Coach Taylor, in his 14th year on the coaching staff at Skyline, is back to lead the Spartans for his fourth season. His focus is on making the football experience the best it can be for the players, as well as making sure they give back to the community. He leads an extraor-dinary group of coaches that also have experience and great values to share both on and off the field. Coach Taylor teaches special education and PE at Skyline.
The Taylor Family
I would like to welcome all of you to another exciting season of football for the Skyline Spartans. Once again we anticipate another successful season for the Spartans and the challenge for these coaches and young men to continue the tradition of excellence is one of dedication, hard work and discipline on and off the field. While last year did not end the way we would have all liked, the 2010 season showed the true character and determination of a Spartan by competing to the very end.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the entire Skyline football community for the tremendous support they give our program: Skyline High School Administration and Staff, Skyline High School Booster Club, and the Skyline Cheerleaders. I would like to give a special thanks to the Skyline Gridiron Club and the Skyline Youth Football Association for their remarkable assistance in helping develop our Skyline Football Family BBQ into a tradition which incorporates the High School and Youth Programs. This is just one example that has developed an inclusive Spartan Football community.
The Skyline Gridiron Club has provided countless hours of support to each individual athlete through fundraising and taking the initiative to ensure that whatever is needed is secured. The Skyline Youth Football Association provides young players with a positive experience where they can develop a love for the game of football as well as proper fundamentals and technique. More importantly SYFA has become a true feeder program to help continue the winning tradition at Skyline.
In order to meet these goals, these young men need to continue with the Skyline tradi-tion to take it one game at a time and to continue to improve week by week. The Skyline football team looks forward to another exciting season and we believe with the commitment and dedication of this 2011 football team will provide the entire Skyline community and bring back a championship season.
PROTECT THE TRADITION…….
Welcome to 2011 Skyline Spartan Football

“It‟s a reality of life that men are competitive and the most competitive games draw the most competitive men. That‟s why they‟re there—to compete. They know the rules and the objectives when they get in the game. The objective is to win—fairly, squarely, decently, by the rules—but to win. “ Vince Lombardi

When did Skyline win it‟s first Varsity game, versus which team, and with what score?
Can you name the position coaches that have been at Skyline over the last 15 years that are now head coaches in other
programs? Also, which current coaches were on the sidelines for the opponent in our first 4A loss in 2004?
What year did 2 Spartan Coaches and 5 Players participate in the NFL‟s HSPD National 7on7 Tournament representing the Seattle Seahawks in New Orleans and helped bring home the trophy with a perfect record?

First parent meeting for Spartan Football was held at Beaver Lake Middle School, because Skyline wasn‟t open yet. Can you name the first head coach in this picture? What alumni play-ers or parents can you recognize in this photo? Thanks to Greg Farrar/Issaquah Press for providing this photo.

ALUMNI SUPPORT….
SKYLINE GRIDIRON CLUB
In 2001, a group of Spartan parents were discussing the great experience they had just witnessed when the Skyline team won their first state championship. With a desire to help future teams in some small way, actions were taken to organize a non-profit group, commonly known as the Skyline Gridiron Club.
Over the years, the program has enjoyed a lot of success, and in part, some believe, it is because of the efforts of those alumni parents who lead a consistent, business approach to volunteer tasks each season.
Fund raising efforts start in the off-season and vary in nature and scope. The goal is to insure that the items needed to support the program are there. With an all-volunteer strategy, it is easy for current parents to be involved at what ever level and what ever capacity they are comfortable with. And, it allows the lowest amount of resources are used for organizational operations...the money gets to where it is intended.
There is always interest in how Gridiron manages to do so much and others in the community as well as within other programs around the state often seek guidance. One thing is for sure, the motto that was adopted a few years ago is the guiding principal to all that we engage in ...Attitude, Work Ethic and Tradition Never Graduate.
For more information about what we do, check out the team website at www.SkylineGridiron.com or to get involved, send an email to [email protected]
Skyline Gridiron Club takes great pride in knowing that our efforts will once again help during the upcoming season. We hope you‟ll join our team….we work really hard, but we have a lot of fun!

As a High School Principal I agree with the words of Theodore Roosevelt who said to his children, “I am delighted to have you play football. I believe in rough, manly sports. But I do not believe in them if they degenerate into the sole end of any one‟s existence. I don‟t want you to sacrifice standing well in your studies to any over-athleticism; and I need not tell you that character counts for a great deal more than either intellect or body in winning success in life.” Fortunately, we have coaches and student-athletes, whose discipline, deter-mination, and dedication to learning both on and off the football field have led to the pursuit of excellence with integrity, honor, and pride. Visitors, convinced our secret to success is that we have a Safeco-type stadium, filled with top-of-the-line equipment and recruiters at the ready, arrive on campus and question with disbelief, “This is your stadium? Are you sure you‟re a 4A school?” Being just a tad com-petitive myself, I quietly chuckle, remind them that they rightfully should be daunted by our formidable record, and respond that the Sky-line Spartan tradition is rooted in our people: the coaches who not only know the game of football but know how to coach students, in our students who are diligent and resilient, and also in our supportive community who volunteer innumerable hours, contribute donations through Gridiron, Booster Club, and PTSA, campaign and advocate for bond and levies, follow on Twitter, and gather on Friday nights as a community. Regardless of the stadium or who we play, it is our community that is the winning tradition at Skyline. WE are SPARTA!

For the countless hours of making sure that each year the memories of the season are captured in photos.
Hundreds of photos are taken at each game and are available for purchase, with a portion coming back to help fund the program. These are great for memory books or gifts.

Shown are over 475 varsity players, beginning with our inaugural season in 1997 and through 2010. Their hard work, dedication and skills helped during each of the previous 14 seasons of play that set the
attitude, work ethic and tradition that is now an integral part of the program. Thank you, alumni Spartans….we wouldn’t be where we are today without you! 44

FOR PROTECTING THE TRADITION
2011 15th ANNIVERSARY SEASON 57
The Skyline Youth Football Association (SYFA) has a relatively short history, having been founded in 1998.
SYFA competes in the Greater Eastside Junior Football Association which was formed in 1963 with the mission of
providing an organized little league football program for kids ages 8- 14 on the Eastside.
The GEJFA systems today are aligned with the 3A and 4A KingCo High Schools- which consistently field the
most competitive teams in all of Washington High School sports. GEJFA mission is very simple- Have fun first and
worry about winning second! Success has been measured by the number of players in the system, and in turn the
number of those players that return to play again and go on to compete for their High School.
By these measure, SYFA has excelled as a program! For five straight years, SYFA has led the 16 system league in
both the number of kids participating and the total number of teams. Equally as important, the number of players that
turn out as freshman for the High School program has been among the top for any of the KingCo Schools. Since his
arrival as Head Coach, Mat Taylor has worked to make the youth program a true feeder program for the high
school. Many of the current and past Varsity players have come up through the SYFA system and consider
themselves part of the Spartan family from the first time they put on the pads, until they graduate from Skyline High
School. As a board and system, we are very proud of this tradition and the results we have all enjoyed!

One of the great activities in summer is the Future Champs Football Camp, hosted by Coach Mat Taylor. High school
players and coaches teach fundamentals to participating Sammamish youth players… and they just hang out and have fun
as part of our football family. And once in awhile, a special guest comes and talks to the participants. And it makes it
really special when that guest was once a camper too!
