BC Conservative Party leader John Cummins says

the Northern Gateway pipeline project is important

to British Columbia and should go ahead — but that

doesn’t mean he would give it blanket approval.

In an interview in Parksville

on Saturday, Cummins said he

sees the pipeline as a good idea.

“It will get British Colum-

bian resources to the world

market,” he said.

“We will earn more for our

resources. Those pipelines are

important to the economy of

Canada and of British Colum-

bia.”Cummins took premier

Christy Clark to task for not

expressing support for the

Northern Gateway project,

waiting instead to hear the

results of an environmental

review.“Our view is that this is

good for British Columbia,” he

said. “There is a huge number

of jobs in the construction phase, and Lord knows, we

can use those jobs. As well, there will be ongoing ben-

efi ts to British Columbia afterwards.”

However, he stressed he would like to see a negotia-

tion to garner increased benefi ts for British Columbi-

ans.“We should be trying to negotiate some increased

benefi ts from the pipeline, when possible,” he said. “I

think government has to approach these projects and

work with industry and let industry know it supports

them, whether it be a pipeline or a mine.”

The district now has a new online public forum run-

ning on their website at www.sd69.bc.ca.

While response has been slow so far, the board

is optimistic that as word gets out it will become a

continuation of the vibrant discussions going on in the

community over various school-related issues in the

past year.“It’s just another form of communication, I hope it

gets well used,” said trustee Julie Austin introducing

the feature at the last school board meeting.

They hope it will be used for ongoing construc-

tive discussions between everyone from students and

teachers to senior management and the board, parents

and the wider community in general.

It has been “kick started” with a handful of hot top-

ics like busing, budgeting and visioning and will add

other topics as they come up.

Four of the fi ve member board were newly elected

in November, having campaigned on a need for more

transparency and open communication between the

board and public.

They stressed that the online forum will be in addi-

tion to any other ongoing public forums and various

forms of communication, not replacing anything.

SKIP - Jim Cotter - Vernon/Kelowna curling clubs. In its current form, Team Cotter has been around for only one year, but Jim has been curling with some team members for many more years. A 29-year curling veteran himself, Jim placed fourth at Olympic trials in 2005, was fourth at the B.C. mens championship in 2008 and participated in the 2011 B.C. mens provincials. With a diploma in computer science, Jim is a health care data worker and is in the process of getting his coaching certifi cation for Vernon junior curling teams.

THIRD - Kevin Folk - Kelowna Curling Club. This is Kevin’s fi fth year curling with Team Cotter. Over his 22 years of curling, Kevin has been both a provincial fi nalist in mens curling (2003, ‘06) and a B.C. champion in 2008 and 2011. Kevin was part of the team that placed fourth at the 2008 mens nationals. He is also a world champion in the 2000 juniors and was a national fi nalist in juniors in 1999. The senior account manager at a Royal Bank with a business administration degree from Okanagan University College, Kevin enjoys golf, boating, movies, kickboxing and slo pitch in his spare time.

SECOND - Tyrel Griffi th - Kelowna Curling Club. This is Tyrel’s fi rst year with Team Cotter, but he has been curling for 13 years. A student in his second year of business school, Tyrel has been a provincial champion in junior mens curling in 2002 and 2005. He

was Canadian runner-up in the junior nationals in 2006 and an all star team selection. In men’s curling, Tyrel won silver in Japan with Team Canada in 2007 and participated in the men’s provincials in 2009 as a skip. Tyrel teaches curling at various mini camps and likes to travel, play golf and fi sh.

LEAD - Rick Sawatsky - Kelowna/Vernon curling clubs. A 27-year curler, Rick has teamed up with Team Cotter for nine years. A utili-ties technician with a diploma in criminal justice, Rick was a B.C. junior mens champ in 1996 and placed fourth at that year’s nation-als. He part of the fourth place team at the 2005 Olympic trials and was a B.C. men’s champion in 2008 (fourth at the Brier) and again in 2011.

SKIP - Ken McArdle - Royal City Curling Club. This is Ken’s third B.C. men’s provincial tournament. He participated in 1994 and 2008, as well as the B.C. junior championships in 1984. Ken has been curling for 35 years and this is his fi rst year with Team McArdle. A coach in the 2011 junior provincials, Ken is a sales manager who likes to golf.

THIRD - Doug Wilcock - Royal City Curling Club. A mill worker with 35 year of curling experience, Doug was the West Coast Classic championship skip in 2001. He also won the Abbotsford cash event that same year and has been involved in multiple zone spots in men’s curling over the years. He enjoys golf and baseball in his spare time.

SECOND - Jared Bowles - Royal City Curling Club. He likes to golf, run and curl. Jared was champion of the Nova Scotia juniors in 2006. He placed fourth in the Canadians that same year. In 2009 he was ninth in the Nova Scotia men’s provincials. He added a fourth place in the same event in 2010. With a total of 15 years on the ice, Jared was a volunteer at the 2010 Tim Hortons Brier in Halifax. He is a casino marketing manager with a degree from St. Francis Xavier University.

LEAD - Kyle Jackson - Royal City Curling Club. Kyle has been curling for nine years and has already gathered a good list of ap-pearances. In 2007, he was seventh in the juvenile provincials. In 2008, he placed fi fth at the B.C. Winter Games. He was fourth in the juniors in 2011 and seventh that same year in the mixed event. In his fi rst year of a carpentry apprenticeship, Kyle likes golf and baseball when not curling.

SKIP - Sean Geall - North Delta Curling Club. Sean says his rink has only been together for one weekend, but already they’re in the 2012 men’s provincial championships. With 24 years experience on the ice, Sean was the winner of the men’s provincials in 2009. A rentals and sales rep, Sean also likes golf.

THIRD - Ken Maskiewich - Royal City Curling Club. Ken gets a little more specifi c, saying the rink has been together since Dec. 9, 2011. Ken has been curling for 33 years and this will be his tenth provincials. He was provincial winner in 2011 and runner up in 2007 and ‘08. A sales and marketing manager with a diploma from BCIT, Ken likes to golf and play hockey.

LEAD - Mark Olson - North Delta Curling Club. For 27 years, Mark has been on the ice. This BC Ferries deckhand has also been a provincial champ in 2009 in mens curl-ing, as well as runner up in 2010.

SECOND - Bill Fisher - North Delta Curling Club. Bill’s got a great sense of humour, stating he is a pilot with no education - “They can teach monkeys to fl y,” he writes. A 28-year veteran of curling, Bill was a mixed provincials champ in 1998 and men’s runner up in 1993, 2007, ‘08 and ‘09.

SKIP - Brent Pierce - Royal City Curling Club. Brent has been curling for too many years to mention and has spent the past year curling with Team Pierce. Brent is sales manager and is currently taking coaching courses and is a director of Region 11 and director of West Coast Curling Classic and is a board member of WCPA. In 1987 he was B.C. junior champion and repeated the feat in 1998. He was B.C. champion in 2009. He enjoys fi shing, reading, parenting and being a loving husband.

THIRD - Jeff Richard - with the Royal City Curling Club has been curling for 23 years in Kelowna and has been with Team Pierce for one year. A food and beverage manager for the Sunset Ranch Golf and Country Club, he is a Level 2 certifi ed instructor. In 1997 he placed third in the B.C. Jr. Men’s tournament, was runner-up in 1999 and was skip in 2010 for the B.C. champion team. He enjoys golf and traveling.

SECOND - Kevin Recksiedler - with the Royal City Curling Club, has curled for “lots” of years, but this is the fi rst year he has been with Team Pierce. In 2004 he was provincial winner of the Men’s division and he repeated that feat in 2009. In 2010 he was provincial runner up. He works as a territory manager.

LEAD - Grant Dezura - is with the Royal City Curling Club and has curled for 25 years. In 1998 he was B.C. Mixed winner and in 2009 he was B.C. Men’s runner up. A professional juggler by profession, he enjoys hanging out with his curling team.

SKIP - Tom Buchy - Kimberley Curling Club. Tom has been curling for 34 years and has plenty of provincial and national experience. He participated in mixed provincial playdowns in 1997, 2005, 2007 and 2008. In men’s play, he went to the B.C.s in 1995, 2005, 2007 and 2008. Tom went to the nationals in mixed curling in 2006 and 2011. An employee of the City of Kimberley Works Department, Tom has had his rink together for four years.

SECOND - Dave Toffolo - Kimberley Curling Club. Dave spends a lot of time around ice, as he’s the City of Kimberley’s Zamboni driver. A curler for 31 years, Dave has been with the Buchy rink for four. A hunter, fi sherman and family man, Dave has been to provincial playdowns in mixed curling in 1991, ‘93, ‘94, ‘96, 2006, ‘07, ‘10, ‘11 and in 2012. He has also been the B.C. mens’ fi nals in 1993, 2005, ‘07, ‘08 and ‘11. He went to the nationals in mixed curling in 1994, 2006 and 2011.

THIRD - Ken McHargue - Elkford Curling Club. Ken has been curling for about 40 years and has been with the Buchy rink for four years. A heavy equipment operator in the Elk Valley, Ken enjoys golf, music and the outdoors. He has also played in many provincial and national curling events from 1990 to 2011, including trips to provincial mixed and men’s events, the 1991 men’s Brier and the 2008 Ca-nadian senior men’s championship.

LEAD - Darren Will - Kimberley Curling Club. A 36-year veteran of curling, Darren is a gen-eral manager of the GM dealership. An active athlete and volunteer in curling, Darren was a regional qualifi er in men’s curling events from 1997 to 2012. He was a provincial mens fi nal-ist in ‘98, 2005, ‘07, ‘08, ‘10 and ‘11. He was a mixed curling fi nalist in 2011 and in 2012 is a provincial fi nalist in mens curling. He enjoys golf, skiing, hockey and biking.

SKIP - Tom Shypitka - curls at his home club in Cranbrook and has been curling for 38 years. In 1979 he placed third in the junior category at the Canada Winter Games, while in 1991 he placed third at the Brier. In 2010 he was provincial winner of the Men’s division and appeared at the Provincials in 1990, 1991, 2003, 2008 and 2010. Tom is a fi nancial advisor whose hobby is making women blush.

THIRD - Josh Firman - hails from Creston and has been with Team Shypitka for two months. He has been involved in curling for 23 years and works as an ice tech. His favourite hobby involves beer.

SECOND - Steve Tersmette - has been with Team Shypitka for two months, but has been curling at his home club in Kimberley for 13 years. He has com-peted in the 1999 to 2003 as a Junior in the Southerns in Alberta. He also competed in 2009 in the Men’s division in the Interiors. He is a self-employed carpenter who enjoys mountaineering and climbing.

LEAD - Greg Terill - is in his fi rst year with Team Shypitka but he has been curling for 20 years in Creston. He competed in the mixed category in the provincials in 2009. Greg is a Columbia Brewery employee who enjoys Baseball and hunting.

SKIP - Brian Windsor - curls at the Kamloops Curling Club and has been on the ice for 40 years. During that time he was named the B.C. winner in 2005 in the mixed category and in the men’s category in 2006. Those successes followed his 1991 title as Alberta winner. Brian is a business owner who enjoys a good game of poker.

THIRD - Brad Thompson - is no stranger to curling, having been on the ice for 24 years as a competitive curler. In 2001 he was named provincial runner up in the juniors and in 2008 he competed in the mixed provincials. Brad works for G&T Metallurgical and he tries to be involved in all events hosted in Kamloops. He enjoys soccer, softball, volleyball and golf.

SECOND - Michael

Smith - has been curl-ing for 25 years and currently curls at the Kamloops Curling Club. Michael is a mainte-nance superintendent who enjoys golf, vol-leyball and skiing in his spare time.

LEAD - Adam Windsor - has been curling for six years in Kamloops and is in his fi rst year with Team Windsor. Adam is an electri-cian who enjoys snow-boarding and softball.

SKIP - Darren Heath - Vernon Curling Club. With 30-plus years in curling, Darren has been playing at a high level for years. He was national runner up in Dominion curling in 2009 and played in provincials tournaments in 2009, ‘10 and ‘11 - for a total of nine times in his career. An ice technician, this is his fi rst year having Team Heath. He writes that his hobbies are “indoor suntanning and going to the petting zoo.”

THIRD - Dave Belway - Salmon Arm Curling Club. A drywaller by trade, Dave has been curling for 24 years. He has been to the men’s provincials in 1996, 2000 and 2011. He went to the mixed provincials in 2010. Dave, who likes golf, quadding and snowmobiling, is also a junior curling coach.

SECOND - Darin Lafule - Richmond Curl-ing Club. For 33 years Darin has been curl-ing. During that time, he has been to the mixed and mens provincials - 2003-’04 and 2006-’07 in mixed and 2010-’11 and 2011-’12 in mens. A restaurant general manager, Darin likes to golf and has been a volun-teer curling clinic instructor. This is his fi rst year with Team Heath.

LEAD - Darrell Houston - Vernon Curling Club. When he’s not golfi ng, Darrell is en-joying curling, which he has been doing for the last 34 years. This is his fi rst year with the Heath rink. Darrell participated in the 2010 and ‘11 men’s provincials. He works as a Canadian Superstore supervisor.

SKIP/THIRD - Chris Baier - Royal City Curling Club. Chris has been curling for 15 years and for the last year, has been curling under Team Baier. Chris is an HVAC apprentice and enjoys golf and playing sports. His curling career has taken him to two other provincial tournaments, where he won the junior curling championships in 2004. He was provincial runner up in the years 2005 to 2007.

FOURTH - Michael Johnson - Royal City Curling Club. Michael has been curling for 10 years and this is his fi rst year with Team Baier. A full time student seeking his BSc in mathematics, this will be Michael’s fi rst provincial championship.

SECOND - Jay Wakefi eld - Royal City Curling Club. A 15-year veteran of curling, Jay in a computer engineer in his career, with an education in same. He has been with Team Baier for one year. This will be Jay’s fourth trip to the provincials - he and his team placed third in the B.C. junior champion-ships in 2007, fi fth in 2010 and seventh in 2011. He also placed eighth in the junior nationals in 2008. In his spare time, he enjoys snowboarding, cycling and read-ing.

LEAD - John Cullen - Royal City Curling Club. A teacher by trade with the BA from the University of British Columbia, John has been curling for 13 years. He placed fi fth in the 2010 men’s provincial playdowns and seventh in 2011. He is also an active curling vol-unteer, who enjoys reading, the drums and hockey.

SKIP - Ron Vanderstar - has been heading up Team Vanderstar for one year and has curled for a total of 15 years with the Smith-ers Curling Club. He competed in the regional qualifi er 2005, 2007, 2008 and 2010 and also competed in the mixed division at the provincials in 2006 and 2011. Ron is a forest technician who enjoys hiking, paddling, skiing, hunting, fi shing, canoe trips and wilderness adventures.

THIRD - Lyle Hensrud - is in his fi rst year with Team Vanderstar and has curled for a total of 40 years at his home club in Prince George. He has competed in the regional qualifi er in the men’s division from 2000 to 2006 and also competed in the provincials in 2008 and in the senior men’s category in 2009. Lyle is a protection offi cer with Mackenzie pulp who enjoys tennis, aquatics and pickleball.

SECOND - Wade Eberle - is with his fi rst year with Team Vanderstar and has been curling for 25 years in Prince George. He has competed at the regionals in 2006. Wade is a brewery worker at Pacifi c Western Brewery who enjoys baseball, hockey and reffi ng hockey.

LEAD - Leonard Vanderstar - is in his fi rst year with the team and has been curling for more than 20 years with his home club in Smithers. He has competed in the men’s regional qualifi er in 2007, 2008 and 2010. Leonard is a biologist who enjoys outdoor wilderness activities such as mountaineering, hunting, wilderness adventures, white water rafting trips and fi shing.

SKIP - Jody Epp - Victoria Curling Club. With men’s and juniors provincials experience under his belt, this is Jody’s third year with his own rink. He’s also a level three coach, who has been curling for 25 years. A marketing manager, Jody has been involved in playdowns at various levels for 22 years. He enjoys fi shing, squash and golf.

SECOND - Brad Kocurek - Victoria Curling Club. Brad has been curling for 32 years and has been on Team Epp for three years. He has parlayed that experience into a couple of coastal and provincial appearances in 2010 and 2012. An executive director in information technology for the province, Brad also enjoys golf, curling (of course) and softball.

LEAD - James York - Victoria Curling Club. James is a cabinetmaker off the ice. He has been curling for 25 years and with Team Epp for three years. He participated in the men’s PCCAs in 1993. He en-joys fi shing, camping and hiking outside of curling.

THIRD - Blair Cusack - Victoria Curling Club. This is the seventh time to the provincials for Blair, a retired curler with degrees in eco-nomics and education, and who has been in arenas for 40 years. From 1994 to 2010, he has been a part of B.C. fi nals and Canadian championships in curling. For the last three years, Blair has been on Team Epp. Blair likes to read, play badminton, go backpacking and play war games.

SKIP - Steve Waatainen - curls with his home club in Nanaimo and has been on the ice for 31 years. In 1989 he competed as second for Al Sutherland in the provincials and in 2007, 2009 and 2011 he competed as skip in the provincials. Steve is an information systems technical analyst for the Vancouver Island Health Authority who enjoys golf and computers.

THIRD - Kevin Weinreich - is in his fi rst year with Team Waatainen but has been curling for 15 years. In 2005 he competed in the provincial high school event, while he moved up to compete at the Coastals in the men’s division in both 2007 and 2009. In 2009 and 2010 he competed with the University of Victoria in the Canadians. Kevin is a painter who enjoys tennis, road hockey, reading, history and music.

SECOND - Sean Krepps - curls in Nanaimo and has been on the ice for 34 years. In 1986 and 1988 he competed in the Ontario Provincial Juniors, moving up to compete in the Ontario Men’s regionals in 1994. Sean is a sales representative for Volkswagen who enjoys a good round of golf.

LEAD - Keith Clarke - curls at the Nanaimo Curling Centre and has been on the ice for 14 years. In 2009 he competed in the provin-cials in the men’s division. Keith is a Sawyer who enjoys taking to the golf links in his spare time.

SKIP - Neil Dangerfi eld - Victoria Curling Centre. Neil has been curling for around 30 years and has had his current rink together for six years. A research technician with Fisheries and Oceans with degrees in chemistry and biochemistry, Neil has been an athlete, offi cial and volunteer with his home club. A lover of classic cars and a family man, Neil has participated in past provincials in 1997 and 2011.

THIRD/FOURTH - Denis Sutton - didn’t list a home club, but has been with the Dangerfi eld rink for six years — and says he has been curling “forever,” or about 45 years. An avid golfer who enjoys karaoke and running, Denis is a curling instructor and DJ in his spare time. He won the CanSpiel alongside Randy Ferbey in 1974.

LEAD - Glen Allen - Victoria Curling Club. Glen is a 34-year curling veteran who has been with the team for six years. On the faculty at Camosun College, Glen is an athlete and coach of the game, as well as a volunteer who took part as a statistician in the 1999

Canadian Mixed and 2009 Scotties. In 2011, he was part of the provincial runner-up rink. He was part of the qualifying team in Men’s curling in 2008 and ‘09. As a junior, Glen was a champion in 1981 and took part in the 1986 BC Winter Games.

SECOND - Darren Boden - Victoria Curling Club. A business analyst with a commerce degree, Darren has also been curling for 27 years and with Team Dangerfi eld for six years. He has been a regular club volunteer and in his spare time is a coach and player in mixed fastball. Darren is a coast qualifi er in curling in 2001, ‘08 and ‘09 — as well as a B.C. silver medalist in men’s curling in 2011.

SKIP - Jay Peachey, Royal City Curling Club. Jay has added to his 32 years of curling by running a recreation league at the North Shore Winter Club. A chartered accountant with a bachelors in business administration and who likes golf, Jay was B.C. men’s provincial runner up in 1998 and again in 2008. Jay was on the rink that won the 2004 men’s championships. He went on to place third in the national Brier. This is Team Peachey’s fi rst year together.

THIRD - Ron Leech, Royal City Curling Club. Ron has 33 years of curling experience. He was third in the 2004 Brier and in 1994 was Canadian men’s college curling champ. He likes golf and is a parole offi cer with a bachelor of arts degree.

LEAD - Dwayne Uyede, Royal City Curling Club. For 35 years Dwayne has enjoyed curling. In that time, he was in mixed provincials (1995, ‘97 and 2006) and men’s (various years). A college grad and parts spe-cialist today, Dwayne likes to play volleyball, softball and most sports.

SECOND - Bryan Kedzioria, Royal City Curling Club. A heavy equip-ment operator by trade, he has been throwing much lighter rocks for 13 years. Bryan was a champion in ju-venile curling in 2005 and repeated that feat in junior curling in both 2006 and 2008. He likes to golf when not on the ice.

TEAM DANGERFIELD - Victoria

TEAM PEACHEY - Royal City


SKIP - Wylie Eden - Penticton Curling Club. Wylie has been curling for 27 years and this is the fi rst year with a team in his name with its current lineup. A realtor who graduated from the UBC school of business, Wylie has participated in the men’s provincials in 2007 and the interior fi nals in 2008.

THIRD - Sean Matheson - Penticton Curling Club. Sean comes to Team Eden with a provincial pedigree — third place fi nishes in 1991’s juniors and Canada Games and another bronze in 2008’s men’s fi nals. He was also in the 2007 men’s provincials and the 1996 northern Ontario men’s provincials. A media sales trainer, Sean really enjoys “slamming brooms.”

SECOND - Kurt Roberts - Kelowna Curling Club. A self-employed civil engineer, Kurt joins team Eden for the fi rst time and has 32 years on the ice under his belt. A Zone 11 champ in men’s curling in 2011, Kurt enjoys sports and travel.

LEAD - Tyler Jaeger - Kelowna Curling Club. A relative rookie on Team Eden, Tyler has been curl-ing for only 15 years. In that time, however, he has played in the 2007 and 2008 men’s provin-cials and interiors, respectively. A salesman with degrees in his-tory and sociology, Tyler also says he’s an inventor, blogger and anchorman.

SKIP - Jay Tuson - curls with the Victoria Curling Club while he has been on Team Tuson for three years, he has been on the ice for a total of 39 years. During this time he competed in the 2001 Brier in the men’s division and in 2002 was provincial runner up in the men’s category. In 2003 he placed third in the provincials in the men’s division. He works at CEO Insurance brokerage and enjoys golf and skiing.

Third - Colin Mantik - has been with Team Tuson for three years but has been curling for 36 years. He competed in the provincials in 2000, 2002, 2010 and 2012. He is a fi refi ghter who who enjoys golf, boating and diving.

SECOND - Glen Jackson - is in his third year with Team Tuson and has been curling for 45 years. He was provincial winner in the men’s divi-sion in 2001, was a world winner in 1975 in the Junior category and was provincial winner in the men’s cate-gory in 1980. He is a business owner who enjoys teasing and drinking.

LEAD - Ken Tucker - has been with Team Tuson for three years and has been curling for a total of 39 years. He has competed at the provincials in the men’s category six times, in-cluding in 2010. Ken is a general manager who enjoys golf, waterski-ing and fi shing.
