2010 OREGON STATE SPRING PROSPECTUS2

2009 LOOK BACKFor the fourth consecutive year Oregon State’s foot-ball program concluded the year with a winning re-cord at 8-5, the longest streak since a five-year run between 1966-70. For the second straight year the Beavers tied for second in the Pac-10 –a 6-3 mark in 2009. OSU finished just outside the top-25 of both the Associated Press and USA Today Coaches Poll rankings – essentially 27th.

RILEY TO COACH THROUGH THE DECADEHead football coach Mike Riley agreed in Janu-ary to be on the Beaver sidelines through at least 2019, with a contract that adds among other con-siderations an additional year for every bowl game. Riley began his second tenure at OSU in 2003; the second-longest consecutive tenure of any Pac-10 coach – Jeff Tedford at California started in 2002. Riley is 64-47 in nine total seasons and is just 10 wins short of Lon Stiner’s (1933-48) school record for victories.

A TOUGH SCHEDULEOregon State will play one of the toughest schedules in 2010, with non-conference games vs. preseason top 25 teams TCU and Boise State on the docket. The Sept. 4 game vs. TCU will be played at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas while the Beavers will also travel to Bronco Stadium this season for a Sept. 25 contest. The other non-conference game of the season is against Louisville at OSU’s Reser Stadium Sept. 18.

BEAVERS BOWLINGOregon State played in its ninth bowl game in the last 11 seasons, tied for the second most over that span in the Pac-10 with USC, and made a school re-cord fourth consecutive postseason appearance. The Beavers’ five-game postseason win streak ended Dec. 22 at the Las Vegas Bowl, losing to BYU 44-20.

IT WAS A PRETTY GOOD DECADEOregon State was 80-46 (63%) during the last de-cade, compared to 29-81-1 (26%) during the 1990s and 22-85-4 (21%) in the 1980s. The 80 victories rank as the third most in the conference during the decade. Here is how they stacked up league wide: USC 103-25, Oregon 87-38, OSU 80-45, California 71-52, UCLA 67-58, Arizona State 65-59, Washing-ton State 57-64, Arizona 50-69, Washington 50-71 and Stanford 48-69.

SEVEN BEAVERS EARN

ALL-CONFERENCE FIRST TEAMSean Canfield (QB), Jacquizz Rodgers (RB), James Rodgers (WR), Gregg Peat (OG), Keaton

Kristick (LB), Stephen Paea (DT) and Suaesi Tu-

imaunei (ST) earned Pac-10 First Team honors. The seven selections were the most in the Pac-10. Paea added the Morris Trophy as the best defensive line-man in the conference, voted on by the league’s of-fensive linemen. Justin Kahut (PK) earned second team with Alex Linnenkohl (C), David Pa’aluhi (LB), Keith Pankey (LB) and Dwight Roberson (LB) all garnering honorable mention. It’s worth not-ing that four Beaver linebackers were selected. OSU had 61 all-conference selections during the decade, second to USC’s 79 in the Pac-10.

NO TEAM BETTEROregon State is the only team in the Pac-10 to finish among the top three in the league standings in each of the last four years – tied for second in 2008 and ’09, and alone in third in 2006 and ’07. The Bea-vers were 25-11 in the conference during those four years, trailing only USC’s 27-9 mark.

100-PLUS USUALLY A WWhen a Beaver rushes for 100-plus yards it usually equals a victory. OSU has won 19 of its last 21 games (90%) when a rusher gains 100 – the only two losses in that period - Oct. 2, 2008 at Utah (Jacquizz Rod-

gers 101 yds) and to USC Oct. 24, 2009 (Jacquizz 113). Quizz, his brother James Rodgers, Yvenson Bernard and Matthew Sieverson are the individuals who have accounted for the 100-yard outings.

56-7That’s the record of Oregon State when it leads af-ter three quarters with Mike Riley as head coach. Since the start of the 2004 season it is 40-3.

FOUR IN A ROWFor the fourth consecutive year Oregon State fin-ished higher in the Pac-10 standings than it was predicted by the league’s media. The media in 2009, that regularly cover the conference, predicted OSU for fourth place. Here are the predictions for the last four years with finish: 2006 – prediction 7th – actual finish 3rd 2007 – prediction 5th – actual finish 3rd 2008 – prediction 6th – actual finish T2nd 2009 – prediction 4th – actual finish T2nd

STRESS! WHAT STRESS?Beaver fans have learned to deal with the stress of close football games, and for the most part, the out-comes have been favorable. OSU is 15-5 since the start of the 2006 season in games decided by seven points or less.

WIN THE TURNOVER BATTLE,

WIN THE GAMEOver the last 75 games, Oregon State is 30-5 when committing fewer turnovers than its opponent, 9-19 when committing more and 8-4 when even. Oregon State lost just 11 turnovers for the season, the second-fewest in the nation (Cincinnati – 10). The Beavers also lost just four fumbles for the year, tied for second in the nation with Rutgers, Miami and Colorado State – Cincinnati had two. Oddly, on the other side of the ball OSU tied for 105th in turnovers gained with 16.

RUSHERSSince the 2002 season, Oregon State is tied for first in the Pac-10 for the number of times a player has reached the 1,000-yard rushing plateau with seven (missing only 2004). California also has seven, fol-lowed by Oregon (6), USC (4), UCLA (2), Stanford (2), Washington (2), Arizona, Arizona State and Washington State with one each.

COMMANDING FIRST QUARTEROregon State outscored its opponents 307-116 in the first quarter over the last 53 games, including 272-92 in the last 29. The Beavers allowed just 48 in the last 14 first quarters combined, dating back to last year. The 48 points allowed in 2009 were the fewest in the Pac-10.

IN THE (RED) ZONEThe Beavers led the nation for redzone scoring per-centage at 96.4 percent (54-56). OSU scored 41 times via touchdowns and 13 via field goals.

THE FIRST SINCE 1997Freshman offensive tackle Michael Philipp became the first true freshman offensive lineman to start a game at Oregon State since Keith DiDomenico did at right guard in 1997 vs. USC and Oregon.

BEAVER FACTS

Page 3: 2010 SPRING PROSPECTUS - Oregon State Beavers3 2010 OREGON STATE SPRING PROSPECTUS TRUE FRESHMEN MAKE A MARK Oregon State played eight true freshmen in the season opener against Portland

2010 OREGON STATE SPRING PROSPECTUS3

TRUE FRESHMEN MAKE A MARKOregon State played eight true freshmen in the season opener against Portland State; the most in modern history – up until the late 1980s true fresh-men played in junior varsity games. The eight fresh-men to open this season were OT Michael Philipp, WR Markus Wheaton, OT Geoff Garner, Safety Jordan Poyer, LB Rueben Robinson, RB Jovan

Stevenson, and linebackers “Feti” and “Uani”

Unga. It should be noted that Garner and the Unga brothers came to OSU after two-year LDS Missions, and Stevenson enrolled at OSU during winter term of 2009 and was thus a greyshirt.

LEFTY SETS ACCURACY RECORDSenior quarterback Sean Canfield set an OSU re-cord for completion percentage for a season at 67.9 – the fifth best mark in the nation. The left-hander completed 303 of 446 of his attempts, including 21 touchdowns. He averaged 64 pass attempts per in-terception in 2009 after entering the year with an interception every 22 pass attempts. He finished fourth all-time at OSU with 5,970 passing yards and is fourth for touchdown passes with 38. Canfield is the first Beaver quarterback to ever be named Pac-10 First Team and set the career mark for pass completion percentage at OSU at 64.1.

QUIZZ SETS TOUCHDOWN RECORDSophomore running back Jacquizz Rodgers was one of 16 candidates for the Maxwell Award (top player) and a semifinalist for the Doak Walker Award (top RB) and Walter Camp Award, tied a school record for the most points for a season by a Bea-ver with 132 (Steven Jackson, 2003). His 22 total touchdowns (21 rushing) tied for third in the nation. For overall rushing he is already fourth at OSU with 2,693 yards. Quizz is the new school record holder for single season rushing touchdowns with 21. If he averages his first two years rushing total he will end his career with 5,498, trailing only former USC star Charles White (6,245) in the Pac-10.

JAMES SETS ALL-PURPOSE RECORDBeaver junior receiver James Rodgers averaged 179.1 yards per game for all-purpose yards (Rec, PR, KR) which ranked first in the Pac-10 and sev-enth in the nation. He is the new school record hold-er for single season all-purpose yards with 2,328 and notched a school record 303 all-purpose yards in the regular season finale at Oregon. James led the Pac-10 for receptions per game at 7.0, was second for receiving yards per game at 79.5 and set a school record for receptions in a season with 91.

HIDDEN STATIf it weren’t for Damian Williams’ (USC) 63-yard punt return, OSU would have been among the na-tional leaders for punt coverage. As it is, the Beavers allowed 6.2 yards per return on just 13 attempts. Take away Williams’ return, OSU allowed 1.5 yards – which would have led the nation.

1,000 x 2Junior receiver James Rodgers is the second Bea-ver in school history to amass 1,000 yards rushing and 1,000 yards receiving. James has 1,297 career yards rushing and 1,849 career yards receiving and has joined Pat Chaffey (1986, 88-89), who accumu-lated 1,421 yards rushing and 1,293 yards receiv-ing.

ACADEMICSIt was a small but successful class of seniors on and off the field. Players such as Sean Canfield, Tim

Clark, Patrick Henderson, Taylor Kavanaugh, Keaton Kristick, Lyle Moevao, Gregg Peat and John Reese, if not played, suited up for four bowl games. Academically, Kavanaugh graduated in con-struction engineering management before the sea-son. The following players graduated in December – Sean Canfield (philosophy), Patrick Henderson (sociology), Sioeli Nau (liberal studies) and John

Reese (speech communication). Graduating in March 2010 are Tim Clark (human development/family studies), Howard Croom (sociology), Latu

Moala (liberal studies), Lyle Moevao (sociology), and Gregg Peat (double major in accounting and finance). March graduates include Damola Adeniji (liberal studies) and Keaton Kristick (business), and in July Ben Terry (sociology). OSU has had 28 Pac-10 All-Academic selections over the last two years.

GOOD WORKS GUYBeaver senior receiver, punt returner, holder Taylor

Kavanaugh was one of 12 Football Bowl Subdivi-sion (FBS) student-athletes to be recognized by the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) on its “Good Works Team.” The honor is given to play-ers that embody the true spirit of “teamwork” and “giving back” through commendable acts of kind-ness and community service. Kavanaugh is involved in many community service events and last spring break visited Guatemala with a team of student en-gineers to build a house for a needy family. He was introduced at halftime of last year’s Sugar Bowl.

BEAVER FACTS

RUNNING BACK U?Former Oregon State running backs Ken Simonton, Yvenson Bernard (Winnipeg Blue Bombers) and Ste-ven Jackson (St. Louis Rams) all rank in the top 11 of the Pac-10 Conference for career rushing. USC is the only other school in the league with more – Charles White, Marcus Allen, Anthony Davis and Ricky Bell. If Jacquizz Rodgers averages his first two years rushing total he will end his career with 5,498, trailing only former USC star Charles White (6,245).

WALK-ONSWide receiver Mike Hass (2005 Biletnikoff Award winner) was one; placekicker Alexis Serna (2005 Groza Award recipient) was one; punter Johnny

Hekker (2008 Sun Bowl Special Teams MVP) was one; quarterback Jonathan Smith (2001 Fi-esta Bowl Offensive MVP) was one. That is just a small sample of walkons at Oregon State that had or having great careers at Oregon State. Last sea-son opened with former walkons Mike Remmers (RT) and Damola Adeniji (WR) starting, and cur-rent walkon Grant Johnson (LG). Senior receiver/holder/punt returner Taylor Kavanaugh also was a walkon until recently and Adeniji learned he had earned a scholarship on Sept. 4, the eve of the sea-son opener.

2010 OREGON STATE SPRING PROSPECTUS8

The last decade for Oregon State football was its best ever; eight bowl games, national rankings and four consecutive top three finishes in the Pac-10 Conference standings. The new decade sets up for success as well as head coach Mike Riley welcomes 19 starters back for the 2010 season, the second-highest number in the Pac-10 behind Washington’s 20. The Beavers will need that experience as they play the first month against preseason top 25 teams TCU and Boise State, essentially both road games. “I like playing games like this, it’s a great opportunity for the pro-gram,” Riley said. “It really presents opportunities for our players and something for them to look forward to during offseason conditioning.”

OFFENSE

The biggest question mark for the Beavers on offense entering spring practice is quarterback. The Beavers have had the luxury of recent quarterbacks Derek Anderson, Matt Moore, Sean Canfield and Lyle Moevao, but enter this year with a first-time OSU starter. Sophomore Ryan Katz and junior Peter Lalich have the most experience in Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) games. Katz complet-ed 14 of 27 pass attempts in four games last season for 232 yards and one touchdown, while Lalich started twice in a 10-game career at Virginia before transferring in September of 2008. “Whenever there is a changing of the guard at quarterback; that’s big news and a big issue,” Riley said. “I felt over the last year we have had these guys (QBs) spaced out pretty good; last year we had two seniors, two intermediate guys and two young guys redshirting – that’s a good picture. Now, it’s a big factor, but at least we have two guys who are a little older, been in the program and have the talent to play. Katz will have the first turns, but we are going to go into spring without any preconceived notions and just let these guys play.” Spring will also be a time to develop depth at quarterback, where highly thought of redshirt-freshmen Cody Vaz and Jack Lomax will get considerable reps. “We probably will come out of spring ball with some determina-tion of who our starter is, but maybe not as we don’t necessarily have to make that call right away,” Riley said. “The competition will probably carry on like it has before into the fall. I like the talent at quarterback, we will see who emerges. In reality it’s about as good of a situation as we could hope for when you consider we lost two starters who won a lot of games for us.” Heisman Trophy candidate junior running back Jacquizz Rod-gers will be the go-to-guy for whoever is behind center. “Quizz” is on pace to be among the top three running backs all-time in terms of yards in the Pac-10 Conference, but don’t count on him taking many hits in April scrimmages. “He will get more reps than he did last year when he was return-ing from injury, but you probably won’t see him in much scrimmage action,” Riley predicted. “I don’t think he needs to prove to anybody that he is our every down back.” Spring will be more about developing depth at running back to give Jacquizz rest during the fall. Junior Ryan McCants is healthy af-ter playing in just four games last season while recovering from a knee injury he suffered the previous spring in a scrimmage. Sophomore Jo-van Stevenson showed glimpses of being an excellent back as a true-freshman last year and unheralded sophomore Jordan Jenkins

has been excellent on special teams and is talented enough to likely warrant playing action somewhere. “There could be role players at running back after Quizz,” Riley explained. “There could be a third down back or a first-and-10 type guy. We’ll see how this unfolds, because we have three good candi-dates behind Quizz. Quizz is an every down back, he’s a good pass receiver, pass protector and of course a runner. We will be looking for the most reliable guy and that will determine who is the best fit for certain situations behind Quizz.” Quizz gets most of the headlines, but his brother James Rod-gers had a tremendous year in 2009, setting a single season school record with 91 receptions. He is on the verge of breaking the school record for all-purpose yards, currently with 5,077. James Rodgers is the leader of the receiving corps that has de-veloped into a strength for the team. The Beavers also return sopho-mores Jordan Bishop and Kevan Walker, and senior Aaron Nich-ols at slotback. Junior Darrell Catchings and sophomores Markus Wheaton and Geno Munoz return at split end. Behind Rodgers at Z (flanker) is a talented group of freshmen led by Micah Hatfield, Ga-rett Hall and Kevin Cummings. True-freshman Obum Gwacham has already shown his athletically ability as a high jumper during the winter and figures to be in the competition at split end. “The X (split end) position will truly have a 1 and 1A on the depth chart with Darrell and Markus,” Riley said. “This is a spot where there is wide open competition. We actually have four very good receivers here.” The offensive line is largely intact, minus the graduate of Pac-10 First Team right guard Gregg Peat. Starting left guard Grant Johnson will be sidelined with a shoulder injury for spring, opening up opportu-nities for senior Ryan Pohl, junior Michael Lamb and redshirt fresh-man Tyler Thomas. Staying on the left side, sophomore Michael Philipp has already demonstrated he will be a force in the league for seasons to come at left tackle with senior Timi Oshinowo back from injury that forced him to miss last year. Senior Alex Linnenkohl is certain postseason honors candidate at center with 26 straight starts. Redshirt freshman Josh Andrews and Aaron Magnuson will have plenty of opportunities to develop in Linnenkohl’s shadow. Right guard will be the only position on the line that will have a new starter. Junior Burke Ellis has the most experience, but it will be a battle between him and sophomores Colin Kelly and Colin Lyons. Junior Mike Remmers returns at right tackle, with sophomore Geoff Garner and freshman redshirt Grant Enger also in the mix. “Right guard is the one spot where we have to find a starter,” Riley said. “Burke has done a great job in our program; we have high hopes for Colin Kelly, as we do Colin Lyons.” A wealth of experience returns at the tight end/H-back positions. Senior Brady Camp returns to the starting role at tight end, while junior Joe Halahuni made huge strides late last year and could be on his way to a postseason honors season at H-back. Senior John Reese returns from a redshirt year to add to the depth with Halahuni and sophomore Colby Prince entering the fray at tight end with great expectations for if not this season, the next two. “Brady has done a really nice job through the years and Colby is a good young prospect,” Riley said. “I’m very excited about Joe and John is coming off a redshirt season – we have two really good athletes at H-back.”

All four starters (seniors) return on the front, making it among the most experienced groups in the nation. The unit is led by postseason honors and 2009 Morris Trophy co-recipient (top Pac-10 defensive lineman) tackle Stephen Paea. Paea turned down an opportunity to enter the NFL Draft to return for his senior year and will be on the “watch lists” for many of the prestigious awards. “Stephen is a great player,” Riley said. “He creates a lot of havoc with his strength that forces double teams and enables his teammates to make plays. He is one of the best tackles I have coached at any level.” Paea is flanked at tackle by senior Brennan Olander with Gabe Miller and Matt LaGrone working at the ends. Sophomore Taylor Henry is expected to push to unseat a returning starter on the outside, while former end junior Kevin Frahm moves inside and join Castro Masaniai, Tonu Tuimalealiifano, Evan Hull and others. The linebacker corps, expected to a very veteran group for 2010, has been dealt a blow with the possible season ending Achilles in-jury suffered by senior Keith Pankey in February and the departure of junior middle backer David Pa’aluhi. Still, seniors Dwight Rober-son and Keo Camat, and sophomores Rueben Robinson, “Feti” ‘Unga and “Uani” ‘Unga all have playing experience. Sophomore Tony Wilson returns after a knee injury and is immediately a chal-lenger for the starting role in the middle. “Before spring ball we lost a pair of starters and that’s a lot of plays between those two guys,” Riley said. “We think we have the abil-ity there to replace Pa’aluhi, but we don’t have the experience and that is something we can’t replace. The group overall will look pretty good athletically. We are optimistic that Keith will be ready for fall camp,

which would be a huge plus.” The secondary is a veteran group, minus the loss of senior start-er right cornerback Tim Clark. Senior James Dockery and junior Brandon Hardin head into spring as the starters, with sophomores Keynan Parker and Jordan Poyer providing backup. The safety positions also return junior starters Lance Mitchell and Cameron Collins, and former starter senior Suaesi Tuimaunei. “We will have better depth at corner and should have some great competition,” Riley said. “We have an excellent group of safeties with many of them playing special teams.”

SPECIAL TEAMS

The Beavers enter 2010 in outstanding shape on special teams, with the return of senior placekicker Justin Kahut, junior punter Johnny Hekker, junior longsnapper Marcus Perry and returner James Rodgers. Hekker accepts a new role as the holder this season and also could add to his repertoire as a kickoff specialist. Riley and special teams coach Bruce Read will also experiment with an assortment of return possibilities including Jordan Poyer, Rashaad Reynolds, Dax Dilbeck, Markus Wheaton, Kevan Walker and Jovan Stevenson.

Mike Riley has rightfully been credited with the rebirth of Oregon State football. The 57-year-old head coach has guided the Beavers to six bowl games in the last seven years, winning five, and started the rejuvenation of the program during his first tenure in 1997-98 that subsequently made three postseason appearances. A member of the American Football Coaches Association’s (AFCA) Board of Trustees and Ethics Committee, Riley is the second winningest coach in Beaver football history with 64 victories - 10 short of matching Lon Stiner’s (1933-48) total. His resume sparkles with achievements, including the 2008 AFCA and Pac-10 Conference Coach of the Year. The Beavers are the only team to finish in the top three of the Pac-10 standings in each of the last four seasons and have appeared in the final Associated Press top-25 rankings in three of the last four years. The tenth-year head coach has also led his team to outstanding success in the classroom, where over the last three years Beavers have been honored by the Pac-10 for academic achievement 35 times. He’s also developed fu-ture NFL players with 20 draftees (as of Jan. 2010) since his second arrival in 2003 and only USC has had more than OSU’s 61 all-conference selections. Riley is the first coach in OSU history to win more than one NCAA-sanc-tioned bowl game at OSU, capturing the 2003 Las Vegas Bowl, the 2004 Insight Bowl, the 2006 and 2008 Sun Bowls, and the 2007 Emerald Bowl titles. He also is the first coach to lead the program to more than one winning conference season (5-3 in ‘04, 6-3 in ‘06, 6-3 in ‘07, 7-2 in ‘08 and 6-3 in `09) since 1969. In 2009, Riley and his staff had a monumental task of replacing nearly every starter on defense and a total of seven NFL draftees. The Beavers not only qualified for a bowl game, but also for the second straight year played the season finale for the opportunity to receive the Rose Bowl berth. A league-high seven Beavers earned first team All-Pac-10 honors and the team finished higher than the preseason predictions for the fourth consecutive year. The 2008 Beavers lost more starters than any other Pac-10 team, but Riley and his staff found replacements within the program to turn what was expected to be a rebuilding year into a 9-4 season and the program’s second-best ever mark in the Pac-10 Conference at 7-2 (tied for second). All of this while playing a schedule that was considered one of the toughest in the nation that included three BCS bowl teams (USC, Utah, Penn State). The keynote victory of the season was a 27-21 win over then No. 1 USC Sept. 25 - at the time the Beavers were unranked. The season culminated with a 3-0 vic-tory over No. 18 Pittsburgh in the Sun Bowl, a game OSU played without two of the team’s top three offensive weapons - Pac-10 Offensive MVP and All-America running back Jacquizz Rodgers and his brother receiver James Rodgers. The team ended the year No. 18 in the final Associated Press Poll and No. 19 in the USA Today. His 2007 team won seven of the final eight games on the way to a 9-4 mark, just one game behind co-Pac-10 champions USC and Arizona State at 6-3 in the league. The team won at No. 2 California when a Bear victory would have moved them to No. 1 and beat No. 18 Oregon in Eugene. The defensive unit finished first in the nation against the run and accumulated the most yards lost via tackles than any other team in the Football Bowl Subdivision. The 2006 team became only the second club in OSU history to capture at least 10 victories - winning eight of the last nine, including defeating No. 3

USC, No. 24 Hawai’i and Oregon. To cap one of the best seasons in school history, the Beavers won a thrilling game over Missouri (39-38) in arguably the best Sun Bowl ever played. The final summary of the season showed OSU finishing third in the Pac-10, just one game behind co-winners USC and California. In 2004 the team accepted the challenge of playing both the ‘03 defend-ing national champions, the eventual 2004 national champions and faced one of the most difficult schedules overall in the nation. The team fought through early setbacks before defeating Oregon in the annual Civil War in then record fashion. The victory over the archrivals propelled OSU to a convincing 38-21 victory over Notre Dame in the 16th annual Insight Bowl. The Beavers closed 2004 winning six of their final seven games and pushing Orange Bowl/Na-tional champion USC to the wire. The hometown boy - he attended Corvallis High School - returned to the Beaver sideline for the second time and led the program to the 2003 Las Vegas Bowl title. His ‘03 team set numerous individual and team records, and led the Pac-10 Conference for both offense and defense. He followed up the ‘03 team’s success by signing the program’s best ever recruiting class, ac-cording to several scouting organizations. Riley left Oregon State after the 1998 season to pursue a unique oppor-tunity to become the head coach of the National Football League’s San Diego Chargers. He spent four years in the NFL, returning to Oregon State after a one-year stint as an assistant with the New Orleans Saints. Riley was a popular choice when he was originally hired for the position in late December of 1996 and was equally as popular upon his hiring the second time. Riley calls Corvallis his hometown, although he was born in Wallace, Ida-ho. He grew up watching Beaver football, as his father Bud was an assistant coach for the program from 1965-72 and again in 1979. Mike was a standout quarterback at Corvallis High School, leading the Spartans to the 1970 state title. Riley, who already had coaching in his blood at a young age, made the decision to continue playing the sport in college at the University of Alabama for legendary coach Paul “Bear” Bryant. He played cornerback from 1971-74, helping the Tide to four Southeastern Conference titles and the 1973 national championship. Riley immediately launched a successful coaching career following his graduation from Alabama. His first stop was as a defensive graduate assis-tant coach for Mike White at the University of California in 1975. He helped the Bears to an 8-3 record and a share of the Pacific-8 Conference title, the first and only for the program since the Pac-8/10 Conference was formed in 1968. He continued his education and his coaching in 1976 at Whitworth Col-lege in Spokane, Wash. He finished his master’s degree in physical education in 1977 while working for the popular Pacific Northwest coach and future Canadian Football League legend Hugh Campbell.

Riley’s first full-time appointment came at NAIA powerhouse Linfield Col-lege in McMinnville, Ore. From 1977-82 he served as the program’s defensive coordinator and secondary coach, as well as assistant athletic director. Riley assisted head coach Ad Rutschman’s Wildcats to a six-year record of 52-7-1, which included five conference titles and the 1982 undefeated NAIA title team. An opportunity to coach in the professional ranks presented itself following the ‘82 season, and Riley was on his way to the Canadian Football League’s Winnipeg Blue Bombers as the secondary coach. During his three-years as an assistant, Winnipeg produced a 32-15-1 mark and won the 1984 Grey Cup title. Riley returned to the college level in 1986 as an assistant coach at the University of Northern Colorado, before being named the youngest coach in CFL history in 1987 with Winnipeg at 33-years of age. Riley guided the Bombers to two Grey Cup titles (1988, ‘90) and was named the CFL’s Coach of the Year in those seasons. He was inducted into the club’s Hall of Fame June 13, 2007. In 1991 Riley took over the San Antonio Riders of the World Football League, spending two seasons before the league suspended its North Ameri-can operations. He returned to the college ranks in 1993 when then USC head coach John Robinson offered him the position of offensive coordinator and quar-terbacks coach - he later became assistant head coach. The Mesa (Ariz.) Tribune named him the league’s top assistant coach in 1993 after leading the Trojan offense to record setting numbers. Then USC quarterback Rob John-son earned numerous Pac-10 and NCAA records, and would later become a first-round draft pick. Riley remained at USC through the 1997 season, helping the Trojans to victories in the Rose, Cotton, and Freedom Bowls. USC won one outright league title, shared another and finished second one time. In addition, Riley has been the head coach for three postseason all-star games - the Hula Bowl, East-West Shrine Game and Blue-Gray All-Star Classic.

Mike and his wife Dee are the parents of one son, Matthew, and one daughter, Kate. Matthew, an OSU graduate, is currently employed within the Beaver Athletic Department as a video specialist and Kate is a senior at OSU. Mike’s brother, Edward Riley, is a physician and Associate Professor at the Stanford University School of Medicine. Riley is under contract at OSU through at least 2019 - his contract rolls over one year for every time the team plays in a bowl game. His success at all levels is well documented. Riley has earned the respect of players, coaches, media and fans. He has been called the savior of Or-egon State football and the future continues to look bright for the Orange and Black.
