AboveVoice from Greetings,

On May 30, 55 seniors received their diplomas

from St. Joseph Central Catholic. This was truly an

outstanding class. As a group, they were offered more

than $1.4 million in scholarships. I want to thank each

of them for all that they have done for SJCC and may

God bless the Class of 2010.

Once again this year our sophomores did a

great job on the Ohio Graduation Tests. Our scores

were among the best in Ohio. Congratulations to

the students, their elementary teachers, and the

teachers here at SJCC.

I want to also congratulate Brant Reardon and Jes-

sica Molyet for their accomplishments at the State Track Meet. Brant

was the State Champion in the high jump and Jessica fi nished third in the

shot put. In all we had seven athletes participating in Columbus.

SJCC won the Midland Athletic League All Sports Award. Points

are accumulated depending on where you fi nished in the league. After

the winter, we were in seventh place. With the success of our spring

sports, we vaulted into fi rst. Congratulations to all of our athletes who

participated in sports this past year.

At this time, I have to say good by to three very dedicated teach-

ers. Todd Drusback, Lou Kuhlman, and Fr. Ron Brickner will be leaving

SJCC. All three of them contributed so much to our school and will be

very much missed.

Once again, I want to thank all of you for your generosity. Your

prayers, volunteer hours, your input and your fi nancial gifts are so very

much appreciated. SJCC wouldn’t be the school that it is, if it weren’t for

the support of its alumni and friends. May God bless each of you and your

families. Have a fun and safe summer.

GO STREAKS!

Students earning the highest subject averages were Darr (Art), Christopher Liebold (Music), Fatica (English and Social Studies), Burns (Spanish, Math, Science, and Social Studies).

The Bishop’s Cross awards went to Darr and Liebold. Other awards handed out included the Ethel Smith Out-standing Female Athlete Award to Jessica Molyet, the Robert Smith Outstanding Male Athlete Award to Garrett Walker, the Alumni and Friends Award to Schiets, the Thomas H. Rimelspach Memorial Award to C.J. Holland,

This is a testimony to the hard work of the class, the sacrifi ce of their parents and a tribute to Catholic School Educators from the grade schools and SJCC.

Congratulations! Have a safe and wonderful summer, may God continue to bless you.

Success at State!

Junior Brant Reardon became the third Crimson Streak to win a State Title in track and fi eld! Brant cleared 6’-7” to take fi rst place in the high jump at the State Track meet at Ohio State’s Jesse Owens Memo-rial Stadium.

Senior Jessica Molyet also made the podi-um with a third place fi nish in the shot put. Jessica completed a very successful season with a throw of 41 feet, 6 1/4 inches.

Winning the MAL All-Sports trophy capped an extremely successful spring sports season. In addition to the success of the track and fi eld athletes, the baseball, softball, and tennis teams didn’t disappoint their fans. Both the boys and girls track teams experienced high participation, and many school records were broken throughout the season. Senior Jessica Molyet continued her success in the fi eld events setting the school mark in both shot and discus. Jessica was the MAL cham-pion in both events and fi nished third in the State in the shot put. Sprinters Kelsey Burkin, Maddi Filliater, Whitney Drown, and Lindsay Weickert also shined throughout the season and earned a trip to the State Meet. A First Place State fi nish in the high jump for junior Brant Reardon highlighted the boys’ season. Joining Reardon at State was junior Isaac Bowling, an eleventh place fi nisher in the discus. Runners Sean Brawley, Zak Bowman, Matt Wickline, Nate Long, Matt Me-halko, Alex Burns, and David Wasson improved tremendously throughout the season and earned many fi rst place fi nishes. The varsity boys baseball squad were led by seniors Garrett Walker, Adam Snider, Alex Macielewicz, Jeff Mapus, and John Fatica. The team fi nished the season with a 19-7 mark. The boys were Sectional champions, and Walker, along with junior Aaron Swint, were named First Team MAL. The varsity girls softball team fi nished the season strong, compiling a 15-9 record. Strong pitching from junior Sonya Kwiatkowski highlighted a solid defense throughout the season and earned her First Team MAL honors. A strong group of underclassmen will return next season, but seniors Jessica Long and Samantha Heishman will be missed. Boys tennis was led by senior Paul Blohm who was an aggressive fi rst singles player. Many new players joined the 2010 season. Finishing their tennis careers were seniors Blohm, Sam Hossler, Jordan Foos, and Scott Lamson.

The word “nun” is many times associated with a typical stereotype. One might view the life of a nun to be reclusive, highly disciplined, and boring. I had the pleasure of learning that the life of a nun is quite the opposite. Sr. Anne Mary Molyet does not fi t this stereotype; her vocation as a Sister of Notre Dame is rewarding and dynamic. Recently, I spoke with Sr. Anne Mary Molyet, class of 1974, and I learned about her perspective on this fulfi lling vocation. As a student at SJCC, the Sisters of Notre Dame taught her. Attracted to their community living and spirit of faith, Sr. Anne’s interest in the religious life was sparked. During her senior year at Walsh University, she began thinking about her plans for the future. Her attraction to the reli-gious life still drew her in, so she had a big decision to make. She questioned, “Should I embark on the nine year journey of formation into the religious life? What if I want to get married?” Thinking very logically, she decided to begin the formation process to determine whether God was calling her to this vocation in life. After all, she was free to leave the pro-cess at any time and get married—it didn’t work the other way around! Needless to say, she knew very soon that she made the right decision. Her vocation has provided her with countless opportunities to serve God and her community. From 2003-2009, Sr. Anne served as the Provincial Superior of the SND, Toledo Province. Her responsibilities includ-ed leading 225 sisters to discern where God is calling them to carry out a very important aspect of the SND mission: nurturing faith through education. As Jesus missioned the disciples to go out and spread the good news, Sister missioned other sisters to disperse around the world to do God’s work. Currently, Sr. Anne is on sabbatical in India. She is undergoing the Atmadarshan Experience, a program of integration of the body, mind, and spirit, according to the Eastern tradition. During her time in India, Sister hopes to learn how to clear her mind, become more focused, and live with more awareness. She also hopes to share the Atmadarshan Experience with others. Sister is not only an interesting person, but she is a great inspiration. I wish to share the following interview.Q. What role do religious women play in our world today?A. The role of this vocation is to do God’s work and empower others to do the same. Religious women have the capacity to re-spond to this kind of call because they are free to pack up, leave, and go where the need is greatest. This is the beauty of giving your life to Jesus through the religious life. Q. What has been your most rewarding missionary experience?A. During my Provincial Superior term in Toledo, I was part of a missionary team that brought Sunday Scriptures and Com-munion to the inmates of the Toledo City Jail. Our purpose was to offer a non-judgmental presence to assure them that they are still loved by God, despite their past. Two things really touched me. The fi rst was the discovery that these inmates do not see the light of day for the extent of their term. There is a tunnel that leads to the courthouse! The second was the realization that there is no human touch in jail. After praying the Our Father, one man told me I made his day because he hadn’t felt the human touch of a hand in so long! Overall, these inmates were the most humble and sincere people to whom I ministered.Q. Where have you traveled through your vocation?A. I have been to Brazil, India, across the US, and Papua New Guinea fi ve times.Q. What is your favorite part of the religious life?A. I really treasure the opportunities to satisfy the spiritual hungers of our world. People are hungry for something that has a deeper meaning in life and are always looking for purpose. I enjoy steering them in the right direction towards a more satisfying and happier way of life. Q. What would you like young people to know about the religious life? A. I encourage young people to give a church vocation consideration. Serving God and his people is such a rewarding and satis-fying way of life.

gious life still drew her in, so she had a big decision to make. She questioned, “Should I embark on the nine

A Tr ibu t e t o Fr. John Brenne n ‘83 4/16/1965 - 2/11/2010By: Kelli Brennen (2011), niece of Fr. John Fr. John Brennen was not only a compassionate, caring priest, but he was much more than that. He was a man with a great spirit, and he loved to make people laugh. Fr. John was ordained in 2000 and began his priesthood at Sandusky St. Mary’s. He was later transferred to Mansfi eld St. Pete’s. He spent his fi nal years in Galion at St. Joseph’s. Throughout his priesthood, Fr. John was very involved with the students at his parishes. He loved to work with them and enjoyed the time he spent with them. Fr. John truly loved to support his students in their activities. He was known for wearing crazy hats at sporting events, which was his “trademark.” Fr. John was a great person who connected not only with the students but also with the parishioners. He left a mark on everyone he met. Through all his pain, he maintained high spirits, and he never complained. Although Fr. John Brennen left us early at the age of 45, he will be forever remembered by those who knew him.

This year’s annual SJCC Art & Music Show included ceramics, paintings, draw-ings, graphic designs, collages, sewing, mixed media, and of course, great music! Every art student submitted at least two pieces of their art work, and senior portfolio stu-dents set up a display of their year’s work. Area judges decided on fi rst, second, and third place in several categories with the top honor being “Best of Show”. Guests of the show voted on the “Peoples’ Choice” award. Christian Rodriguez claimed this year’s “Best of Show”. One of his paintings was accepted into the highly competi-tive Northwest Ohio Focus Show. The SJCC Art Club also fused glass jew-elry and created hand-crafted ceramic leaf plates that were sold at the show. The money earned provided a $200.00 art scholarship for a senior entering an art related fi eld. Art instructor, Mrs. Amy Rospert and band director, Mr. Bill Burkett put a lot of energy into the preparation of the show. Mrs. Rospert refl ects, “It was a lot of hard work, but it is amaz-ing to see how talented our students are!”
