After spending a long winter inside, you get a good look at your home and start imagining what would make it better, more comfortable, more energy efficient. Stop dreaming and start planning! The largest home show in Central PA is right in your own backyard – March 11 through 13, at the Bryce Jordan Center on Penn State’s University Park campus.

“You may be just coming to the Home Show to look for one project,” said Don Gilmore, Gilmore Construction, and chairman of the Home Show committee, “but take time to look at the other exhibits, too. Check out everyone and all the possibilities – decks, windows, kitchens – there’s more out there than you may have imagined.”

More than 100 unique exhibitors fill the Concourse and the Arena, featuring home theatres to geothermal systems, aquascaping to siding, custom builders to mortgage lenders, remodelers to window coverings.

“We’ll feature Mark Zerbe, our mortgage originator,” said Mindy Dillon, Bellefonte branch manager of Fulton Bank. “Visitors will learn about what sets us apart from the others, like our ‘professional employee mortgage.’ This product is designed for a professional with an advanced degree – Masters, PhD, etc. It allows Fulton Mortgage Company to provide up to 100 percent financing on a home purchase for folks who hold an advanced degree – giving us greater flexibility in helping them find and afford the home of their dreams.”

Meanwhile, Dan Wise of Wise Construction will be showing “the new modern designs of Lindal Cedar Homes, photos of remodeling work, a phantom screen system, and a sprinker system.” Dan continued, “We like being a member and going to the show. We get people looking for projects – serious buyers, even in tough budget times. It’s a real good way to get prospects.”

Hosted each year by the Builders Association of Central PA, the Home Show is the place for homeowners, or owners-to-be, to get ideas for their dream homes. The Association is a not-for-profit trade association which holds builders and remodelers to high standards of quality and customer service. Nearly 90 percent of the exhibitors in the show are members.

There are great learning opportunities, too. Free hour-long workshops take place each day, many with “green” themes, such as geothermal heating and cooling and a rain-water harvesting system. Look for suppliers of earth-friendly solutions marked with a leaf in the exhibitor lists.

In addition, kids can get involved at the Home Show through the 7th Annual Children’s Building Contest, which challenges “future home builders” to create a dream home from Legos or Lincoln Logs, depending on their age. Pre-registration is required, so sign up online at www.centralpabuilders.com. Space is limited to 40 contestants in each category. Prizes will be awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in each category, plus goodie bags and T-shirts for all who enter. The Children’s Building Contest will be taking place this year on the Concourse level of the Bryce Jordan Center so all the Home Show visitors will get a peek as the creative energy flows!

The action isn’t all indoors, however. As you enter Gate B, check out the deck-building contest along the sidewalk. Three contestants are building a deck from start to finish Friday and Saturday. You can watch the progress and vote for your favorite.

Pennwood Corporation prefers the outdoors, too. They’ll have a big tent near the entrance so they can demonstrate their stoves and fireplaces, and even their grill. The tent will be nice and warm, and there may be a few barbecue goodies to sample.

Sponsors of this event include Triangle Building Supply, Marvin Windows and Doors, SPE Federal

Credit Union, and Allegheny Power. Quality Roofing Supply sponsored the kick-off event for exhibitors, Peak Media of PA – Fox 8 / ABC 23 sponsored the grand prize, and CDT Family Pages sponsored the Children’s Building Contest, along with New Vibrations Audio & Video. Fairway Building Products and Kohl Building Products sponsored the deck-building contest and provided the materials, which will all be donated to Habitat for Humanity’s ReStore after the Show. Stott Publications is proud to be the official Home Show publisher for this guide. Stott Publications also publishes The Centre County Gazette and Central PA Auto Connection, both free at local newsstands.

“SPE is proud to sponsor the 2011 Builders Association Home Show. As a community financial institution, it’s about helping the local builders and merchants grow and prosper by serving homeowners and businesses in Centre County,” said Sue Swain, executive/marketing assistant, SPE Federal Credit Union. “Sponsoring the Home Show is also a great way to let everyone, including small businesses, know that they can enjoy the benefits of better, low-cost banking at a credit union.”

Two reminders for 2011: the entrance has changed from the Mezzanine to Gate B and there are now two-

day adult tickets ($10) in addition to one-day passes ($6). Save on a two-day ticket and come back again! Either way, you’ll have one chance to enter the drawings for door prizes and the grand prize, a big-screen HD TV. Your entry stub will be attached to your ticket, and should be filled out and dropped off at the Builders Association booth near the Gate B entrance.

“This is a great showcase for vendors to see a lot of people,” said Fulton Bank’s Dillon. “And visitors, seriously – if you have a need, you’ll find somebody here!”

There are so many wonderful things to see and learn about at the Central PA Home Show, you may want to visit twice! New in 2011, in addition to the $6 admission, you could opt for a $10 two-day pass.

“A lot of people want to attend more than one seminar or have a number of things they want to see,” said Jeff Bolze, committee member and vice president of Pennwood Corporation. “You can pay just once and come back again with the new two-day ticket.”

Tickets are on sale during the show at the ticket booth at Gate B – the new entrance to the Home Show. Children age 12 and under are still admitted free, and there’s free parking courtesy of the Builders Association.

Starting on March 7th, tickets can be purchased in advance at the Builders Association office between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday at 2038 Sandy Drive, Suite 100, State College, off Science Park Road.

You’ll not only get a lot of good ideas at the Home Show, you’ll come home better informed! There are many new technologies and techniques in home products these days, and the Home Show always features local experts on a broad range of topics. Workshops are free to those with a Home Show admission ticket. Each seminar lasts about an hour and will be held in the Founders Lounge on the Mezzanine level of the BJC. That’s the area between the Arena Floor (lower level) and the Concourse (upper level).

All the seminar presenters are exhibitors at the show, so if you have questions or would like more information, you can follow-up with the presenters at their booths after the workshops. Presenters are also all members of the Association, so you can be enssured of high standards of quality in their work and products. In the goodie-bag you receive as you enter the Home Show, you’ll find a Membership Directory for the Builders Association. Refer to this guide to help you in all your home improvement needs!

For those who have enjoyed the Home Show in years past, there are a few changes for you to be aware of as you arrive at the Bryce Jordan Center.

Parking is free, as always, courtesy of your Builders Association. You’ll be parking in the PSU Stadium West Lot, between Beaver Stadium and University Drive. Just as you would for a concert or basketball game, you can then walk from Stadium West across Curtin Road to Gate B of the BJC.

You’ll be entering at Gate B, rather than the Mezzanine Level, and can buy your tickets at that ticket booth. You’ll find the Association information booth directly inside that entrance, so be sure to stop there and enter to win the Grand Prize (courtesy of Fox 8 and ABC 23), as well as one of the daily door prizes.

The only activities happening this year on the Mezzanine Level will be the seminars – see page 7 for more information! Also new this year, as you are traveling around the Concourse, you will notice the work of some “future home builders,” in the form of Lego or Lincoln Log Dream Homes!

You’ll see the parking and entrance noted on the map on page 24 .

The Builders Association of Central Pennsylvania was established in 1957 to serve, support, and advocate for homeowners. The Association also works hard to support local home owners. The Association holds members to a Contractor Quality Commitment Program and each member signs a Code of Ethics policy. By doing business with a Builders Association member, you become involved in a network of professionals who will work to make sure your job is done right.

Applicants to the Builders

Association must submit proof of insurance along with financial and professional references. Each applicant is reviewed by existing members of the Association to ensure that the highest standards of the industry are met. Members of the Builders Association receive continuing education to stay up-to-date on the latest technology, regulations, and legislation.

In addition, the Builders Association supports local trade education programs at The Central Pennsylvania Institute of Science and Technology, at State High, at Penn

College, and at Penn State. By choosing a member of the Builders Association to complete your project, you have the added support of the Association as well as all the community projects that the members undertake.

If you’d like the confidence gained by working with a member of the Builders Association of Central Pennsylvania, ask for a copy of the annual membership directory or visit www.centralpbabuilders.com. There, you can search for a professional by their name or service category.

How the Builders Association Serves You

The Builders Association of Central PA is Centre County’s foremost residential building trade organization. Since its inception in 1957, the BACP has championed the building-industry by providing education and networking opportunities and by working to influence state and local government to ensure the continuation of quality construction in the Centre Region. In addition, the BACP works to raise consumer awareness around issues that affect their rights.

Involved locally with Habitat for Humanity and the Centre County Affordable Housing Coalition, the BACP seeks to play an active role in improving the community. Here’s what happened in 2010!

▪ The 2010 Bricks & Sticks Golf Classic hosted more than 200 golfers and raised more than $58,000 to benefit the Association and Habitat for Humanity.

▪ The 2010 Parade of Homes ticket proceeds all went to support scholarships for students who are engaged in trade education in Centre County.

▪ In October, the Builders Association held its 16th Annual Raffle, which benefits the Pennsylvania Committee for Affordable Housing.

The Association is starting 2011 off in a big way, donating all of the materials used in the Deck Building Contest at the Home Show to Habitat for Humanity’s ReStore.

Now in its 54th year of serving central Pennsylvania home builders and homeowners, the Builders Association has more than 250 members – builders, remodelers, landscapers, bankers, retailers, lawyers, suppliers, real estate agents, and many more dedicated professionals – all committed to earning your trust when you build, buy, finance, renovate, landscape, or furnish your home. Check out the information below to learn more about what the Builders Association can do for you!

The Central Pennsylvania Home Show is the Builders Associations’ largest event and is now in its 27th year. The efforts of the small Builders Association staff could never pull together such an event, the largest Home Show in our region. As with most not-for-profit organizations, the Builders Association of Central PA relies on the support of its members and the efforts of its volunteers. Turn to page 13 to see just a few of the many people who make events like the Home Show possible.

“I’ve been exhibiting at the show for at least 21 years, and I’ve been the chairman for 15 – as long as we’ve been in the BJC,” said Don Gilmore.

Putting on the largest home show in Central Pennsylvania takes hundreds of man hours. The Builders Association of Central PA only has a staff of three, Abbie Jensen, Executive Officer; Cori Donaghy, Special Events Coordinator; and Kristine Lang McDonald, Administrative Assistant. Their efforts alone could never produce an event on this scale, and as with most not-for-profits, they rely totally on the support of members and volunteers.

The 2011 Home Show Committee includes these Association members:

Don Gilmore, Gilmore Construction - ChairmanJeff Bolze, Pennwood Home and HearthMindy Dillon, Fulton BankAnn Guss, Kish BankCJ Henry, Green Horizon LandscapeLinda Hershey, Pro-Forma LLC PromosAndy Orr, Cisney & O’DonnellMike Scott, SPE Federal Credit Union Devon Warner, Traditions of America

In addition to the committee, the Builders Association puts approximately 50 volunteers to work at various tasks throughout the weekend – ticket sales, greeters, manning the information booth, directing visitors throughout the BJC, and assisting with exhibitor move- in and move-out.

The committee made a few changes this year, including changing the entrance to Gate B, rather than the Mezzanine level, moving the Association information booth near the new entrance, and adding a transecting aisle in the Arena to improve the flow of visitors. Also new this year, the participants in the Children’s Building Contest will do their creating on the Concourse level, where Home Show visitors will get a chance to see these “future home builders” at work.

Don Gilmore of Gilmore Construction has been the Home Show committee chairman for 15 years,

as long as it’s been held at the Bryce Jordan Center. He’s also always been a driving force behind the

Children’s Building Contest, shown here with some “Future Home Builders” from the 2010 show.

Merely having a booth in the Home Show does not guarantee success for the vendors. More than 100 unique companies will be competing for your attention at this year’s show, trying to come up with the best way to entice you to stop at their booth. There will be colorful banners, hands-on demos, videos, photo examples, and plenty of helpful, smiling experts. Each year, a panel of community members and building industry experts judge the booths at the Home Show, spurring on a healthy competition among the exhibitors.

One company who has a good record of winning Home Show awards is Scott’s Landscaping, Inc. They always create a living garden for the display, showing off the newest varieties of perennials and ideas for landscaping. No wonder they won Best of Show in 2010!

Be sure to check out Scott’s Landscaping on the Arena Floor, aisle G. For Lynne Heritage of Heritage Innovations, the Home Show has been a “must” for attracting customers for more than a decade. “With my shop-at-home service, the Home Show functions as our showroom where customers can see many of the custom window and closet products firsthand and learn about the services we provide. Then they are more comfortable inviting us into their home,” she said. She was able to use the existing Bryce

Jordan Center windows to showcase her window coverings, winning Best 10x10 Display: Concourse. Stop by and see her display this year in space Q on the Concourse. New Vibrations, which won the Best 10x20 Display: Arena in 2010, built a movie theatre with custom audio

and video inside and a bell tower on top – reminding visitors of the company’s bell tower installation and restoration services. Owner Brian Michaels explained that “This year, we’re going to show people how it’s done – we’ll have wiring, partial walls, you can see how it’s installed.” You can get a peek at what your new home entertainment system could look like if you visit New Vibrations’ booth at Arena W34 and 35. As you are touring the Home Show this year, be sure to stop by the booths of the winners from last year and keep your eyes peeled for signage indicating the winners of the 2011 Home Show Booth Awards!

If you choose the right contractor, remodeler, or supplier, you can make sure your new house or improvements to your existing home will make less of an impact on the planet – and your wallet. There is a National Green Building Standard that can be followed which will help you achieve both goals. According to Brennan Glantz, PE, of Bosak Construction and Chairperson of the Association’s Green Building Committee, by following these higher green code standards, your new home can be “healthier, cleaner, quieter, and longer lasting, and you’ll get more energy efficiency as an end result.”

These greener designs and methods don’t have to cost more, though some of the materials and equipment may have a higher up-front cost. The energy savings and peace of mind will be worth the investment in the National Green Building Standard. “It’s all inspected by an independent third party,” Glantz said. “Checked, scored, and rated so you know it’s done right.” Like Bosak Construction, Dan Wise of Wise Construction is a builder who offers the National Green Building Standards. In addition, he’s one of those third-party verifiers on homes that others have constructed.

Goodco Mechanical, Inc., another Home Show exhibitor and BACP Member, has been in business for three years and at the Show for two. Owner Scott Good offers geothermal heating and cooling systems. He’ll have a video and information on a ductless, mini split heat pump, for example, that can use the earth’s energy to help heat and cool your home.

How about capturing and re-using rainwater? Dave Zeigler of Black Hawk Homestead Nursery recommends it. “Capturing and reusing rainwater makes sense. It can

reduce water bills including city storm sewer charges and it can reduce demand on municipal systems. It can also help you avoid strict watering time restrictions; and rainwater is better for your landscape than municipally treated water. It’s extremely rich in nutrients. Using rainwater to irrigate will reduce fertilizer use; no chemicals have been added to rainwater,” he continued. “You can use rainwater for irrigation, washing your car, patio or deck; topping off water features, swimming pools, and hot tubs; to protect your property from fires and to supplement toilet and laundry water supply.” In addition to ponds, fountains, and garden accents, Black Hawk Homestead Nursery will be showing a rainwater harvesting system at their booth and will also offer a free workshop on the subject.

These are just a few of the ecologically sound products you’ll find at the Home Show. Ask Home Show exhibitors what green materials or equipment they recommend. Be sure to refer to the list of exhibitors on pages 23, 25, and 26 and look for the leaf next to the exhibitor’s name – this indicates a Green Service Provider!

This year, the Children’s Building Contest will be held on the Concourse so everyone can admire the amazing creativity of these “future home builders.” Through this kind of event, kids gain a small understanding of the building process; many arrive with a plan and pull on their design skills, engineering skills, and of course, their creativity.

The Builders Association is involved in fostering trade education at many levels, whether through fun kids’ contests like this one, or through supporting local scholarships for high school and college students

– at Central PA Institute of Science and Technology, State College High’s Career Technology program, and at Penn State Again sponsored by the CDT Family Pages, the Children’s Building contest is free to enter and limited to just 40 children for each session.

This year marks the second anniversary of the Builders Association of Central PA’s Deck Building Expo: a competition to see which contractor’s deck will be the favorite. This year’s Deck Building Contest will take place along the walkway leading up to the show’s new entrance, Gate B, off Curtin Road. You’re encouraged to stop and watch the progress on your way in and out – and to vote for your favorite deck.

The idea for the contest came from Don Gilmore, long-time chairman of the Central PA Home Show. “I saw something like this at the 2009 Remodelers Show in Baltimore,” Gilmore said. “It was fascinating to watch. The action really energized show visitors.” After returning from the Remodeling Show, the Builders Association of Central PA harnessed Don’s energy, and adapted the idea to work in conjunction with their Home Show.

“Ultimately, we hope that the action of building outside the Bryce Jordan Center will encourage more people to check out what’s going on inside the show.”

Contestants will each have 20 hours to complete a 16 x 20 foot deck, while working outside in a 20 x 30 foot area. Building begins at 8 a.m. on Friday, March 11 and needs to be completed by 4 p.m. on Saturday, March 12. Crews will work rain or shine to get their projects done.

In 2010, the weather over the Home Show weekend was less than optimal for working outside. “Last year, there was a downpour, more like a flood really, but we just kept on building” said Dylan Wadlington of Wadlington Remodeling, one of the last year’s contestants. This type of “extreme building” helps visitors to get a sense of what contractors have to deal with on a regular basis to get projects completed on time.

Last year’s winner was a team of Bill Weaver’s carpentry students from the Central PA Institute of Science and Technology (CPI) and they’re coming back this year to defend their title against Gilmore Construction and Vinyl King. Their winning deck was a split-level deck that utilized composite decking and pressure-treated wood, and was embellished with landscaping and lighting elements. The students were excited to won such an honorwhile competing against professional builders.

The materials used in the competition are provided by the Deck Building Contest sponsors, Fairway Building

Products and Kohl Building Products. The teams will be supplied with all the decking and framing materials they need. Best of all, none of these materials will go to waste. At the end of the show, all materials will be donated to Habitat for Humanity of Greater Centre County and will be available for purchase at their ReStore!

“The members of the Association have a great working relationship with our local Habitat. We are excited to be able to offer them the material for their ReStore. Having such great items available for the public in the store boosts their opportunities to raise money for their various housing projects,” said Cori Donaghy, association Special Events Coordinator.

Ballot boxes will be available for visitors to vote for their favorite decks during Home Show weekend so be sure to pay close attention to the decks as you enter at Gate B. Additional information about the 2011 Deck Building Contest and its participants will be posted on the Builders Association’s Web Site www.centralpabuilders.com.

Last year the State College Area School District implemented a community-based Residential Housing, Building, and Green Engineering Program at the Career and Technical Center of the high school. Under a new instructor, Christopher Warren, the Building Construction Technology program saw a complete renovation of curriculum, expectations, projects, and connections. As the program heads into the next decade, it is vital to integrate alternative energy, green-building practices, and community-based learning into the curriculum as we develop future builders/contractors in the newest techniques of construction. The Builders Association is proud to support the work of Mr. Warren and all of his students. The following article was submitted by the SCASD Career Technology Education program.

To our great community of supporters of Career Technology Education, we want to thank you for your support, interest, and attention to the success we have accomplished for our students over the past year.

The Level 1 students learn the basic skills of masonry and framing while building parking lots, retaining walls, beautification entrance upgrades to the North Building, and “Eco-Sheds” that implement solar power and rain water collection. The key to basic instruction is to connect it to “reality” – what the students will encounter outside the comfort zone of school.

The Level 2 students advance their learning by applying green building techniques and Eco-friendly technology as they construct a 16’ x 24’ Eco-Cabin. The Eco-Cabin is an actual building the program will sell in the spring. It integrates energy-efficient framing, insulation, HVAC, recycled flooring, trim, and finishes.

The Level 3 students continue the Eco-Cabin construction and advance their learning by being certified in numerous trade qualification programs in safety, plumbing, electric, siding, roofing, and alternative energy.

A new class was added this year for seniors who wish to continue in the field and show excellence in academics, a Teachers Assistant program. The TA program is available along side the senior co-op program where students can go out in the afternoons and work for actual builders and contractors. The TA class brings that advanced senior into the Level 1 class to work with the beginning students assisting them with lessons and hands-on shop exercises.

Essential Skills Our Building Construction Program is one of the

most complete and advanced in projects, curriculum, and community-based learning. As vitally important as having the general building knowledge is having the essential traits of respect and integrity.

A 60/40 model is emphasized – 60 percent is the student’s knowledge of building construction content and 40 percent is their delivery or presentation of that knowledge. Twenty-first century educational skills are essential in today’s professional world. Students need to be honest and trustworthy, have good oral and written presentation skills, and superior interpersonal communication skills.

Every contractor needs to be trusted at someone’s home or worksite. That is not something that is learned from a book, it is learned from the instructors, teachers, employers, and professionals who are a positive influence in the students’ lives.

The new Building Construction Technology program is just the latest example of SCASD’s continuous investment in and commitment to state-of-the-art technical and professional education and career development. To learn more about the program, Google “scasd building construction program.”
