2010 NCCU Volleyball

Season Outlook

a NEW HOME, a NEW BEGINNING aND ONE fINaL YEaRNCCU enters a new era as one team with ONE HEART

As the 2010 season quickly approaches, North Carolina Central University must prepare for one of their biggest challenges yet. A new era of NCCU athletics has arrived, both on the court and off, as the Eagles settle in to a new, but familiar place, the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC).

As NCCU settles back in to a place where they once belonged, now part of the MEAC, they must adjust to a new home, a new beginning as a conference school with a full Division I schedule, while soaring into its fourth year of provisional status. No longer homeless, NCCU can give fans what they once had, a championship program. NCCU fans can expect nothing but greatness from the Eagles as they look to build a winning tradition. The NCCU volleyball team is no different as they take their strength and competitiveness into the MEAC with a history of championship gold.

The Eagles return nine from last year’s squad that went 9-23 as a third-year Division I program. Of those nine, three make up the starting rotation. With nine returnees and three impressive newcomers, the Eagles look to win both on the court and off as they continue their progression towards becoming a top mid-major competitor.

Head coach Georgette Crawford-Crooks, who enters her fifth season at the helm of the Eagle program, expects a more competitive team than last season, including a better product with a higher skill level. With the most competitive schedule to date, the Eagles will rise to the challenge, play hard and compete.

“Our schedule is very competitive this year,” said Crawford-Crooks. “It is probably the most competitive it has ever been because we are playing Duke, who ranks among the top-75 in the country, as well as Minnesota, who finished the 2009 season ranked fourth in the nation. We are also diving into MEAC play a little bit more this season, where we will face Florida A&M, who won the 2009 MEAC title and made an appearance in postseason play.”

LEaDERSHIpLeading this year’s team will be seniors Belinda Behncke-Biney and Shantel Moore, who must fill the vacancy that was left by senior Avaniki Campbell, the leader of last year’s squad and the blocking power behind the Eagle defense. The senior duo is coming off a successful junior campaign after leading in several offensive categories.

Junior Raven King and junior transfer Emanuelle Santos will also step into leadership roles this season.

“I am looking for Shantel and Belinda to step into a leadership role this season,” added Crawford-Crooks. “We also have Shaday [Raven], who was one of our captains last year and who we are watching to see how she is going to mature and grow. I am expecting Emanuelle Santos to come in and be an instant and strong leader for us, as well.”

NEWCOMERSSantos, a Cisco Junior College standout, joins a pair of fresh talent as she is one of three newcomers to come aboard this season. Jzima-Malaki Kalao and Kalin Russell will make up the NCCU freshmen class as each of them brings a whole new level of talent and competition to the 2010 team.

“I am looking for all three of my newcomers to come in and make an immediate impact on this squad,” said Crawford-Crooks. “They each bring a natural competitiveness, where they do not want to be on the bench, excellent ball control, and natural skills. They are all technically sound, which will be a great addition to our program.”

OUTSIDE HITTERSAnchoring the outside hitter position, one of the deepest positions on the hardwood for the Eagles, is Behncke-Biney, who finished the 2009 campaign as the Eagles’ Most Valuable Player and was named to the NCAA Division I Volleyball All-Independent First Team. She led the team in six categories, including kills and service aces.

Season Outlook

“I believe Belinda will have a very successful year, especially with the addition of the young ladies that are coming in,” added Crawford-Crooks. “She was very excited about them coming and she had a very good spring. She has already made some changes in all areas of her game and she has stepped it up quite a bit.”

Her partner in crime is Moore, the other senior on this year’s squad. Moore, who was named The Banks Law Firm NCCU Student-Athlete of the Month for September, returns as the Eagles’ second offensive threat, serving as both an outside hitter and a right side hitter. Last season, she was second on the team in five categories, including block assists and total blocks. She will serve as the Eagles’ leading blocker this season.

Behncke-Biney and Moore have been working hard in the offseason to put on the best performances of their career as they look to leave the Eagles with a winning record. Santos, who can play every position on the floor, will serve as a utility player for the Eagles this season, but she will contribute significantly to the outside hitter spot, while being joined by juniors Alexis John and Maritsann Sinclair and sophomoreTocarra Jones.

SETTERSThe setter position will have a different look this season with the loss of starting setter Kiara Brown. A pair of student-athletes will take on the setter role. With the loss of Brown, the setter position is wide open. Vying for that starting role is freshman Kalao, along with junior Santos. Both will see time at the setter position this season.

“This season, we have a lot of depth at the outside hitter position and several different looks at the setter position,” said Crawford-Crooks. “I have two players that can set and seven that can play on the outside. Emanuelle is an outsider hitter by nature, while Jzima is a setter, but both can set and they both are very good and solid hitters.”

RIGHT SIDETwo student-athletes will rotate on the right side for the Eagles this season. Senior Moore, along with sophomore Courtney Williams will battle for the responsibilities on the right side.

Moore will anchor the right side as she returns as one of the top offensive players from last season. Williams saw some action as a true freshman last season and will look to grow and mature as she takes on her sophomore campaign.

MIDDLE HITTERSWith the departure of blocking sensation Avaniki Campbell, NCCU will look to fill that void as they stand as one of the premier blocking teams, recording 221 total blocks last season. Looking to fill that gap in the middle are juniors Tasha-Gaye Richards and Sashalee Wallen and freshmen Russell and Kalao.

Wallen took over the ranks as the key reserve for the Eagles last season, where she finished with 42 total blocks. She will see more action as she grows into a key player for NCCU in her second season as an Eagle. Russell is a true middle hitter, standing at 5-10. Her strength and power in the middle will help the Eagles improve defensively.

Wallen and Richards serve as utility players as well for the Eagles, showing their versatility and athleticism. They will see action at several positions on the floor, while Kalao is a true setter, but brings strength in her hitting ability.

DEfENSIVE SpECIaLISTSRounding out this year’s squad and one of the most important positions on the court is the defensive specialist, which will be anchored by returning libero King, who led the team in digs last season with 289.

Assisting King at the defensive specialist position will be John and Jones. Each of them will look for a chance to contribute to the Eagles’ defensive efforts.

CONCLUSIONThis season, NCCU will embark on a new journey with a new home, a new beginning and the transition finale. The Eagles will begin their MEAC adventure striving for excellence as they come together with one goal and one heart.

Head Coach Georgette Crawford-Crooks

Georgette Crawford-Crooks

fifth Year

California (Pa.), 1994

Georgette Crawford-Crooks came to North Carolina Central University as head volleyball coach in 2006 after spending two years as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at North Carolina State University.

In her first season as head coach, the Eagles posted an overall record of 32-13 (the most victories in school history), including a 14-0 record in CIAA play. NCCU also won the CIAA Tournament Championship and advanced to the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region Championship for the third consecutive year.

Crawford-Crooks inherited the two-time defending CIAA champions, but only returned four letterwinners and one starter from the previous season. Still, the Eagles extended their CIAA winning streak to 41 straight contests and won two tournaments in which NCCU was the lone NCAA Division II representative (the Hampton University Lady Pirate Invitational and the Winston-Salem State Lady Rams Invitational).

Under the guidance of Crawford-Crooks, six Eagles received post-season women’s volleyball honors, including junior outside hitter Shari Matthews as the CIAA Player of the Year and the NCAA Division II National Player of the Year.

For her efforts, Crawford-Crooks was voted as the 2006 CIAA Women’s Volleyball Coach of the Year.

In 2007, her second season at NCCU and the program’s first season as a Division I competitor, the Eagles posted a 21-13 overall record, against an entire Division I schedule.

On August 24, 2007, the first day of Division I athletic competition for NCCU, the honor of opening the Eagles’ Division I era went to the women’s volleyball team. The Eagles swept Norfolk State in the first match of the day, and then in the nightcap against ACC opponent N.C. State, the Eagles found themselves behind two games to none, but rallied for a 3-2 victory. Crawford-Crooks joined NCCU with a total of 11 years of coaching experience to the job, including four years as the head coach at High Point University. She was head

coach when High Point moved to NCAA Division I in 1999, and helped guide the Panthers program to a successful transition to the NCAA’s highest classification. During that time, she also was the area representative for the American Volleyball Coaches Association’s weekly Division I Top 25 rankings.

Prior to N.C. State, Crawford-Crooks was the assistant coach at North Carolina A&T State University, where she put her experiences as a head coach to use in helping the Lady Aggies with recruiting, coordinating practices, conditioning and workouts, and scouting opponents. The Lady Aggies recorded 20-plus victories both seasons she was with N.C. A&T.

A graduate of California University of Pennsylvania, Crawford-Crooks was a first-team All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference selection in 1992, 1993 and 1994, helping lead her team to a conference championship in 1992. She also earned AVCA All-Region honors as a junior and senior.

She received her bachelor’s degree in business administration in 1994, and then earned a master’s in business administration in 1996, followed by another master’s in education, math and computer science in 1999, all from California University of Pennsylvania. Crawford-Crooks was later inducted into the 2003 California University Hall of Fame.

Join the ClubBecome part of something bigger than ever before – the new Eagle Club. Your annual contribution benefits our sports programs and helps bring recognition to the entire university, which is great for campus life and Eagle pride.

Special Groups Within The Club

There’s only one Eagle Club, but there are a few groups within the club that are given special recognition. NCCU letterwinners receive E-Varsity Club status, which includes extra perks and discounts. Our student members go by the Screaming Eagles, and our youngest supporters are part of the Eagle Kids Club.

We’re Just Warming UpThis is only the beginning for the new Eagle Club. It’s going to be a busy, exciting year as we ascend to Division I – with many events and fundraisers planned. To keep up with the club and learn more, visit our website at NCCUEagleClub.com.

For more information, please call (919) 530-7057 or visit our website at www.NCCUEagleClub.com

ONE CLUB.ONE GOAL.

If you haven’t heard, there’s a new booster club at North Carolina Central University. It’s the all-new Eagle Club. Yes, more than a half-dozen of our athletic booster clubs, including the original long-standing Eagle Club, have joined forces to create a superpower club that provides scholarship support for all NCCU student-athletes. It’s an important step forward as we move up to Division I.

If you’re a previous booster club member, your past giving history will be recognized when you continue on with the new Eagle Club. For everyone who contributes, this is your chance to become a charter member of the new Eagle Club. As a member, you’ll be part of the only fundraising organization for the athletic department sanctioned by the university.

Next to student-athletes, our supporters are the most important assets to our athletic program. With your help, we’ll be able to offer more scholarships to the most talented student-athletes, as well as provide them with world-class facilities.

2010 NCCU Volleyball

The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) enters its 41st year of operation heading into the 2010-11 academic school year. The MEAC is made up of 13 outstanding historically black institutions across the Atlantic coastline: Bethune-Cookman University, Coppin State University, Delaware State University, Florida A&M University, Hampton University, Howard University, University of Maryland Eastern Shore, Morgan State University, Norfolk State University, North Carolina A&T State University, North Carolina Central University, Savannah State University and South Carolina State University.

HISTORYIn 1969, a bold ad hoc group of innovators long associated with intercollegiate athletics met in Durham, N.C., to discuss the feasibility of organizing a new conference. Dissected from these discussions, a steering and planning committee was formed to fully investigate the idea, present a detailed report with recommendations to interested collegiate institutions, and then construct a workshop to outline proposals.

After adopting a program, seven institutions (Delaware State College, Howard University, University of Maryland Eastern Shore, Morgan State University, North Carolina A&T State University, North Carolina Central University and South Carolina State College) agreed to become the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. Its major objective was to establish, organize and supervise an intercollegiate athletic program among a compact group of educational institutions of high academic standards and with a sound philosophy of co-curricular activities. The conference agreed to seek Division I status for its sports.

The conference was confirmed in 1970, kicking off its first season of competition in football in 1971.

In 1978, a milestone was reached when the MEAC selected Kenneth A. Free to be its first full-time commissioner. Free served the conference for 18 years before stepping down in May of 1996. In July of 1996, Charles S. Harris was named commissioner and served in the capacity until April 2002. On September 1, 2002, Dr. Dennis E. Thomas was named the commissioner and has served in the position for nine years.

The conference’s first expansion occurred in October 1979 when Bethune-Cookman College and Florida A&M University were voted into the MEAC as new members. Original members Morgan State, North Carolina Central and Maryland Eastern Shore withdrew from the conference at the end of the 1979-80 fiscal year. Maryland Eastern Shore was readmitted in 1981 and Morgan State returned in 1984. Florida A&M opted to resign in 1984 but rejoined the conference in 1986. Coppin State College was granted admittance in 1985, becoming the ninth member institution.

The MEAC expanded again in the 1990’s with the inclusion of Hampton University (1995) and Norfolk State University (1997). The conference expanded in 2007 adding Winston-Salem State University. Following the 2009-10 academic/athletic season Winston-Salem State withdrew from the conference and returned to Division II. On July 1, 2010 the MEAC made its final expansion with the admittance of North Carolina Central and Savannah State University.

On June 8, 1980, the MEAC was classified as a Division I conference by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Prior to that year the conference operated as a Division II conference. The following month the MEAC received an automatic qualification to the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship.

Currently, the conference has automatic qualifying bids for NCAA postseason play in baseball (since 1994), men’s basketball (since 1981), women’s basketball (since 1982), football (since 1996), softball (since 1995), men and women’s tennis (since 1998), and volleyball (since 1994).

The MEAC initiated cross country in 1980 and North Carolina A&T earned the inaugural men’s crown. The first women’s cross country championship took place a year later with Howard winning the first of its seven titles. Indoor Track and Field was also added in 1981 with South Carolina State capturing the men’s title and Howard winning the women’s crown.

Tennis and golf returned as MEAC governed sports in 1981, after a five-year hiatus. South Carolina State won all seven of the conference’s golf championships from 1972-1983 before the sport was discontinued after the 1983 championship.

Morgan State dominated the conference in wrestling winning 13 of 24 conference championships during the sports tenure (1972-1995).

Baseball, which began in 1972, was discontinued following the 1977 season. It was brought back as a MEAC governed sport along with women’s volleyball in 1983. Women’s softball became a MEAC sanctioned sport in 1992.

Bowling was officially sanctioned as a MEAC sport in 1999. Before that season, the MEAC was the first conference to secure NCAA sanctioning for women’s bowling by adopting the club sport prior to the 1996-97 school year.

2010 NCCU Volleyball

2009 Season Review

When the NCCU Eagles stepped on the hardwood for the 2009 season, they hoped to build a solid foundation for the future of NCCU volleyball, while building a winning tradition and becoming a true competitor both at the Division I level and among our conference foes. They settled for nothing more than hard work, dedication and commitment.

As the Eagles soared into their third year as a Division I program, they faced some challenges, experiencing ups and downs along the way. For a team with just two seniors, the Eagles used their talented youth as well as their competitiveness, willingness to win and commitment to perfection, to prevail. They finished the season with a satisfying 9-23 record, two more wins than the previous year and five less losses, just another footstep towards success.

Several Eagles earned postseason honors for the first time since NCCU was in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) and battling as a top Division II program. Along with postseason honors, NCCU had many student-athletes earn weekly and monthly honors due to their outstanding performances. Aside from postseason recognition, many Eagles found themselves as a part of NCCU history as they earned a spot in the record books.

NCCU participated in five tournaments to go along with a tough Division I schedule. During those tournaments, the Eagles had seven All-Tournament Team selections. And for the second consecutive year, NCCU took home second place at the NCCU Volleyball Tournament. Each accomplishment is one step closer to the ultimate goal: Division I Success.

make SenIor nIGht one to remember Seniors Avaniki Campbell and Aqiyla Gomez got to play their final match in an Eagle uniform on Monday, Nov. 16 inside McDougald-McLendon Gym against their arch rival North Carolina A&T. Having the Aggies on their home court for one last duel is all you can imagine as a senior at NCCU. It makes the game even sweeter. It means more than any other game in their career. Double-double performances from three Eagles lifted NCCU to a 3-1 victory over the Aggies, closing out the 2009 season and sending the seniors off with a memorable last match. Campbell and Gomez left NCCU as part of a legacy and left their footprints in the foundation for a better tomorrow and for the future of NCCU volleyball.

Chancellor Charlie Nelms

Chancellor Charlie Nelms assumed his duties as chancellor of North Carolina Central University August 1, 2007.

Prior to joining the NCCU family, Nelms served as vice president for Institutional Development and Student Affairs at Indiana University, which enrolls approximately 100,000 students on eight campuses. In his role as IU’s vice president for Institutional Development and Student Affairs, Nelms was responsible for a combination of duties on the Bloomington campus and systemwide that spanned university planning, institutional research and effectiveness, enrollment management, student affairs, academic support services, K-12 outreach initiatives, student retention, honors programs, and diversity and equity efforts. In September 2001, TIME magazine named IU’s Bloomington campus the number-one student-centered research university in the nation. Many of the programs cited by TIME were under Nelms’ oversight and direction.

A native of Crawfordsville, Arkansas, Nelms majored in agronomy and chemistry at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, graduating in 1968. He later earned a master’s degree in higher education and student affairs (1971) and a doctoral degree in higher education administration (1977) from Indiana University. Early in his career, he rose through the faculty and administrative ranks as associate dean for Student Development at Earlham College in Indiana (1973-1977), associate director of the Center for Human Development and Education Services at the UAPB (1977-1978), associate dean for Academic Affairs at Indiana University Northwest (1978-1984) and vice president for Student Services at Sinclair Community College in Ohio (1984- 1987).

In 1987, Nelms began a seven-year tenure as chancellor of Indiana University East, a commuter campus serving east-central Indiana. During his tenure there, the campus was the fastest-growing college in the State of Indiana. In 1994, Nelms was named chancellor of the University of Michigan at Flint (UMF), an urban campus that enrolls over 6,500 students and offers a full spectrum of undergraduate and master’s degree programs. Before being recruited to Indiana University in 1998, he resolved a significant campus budget deficit, reversed a four-year enrollment decline, and secured more than $75 million in private gifts to UMF.

A former American Council on Education Fellow and Ford Fellow, Nelms holds honorary degrees from Earlham College and the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. Over the course of his career, he has received numerous awards for his contributions

to education and service to students, including the Benjamin Hooks Award for Meritorious Achievement from the Gary (IN) branch of the NAACP, the Distinguished Alumni Service Award from Indiana University, the Distinguished Alumni Award from the IU School of Education, the President’s Medal from the University of Michigan, and the State of Indiana’s Sagamore of the Wabash—the highest civilian award bestowed by the governor.

Nelms is married to Jeanetta Sherrod Nelms. They have one son, Rashad, a graduate of the University of Michigan Law School who serves as a policy officer with the United Nations World Food Programme.

athletics Director Ingrid Wicker-McCree

Ingrid Wicker-McCree, Ed.D., was appointed as the Director of Athletics at North Carolina Central University on April 23, 2008 after holding the interim position for five months.

She officially began her new leadership role on May 1, 2008.

Wicker-McCree, who joined the rank of only a handful of women athletic directors in the UNC system, previously served as NCCU’s associate athletics director for internal affairs. She has served in a variety of leadership positions in both conference and national level organizations, most notably as president of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Executive Board from 2004-06, becoming only the second woman to ever hold that position in the league’s history. In addition, she served as a member of the NCAA’s Division II Legislation Committee from 2003-07.

In recognition of her work, Wicker-McCree received the CIAA Leadership Award for Service as president of the Executive Board and was named the CIAA Senior Woman Administrator of the Year in the spring of 2006.

Now entering her 16th year at NCCU, Wicker-McCree has been one of the driving forces behind NCCU’s reclassification to NCAA Division I. Since 1998, she has overseen the internal operations of the Athletics Department, including all compliance and eligibility programs.

Wicker-McCree began her career at NCCU as the head coach for women’s volleyball and softball. She became the first coach in NCCU history to win conference championships in multiple sports, capturing the school’s first-ever CIAA titles in softball (1998) and volleyball (1999, 2004, 2005). A three-time CIAA Volleyball Coach of the Year (1999, 2002, 2005) and former member of the NCAA Division II National Volleyball Committee, Wicker-McCree earned 239 match victories in 12 seasons as head volleyball coach at NCCU. She was also inducted into the NCCU Athletic Hall of Fame in 2004 as head coach of the 1998 softball team.

A native of Durham and a graduate of C.E. Jordan High School, Wicker-McCree played on two North Carolina high school state volleyball championship teams, while also lettering in basketball and track and field. She continued her volleyball playing career as a student-athlete at George

Washington University.

Wicker-McCree earned her undergraduate degree in criminal justice from George Washington University in 1989, and a master’s degree in recreation resources administration from North Carolina State University in December 1991. She also completed doctoral studies in higher education administration at North Carolina State University in June 2008.

She began her coaching career as a graduate assistant coach for the women’s volleyball program at N.C. State (1989-90). She then spent two seasons (1992-93) as head volleyball coach and student-athlete academic counselor at North Carolina A&T State University before returning to her hometown to begin her NCCU tenure in August 1994.

Wicker-McCree has been involved as a player and coach in the USA Volleyball Carolina Region. She also served as director of three USAV Junior Olympic Teams (ages 18, 16, 14 and under) and director of the Y.M.C.A. Middle School Girls’ Volleyball Camp (ages 10-14).

Wicker-McCree and her husband, Geno McCree, a three-sport collegiate student-athlete and 1991 graduate of Elon University, are the proud parents of Alexia (12), Quinton (9) and Sydney (6).

Nicholson joined the Eagle staff following an 11-month stint as the Assistant Director of Media Relations in the athletic department at The Citadel in Charleston, S.C., a NCAA Division I member of the Southern Conference. While on the Bulldog staff, Nicholson was the primary contact for volleyball and men’s basketball, while serving as the secondary contact for baseball.

She earned a master’s degree in journalism from the University of Memphis in May of 2008, where she served as a graduate assistant in the journalism department for two years. She is a member of Kappa Tau Alpha honor society and The National Scholar’s Honor Society.

2010 NCCU Volleyball

NCCU athleticsNorth Carolina Central University is competing in its third year of reclassification as an NCAA Division I institution (Football Championship Subdivision), and the Eagles will be playing as an independent during the 2008-09 athletics campaign.

Fourteen men’s and women’s sports teams participate in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) competition at the Division I-FCS level. Men’s intercollegiate teams include football, basketball, baseball, indoor and outdoor track & field, tennis, golf and cross country. Women’s intercollegiate teams include basketball, volleyball, indoor and outdoor track & field, tennis, softball, bowling and cross country.

NCCU’s athletic programs have enjoyed regional and national recognition for years, headlined by the 1989 NCAA Division II Men’s Basketball National Championship.

NCCU’s commitment to a balanced athletic program, providing equitable resources to all of its sports teams, is abundantly apparent. In five of the last eight years in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA), NCCU claimed the Loretta Taylor All-Sports Trophy, recognizing the top all-around women’s program in the conference.

In 2007-08, NCCU’s first season of Division I (FCS) competition, the women’s volleyball team kicked off the Division I era with a dramatic, come-from-behind win over N.C. State, then cruised to 21 victories, all against Division I opponents. The football team finished its first Division I season with a 6-4 record, the Eagles fourth straight winning season. The men’s and women’s cross country teams each won four of their seven events. The men’s basketball team played one of the toughest schedules in the country, while traveling more than 22,000 miles and playing in 13 different states. The squad earned a road victory over the eventual Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) champions and capped the season with a win over rival Winston-Salem State University at the MEAC Tournament. Finally, the track and field program won two events at the prestigious Penn Relays and qualified two student-athletes for the USA Indoor Track and Field Championships in Boston.

In 2006-07, NCCU’s final season in the NCAA Division II, the Eagles placed 24th in the final standings of the U.S. Sports Academy Directors’ Cup, the prestigious award presented annually to the best overall collegiate athletics programs in the country.

In 2006-07, NCCU won four CIAA team championships and participated in nine NCAA Division II Championship events.

Several former student-athletes and coaches are nationally and internationally known.

Heading the charge of the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games was Dr. LeRoy T. Walker, President of the U.S. Olympic Committee, who lifted the Eagle track & field program to international prominence during his unprecedented tenure as head coach at NCCU.

Under Walker’s reign, the Eagles produced 30 national titles, 77 All-Americans, and eight Olympic medalists. Legendary basketball practitioner, John B. McLendon, a member of the National Basketball Hall of Fame, established a remarkable record of 239-68 (.779) as an Eagle head coach from 1940 to 1952. A student of Dr. James Naismith, the inventor of the game of basketball, McLendon is credited with the development of the zone press, fast break and four corners offense.

Boston Celtics great Sam Jones, a

student-athlete under McLendon and a fellow Hall-of-Famer, became the first black player to be drafted in the first round after scoring a record 1,745 points during his stellar NCCU career.

Internationally-renowned artist, Ernie Barnes - best-known for his famous paintings seen on the 1970s sitcom “Good Times” - played football for the NCCU prior to a professional gridiron career with the Baltimore Colts, San Diego Chargers and Denver Broncos.

The LeRoy T. Walker Physical Education Complex houses a multi-purpose gymnasium, Olympic-sized swimming and diving pool, athletic training facilities, strength and fitness center, and much more.

O’Kelly-Riddick Stadium hosts NCCU football action for a capacity crowd of 10,000 dedicated Eagle fans. In mid-November, McLendon-McDougald Gym lights-up with men’s and women’s basketball excitement.

The 1989 men’s basketball team won the NCAA Division II National Championship by defeating Southeast Missouri State 73-46 in the title game on March 25, 1989. The Eagles also captured an NCAA Division II Regional Championship in 1993.

Legendary track & field coach Dr. LeRoy T. Walker, president of the U.S. Olympic Committee in 1996, led the Eagles to 30 national titles, 77 All-America citations, and eight Olympic medals.

NCCU Compliance

“Winning” for the Eagles is more than outscoring the opponent, it is excelling in the classroom, actively participating in community service projects and adhering to NCAA rules regarding recruitment and admission of student-athletes.

How can you help the Eagles win? follow the NCaa rules.

The NCAA defines an institution as the University, its employees, its student-athletes, and its representatives of athletics interests, including parents, alumnus and fans. Therefore beware of the following:

NCaa BYLaW 13.1.2.1

In Division I, representatives of an institution’s athletics interests are prohibited from making in-person, on- or off-campus recruiting contacts, including written and/or telephonic communications with a prospect or the prospect’s relatives or legal guardians.

A prospect is defined as any student who has started classes for the ninth grade, whether the student participates in athletics is not relevant to the classification as a prospect and neither is gender.

Written or telephonic communications includes email, instant messaging, paging, video conferencing, faxing and text messaging.

NCaa Bylaw 16.02.3

An extra benefit is any special arrangement by an institutional employee or a representative of the institution’s athletics interests to provide a student-athlete or the student-athlete’s relative or friend a benefit not expressly authorized by NCAA legislation.

Unless you are willing to give a benefit to all 8,000 students at NCCU, don’t give it to a student-athlete or a prospect.

The University

Since 1910, the mission of North Carolina Central University (NCCU) has been to prepare students academically and professionally to become leaders. NCCU is a comprehensive institution, which offers bachelor’s degrees in more than 100 fields of study and awards graduate degrees in an estimated 40 disciplines. The University has a state-of-the-art biotechnology research institute, which collaborates with pharmacy and biotech companies in the much-touted Research Triangle Park area, where NCCU is found. RTP is home to the largest pharmaceutical companies in the world – GSK (GlaxoSmithKline) and Merck.

With nearly 9,000 students enrolled, the historically black university is diverse. International studies and exchange programs attract exchange students from more than 12 countries, including Liberia, India, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Nepal,

China, the Czech Republic, Nigeria, South Korea, Russia, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, and South Africa.

Some programs are attracting students to NCCU, including the Institute for Homeland Security and Workforce Development, Biomanufacturing, Nursing, Education, Law, Business and Hospitality and Tourism.

Juniors, seniors and professors are encouraged to mentor incoming freshmen—“to help them adjust to college life.” More importantly is the university’s commitment to prepare and equip students with the knowledge and skill to compete in the global marketplace.

Through the scholarship and teaching of its faculty, and the many contributions to society of its alumni, NCCU seeks to fulfill its motto of “Truth and Service.”

North Carolina Central University is accredited by the Commission on

Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award baccalaureate and masters degrees.

UNIVERSITY MISSION

North Carolina Central University is a comprehensive university offering programs at the baccalaureate, master’s, and selected professional levels. It is the nation’s first public liberal arts institution founded for African-Americans. The university upholds a strong liberal arts tradition and a commitment to academic excellence in a diverse educational and cultural environment. It seeks to encourage intellectual productivity and to increase the academic and professional skills of its students and faculty.

The mission of the university is to prepare students academically and professionally

to become leaders prepared to advance the consciousness of social responsibility in a diverse, global society. The university will serve its traditional clientele of African-American students; it will also expand its commitment to meet the educational needs of a student body that is diverse in race and other socioeconomic qualities.

Teaching, supported by research, is the primary focus of the university. As a part of that focus, the university encourages its faculty to pursue intellectual development and rewards effective teaching and research. The university recognizes, however, the mutually reinforcing impact of scholarship and service on effective teaching and learning. North Carolina Central University, therefore, encourages and expects faculty and students to engage in scholarly, creative, and service activities, which benefit the community.
