Once Blue, Forever Blue…

FFA advisors, students and friends,

As we celebrate 80 years of the iconic official blue corduroy jacket, we also recognize the honor and pride that so many have felt while wearing the official FFA jacket. The values and traditions this organization was built upon so many years ago are as true today as they were in 1928.

In celebrating this year of the official jacket, we are also introducing the new FFA Carhartt® jacket. This jacket was specifically designed for FFA by Carhartt with the intent of being worn by our members when there is a need for a jacket that is a little more rugged and you still want to show your FFA spirit. We also encourage all of our advisors, parents and alumni members to consider adding this jacket to their wardrobe to show their support for FFA. Please refer to pages 1-4 for our story about the legendary official jacket and pages 5-6 for the story on the FFA Carhartt jacket. For a limited time, these two jackets will be offered at a special price of $119 and $129 when you buy them online as a set before Oct. 31.

This year’s FFA Week theme “Ignite” is also fitting as we continue to celebrate the “Year of the Farmer” with RAM®. The future of agriculture is strong and, as the population continues to grow, so does the need for a healthy and abundant food supply. By igniting interest in the need to grow our resources in the food, fiber and natural resources industry, FFA members can continue to educate others on the importance of agriculture. Whether you farm hundreds of acres or have created a patio garden, we know that there is a little farmer in all of us. That is why we have developed a “Made in America” line of merchandise to support the “Year of the Farmer,” which can be found online at FFA.org/shop.

In 1933, the FFA band from Fredericktown, Ohio, was slated to perform at the 6th National FFA Convention in Kansas City. The group’s advisor, J. H. Lintner, knew the dress shirt and trousers of the then-current official FFA uniform would not suffice in the nippy October weather. Lintner opted instead for a jacketed uniform that would unify, distinguish and evoke pride in the band members. He had no idea that this new uniform would soon become a unifying cornerstone of FFA tradition.

Today—80 years later—the National FFA Convention & Expo still fills a city with a “sea of blue jackets”—a message to all who see us that we stand together, leading and growing our future, bringing success and pride to our nation. While the emblem is indeed the stronghold of FFA, its tradition, its heartbeat, lives in the jacket.

Far beyond a requirement for Official Dress, your corduroy jacket is an article of your faith, honor, pride and tradition. Faith in the land that rests beneath our feet. In your fellow chapter members, advisors and the organization itself. Honor in all who have worn it and will wear it: your parents, your grandparents, your children and grandchildren. Pride in the knowledge that, from generation to generation, you represent FFA—as doctors, engineers, biologists and, yes, farmers. And tradition, in a symbol of our past and the hope we carry on our shoulders for the future, to create and preserve a sustainable tomorrow. All of this in an effort to strengthen our families, solidify our friendships, and protect our communities. We do it because we are forever blue. And by the sweat on our brow and the “sea of blue jackets,” we live on through each other. We take pride in the knowledge that our uniform is the icon of an American tradition, instilling immeasurable pride with responsibility.

As you walk onto the convention stage, accept your first proficiency pin, meet your neighboring chapters at state competition, play in the FFA band, or even watch as your child is sworn in as a new officer, remember, your jacket is showing. National blue, corn gold. Stand proud, strong, and sure of who you are and what you represent. Past, present, or future—once blue, forever blue.

RETURN POLICY: FFA will replace, exchange or give credit for any non-personalized item up to 90 days after the date of purchase. The official FFA jacket is a personalized item and cannot be returned or replaced. A new jacket must be ordered for jackets that are ordered too small, too large or lettered incorrectly by the advisor, student or parent.

OFFICIAL JACKET POLICY: FFA jackets are sold to and are for use by active constitutional FFA members only. If a jacket is given or sold to a non-member, the emblems and lettering must be removed.

OFFICIAL JACKET DESCRIPTION: The jacket is made of 100% domestic cotton “national blue” corduroy with a concealed zipper, slash welt pockets, adjustable brass buckle tab waist, inside pockets and double-needle stitching for durability. Matching Swiss embroidered emblems are on the front and back in “national blue” and “corn gold.”

DOMESTIC OR IMPORTED: We offer both domestic and imported jackets. All fabric is made of 100% U.S. cotton and is either assembled domestically at Universal Lettering Company or with our agent overseas. All jackets are inventoried and lettered at Universal Lettering Company and are pulled randomly from stock. If you require a domestically assembled jacket, you can select the “Domestic Jacket Required” box on the jacket order form for an additional $15 charge.

JACKET FIT: Carefully reading the instructions on how to order jackets is imperative. Due to the change of the jacket fit in the Fall of 2005, you WILL NOT be able to use old fit jackets to determine what size to order as the old jackets are not cut in the same way as the new ones. In general, if a student is of average weight and height, you will only need to measure their chest/bust and order the corresponding size.

JACKET SIZES: Male jackets (Item 100) are available in sizes 28-56. Female jackets (Item 103) are available in sizes 28-50.

ORDERING INSTRUCTIONS: FFA offers two standard jacket styles, Item 100, tailored for the average male (5´10˝), and Item 103, tailored for the average female (5´5˝). The charts on pages 79-80 are for standard jackets and provide the actual body measurements and physical jacket measurements by size for both males and females. If your student is of average weight and height, simply measure their chest/bust and order the corresponding size. If you have any doubt whether you are ordering the correct size, simply take a few more measurements and determine if the measurements are the same as the body measurements for that size (see charts on pages 79-80). If you find that they are not, check the actual jacket measurements to see if there will be enough room to account for the discrepancy or whether you should order a size larger for a more comfortable fit. FRONT RE-LETTERING: FFA offers the service of changing jacket lettering. Only the front of official jackets can be re-lettered. Re-lettering orders will be processed on a first-in, first-out basis. Some older jackets made of lighter material cannot be re-lettered and will be returned to you at no charge. To have a jacket re-lettered, please send the jacket along with the following information typed or written out on a sheet of paper:

• Name, street address (not a P.O. box) and valid telephone number.• Chapter name, ID number and advisor’s name.• What you want removed from the jacket.• What you want added to the jacket.• Your payment—check, money order or school purchase order number.*• Make checks or money orders payable to Universal Lettering.• $24 for regular four-week re-lettering.• $34 for RUSH two-week re-lettering.*Every re-letter must have payment to process.

DELIVERY: All jackets are processed on a “first-in, first-out” basis. Orders are expected to be delivered within 7 business days plus transit time. (Note: Deadline for receiving jacket orders needed for the 86th National FFA Convention & Expo is Sept. 16, 2013. Please plan accordingly. Official jackets needed in less than 10 business days will be charged expedited shipping and handling fees.)
