2 TAIPEI CYCLE SHOW PREVIEW

Taipei show mirrors the history of Taiwan’s and is a hub of trends and fashion

Since it was first launched in 1988, Taipei CYCLE (the Taipei International Cycle Show)

has faithfully mirrored the history of transitions taking place in the bicycle industry in Taiwan.

Both the scale of the show and the content of the exhibits have grown and changed

in step with global economic trends, fluctuations in raw materials and

exchange rates, and climatic and terrestrial changes that have

occurred. Because of this, the history of Taipei CYCLE

literally parallels the growth o f T a i w a n ' s b i c y c l e

industry and the fierce struggles fought by the sector. What is especially i m p o r t a n t i s t h e change in the way the show is viewed by the global bicycle industr y. The path o f a d d e d v a l u e e m p h a s i z i n g I B D r o u t e s t h a t t h e Taiwanese industry has chosen to follow since the beginning

of the 21st century h a s t a k e n h o l d , a n d

as a result, the show is now seen as a generator

of trends and fashion. Below, we trace through the

changes that have taken place in the bicycle

industry in Taiwan to reveal its growth

and development. W h e n t h e f i r s t

T a i p e i C Y C L E t o o k place in 1988, the world

was already beginning to see Taiwan as a vital entity in bicycle

exports, and as a result , the T A I T R A ( T a i w a n E x t e r n a l T r a d e Development Council) split o f f w h a t h a d formerly been the Bicycle Zone at the Taiwan Sporting Goods Show, to create a full-fl edged show titled the Taipei CYCLE (the Taipei Int’l Bicycle Show) that initially ran in conjunction with the Motorbikes Show. The show exceeded the sponsors’ expectations in number of exhibitors and attendees to inspire them to further expand it in the following years.

Establishment of A-Team and “1110 Delivery Standard” 1110proposed in 2002

Starting from the fourth Taipei CYCLE, held in 1991, a “Best Innovation Competition” has been held for bicycles, parts and accessories. The competition spurs fi erce rivalry among companies in Taiwan to produce improved versions of folding bikes, carbon bicycles, lightweight electric bikes, high-performance parts and accessories and other items which they have developed in-house. Since the start oversea buyers have followed the competition with intense interest. In 1994, the seventh year of the show, feature

performances were held in front of the main gateway to the Taipei

International Conference Center and in the Fountain

P l a z a o f t h e T a i p e i World Trade Center. Th ousands have viewed these quality shows presented by national t e a m s f r o m a c r o s s Taiwan.

bicycle industry

At the ninth show, in 1996, an International Bicycle Design Competition was held. Taiwan to mark the nation’s first direct presidential election conducted in the same year . And even though military pressure was applied by China, the number of exhibitors grew by 10%. Because of the political situation, however, the number of overseas buyers dropped to 2,200, a plug of 37% on the previous year. . In 2001, the 14th year of the show, construction of the No. 2 Hall of t h e T a i p e i W o r l d T r a d e C e n t e r h a d b e e n c o m p l e t e d and the scale of the show increased to make this the largest c y c l e s h o w i n A s i a . The slogan of the 15th show, held in 2002, was “The 3N Movement” (Pursuing N e w M a t e r i a l s , N e w F u n c t i o n s , New Applications). Also in that year, Giant and Merida proposed the formation of the A-Team and the “1110 Delivery Standard”. The A-Team was officially launched at the 16th show, in 2003. However, because of the SARS outbreak that year, attendance was down 20% and all exhibitors and attendees wore masks.

The challenge in 2008: Breaking away from OEM and promoting ODM

In 2004, the 17th year of the show, a special zone was created for exhibiting electric bikes, and a forum relating to electric bikes was held. The 18th show, in 2005, was jointly held for the first time with the Taipei International Elimination Road Race sponsored by the Chinese Taipei Cycling Association (CTCA). The 19th show, in 2006, was held jointly with the Tour de Taiwan. The

21st show, in 2008, also m a r k e d t h e o p e n i n g show for the new Taipei World Trade Center NANGANG Exhibition Hall, and these double openings were jointly celebrated. With Giant,

Merida and other companies enjoying record performance figures that year, the industry as a whole took up the new challenge of breaking away from OEM and moving towards ODM, and that

effort was clearly apparent at the booths at the show. In that year the industry also faced a

sharp escalation in material prices. The 22nd show, in 2009, was held amidst the global recession triggered by the financial crisis in the US, but the show set a new record in terms of scale, with 762 exhibitors, 2,888 booths and

4,786 buyers from overseas. But overall, Taiwanese industry managed to ride out

the period fairly unscathed. The 23rd Taipei CYCLE will undoubtedly define the coming

trends, styles, and prospects of the future.

4 TAIPEI CYCLE SHOW PREVIEW

Taiwan’s bicycle industry really kicked off in the 1970s, as a base for knockdown parts for the bicycle industry in the US. Being able to supply products in large volumes for mass merchandising routes requires a certain level of technology, as well as an

ample supply of cheap labor. At the time, the bicycle industry in Taiwan was undergoing a meteoric rise and was able to meet those conditions and provide the requisite qualifications. Actually, many of the manufacturers that currently represent the Taiwan sector were founded in the 1970s and 1980s. Hsin Lung led the lineup with its establishment in 1971, and they were followed in rapid succession by Giant, Merida, Dahon, Pacific Cycles, Joy, Kun Teng, Kalloy, Kenda, Hwa Fong Rubber, Cheng Shin Rubber, Cionlli, Dodsun, Ideal, Yuh Jiun, KMC, Sun Race, Viscount, Fairly and many others. As the US market grew, the industry in Taiwan kept pace, mainly through OEM consignments from the US. In 1981, exports of assembled bicycles from Taiwan broke past the 3 million-unit point and in 1983 went on to reach 5.05 million and 7.35 million in 1984. The industry grew at an astonishingly rate that seemingly knew no bounds. The bicycle industry in Taiwan also enjoyed smooth sailing as a result of the explosive growth in mountain bikes and BMX bikes that started primarily in the US. It was not long, however, before that tailwind reversed itself. Burdened by excess supplies, inventory backlogs on the US market soared to one million bikes in 1985, and the market abruptly cooled, with orders that had come pouring in being canceled or put on hold. For Taiwan the slump was felt particularly hard since her exports to the US accounted for 60% of total outgoing shipments.

Companies return to Taiwan to pioneer high added value IBD routes

T he NT$ soared in 1987, spurring the US to abandon its central focus on Taiwan

and place its orders elsewhere. One example was Schwinn’s shift from capital participation in China Bicycle Company (CBC) over to partners in Korea and Hong Kong. As the NT$ continued to appreciate the bicycle industry in Taiwan found itself balancing at the edge of a precipice, belabored by shrinking orders and high costs. To break out of that impasse, Taiwanese makers turned to manufacturing in China. Starting around that time, Taiwanese companies began building bases in across China, and swept onto the PRC like an avalanche. These shifts into the PRC continued into the 1990s. Companies started out by building production bases in the Shenzhen area, and seized on the momentum gained from their success there to branch out into Shanghai and other parts of the eastern region as their became acclimatized to Chinese conditions. The basic pattern for them became one of large-volume production in which makers built modernized plants on vast sites and took advantage of the endless supplies of cheap local labor available to mass-produce products at high profit margins. Manufacturers began expanding their business lineups by employing a dual configuration with bases in both Taiwan and

China, and over the next decade they continued to steadily augment and expand their operations in Shenzhen and Shanghai in what became known as the “15 golden years”. Around 2002 or 2003, however, oversupplies caused by excess production and the startling rise of local Chinese makers began taking some of the wind out of the sails of these Taiwanese makers. In addition to skyrocketing raw material costs and increasing wages, the Chinese government began changing its policies with respect to foreign companies starting from 2004, creating further turbulence. It was around this time that manufacturers began talking about moving their operations back to Taiwan. Rather than simply giving up in the face of fierce competition for lower prices and other hurdles besetting them in the PRC and returning to Taiwan in defeat, makers were going back to proactively take part in the turnaround to high added value aimed at supplying IBD routes that were already well underway.

The formation of the A-Team symbolized the ensuing leap of progress made by

the industry. Established in 2002, the Team was officially unveiled to the world at large at Taipei CYCLE 2003 and served as an advance guard leading the way to higher added value.

At the outset, the A-Team was led by Giant General Manager Tony Lo and comprised 13 companies. Thus, with the A-Team at its center, Taiwan's bicycle industry

began working as a team to build systems for providing advanced functions and

high-level technology. Specifically, the aim was to achieve dramatic improvements and innovations in production engineering and product development systems at the work sites of the various companies, by introducing the Toyota Production System (TPS) to achieve higher levels

Rising unit prices reflect pride and spirit of Taiwan's bicycle industry

of modernization and sophistication. A-Team members worked together on collaborative research and a number of other joint efforts that ultimately produced substantive and far-reaching results. Th e outcome has been a surprising increase in exports to Europe over the past few years. It was 2001 when Europe replaced the US as a major export destination. During the ensuing years, the percentage of total exports going to Europe rose from 53.7% in 2003 to 66.2% in 2005, and finally to 70.1% in 2007, thus comprising a major percentage of outgoing shipments. One reason was that cheaply priced bicycles made in China composed a disproportionately large percentage of exports going to the US. Meanwhile Taiwan companies were pursuing high added value for IBD routes, an effort led by the A-Team, and the process of initiating and establishing that system naturally spurred an increase in exports to the European market, where the preference was for high-grade bicycles.

One proof that the bicycle industry in Taiwan is advancing to higher levels is

a steady rise in the unit price per bicycle. In 2001, the unit price was US$ 111.80, and it has continued to rise ever since, reaching US$ 164.41 in 2004, US$ 200 in 2006, US$ 221.90 in 2007, and US$ 256.83 in 2008. Th e industry has been going through a period of adjustment in 2009, and performance figures for volume were down 16% for January through October compared to the same months last year. Even so, the unit price rose by more than 11%, to US$ 274.15. The steady increase truly reflects the pride and spirit of the bicycle industry in Taiwan, which remains committed to a path of high added quality even amidst global recession. In 2006, 2007 and 2008, the Taiwan industry demonstrated three years of consecutive growth

unlike anything to date, primarily in shipments to Europe. Following those years of expansion, the industry reached a plateau in 2009, when a global downturn sparked a recession. However, Giant Chairman King Liu says that 2010 will defi nitely surpass 2009. If the economy recovers, bicycles could well enjoy stronger growth than ever. And this looks promising given the current emphasis on cleaning up the environment and people's interest in health and leisure activities. Looking at the tests and challenges that the Taiwanese industry has begun setting for itself, one can sense the motivation and the possibilities inherent in the industry as it moves into the world of craftwork in its pursuit of greater heights of success. All this will make Taipei CYCLE 2010 one of the best shows going with the latest and best trends and technology.

Recently, magnesium alloy has been attracting attention and expectations as the cutting-edge material for the bicycle

industry.Top Image International will exhibit complete bikes equipped with the

latest magnesium alloy frames at the Taipei International Cycle Show.Since its foundation the company has been endeavoring to develop and produce mid-range and high-end bicycles while concentrating their efforts toward the research and development of products using magnesium alloy. And they have been rewarded as, after years of research and testing, their latest magnesium alloy frame met with EU EN (European Norm) standards. Therefore, they are presently preparing for mass production of magnesium alloy merchandise. Models equipped with magnesium alloy frames are 33% lighter by volume and considerably stronger than the ones with aluminum alloy frames. In regard to impact absorption capability, magnesium alloy frame models are 50% better than aluminum ones. The enhancement of strength and lightweight achieved with magnesium alloy is a something that aluminum and carbon materials cannot attain.Incidentally, magnesium has exceptional corrosion resistance, cut electromagnetic waves, and is 100% recyclable. It is superior to other materials in terms of saving energy and ecology. In addition to all that, its melting point is lower than aluminum, so it is easier to shape and more suitable for making highly precise components. The company has been focused on these many excellent traits as it strives to develop even better innovative products.

Electrically controlled 7970 Series Dura-Ace

Shimano Inc.

The Taipei International Cycle Show pretty much determines the complete bicycle and product trends of the following year. Needless to say, it is always a very exiting show. And, as is well known, one of those trendsetters is Shimano. At the 2010 show, Shimano will be exhibiting their main products in various categories. They will be centering on their new Dura-Ace and Ultegra models of road bike components. Aimed toward incalescent local users, they plan to set up demonstrations to allow attendants to view scenes of the smoothest gear shifting. The new 7900 Series Dura-Ace was born through the intentional breaking-down of the perfected 7800 Series Dura-Ace and restructuring it into more precise systems. It was done to preserve Shimano's concept that, ‘Dura-Ace must be always be the best.’ Its super precise drive train is an example. Although it may look similar to the previous one, cyclists will feel the clear difference during long-distance and extended rides. High dimensional well-balanced optimum lightness, which sometimes contradicts with strength and stiffness, was rigorously pursued. With 'Trust' as their key word, their new dimensional 7900 Series Dura-Ace models will be the stars of the show. The 7970 Series Dura-Ace is equipped with their highly evaluated innovative electronic shifting system. An electric lever to perform efficiently without stress controls its derailleur. Smooth shifting kicks into run as if it were a part of it were the racer’s body even at the most vigorous moments of races. The Ultegra inherited the design concept of the ST-7900 and a smooth and aggressive road sport model was developed. Its equipped with a crankset which has a hollow outer chainring to realize its lightweight while retaining high stiffness and durability. With its optimal tension of its spring in the front derailleur, and the redesigned inner and outer plates of the chain, a reduced shifting effort is realized. With the adopted carbon brake lever and new improved brake shoes, it is lightweight yet its control and power is enhanced.

As the largest Taiwanese components manufacturer, Hsin Lung Accessories produces handlebars, stems, seat posts, and suspension forks and is renown for its Zoom brand. They have three factories in China in addition to their home base in Taiwan. As the first Taiwanese bicycle company listed on the Shenzhen stock exchange through their Chinese Shenzhen factory, their

every movement is studied. 2007 saw the acquisition of Yicheng, a manufacturer of handlebars and stems. Furthermore, they have purchased a huge site of 220,000 square meters in order to build a new factory in Jinghai County, Tiajin, where they plan to start building a factory from Spring 2010, and begin production in 2011. With the addition of this factory, their production bases will

be expanded a grand total of five sites. Any company with such expansion plans must have an established reputation for producing innovative

products that are in demand. The MTS-AL-476-5 being launched at this time is a high quality stem with a beautiful streamline body. The angle of the stem is adjustable (0 to 60 degrees). It's easily installed or removed from handlebars and is equipped with a quick-release anti-drop-off function to ensure a high safety level. The new SP-D326 seat pillar fixes saddles firmly in place yet allows for quick, easy adjustments. The screws on the left and right plates are to lock-in the saddle and control its position, while the screw on the cradle is for adjusting its angle.

Kalloy Industrial develops handlebars, stems, and seat posts under 3 brand names: Guizzo (high-end), Uno (midrange), and Kalloy (low-end).

Most of the products are made of aluminum and/or carbon and are made at factories in Shenzhen (China) and Taiwan. Their high-end products are manufactured at the factory in Taiwan, while the Shenzhen factory mainly focuses on their midrange items. They are actively working on product expansion and new model development. The first-rate quality of their products is well established through public opinion and the new ASA-105 7050-T6 aluminum super lightweight stems are especially highly regarded. The ASA-105 stem has a clump diameter of 31.8 mm., a stem length of 80, 90, 100, 110, 120, and 130 mm., and uses a 2014 alloy faceplate. The product was developed through computer diagnosis and actual testing in addition to being CNC machined to produce precise variant thickness. Thus its compatibility to handlebars and front forks has greatly increased as has riding stability as a direct result.

Sun Chang Industry is a Taiwanese parts manufacturer who makes disc brakes, brake shoes, and brake pads. Their latest in disc brakes is the safe and environmentally friendly SCS SXD-7/Buteo claw-5 automatic pad adjustment hydraulic disc brakes. Installation, adjustment and maintenance are a breeze. Its slim designed rotors’ diameters are 80/160mm. Its levers are made of aluminum and come in black/silver or white/black. And it is compatible with Shimano products. In addition to this product, the SCS Nano Teflon inner wire for brakes and

SCS Nano Teflon inner wire for gears are also their newest. These are the first wires to be treated with nanometer material coating, which enhances the performance of brakes and gears to their optimum levels. The wires have a long life and are environmentally friendly.

Transart Graphics

In addition to their home factory in Taiwan, Transart Graphics manufactures products at three other factories in China (Shenzhen, Taicang, and Tianjin). The company has been developing and producing many innovative products one after the other. A couple of their products include piracy-proof decals, using cutting-edge nano-technology, and reflective decals, to reflect automobile headlights, as well as plastic components using their own technology. The Thermo-formed plastic cup holder is one of them. These uniquely shaped cup holders, produced using their own new thermoforming technology, hold cups and drinks securely and steady on bicycles. Their shinny, high-quality colors are achieved through screen-printed graphics. Compared with other plastic components, the manufacturing cost of molding verses injection is another plus to add to the list of

positives. The product material is RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous

Substances; EU regulation restricting the use of certain harmful materials on products such as lead and mercury) and REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals) certified. In addition, their thermoforming plastic components can be used to produce most bicycle parts, such as fenders and chain guards.

In its ongoing quest for quality, Sha-Dar Accessories puts particular eff ort into the development of its high-quality titanium alloy spokes, which happen to be the lightest in the world. As Taiwan’s top-ranking spikes fi rm, Sha-Dar emphasizes proactive product development and has already signifi cantly reduced the weight of titanium alloy spokes. But rather than resting on its laurels, the company continues to raise the bar and sets itself fresh challenges to ceaselessly take on. Sha-Dar Accessories fi rst addressed the issue of lighter weight in earnest in its “PST TB Aero 1422”, which came out in 2004

and weighed 3 g (260 mm). It has continued these eff orts and fi nally in 2009 created a product weighing 2.8 g. With its new “PST X-TRA-LITE”, the company has gone even further to push down weight to 2.6 g. Th e new product reduces the 6.5 g weight of the usual stainless steel spoke by 3.9 g, a 60% reduction. With today’s market calling for increasingly lighter wheel sets, this product beckons with great expectations for things to come. Much of Sha-Dar Accessories’ success lies in the fact that the company has its own laboratory for testing tensile strength, rigidity, materials and other properties. Another underlying factor is its reliable shipping system. Currently, the focal emphasis is being shift ed from OEM production to supplying larger volume of high-grade spokes to the aft er-sales market. Now that this sector is focused on the next breakthrough in high-quality titanium alloy, all eyes on Sha-Dar Accessories.

Innova Rubber

Innova Rubber was founded in 1995 with their main office in Taiwan. The same year a factory in Guangzhou, China, was established, followed by a one in Shanghai in 1998, and one in Pinghu (Zhejiang) in 2001. With these 3 factories, they produce a wide range of tires and tubes for bicycles, motorcycles, wheelchairs, baby carriages, golf carts, industrial and agricultural vehicles, forklifts, and small trucks. ISO-9002 certificates were granted the factories in Guangzhou and Shanghai in 1998. And in 2003, ISO-9001 certificates were granted to all three factories. Within such a short period of only 13 years and some months since its founding, the company continues to develop many new products and new tire tread patterns. With the production number of electric bicycle tires, which require more durability and breaking performance, increasing along with the popularity of electric bicycles in China, the company plans to upgrade the quality and performance of their products. Their new IA-2313 700X23C road tire of the 700C Tubeless Road Cycling series will be their flagship to hoist the Innova Tire brand at the Taipei International Cycle Show 2010.

Hwa Fong Rubber

Hwa Fong Rubberb with production bases in China, Thailand and Taiwan, produces bicycle tires, motorcycle tires, tires for industrial use, and automotive tires, among other products. The company churns out more than 23 million bicycle tires a year in a wide lineup of models that includes tires for mountain bikes, road bikes, BMX bikes, trekking bikes, and city cycles, to cite just a few, and the “DURO” brand, which is the brand name of these products in high demand. Among the “DURO” line-up of tires, the “TruShine” holds particular renown and was awarded this year’s Eurobike Award. It has also reinvented the earlier reflective tires that had side walls with a reflective area measuring around 5 mm. In contrast the “DURO” broadens this wall to between 9 and 18 mm, depending on tire size. This vastly improves visibility and safety for night riders. Moreover, the surface of the reflective material is ink-printed, creating a distinguished and classy design.

The “CL-PD5” is an ingenious pedal/kickstand for mountain bikes installed on the MASSLOAD by Tsai Jung Enterprise that is both a pedal and kickstand. Applying pressure causes the pedal to bend in the middle so that it can be used as a kickstand. The CL-PD5 has

w o n n u m e ro u s i n t e r n a t i o n a l p r i z e s , a m o n g t h e m t h e g o l d m e d a l i n t h e Eurobike Product Division this fall, and like Columbus a n d h i s f a m e d egg , was bo r n from a truly novel concept. Frankly, many m o u n t a i n b i k e fans feel ordinary

kickstands detract from the looks of a bike and that’s why MASSLOAD is so great.

Prize-winning smart pedal doubles as kickstand

This “pedal/kickstand” was developed with the user’s point of view in mind, to deal up solutions to their need. The “CL-PD5” comes in two models, one for the after-sales market and one for use on high-grade mountain bikes. The pedal frame is made of 6061 alloy and the axle is Cro-mo. And surprise, it all weighs in at only 460 gm. Tsai Jung Enterprise has patents pending for it in the USA, EU, Taiwan and China, and is also developing a model for medium-grade mountain bikes. Both models will be supplied to countries where mountain bike use is advanced. Tsai Jung Enterprise manufactures rear carriers, bottle cages and stands, but is most famed for its MASSLOAD on the after-sales market. And although Tsai Jung has a plant in China its MASSLOAD “kickstand” is proudly produced in Taiwan.

Ta y a C h a i n w a s f o u n d e d i n 1 9 6 9 i n Ta i w a n a n d h a s introduced new anti-rust techniques from the automobile industry to benefi t the bicycle world. Their GST (Greener Su r f ace Trea tmen t ) Series is environmentally fr iendly and applied to their products such as bicycle chains and spokes, and screws.

Their Super Single- bicycle chains were created using the GST anti-rust techniques they developed. They offer comfortable rides and high durability. The chain model differs in relation to the hours in the strenuous salt spray test for rust-resistance and corrosion: GST300 means 300 hours; GST500 means 500 hours; and GST1000 means 1000 hours. Their GST screws are made of carbon steel or Cr-Mo steel as the base material and are void of hexavalent chromium. Since GST technology increases the antirust levels, their strength is enhanced and could even be stronger than their stainless steel counterparts.

As the world leading chain maker, KMC has been carrying out research and development of chains for more than 30 years and marketing revolutionary new products one after the other. KMC is at the head of Taiwanese brands and their quality is respected internationally. Many professional racers throughout the world faithfully use their products. Two of the gold medalists and two of the silver medalists at the 2008 Beijing Olympics were using KMC chains, as were 3 champions of the 2009 UCI (Union Cycliste Internationale). As the company moves forward to diversify their business they make full use of IT technology by producing Bluetooth products and lighting systems. The X11SL 11-speed model is realized through inclusion of their most innovative technologies thus the ultimate performance of professional chains can be experienced. The X11SL is super lightweight yet highly durable and safe and includes the MissingLink connector which won the iF Design Award in Germany. It is compatible with Campagnolo 11-speed drive trains and will be available in champion gold. In addition, the company is developing a maintenance tool to easily remove and set up the MissingLink structure.

Velo Enterprise has been developing high-quality, high-functioning saddles in response to varying needs of cyclists for more than 30 years. Velo brands are regularly used by professional team riders and rated highly. One of the new products produced by Velo is Senso Miles 4142, a mountain

bike saddle for women. It’s titanium-railed with their own Cross Bow suspension technology, which disperses shock absorption

while increasing comfort. Since it is designed specifically for a woman’s structure, the saddle is wider and has

heightened support. Another new invention is their Attune Comfort Grip 849AD3-GEL. It is an innovative grip with three different densities, and ergonomic shape. It can be easily installed, adjusted, and secured to

handlebars with a screwdriver within a minute. And as the grip and handlebar-end are connected, it reduces costs for cyclists in the end.

Velo develops their products with the basic concept of being environmentally friendly; therefore they are using more and more recyclable materials in addition to materials that do not cause pollution when discarded.

Cionlli Industrial is a leading Taiwanese saddle manufacturer that produces the Cionlli and aftermarket mcselle brands. In addition to their facilities located at their home base in Taiwan, they manufacture products at three additional factories in China (Taicang, Shunde, and Tianjin) with a new factory under construction in Kunshan, Jiangsu, China, at which they plan to start manufacturing saddles from the fi rst quarter of 2010. Their business venture with a leading Italian saddle maker, Selle San Marco, to manufacture their licensed products, is an example of how the company is expanding its business. Among their 2010 models that are attracting attention is the new Tri-Race triathlon saddle. Its titanium tube frame makes for a decidedly lightweight saddle, while its microfi ber cover (ultra-thin synthetic fi ber) notably decreases drying time, and its padded tip with shell-shaped seat, which is lowered in the midsection, significantly reduces pressure on the ischial. All of these factors combined is what makes the Tri-Race suitable not only for triathlons, but for extended cycling.

Sigma's main products are bike computers and lighting devices. The compact and stylish BC 1909/STS bike computer measures traveling speed, distance and was designed and made for racers and general users who place the highest priorities on heart rate and the expenditure of calories. Its newly developed STS function wirelessly measures traveling speed, cadence (crank rotation frequency), and heart rate. If the cyclist’s heart rate exceeds the target level, the level will be displayed and an alarm will be triggered. Among their lighting devices for bikes, the Hiro is a unique product. Although it has only one red high power LED, it’s able to retain its high brilliance for up to 60 hours. No need to mention it has a fl ashing mode as well as a constant. Visibility during dark hours is excellent and secures the rear range with wide angle. The fl exible bracket makes it easy to mount on aero seat posts or frames. Due to its fast, tool-free mounting and removing abilities, it can be easily protected from theft. Sigma Sport Asia was founded in 2002 in Taiwan and is the Asian affi liate company of Sigma Sport Germany, famous for its bike computers and lighting sets. Among all the Japanese manufacturers that lead the world on the electric assist bicycle market, Sanyo was the first company to launch an electric moped before any of them. The company also holds the record for supplying driving units to major Japanese makers in Japan as well as to foreign makers, such as Sachs and Raleigh. One of the ecological features on their eneloop bikes is ability to the charge the battery while coasting and braking to assist and enable long rides by effi ciently using the clean energy obtained. The two-wheel drive system, where the front wheel is driven by motor power and the rear wheel is driven by manpower, gives smooth, stable rides from start-up,

has been very well-received by cyclists. Based on such achievements, the company attempts to fully challenge the world market in 2010. As Takahiro Wada, Vice President of Sanyo Consumer Electronics Co., Ltd., stated, 'Sanyo is the only company that makes all of its own components, such as regenerative charging hub motors, rechargeable batteries, and control units', and Sanyo is going to use this advantage to its fullest extent. At Eurobike 2009, the company promoted their drive component units. In October 2009, they released a complete eneloop bicycle, an American Synergetic Hybrid Bicycle model, and components in the United States. They will be making a bid for Sanyo units to European manufacturers and the world at the Taipei International Cycle Show 2010.

Haoli Precision was founded in 1979 in Taiwan with their home base in Taichung and launched into the limelight as a unique bicycle light manufacturer in 2006 with their Akslen brand. Since then they have been introducing one innovative product right after the other. The Akslen Vertical Series is one of these. Its headlights can be mounted on front forks to improve visibility, on handlebars then positioned in front of the stem to reserve space, and even on the head tubes of folding bicycles for safer rides, not to mention the variety in regard to brightness, modes, and lighting patterns available due to their patented innovative technologies.

The Vertical Series’ special features include: 1) less space taken due to its vertical designs; 2) constant brightness due to its high power conservation circuits which enhance battery use efficiency; 3) low power indicators display battery life and alert the cyclists; 4) AA batteries are used due to their life being twice that of AAA batteries, thus cost-saving; 5) adjustable lens for easy shifting between high-beams, for focusing illumination and projecting into the far distance-plus low-beams, for widespread illumination and projecting into the near distance on some models.

The “Gyes” brand is the product of Jiuh-Yeh Craft, a top Taiwanese maker of leather office and dining-room furniture. Established in 1993, the firm is run by General Manager James Shu who states it supplies leather saddles, its chief product as well as bags, grips, frame covers and other parts and accessories. Jiuh-Yeh Craft went into the bicycle business in 2004. Earlier, in the course of exhibiting its products at the International Furniture Show in Cologne, Germany, the company had noticed that most of the bicycles in the streets had leather saddles, and developed a strong interest in leather products for bicycles, eventually deciding that saddles, bags and grips could be instrumental in changing the image of the assembled bike. That led to the decision to shift from the furniture to biking sector. A salient feature of Jiuh-Yeh Craft’s leather products is their knack at blending current trends with classic craftwork which overlaps their expertise in leather furniture and bicycles. Representative examples of this include the combination of the GS series of saddles with the SB series of bags, along with grips and other products, all of which are made of cow leather and fit together beautifully. The products work so well because of Jiuh-Yeh Craft’s extensive knowledge of the properties of leather. One example of this stress for the right fit is the “GS-09-1” saddle in

the GS series, which measures 270 x 210 mm, has Cro-mo rails and comes with an Allen key. The “SB-09-1” in the SB series of bags measures 210 x 175 x 160 mm. The band on the SB series bags is designed to fit perfectly through the hole in the saddles in the GS series, creating perfect unity of design.

Salutations from Mr. WalterYeh, Vice President of TAITRA

The Taipei International Cycle Show 2010 will be held for 4 days from March 17th through

the 20th. To promote the show, TAITRA (Taiwan External Trade Development Council), conducted a media tour for the domestic and international bicycle media from November 17th through the 19th, 2009.

This was their 3rd time to host the tour, and 7 foreign press agencies attended: Japan (Cycle Press), United States (Bicycle Retailer and Industry News), Germany (SAZ Bike), Australia (Bicycling Australia), UK (Cycling Plus), the Netherlands (Wieler Revue), and Spain (Solo Bici). On the first day, the 17th, a total of 70 people, including TAITRA officials and domestic Taiwanese reporters , participated in the on board press conference and sample product display held on top

of the paddle-wheeler River Queen. During the river cruise press conference, Mr. Walter Yeh, vice president of TAITRA, stated that, 'Exhibiters in the Taipei International Cycle Show are increasing annually. As of today, November 17th, 2009, the number of exhibiting companies for 2010 is expected to reach 894 and the number of booths is projected to reach 3018, which is the highest number ever ''Yeh stated. In addition, the number of new companies in other than the bicycle field is increasing, such as GPS, fashion, and sport related manufacturers. Furthermore, the number of exhibiters from LEV (Light Electric Vehicles) and car manufacturers is increasing. The coming show builds upon the 2009 events that hosted 762 companies with 2888 booths, and expects an increase of at least 130 booths. But, as there are many companies on the waiting list, the number of exhibiters have not been set. In early 2013, when the annex of the TWTC

NANGANG Exhibition Hall is completed, we should be able to allow all applicants to exhibit their products there . In addition to our regular shuttle buses, there is easy access and commuting since the MRT NANGANG Exhibition Hall Station was completed in July 2009. The Tour de Taiwan 2010 is planned to start at the same time as the show begins and end on the last day by passing the finishing line at the NANGANG Exhibition Hall. After the cruise, TAITRA officials and tour members cycled 15 km. and enjoyed visiting the Guandu Temple and other interesting locations. On the 18th, the tour traveled to Taichung City via the Taiwan High Speed Rail (HSR), which

connects Taipei and Taichung City in 60 minutes, and visited factories in Changhua County, such as J.D. Components, Cheng Shin Rubber, and SR Suntour. At J.D. Components, the Tranz X e-bike was introduced and test driven. A stop at Cheng Shin Rubber and SR Suntour led the press check on the latest products. On the third day and last day, leading complete bicycle manufacturer Ideal Bike and VC-backed Rikulau were visited in Taichung County. At Rikulau, their bicycles with titanium frames were presented and future prospects were disclosed. Then, the tour traveled via HSR to visit Kind Shock Hi-Tech in Tainan where suspension forks under development for the Taipei Cycle Show were introduced. After returning to Taipei, the tour ended. Many of journalists in the tour said that after being invited by leading bicycle manufacturers and saw their innovative products, they got really interested in visiting Taipei Cycle Show 2010 to see more new creative products with touch of class from Taiwan. And excitement and interest reflects the growing cycle fever that’s coming with Taipei Cycle 2010.

Display of sample products on the cruiser. The sample products in the display included new complete bicycles, electric bicycles, parts, and tires by 8 companies including Sliding Bike, CSK, and Ballistic International.

Today, protecting the environment with green mobility is a world trend. It can been witnessed especially in environmentally

advanced countries in Europe where people are focusing on creating bicycle-dominated cities in lieu of public transportation and therefore are succeeding in reducing air and noise pollution while improving public health. This world trend demands for the development and popularization of electric vehicles, which do not use fossil fuel nor pollute the air. As it becomes a major issue for every country, policies giving priority to electric vehicle-related research have been put into action. March 18th is your chance to experience electric bicycles that are chock-full of the latest technologies. 'Let's ride e-bikes and make the earth green!'
