The cougar has been the official mascot of SIUE since 1967. A live cougar named Chimega actually lived on campus until 1985. Today, the spirit of the beloved mascot lives on through a 14-foot-tall bronze statue which graces the entrance to the Morris University Center.

The tradition of painting the rock began in the late sixties and has remained a campus tradition through the years. The five-ton rock that sits in the Stratton Quadrangle has been tarred and feathered, memorialized victims of 9-11 and declared countless birthday greetings.

Upperclass Living OptionsSophomores and above have two options for living on campus—Evergreen Hall and Cougar Village. Evergreen Hall features suite- and apartment-style living with the amenities of a residence hall. Living units are available in four different layouts and most contain private bedrooms. Cougar Village combines the advantages of living on campus with the freedom of apartment life, offering independent, traditional apartment living.

Sustainability and living green are important at SIUE. The University is continually looking for ways to ensure a healthy and sustainable campus life. Here are some examples of what green looks like at SIUE.

You can choose from more than 40 courses with a sustainability focus in fields as diverse as biology, engineering, business, anthropology and philosophy. You can minor in environmental science or pursue an undergraduate specialization in ecology, evolution and environment.

It’s easy to use reusable water containers and reduce the number of plastic water bottles used at SIUE. The campus community has easy access to water-bottle filling stations which are located in many campus buildings.

The Gardens at SIUE is a 35-acre public garden and living laboratory dedicated to supporting education and research. Environmental sustainability and stewardship are cornerstones of The Gardens’ vision, providing a unique opportunity to research and implement innovative green technologies.

The 380-acre SIUE Nature Preserve features a dedicated location for student and faculty research, lab projects and class assignments. The area—protected from construction—contributes to the University’s sustainability and energy plans.

All new campus construction is Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) certifiable. The new Student Success Center, for example, includes various green features.

� The extensive use of natural light in the building interior boosts concentration and overall comfort.

� Translucent walls made from recycled milk jugs surround the basement computer lab.

� Polished concrete flooring requires less maintenance and contributes to lower energy costs by retaining heat in the winter and remaining cool in the summer.

1. Green Roofs SIUE has more than 17,500 squarefeet of green roof space on campus roofs. Green Roofs promote seasonal climate control and reduce environmental contaminants through wastewater runoff.

2. Giving Back Opportunities to volunteer and give back to the community are plentiful at SIUE. Washington Monthly, a national news magazine, ranks SIUE among the Top 50 master’s granting colleges and universities in the nation for our contributions to the public good.

3. Bike Share The campus bike share program gives students, faculty and staff an easy way to explore the many nature and biking trails available on or adjacent to SIUE’s campus, while ultimately developing an increased reliance on non-carbon modes of transportation.

4. Living Green First-year students can choose to live on campus in a focused interest community among other students who want to explore living sustainably. Upper-class students can live in the Eco-House, a stand-alone house conveniently located next to The Gardens at SIUE. This living community supports sustainable living, conservation and community service.

Accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, SIUE awards degrees in 44 undergraduate and 69 graduate and professional programs in the arts and sciences, business, education, engineering and nursing. The Schools of Dental Medicine and Pharmacy award a professional degree in dental medicine (D.M.D.) and pharmacy (Pharm.D.). You may choose from 168 areas of study including 55 undergraduate minors.

With a student-to-faculty ratio of 17 to 1, you can get to know your professors and gather resources for career opportunities and references for graduate school.

Faculty members incorporate research into classroom learning. 2. Communication Disorders Speech-language pathology students have the opportunity to work with faculty in the Speech-Language-Hearing Center while offering treatment to children and adults with a range of communication disorders.

3. Community Outreach The Cougar Literacy Center provides literacy development assessment and instruction to children in first-grade through high school.

4. Teacher Preparation Students teach and interact with pre-Kindergarten–high school students in more than 50 rural, urban and metropolitan school districts. Twenty-four Missouri and Illinois school districts came to campus in spring 2011 to recruit SIUE education majors at the annual Education Fair.

Dental education opens the door to a world of professional opportunities. With a doctor of dental medicine from the School of Dental Medicine, you can practice general dentistry or go on to become a specialist in orthodontics, oral surgery, pediatric dentistry, periodontics or endodontics, among other specialty fields. There are also other options including teaching future dentists, conducting dental research and service with the federal government.

SIUE and the School of Dental Medicine offer a unique combined arts and sciences dental curriculum leading to a bachelor of science and a doctor of dental medicine to a select number of students. If admitted, you’ll complete the three-year pre-professional portion on the Edwardsville campus and the four-year professional component on our Alton campus.

1. Give Kids a Smile Each year, “Give Kids a Smile Day” treats hundreds of area children, providing thousands of dollars worth of free dental treatment, including examinations, X-rays, cleanings, fluoride treatments, fillings and extractions.

Transfer Admission RequirementsStudents who transfer with 30 semester hours or more from an accredited institution will be admitted to SIUE with a minimum cumulative 2.0/4.0 (C) grade point average.

Students who transfer with fewer than 30 semester hours must also submit a high school transcript and ACT/SAT test scores. These students must meet freshman admission requirements.

Transfer CreditSIUE general education requirements are considered met if

� Students have received an A.A., A.S. or A.S.A. degree from an accredited two-year institution that conforms to the Illinois Community College Board

� SIUE accepts Advanced Placement (AP) and some CLEP credit toward a baccalaureate degree

SIUE does not limit the number of transfer credits from other schools; however, at least 60 semester hours of credit must be earned at a four-year college or university. We know that paying for college can be stressful. At SIUE, our financial aid office is ready to help you find options to finance your education and realize your dreams.

The first step is to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). You can link from the SIUE financial aid website at siue.edu/financialaid or directly at fafsa.gov.

Financial aid is available to degree seeking students enrolled at least half time and maintaining satisfactory academic progress each term. March 1 is the priority filing date to be considered for financial assistance.

Cougar Pride Scholarship12/1/2011

Up to $12,000 over 4 years as funding is available

Admitted Freshmen (with an ACT ≥ 23) and Transfers (3.0 GPA in at least 24 semester hours in transferable coursework) will be considered

Johnetta Haley Scholarship12/1/2011

Up to $12,000 over 4 years as funding is available

Admitted Freshmen (with an ACT ≥ 23) and Transfers (3.0 GPA in at least 24 semester hours in transferable coursework) will be considered. This scholarship is designed to support enrollment of students who are underrepresented in their anticipated field of study.

Premier Metropolitan Achievement Award (PREMIER)12/1/2011

Special tuition rate to 1.2 times the current Illinois in-state tuition rate as funding is available

First-time, full time admitted freshmen with a composite ACT score of ≥ 23 (1070 SAT) from the following Missouri counties; St. Louis City; St. Louis County; Franklin County; Jefferson County; Lincoln County; St. Charles County; St. Francois County; Ste. Genevieve County; Warren County; and Washington County.

Geographic Enhancement Opportunity Award (GEO) 12/1/2011

Special tuition rate to 1.2 times the current Illinois in-state tuition rate as funding is available

First-time, full-time admitted out-of-state freshmen with a composite ACT score ≥ 23 (1070 SAT), or who have been recognized for outstanding talent through a competitive departmental process

e-GuaranteeLimited funding. Preferential consideration will be given to students completing the application for admission on or before 12/1/2011 and the FAFSA by 3/1/12

Amounts will vary. After completion of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), and applying all available State and Federal programs to a student’s account, SIUE will assist families with filling remaining unmet financial need. Awards will be made as funding is available.

Admitted Illinois freshmen with an ACT ≥ 19, $0 Expected Family Contribution (EFC) and family income levels at or below federal poverty guidelines.
