In the days following his hiring as the Tigers’ head coach in early April of 2009, Josh Pastner trav-eled around the city of Memphis and talked about all the positives of the basketball program on every media outlet. And Tiger Nation was buy-ing into it — or as much as their hearts would allow. It was a reserved enthusiasm and cautious optimism from the fans. Sure, Tiger Nation wanted to jump in with both feet from the start, but there were too many questions. “How are we going to re-place four starters from the 2008-09 team?” “How are we going to keep the run of success going after los-ing nearly the entire 2009 recruit-ing class?” “And did we just hire a then 31-year-old assistant coach to lead our basketball program?” Those and many other ques-tions, though, didn’t deter Pastner. He kept pounding the pavement with his message of positivity for the pro-gram, university and city, and it became infectious. Fast-forward to a year later, and Tiger fans are do-ing back-fl ips down Beale State about the job Pastner has done and continues to do. Furthermore, there are few doubts — if any at all — that Memphis made an extremely wise decision when it hired the now 32-year-old Pastner to be the 17th head coach in the basketball program’s history. What Pastner has done, against over-whelming odds, in a little over a year since his hiring is nothing short of remarkable, and the following lists a few of his fi rst-year accomplishments: • Rallied Tiger Nation to attend the most memora-

ble Memphis Madness in school history as a record overfl ow crowd of 18,500-plus packed FedExFo-rum to watch the Tigers tip off preseason drills

• Signed the nation’s No. 1 recruiting class for 2010 before coaching his fi rst collegiate game

• Directed the Tigers to a 24-10 overall record, the program’s 10th-straight, 20-win campaign

• Guided Memphis to a 13-3 Conference USA mark and a second-place fi nish in the league’s regular season standings

• Led the Tigers to a National Invitation Tourna-ment appearance, the program’s 10th-straight post-season berth

• Coached Memphis to an NIT fi rst-round win over St. John’s, marking the seventh-consecutive year the program recorded at least one postseason win

For his efforts, Pastner was named Conference USA Coach of the Year by both The Sporting News and collegeinsider.com. His 24 wins were the third-most among fi rst-year head coaches in NCAA Division I in 2009-10 (VCU’s Shaka Smart with 27; Xavier’s Chris

Mack with 26), and Pastner was one of two fi rst-year head coaches in the nation to lead their squads to the NCAA Tournament or NIT. The 24 victories were the third-most by a fi rst-year head coach in Tiger hoops history (Finch with 26 in 1986-87; Lambert with 25 in 1951-52), and the 13 C-USA wins were the most con-ference victories by a Memphis fi rst-year mentor. The above-mentioned accomplishments, though, aren’t the norm when a college basketball program un-dergoes a major coaching transition. The usual scenario involves a rebuilding plan of 3-to-4 years at the least.

However, Pastner said he didn’t want the Tiger program to suffer any “slippage” and fall off the na-tional scene. Tiger Nation doesn’t have to worry about that happen-ing any time soon with Pastner at the controls. In addition to one of college basketball’s top recruiting class for 2010-11, Pastner returns a sol-id nucleus of upperclassmen that showed vast improvement from start-to-fi nish last year. And, the national media has taken notice, as many early top-25 polls for the 2010-11 campaign have the Tigers a consensus top-15 squad. In fact, a couple of the polls have Memphis in the top-10, and one as high as No. 4 in the country.

But, Tiger Nation should have expected this suc-cess as soon as Pastner was hired when looking at his impressive resume. Pastner’s resume began with having already coached nine NBA Draft lottery picks before taking his fi rst head coach position. In only season as an as-sistant at Memphis, Pastner worked with Tyreke Evans. As an assistant at Arizona, Pastner helped develop the games of Jordan Hill, Channing Frye, Jarryd Bayless, Andre Iguodala, Richard Jefferson and Mike Bibby at Arizona. Then, as the head coach of the Houston Hoops summer league team, Pastner mentored Emeka Okafor and T.J. Ford.

Pastner’s impressive credentials, though, doesn’t end there. He won an NCAA title as a player at Arizona (1997), and also made a trip to the NCAA champion-ship game while on the Wildcats’ staff (2001). As an assistant coach from 2003-09 (six years at Arizona, one year at Memphis), Pastner’s teams advanced to four NCAA Sweet Sixteens and two Elite Eights. In fact, Pastner participated in the NCAA Tournament 13-straight years from 1997-2009. Pastner came to Memphis as an assistant coach in May 2008, and in only his fi rst season as an assistant on the staff in 2008-09, he helped the Tigers maintain their rarefi ed status among college hoops elite. Memphis continued its magical ride with a 33-4 overall record and another perfect 16-0 mark in the Conference USA regular season — the program’s third-straight year of perfection in league play. The Tigers entered the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 on a school-record 27-game win streak, which was also the longest in the nation in 2008-09. The NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 appearance was the program’s fourth straight, tying a school mark. Memphis made it another sweep of the C-USA crowns, winning the league’s tournament for a fourth-consecutive season. The Tigers also jumped into the top fi ve of both national polls, reaching as high as the No. 2 spot. Memphis fi nished the regular season ranked No. 3 in the fi nal Associated Press poll and No. 2 in the ESPN/USA Today poll. Olson’s staff at the University of Arizona. From 2003-08, Arizona averaged nearly 23 wins per season (137-60 record; .695 winning percentage), captured two Pac-10 regular season championships (2003, 2005) and advanced to two NCAA Tournament regional fi nals (2003, 2005). The Wildcats earned NCAA Tournament berths in each of Pastner’s six seasons as an assistant coach. Pastner, who was with the Arizona program as a player, administrator and coach since 1996, was a key cog in the Wildcats’ recruiting efforts and working with the program’s big men. In his six seasons as an assistant in Tucson, Past-ner’s tireless efforts on the recruiting trail paid big divi-dends, as the Wildcats continued to successfully recruit top-notch student-athletes. Arizona’s recruiting classes were among the best nationally in each of his six sea-sons as an assistant. In June of 2005, Rivals.com’s Chris Wallace named Pastner one of college basketball’s top 25 recruiters, writing, “Any list of top recruiters must include Pastner.” In May 2008, FoxSports.com rated Pastner as the No. 7 high-major recruiter in the country. And just prior to taking the Memphis head coach posi-tion, Basketball Times named Pastner the No. 5 assis-tant coach in the country in the publication’s April 2009 issue. During his time at Arizona, Pastner was also in-volved in a wealth of charitable organizations, includ-ing the Boys and Girls Clubs of Tucson, Boy Scouts of America, Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Naval Special Warfare Foundation, Special Olympics and various local law enforcement support groups to name a few. His charitable efforts got him named to the Tucson Business Edge’s “40 Under 40” list for 2007. The honor recognizes local business leaders under 40 years of age. The annual list not only recognizes recipients for pro-fessional success, but community involvement, public service and participation in trade groups or professional organizations. Pastner played in 42 games as a Wildcat and fi n-ished his career with an average of 0.9 ppg. The Wild-cats were 42-0 in the games in which he appeared. Despite his lack of playing time, Pastner’s pres-ence in the Arizona program was invaluable, perform-ing many of the small “behind-the-scenes” things that helped the team win the 1997 NCAA championship and two Pac-10 titles (1998, 2000) during his career. Pastner helped break down game tapes and scout opponents, and he was the shot specialist for many of the Wildcat players. In his 12 overall years with the program, Ari-zona had a 290-103 record (.738 winning percentage). Pastner earned his bachelor’s degree in Family Studies from Arizona in December 1998, two-and-a-half years after enrolling, the fastest an Arizona student-athlete has ever earned a degree. He fi nished his mas-ter’s in Teaching and Teacher Education in December 1999 before beginning work on his doctorate. In his role as an undergraduate assistant in 2000-01, Pastner began pursuit of another undergraduate degree. Despite taking as many as 33 units a semester while at Arizona, Pastner maintained a high grade-point average, was nominated for the CoSIDA/GTE Aca-demic All-America team and was named to the Aca-demic All-Pac-10 second team as a senior in 2000. On May, 16, 2009, Pastner married the former Kerri Lamas, and the couple resides in Memphis. Past-ner has a stepson, Ethan. The couple have a daughter, Payten Sydney, who was born May, 27, 2010.
