Michael ButtermanMusic Director, Shreveport Symphony Orchestra

Dear Friends,Old and new, familiar and eye-opening—the Shreveport Symphony

has embraced both the CLASSIC AND THE CREATIVE throughout

its 65-year history. From timeless masterpieces to world premieres,

from renowned virtuosi to up-and-coming young artists, the SSO’s

off erings have profoundly enriched and stimulated our community’s

cultural life. Our 2012-13 WILLIS-KNIGHTON MASTERWORKS

SERIES refl ects a continued commitment to presenting both

well-loved favorites and fresh discoveries.

We have classics galore, from Vivaldi’s Four Seasons and Tchaikovsky’s

Pathétique to Rhapsody in Blue and Beethoven’s Pastorale. But we’ll also hear a fantastic mandolin concerto infused with Blue Ridge bluegrass, an amazing new work for beatboxer and orchestra, and the premiere of a newly orchestrated score to Moonbot Studio’s Academy Award-winning fi lm, The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore, performed live and in synch with the fi lm itself. From classics by John Williams, Bernard Herrmann and John Barry, to works created right here in Shreveport, we’ll hear (and see!) an evening of unforgettable entertainment.

I’m thrilled that we will be joined by two of the music world’s top violinists—Vadim Gluzman and Philippe Quint—and we’ll host a pair of gold medalist pianists—Jon Nakamatsu (Van Cliburn Gold Medalist) and James Dick (Shreveport’s own Wideman Piano Competition Winner). We’ll also hear from two of Broadway’s leading talents in a unique evening entitled Wicked Divas, and we’ll marvel at the virtuoso talents of mandolinist Jeff Midkiff and Shodekeh’s incomparable vocal beats. Our ever-popular Holiday Pops

concerts are sure to please, as we showcase performers with local roots like our Holiday Pops Children’s Chorus, the Louisiana Dance Theater, and the eminent baritone (and Shreveport native), Timothy Jones.

I invite you to join our family of subscribers today. By subscribing, you affi rm your part in the community of support that says, “Yes, we believe in the value of music.” And that commitment has real impact. While our music makes a diff erence for you, please know that you make a diff erence for us.

I know that you will want to be with us for every moment of our classic and creative 2012-13 season. Make “symphony night” a part of your life this year!

VADIM GLUZMAN, VIOLIN Michael Butterman, conductor

BRAHMS Academic Festival Overture BRUCH Violin Concerto No. 1 in G minor DVOŘÁK Symphony No. 8

We open in classic style, joined by world-renowned violin sensation Vadim Gluzman, whose recent recording of the Bruch concerto received the prestigious Diapason d’Or de L’Année award in Europe. Brahms’ familiar overture abounds with good humor and complements Dvořák’s delightful Symphony No. 8, full of folk-like charm and positive energy.

Photo: Marco Borggreve

“Yes, rockers, Gluzman is that kind of monster—the kind who leaves an audience staggering from the hall, smiling, shaken and re-made. For folks who prefer the classics, I’d sum up Gluzman this way: He is better than Itzhak Perlman, better than Midori, better than Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg and all the other big-name

string titans who have soloed with the LPO in recent years.” ~NOLA.com

JEFF MIDKIFF, MANDOLINMichael Butterman, conductor

Nature’s incomparable beauty, serenity and power have inspired artists throughout the ages. The music in this concert not only evokes impressions of rivers, mountains, birds and rainstorms, but also the people whose lives are profoundly infl uenced by their relationship to the natural world. The Moldau, Smetana’s famous riverscape, and Beethoven’s quintessential work of sound painting, Symphony No. 6 (Pastorale), surround a new work brimming with the spirit of Appalachia—think “Copland meets bluegrass”—by virtuoso mandolinist Jeff Midkiff .

In collaboration with Shreveport’s own Moonbot Studios and the Robinson Film Center,

this event features a screening of the Oscar®-winning short fi lm The Fantastic Flying Books of

Mr. Morris Lessmore with the full SSO performing the world premiere of a newly commissioned

orchestration of the score. We’ll also enjoy some of the best-loved fi lm scores of all time, from Bernard Herrmann and Ennio Morricone to John Williams.

JON NAKAMATSU, PIANOSHODEKEH, BEATBOX/ VOCAL PERCUSSION

Michael Butterman, conductor

Rhythm is music’s life-giving force and it animates every moment of this concert. American infl uence abounds as Copland’s famous cowboy ballet, Rodeo, inspires a Latin-American twist in Ginastera’s lively Estancia. Van Cliburn Gold Medalist Jon Nakamatsu joins us to play two works—we’ll see how Gershwin’s landmark Rhapsody in Blue inspired Ravel to write his own jazzy piano concerto. And the incomparable beatboxer/vocal percussionist, Shodekeh, bridges the worlds of symphony and popular music, much as Gershwin did nearly a century ago.

MUSICAL DISCOVERY SERIES

The SSO’s Musical Discovery Series, with major underwriting from The Community Foundation and the Caddo Parish School Board, is an area-wide educational program serving schools in Caddo and Bossier Parishes. The Musical Discovery Series includes fi ve distinct programs, each specifi cally designed to teach one or more aspects of music:

DISCOVERY CONCERTSIn January 2013, the SSO will invite Caddo and Bossier Parish fourth and fi ft h graders to one of four free performances by the full symphony orchestra at RiverView Theater.

SMALL ENSEMBLESSSO Small Ensemble performances will be off ered in a variety of forms to Caddo and Bossier schools, and will be particularly aimed toward underserved schools.

MUSIC MENTORS SSO musicians will also serve as coaches and mentors to small groups of public school students who are already participating in band or orchestra programs, giving them important one-on-one support and guidance in their musical studies.

MOMENT OF MUSIC Moment of Music will begin in September 2012 with the start of the school year. Up to fi ve participating schools will be sent a curriculum of classical music sections. Each week one selection is played for the entire school each morning. At the end of the week a lesson is given covering history, composition, musical instruments involved, and information about the composer.

MUSIC MEMORY Music Memory is a contest in which participating schools work with third, fourth and fi ft h graders to teach them to recognize selected musical works. Each school then chooses teams of students who must correctly identify the title and composer of each piece at a fi nal live concert by the Shreveport Symphony.

The Musical Discovery Series will serve over 21,000 students, providing enrichment to existing school curricula, and, in some cases, providing the only musical experiences the students will have.
