The medical field says we’ve made great strides, but tell this to the family who just buried a loved one or the dad who only has six months to live. The experts say nutrition and lifestyle blended with a positive outlook are

essential. Endless theories abound. So this issue is dedicated to a different kind of Home Town Hero, those who’ve been affected by the evils of cancer. All We Want for Christmas is a Cure for Cancer

There’s an old cliché that was once popular around the academia circles many years ago which went something like this: “Learning is Light”. While I never knew what that cliché meant back then, I certainly would have never imagined that it would be such a profound ideology that I would come to highly regard one day as one of the key secrets to humanity. Like many people, I am an avid reader. There isn’t a day that passes where I do not have some sort of book or media source which helps me broaden my perspective on life. As such, one of my favorite

hobbies is browsing the local bookstore looking for goodies to take home to my bedside. During one visit, I couldn’t help but take notice of one of the movies that was placed on display. The movie was “Do the Right Thing” by director Spike Lee. For those readers who haven’t seen the movie, it is a brilliant piece of filmmaking that takes a raw and relentless look at the dynamics of race relations during the late 80’s in the neighborhoods of New York City. Although the movie was very controversial at the time, it was a prime example of educating the public about what really goes on in society contrary to what the status quo may dictate. While revisiting the movie in my mind, I couldn’t help but parallel the film’s main theme to the state of things occurring today, and from a more narrow perspective, what is occurring in our very own backyards. Certainly Lewisville, Flower Mound and Highland Village are becoming more culturally diverse as these cities grow, at least from the standard that we have already set concerning multiculturalism in an affluent society. But are we really diverse in our thinking from the broader scheme of things ? Certainly we think of race, gender, ethnicity etc. when opening the multicultural umbrella, but do segments such as socioeconomic division, the affluent view of destitution, stereotypes and status-based opportunity fit into the standard of how our communities should be populated ? How many of us would clean a stranger’s home for free? Although it sounds a bit odd, this is exactly what Cleaning for a Reason’s founder, Debbie Sardone, and the members of her national organization do for

women undergoing cancer treatment. In essence, Cleaning for a Reason is a non-profit which partners with maid services to offer free professional house cleaning to improve the lives of women undergoing cancer treat-ment. Debbie’s reasoning is simple. Fighting cancer is difficult enough, but living with the daily challenges of it is even tougher. Yes, this wonderful organization reaches out to a very significant sector of our society in such a practical way. They may not have the cure for cancer, but will help those who are battling this disease in some-thing as practical as cleaning their homes. The concept is touching and their goodwill is spreading as they ser-vice throughout North America. 1002 cleaning partners have helped more than 11,000 patients with more than $3,025,652 cleanings donated. Not long ago I was forced to face my mortality. It wasn’t nostalgic and sentimental. Rather, it was a rare moment of reality and raw emotion. I have a lump in my breast. I haven’t worried about it but it’s been there too long and now I’m concerned. So I had my first mammogram, ex-cept it was a bit more thorough due to the intrusion in my breast. You know the saying, “All we have to fear is fear it-self ”? I understand this in the deeper sense but sometimes fear can be tangible. I faced my fears and the mammo-gram process wasn’t horrific, just uncomfortable. Several women were in the waiting room with me. We waited to-gether, knowing each other’s secret. We have a lump in our breast and our doctor wants to take a closer look. What I experienced as we waited was a friendly atmosphere and a quiet bravery, camaraderie, if you will. We chatted. As women we always do. It’s our nature. A new friend and I spoke openly of our experience, the odds, the solutions and alternatives. The exam was a bit uncomfortable but so are my feet when I wear five inch heels all day. Fortunate-ly, I was given my results before I left and the report was good. In relief, I wept all the way to my car. As I walked away from the building, with a sense of renewed gratitude, I also wondered about my new friends. Were their reports as good as mine? I hope so. This is a special request to our friends and readers; please get your mammograms. Don’t put it off because early detection is the key.

27 years ago today I lost my mother. She set a wonderful example of how to put one foot in front of the other and do the right thing. She had no extended family closer than Oregon, my dad had died in 1965 and Social Security told her no on assistance back then for three kids. She did not realize that was a standard answer and so she never re-applied. She dropped out of school after her own mom died when she was thirteen and became the mom for younger siblings for a couple years until my grandfather remarried. She paid her way through college and got her bachelor of science degree in nursing. She was forty when she had me and by the time I was five my dad left her with three kids... Alone! I was nine when he died. She made sure we had the things we needed. She also made sure we learned a work ethic of doing what ever it takes to get it done! We went to church every Sunday unless we were dead. I respect her tremendously and thank her for hanging tough when her basic nature was anything but tough!! I hope to leave a legacy that my kids can be proud of. Thank you Lord for Godly parents and examples!!! Until I see you again mom... I love you!!

I’m asked many questions about video surveillance systems. There are plenty on the market from the ridiculously inexpensive all the way to broadcast video with searchable facial recognition. Anyone can now afford to own a basic camera system installed anywhere (covert or not) and view it on your computer, iPad or smart phone. Great tool for verification, even better for management, documentation and recall. As with any electronic device, the number of choices are only limited to your budget.

When choosing, the more desirable recorders (DVR’s) use a “dynamic” IP address as opposed to a more expensive static IP address, and have a hard drive of 500 gigabytes or more. Rule 1: the more cameras, the more memory you will utilize. The larger the hard drive the more memory you will have. Rule 2: the better the camera and lens, the better the picture. Of course there are more variables all attached to costs.

There’s an interesting twist to this trend. The opportunities accompanying the increased demand of video are bringing new people and companies into the business, one that is regulated by the Texas Department of Public Safety. As an example I’ve seen many computer technology firms advertising the installation of a camera system in your home or business that will interface with a computer network, which is logically, a natural addition to their business. But of those that I inquired, none were licensed, some disagreed with the requirement and most resented the fact that I asked.

For people who like to research these articles let me list the actual statute numbers. The Texas Security Laws Occupational Code Chapter 1702.002(1) (C) specifically defines camera systems as security devices. In the Private Security Administrative Rules Chapter 35, (35.1(17) )video cameras are further defined as security devices (which also lists exceptions for certain specific uses of video). So in a nutshell, those to whom the public have charged with regulating the companies we consumers use, state that surveillance systems are defined as security devices and the sales, service and installation can only be performed by a company licensed by the Texas Department of Public Safety, Private Security Board.

When considering a security contractor, check to see if they have the proper credentials at http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/RSD/PSB/Reports/searchOptions.htm. This is especially important with video because theoretically the installer may have access to your images, recorded memory and the use thereof.

I love to discover unknown authors; especially those who produce novels in my favorite fiction genre of action/adventure. You know the type – the one that features an army of really good

bad guys and one really bad good guy, leading to an enormous body count. You can imagine the pure joy I felt when one such unknown, a new paperback Slash and Burn by

Matt Hilton, mysteriously floated to the top of my stack. The back cover promised a violent tale of suspense with a mind-bending plot, and a furious pace, and so on, and blah blah blah. It was when I examined the front cover that I made the decision to start reading. A statement by a national book review organization at the top of the cover proclaimed “Jack Reacher could have some worthy com-

petition,” in reference to the popular Lee Child character. This bold claim provoked me into having a look for myself.Joe Hunter is the ex-Special Ops/CIA who was just sitting on the beach minding his own business when approached by a beautiful

lady, Kate, wanting help finding her missing sister in Kentucky. Happens all the time, right? His first stop was the home of the sister, where two professional bad guys immediately start shooting big guns at the pair of would-be heroes, indicating that sister had made someone angry before disappearing.

Joe and Kate barely escape with their lives, but draw the ire of seemingly every hit man in the Northern Hemisphere in the process. Kate is eventually kidnapped and transported to, of all places - Pilot Point, Texas, just a few miles North of Lewisville, Texas, and the DFW Airport. I know! I immediately read the author’s bio inside the back cover, thinking I must surely have met this Matt Hilton fella, only to find out he is an ex-cop from England. But he is writing a story that happened less than one mile from where I once lived. Go figure.

I found Hilton to be quite acceptable as a writer, with a brisk pace and interesting and unpredictable action. He painted a good pic-ture of the final scene, and the story line and ending were plausible and satisfying. He is years away from replacing Lee Child as one of the best writers in the U.S., however. And to be clear, Joe Hunter is certainly no Jack Reacher. Overall, I would give Slash and Burn a 7 out of 10. Easy to read but not so addictive that you miss an entire weekend of college and pro football games.

The local reference is fun, but the Lee Child reference on the front cover that led me to pick this book up ensured I would be disap-pointed eventually.

Shopping Local Makes $ense

Having grown up in Dallas, when I moved to this area 30+ years ago I felt like I had come to a really “small” town. We had one small grocery store, a couple of banks, and not much else. I often found

myself leaving the area to shop for goods and services, as well as for entertainment, shopping, etc., most of the time. But over the course of the years, as you know all too well, our communities have exploded with development. I have seen my little circle grow increasingly smaller lately, and that makes me happy! It may sound like I prefer to live a sheltered, secluded existence, but that’s not the case. While I love ad-venture and travel as much as anyone, what I really love is that I can get almost anything I need by driving only a mile or two from home. I am within minutes of my doctor’s office, the pharmacy, my bank, my dry cleaners, and the grocery store. But I am also equally as close to the movie theater, my favorite restaurants, great shopping, and my favorite car wash and bakery. In addition, if I am in need of a big box store, I can

find one right down the street. Obviously there are times when venturing outside this community is fun – even necessary. But mostly you can find everything here when it comes to shopping, dining and entertainment. Take advantage of the many opportunities offered in your own community. You will discover the conveniences of the area, and as a bonus, when you shop the stores that are close to home, you are supporting your community by keeping tax dollars at work locally, which is good for all of us.

Awesome Sausage, Apple and Apricot Stuffing

INGREDIENTS:

1 1/2 cups cubed whole wheat bread 3 3/4 cups cubed white bread 1 pound ground Spicy Breakfast sausage 1 cup chopped onion 3/4 cup chopped celery 2 1/2 teaspoons dried sage 1 1/2 teaspoons dried rosemary 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme 1 Golden Delicious apple, cored and copped 3/4 cup dried Apricots chopped ¼ Cup Calvados – Apple Jack or cider 1/3 cup minced fresh parsley 1 cup turkey stock 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted

DIRECTIONS:

1. Preheat oven to 350 degree F. Spread the white and whole wheat bread cubes in a single layer on a large baking sheet. Bake for 5 to 7 minutes in the preheated oven, or until evenly toasted. Transfer toasted bread cubes to a large bowl. 2. Warm Calvados and Apricots – Let stand to reconstitute 3. In a large skillet, cook the sausage and onions over medium heat, stirring and breaking up the lumps until evenly browned. Add the celery, sage, rosemary, and thyme; cook, stirring, for 2 minutes to blend flavors. 4. Pour sausage mixture over bread in bowl. Mix in chopped apples, apricots, parsley,. Drizzle with turkey stock and melted butter, and mix lightly. Enjoy!
