9:30 to 10:00 a.m.Mineral Oil in Adhesive Formulated for Packaging Tape; Physical Properties and Adhesive CharacteristicsAnna Eriksson, NYNAS ABTo optimize the performance of a styrene block copolymer (SBC)-based pressure sensitive adhesive, the focus often lies on the base polymer and resin system and less on the hydrocarbon oil used as plasticizer. This presentation will look at a study on the impact of different types of oils used in packaging tape adhesive formulations. Results show that the choice of oil has an impact on the adhesive performance and that it could be possible to further optimize the formulation by choosing the most suitable oil to a given adhesive system. In addition, results from an evaluation of viscoelastic properties will be discussed.

10:00 to 10:30 a.m.Design and Development of Acrylic Emulsion Adhesives and PSAs that are People and Environmentally FriendlySumihisa Oda, Saiden Chemical Industry Co., Ltd.Jeff Lamb, Saiden TechnologiesIn recent years, there has been a shift from solution acrylics used in paints, adhesives and pressure sensitive adhesives to water-based technologies. Countries around the world have imposed restric-tions on VOCs and environmentally hazardous substances. This presentation will report on various developments including VOC reduction by reducing residual monomers and limiting breakdown of monomer components, as well as technologies for emulsifying high softening point tackifiers for use in acrylic waterborne PSAs without the use of solvents.

10:30 to 11:00 a.m.Structural Adhesives with a High W/E RatioXiaobin Wang, ITW PlexusIt is common for customers to ask for a structural adhesive possess-ing an ideal cure profile offering long enough working and fast enough fixture times. In this presentation, you will learn how you can use the W/E ratio, the ratio between the working time and exothermic peak time, to describe how a cure file of an adhesive is ideal. The presenter will discuss challenges in designing structural adhesives with a high W/E ratio, share general ideas on designing such structural adhesives, and demonstrate some examples of MMA-based structural adhesives with a high W/E ratio.

11:00 to 11:30 a.m.Two-Component Polyurethane Adhesives Having Novel PropertiesSyed Mahdi, Dow AutomotiveUlrich Tribelhorn, Dow Automotive SwitzerlandWhile the preferred choice for direct-glazing and semi-structuralmodular assembling for automotive parts, one-component, moisture-cure polyurethane adhesives have a disadvantage—longer curingtime to achieve full adhesive properties, especially at low temperatureand humidity. When a long curing time is not acceptable to meetdesired process conditions, two-component polyurethane adhesivesare used. Two-component polyurethane adhesives offer advantages

Daily Program – Monday

over traditonal two-component adhesives in that they can cure rapidly with high modulus and high elongation, which is essential when bonding dissimilar substrates. This presentation will explore a novel family of two-component polyurethane adhesives developed to address opportunities in the automotive industry that provides primerless adhesion to dissimilar substrates, offers sub stan tially no changes in adhesive mechanical properties within usage tem pera-ture; is independent of service temperature; builds rapid adhesive strength; and possesses higher mechanical properties.

11:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.Linking Process Improvement (Lean) Initiatives Directly to the Bottom Line through Lean Navigational Charts and ScorecardsPhilip Kirby, Organization Thoughtware International Inc.One of the crucial issues facing the lean enterprise today is how to get an instant read on the impact of a lean initiative on the bottom line. Typically, 40% to 80% of all “ lean projects/initiatives” are not based on strategy and thus do not contribute to the bottom line. Lean enterprise success is really all about execution…not intention. In this session, you will learn how to:■ Translate the Lean Strategy into everyday action through the use

of Lean Navigational Charts;■ Link the Future State Value Stream to the Customer Value

Proposition as defined by the SNC; and■ Use the Lean Scorecard to navigate and measure lean successes.

2:15 to 2:45 p.m.Innovative Methodologies for Hot-Melt Adhesives Lay-Down Can Save Money, Time and Create Customer Trust and LoyaltyMike Budai, ITW Dynatec AmericasThere is a close relationship between hot-melt polymers and the equipment to provide a proper solution for the customer. In this presentation, the relationship between various hot-melt polymers (rheology, temperature, softening point, specific gravity, and viscosity) and the adhesive lay-down technologies available for their successful application will be examined. To ensure a project’s success, it is important to understand how the equipment manu-facturer views the end-user’s solution and that adhesives and equipment are not sold without first considering the entire project as a one turn-key solution for the customer.
