    2. Introduction

    2.1 Purpose of this booklet and contents

    This booklet is addressed to Low Secondary school teachers and trainers. It is developed as

    part of the EUfolio EU Classroom ePortfolios, a project funded by the European

    Commission. The booklet aims to introduce teachers and trainers to the EUfolio project

    and to provide a starting resource material regarding ePortfolios and recommendations for

    their in-classroom use. The booklet provides a theoretical background regarding

    eAssessment, ePortfolio and 21st century skills in order to share a common understanding.

    Then, examples of previous implementations in higher institutions, where more systematic

    research work has been conducted, will be presented and implementation issues and

    recommendations will be discussed. Furthermore, we will refer to the two main ePortfolio

    tools to be used in this project and examples of learning activities developed for ePortfolio

    use will be given for further guidance. Lastly, a suggested implementation path will be

    outlined as guidance for the in-classroom implementation of the ePortfolios for the EUfolio

    project.

    2.2 The EUfolio Project

    EUfolio - EU Classroom ePortfolios is a project funded by the European Commission under

    the framework of the Lifelong Learning Programme (KA1 - Implementation of the

    European strategic objectives in Education and Training). The aim of the project is to

    design and test innovative ePortfolio models which will inform and support the

    implementation of innovative learning environments using ICT across Europe. The project

    objectives are:

    1. To deliver a systemic analysis of the current policy approaches and developments

    on the use of ePortfolio in education, including assessment and evaluation of

    students, learning planning, and professional development of teachers.

    2. To design potentially scalable ePortfolio models for teaching, learning and

    assessment use.

    3. To carry out transnational implementation pilots in different contexts and

    approaches.

    4. To draw valuable real-world lessons for deepening the use of ICT (specifically the

    portfolio approach) in teaching, learning and assessment going forward.

    5. To highlight the evidence for the efficacy of ePortfolio teaching and learning

    approaches, as well as to promote strategies of effective practice, sustainable

    implementation and consistent management.
