but we

have encouraged compatible user groups, such as snow-mobilers and hikers, to secure their own easements onthe ‘GMHA’ trails. And we are very proud that the ed-ucational aspect of our mission has benefited so manythroughout the year. Every event run at GMHA moti-vates and encourages equestrians to strive to be betterhorsemen and women. In addition, Wheel and RidgeRunners, Junior Horsemanship Clinic, USEA AdultCamp, CVDA Camp, USEA Young Riders Camp, PonyClub rallies, the new Festival of Eventing clinic, andthe Lucinda Green clinic provide targeted education todiverse groups. Attendance has been high in 2013, andthe feedback has been overwhelmingly positive regard-ing the quality of instruction, the camaraderie of ridingat GMHA, and the general enjoyment of coming to theWoodstock area.
The 2013 pre-season buildup was somewhat nerve-wracking. GMHA staff and board had to adapt to thea new Executive Director; Marty Hunt retired after 4years of committed service to GMHA, including guid-ing the rebuilding of the facilities following TropicalStorm Irene and numerous other improvements. Martywas a hard act to follow. Secondly, GMHA was com-mitted to the installation of the new geotextile-sandfooting in all the arenas, a process which was initiallyhampered by the snow which hung around muchlonger than was convenient! The first show of the year, the CVDA Critique Day and Dressage Schooling Show

Scholarship FundsA total of $8,250 was generated from donors for the purpose of
the New England area, to participate in the Junior HorsemanshipClinic. Because of this scholarship money, these students fromacross New England were able to attend the Junior HorsemanshipClinic with their horses. We hope that future grants and dona-tions will allow us to continue supporting young riders.
Eileene Wilmot AwardEileene Wilmot and her husband Peyton purchased Birch Hill Farmin 1950 and lived there for nearly 40 years. Eileene was a lifelongsupporter of the sport of eventing and strongly advocated forsupporting young people. In her memory, Birch Hill Farm gen-erously sponsor an award which goes to the three top-placingriders competing in the Junior Preliminary division of the GMHAFestival of Eventing August Horse Trials. This year Katie Lichten
second, and $500 went to third place rider Caroline Martin.

had to be postponed and we were grateful to CVDA fortheir understanding and continued support.
Arena-based events kicked off in mid-May with theDriving Combined Test, and from there we neverlooked back. In every weather condition imaginable(sleet, wind, heavy rain, and baking sun) drivers andriders in all disciplines were unanimous in their praiseof the new arena footing. Feedback from competitors, trainers and spectators was universally positive and sup-port poured in resulting in donations totaling $127,000of the $149,000 cost of the Footing Upgrade Project.Part of this was raised through events such as the spec-tacular lobster-and-champagne Homecoming Party runby Ruth Poulson in Florida, and the elegant BarbecueLawn Party at the beautiful home of Jennifer and TomEddy in Massachusetts. The ability to have fun whileworking for a cause exemplifies the GMHA spirit. Asecond, and final, phase of the Cross Country Upgraderan simultaneously with the Footing Upgrade, withour enthusiastic event supporters investing a further$26,000 in course improvements. Beginner Novicethrough Intermediate, GMHA is without doubt the go-to venue for eventers in the North East, as evidenced bythe waitlist for every event.
Donations to the Annual fund were, however, signifi-cantly lower in 2013 as people gave to specific cam-paigns such as the Footing and Cross Country Upgradeprojects. In 2104, it is intended that the Annual Fundbe the only GMHA fundraising campaign. For thosewith a long-term vision, Planned Giving is an oppor-tunity for supporters to pledge a part of their estate toGMHA by joining the Silver Stirrup Legacy Society. This year another nine people joined this special groupbringing membership to 23. By doing so, they endorsewhat GMHA stands for, and commit to the preserva-tion of this special, precious place.
Individual membership numbers increased in 2013,and business memberships were up for a third year in arow. This, coupled with excellent event entries and gen-erous donations (and no natural disasters), meant thatwe were able to fund additional capital projects suchas repainting the GMHA office building, and reroof-ing part of the historic Upwey barn. Additionally, wewere able to continue to support the community. TheGMHA grounds were made available, and staff assisted

with fundraisers held by CVDA, Ride for the Cure, andHigh Horses Therapeutic Riding Center. Young ridersreceived over $14,000 in grants and awards to partici-pate in equestrian activities. Going forward, we will belooking to place emphasis on making GMHA accessibleto even more people by building partnerships in thecommunity.
In some ways, my first season at GMHA has been verymuch what I expected: challenging, exhausting, excit-ing and rewarding. In other ways, it has exceeded myexpectations. The staff are outstanding in their workethic, expertise and commitment. The passion and gen-erosity of those associated with GMHA is overwhelm-ing and the welcome and support I have received fromeveryone is humbling. I am looking forward to 2014when GMHA will be even “Better, not Bigger”!

Deepest gratitude goes out to all of our Trail Donors…Thank youfor your land legacy!
We are happy to report that trail maintenance needs in 2013 havebeen minimal! After an initial bout of saturated soils causingsome downed trees in early summer and a few more this fall, thetrails have held up beautifully. And more good news for MembersLoop #5, a section of which has been closed off to riders for thelast three years. After negotiating with the landowner throughcurrent real estate agency, LandVest, we now have written per-mission to resume equestrian riding through the former “Lady inthe Swing” trail. A contractor has been hired to clear many fallentrees and brush hog. The trail will be reopened for 2014 andMembers Loop #5 will once again be the long, lovely ride it alwayswas. We plan to publish a NEW Members Loop Map on Tyvecpaper for 2014!
