Report from the Executive Director and Board BIAWW’s Board of Directors and Executive Director have had another busy year. We have continued to have a positive response from our sponsorship program and we are pleased to welcome many new supporters.

Our big news this past year has been the recent move of our day program and our glass program to a bigger, and brighter space on Westheights Drive. Allowing all the services in partnership with Traverse Independence be delivered under one roof!

Our Care to Share program, the support group for caregivers started up again in September, with the continued long term funding from the LHIN. It continues to be well attended both in Waterloo Region and Wellington County.

Advocacy is a significant part of the mandate of the BIAWW and our educational program, Lidz on Kidz, has been active in supporting the goals in school, community programs and minor sport leagues within our region. This past year we were able to get our message out to over 10,000 youth.

Drawing on the expertise of our member and volunteers, we were able to produce numerous glass pieces that were available throughout the community at various venues and run a fundraising venture that continues to be our biggest source of awareness.

A large crowd gathered at Brilliance in Music in November to hear the Opportunities and Errol Blackwood. To start the golf season off right, we hosted our annual indoor virtual golf tournament at Golf Without Limits. On June 2 we hosted our first annual Heels & Wheels 5K Run, 1K Walk/Roll to kick off National Brain Injury Awareness month. It was developed to promote brain injury awareness and raise funds for the programs of the BIAWW. To end this year, we golfed at Tralee in September in our annual tournament honouring the memory of our friend Dana King and hosted the Hawaiian Mix & Mingle a unique networking event.

Our volunteer lunch in April was well attended and helped to showcase our agency and members. We all worked together to end the summer at the annual Kitchener Blues Festival.

Looking beyond the association, our Executive Director has continued to part of the ABI Steering Committee as part of a LHIN initiative to create new ABI services in Waterloo-Wellington including our Caregiver Support Group and ongoing ABI Training Series.

Our Governance committee has again helped to secure some new board members. Our office assistant has helped the Executive Director in updating our database, volunteer management, community outreach, special event planning and social media updating. We, the board and our Executive Director, have ensured that the mission, vision and values of the BIAWW were upheld in all aspects of our work this year. Looking forward to the next year, our interaction with survivors, the community and our Provincial Organization will continue.

The Day Program of the OC keeps me motivated and I have made a family here. It is one big happy family. Without this program I would be sitting at home and not progressing.

~Jean Williams

The BIAWW has made me the person I am today and brought me out of my shyness. I have made friends with peers who understand me and can relate to my ABI.

~Kelly Easton

The Day Program gives me a sense of normalcy and community, friendship, a purpose in life in a non-judgmental atmosphere

~Moe Fabick

On behalf of the Kingscourt Group (Waterloo MB Church & Shamrock co-op) I would like to thank the BIAWW and the Lidz on Kidz program for the helmets you provided to the children in this community. They were very excited to receive them and now will be safer on their bikes.

~Stefanie MacGregor

Waterloo MB Church

My husband has an acquired brain injury and I have been his full time caregiver for a long time. The “CARE TO SHARE’ support group offered by the Brain Injury Association of Waterloo-Wellington has proved to be an invaluable help for me. I have met many others, spouses and parents caring for their loved ones and it’s made me realize that I’m not alone. There are many others that understand what it’s like to be in this role

We have shared our stories, we have laughed and cried together and a few of us have become firm friends. The facilitators are certainly knowledgeable, insightful and empathetic.

~Karen Gee
