Behavioral Health / 2 East
The Behavioral Health Unit offers a multi-faceted approach to providing inpatient mental health treatment. Treatment begins with an evaluation of behavioral health needs via a trained staff of nurses, social workers, psychiatrists, and other mental health profession-als. Therapy includes individual and group counseling, family meetings, medication evalu-ation and adjustments; daily psychiatrist visits, electroconvulsive therapy, crisis interven-tion, and disease education.
Admissions accepted 24 hours a day, 7 days a week
24-Hour Crisis Hotline available toll-free 1-800-339-5209
Cardiac Rehabilitation
Cardiac rehabilitation is a comprehensive, individualized program of exercise and educa-tion to assist patients in recovering from a cardiac event and to help them lead a healthier and safer lifestyle. It is designed especially for people who have experienced a heart attack, coronary bypass surgery, angina, congestive heart failure, or valve surgery.
Mon-Wed-Fri. from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
716-375-6224
Cardiopulmonary Services
Most Cardiopulmonary Services are available 24-hours a day for inpatients. Outpatients may schedule through Central Scheduling weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Some weekend appointments are also available. Department Phone # 716-375-6220
Electrocardiograms (EKGs): An EKG is a test that records electrical signals from your heart onto a paper strip. The pat-tern of these signals can help tell the doctor whether your heart is normal, under stress, or experiencing electrical problems, strain, or damage.
Electroencephalograms (EEG): An EEG is a test that measures brain wave activity. It is used to assess brain function. Doctors may order this test to check for seizures or other brain problems. For this test, small metal disks (electrodes) are attached to the scalp with water-based gel or paste. During the test, wavy lines (waveforms) appear on a screen or on paper and a physician studies them to assess brain function.
Cardiac Stress Testing: A cardiac stress test provides more information than routine exercise stress tests, helping doctors recognize which patients are at an increased risk for a heart attack or are candi-dates for procedures such as angiography, angioplasty and heart surgery. The test can identify areas of the heart muscle that have an inadequate blood supply, provide informa-tion about the heart’s pumping function, and determine the amount of scarring from a heart attack.
2008 Physician Directory and Services Guide • www.ogh.org • Page 14
Echocardiography: An echocardiogram (echo) is an imaging test that helps the doctor evaluate the heart. A transducer device that looks like a microphone is used to bounce harmless sound waves (ultrasound) off the heart. It helps show the size of your heart and the health of the heart’s chambers and valves. Olean General Hospital is the only facility in the area to offer 3D echos as a way of producing the highest quality images and giving the cardiologist the best view of the heart and valves.
Transesophageal Echocardiography (TEE): A TEE is a test that allows your doctor to record images of the heart from inside the esophagus, or food pipe. These images help the doctor identify and treat problems such as infection, disease, or defects in the heart’s walls or valves.
Pulmonary Function Testing (PFTs): Pulmonary function tests (also called lung function tests) help measure how well the lungs are working. The tests measure the amount of air a patient breathes out (exhales) and how long it takes for the patient to exhale completely. These tests are performed to diagnose lung conditions such as asthma and COPD. They may be done before and after taking certain medications. They may also be used to find out whether shortness of breath gets worse with exercise. Bronchoscopy: A bronchoscopy is an exam used to help diagnose lung problems. A thin, flexible tube called a bronchoscope - with a special light and tiny camera attached - is used to view the breathing passages. This procedure can be used to diagnose a variety of medical diseases and conditions from tuberculosis to cancer.
The Sleep Disorder Center
The most important aspect of diagnosing and treating a sleep disorder is by properlyevaluating a patient in a quiet, relaxed, natural sleep environment. The Sleep Disorder Center is located in the Hampton Inn in Olean which allows it to offer all the amenities of a luxurious hotel stay, coupled with state-of-the-art observation and testing equipment. Ad-ditionally all sleep studies are read by board-certified sleep physicians. 716-373-9301 for consultation, or 373-9300 to schedule.

Diabetes Education
For questions about Diabetes Education programs, call 716-375-4127. The Diet Hotline is 716-375-6270
The Outpatient Diabetes Education Program has been continuously awarded the Ameri-can Diabetes Association Recognition status since 1993. The program and faculty can help patients gain the skills and knowledge necessary to lead a happy and healthy life with diabetes. The Outpatient Program consists of a 10-hour workshop divided between three classes and an individual assessment appointment with Certified Diabetes Education Nurse or Registered Dietitian. Individualized counseling is also available for those who have spe-
cific needs.
Inpatient Diabetes Education is also offered. The Diabetes Education faculty is available for consults and educational needs. Specific “survival skills” such as monitoring blood glucose or meal planning can be taught in the hospital setting.
Diabetes Support Group meetings are free to anyone in the community. The group meets the third Tuesday of every month, 6:30-7:30 PM, except December. At each meeting, a speaker presents a topic of interest to persons with diabetes.
Medical Nutrition Therapy is offered for those who have specific meal planning needs. Meal planning is a cornerstone in the proper management of diabetes.
Dialysis
The Marie Lorenz Dialysis Center at Olean General Hospital provides care to patients with chronic kidney disease. Dialysis is a treatment to remove waste and excess fluid from the blood. Patients receive dialysis treatments 3 times per week for 3-4 hours.

The Diagnostic Imaging Department is fully accredited by the American College of Radiology.
Abdominal UltrasoundAbdominal ultrasound is an imaging test that uses sound waves to form pictures of the abdominal organs. It can help detect organ problems such as gallstones, kidney stones, or liver disease.
Bone Density StudyA bone density study helps diagnose osteoporosis (bone thinning). Scans of the lower back, hip, or forearm are taken to measure the amount of calcium (density) in the bones.
Computed Tomography (64-slice CT)A CT scan is a test that combines x-rays and computer scans. The result is a detailed picture that can show problems with soft tissues (such as the lining of the sinuses), organs (such as the kidneys or lungs), and bones. During the test, patients lie on a table that slides them into the scanner. They may be given contrast through an intravenous (IV)

line or by injection, and be asked to hold their breath for a few seconds during the scan. OGH uses a 64-slice CT scanner which offers unsurpassed image quality and some of the fastest scan times available to maximize patient comfort.
Computer Tomography Angiography (CTA) CTA creates images of arteries throughout the body by using a CT scanner. A contrast medium (x-ray dye) is injected to make the blood vessels stand out, while pictures are taken with the CT scanner. The CT images are processed by a computer to make a three-dimensional view that is read by a radiologist and cardiologist. CTAs may be used to examine arteries in the abdomen, neck, lungs, pelvis, kidneys, or brain; to look for an aneurysm (ballooning of the blood vessel wall) or dissection (tear); to see whether a stent (device used to keep an artery open) is working properly; to detect damage to arteries due to injuries, or to gather details on blood vessels that supply tumors.
Lower GI Tract X-ray (Lower GI)A Lower GI test is an x-ray examination of the large intestine, also known as the colon. This includes the right or ascending colon, the transverse colon, the left or descending colon and the rectum. The appendix and a portion of the small intestine may also be included
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (Wide Bore Open MRI)An MRI is a test that lets the doctor see detailed pictures of the inside of the body. An MRI combines the use of strong magnets and radio waves to form an MRI image. Be-cause of the strength of the magnet, patients need to remove all jewelry or metal before entering the MRI suite. Patients may be given contrast through an intravenous (IV) line or by injection to help with obtaining the highest quality images. OGH utilizes the Espree Wide Bore Open MRI to accommodate patients of any size while decreasing scan times and providing the most detailed images available from any scanner.
MammographyMammography is an x-ray exam of breast tissue. The image produced is called a mammogram. A mammogram can help detect problems with the breasts such as cysts or cancer. In the event of a positive mammogram result, OGH offers ultrasound and stereotactic breast biopsies to determine whether a lump is cancerous. A stereotactic biopsy is much less invasive than other biopsies and uses a thin needle to extract tissue samples for analysis.
Nuclear MedicineA nuclear medicine scan uses a special camera to create pictures of internal organs (such as the heart, lungs, liver, and gallbladder) as well as bones. This test uses a small amount of radioactive material and a special camera. Patients lie on a narrow table and the camera is placed close to the body. Patients may be asked to lie very still to ensure the highest quality images.
X-RayAn x-ray uses a small amount of radiation to create images of the bones and internal or-gans. X-rays are most often used to detect bone or joint problems, or to check the heart and lungs (chest x-ray).
