GULLIVER SCHOOLS 2008-2009ANNUAL REPORTof GIVING

It is with a true sense of joy and pride that we publish this year’s Annual Report of Giving. We do this while celebrating the Gulliver Schools’ student body for both academic excellence and success that encompasses so many areas beyond the classroom.

There were many achievements to celebrate this past year. Collectively, our graduating class earned more than $8 million dollars in scholarships, and five of our seniors were recognized as National Merit Scholars by their respective college or university. Our high school students received 6 top scores in the Fairchild Challenge, an environmental educational outreach program designed to promote environmental awareness, scholarship, and stewardship in youth. In addition, our top-ranked middle school chess team brought home a seventh state championship.

For the th consecutive year, the Miami Herald named Gulliver the Best Small School for Athletics. The boys’ high school tennis team won its third consecutive state championship, the football team also made it to the state championship for a shot at their second state title and the boys’ middle school basketball team finished the season undefeated. Additionally, both our middle and high school dance teams won the National Contest of Champions. We enjoyed spectacular theatre productions, including A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Once Upon a Mattress, and Shadowbox, by our middle and high school theatre students, the latter who also received Critics’ Choice Awards at the 2009 Individual Events Thespian Competition. Students from the Prep’s String and Vocal Ensembles competed in the Florida Orchestra Association and Florida Vocal Association’s District Solo & Ensemble Festival, earning 40 superior ratings, and our Middle School Jazz Band won the Grand National Award for the 2008-2009 academic year.

Our “green” initiatives have been successfully integrated into campus life, and 2009-200 promises even more advances as we increase our use of digital media to disseminate information to the Gulliver community.

I am also very proud to report that while operating in a very uncertain economic climate, we rallied together and raised a remarkable amount of money for Gulliver projects and its students. Generosity in annual giving increased, reaching over $2 million dollars. The inaugural year of the school’s Annual Fund also achieved unprecedented success. The 2008-2009 Annual Fund Drive generated over $400,000, more than $00,000 over the set goal.

In addition, we received substantial investments in our capital projects to enhance and improve our facilities. Because of our capital project support, we now have a state-of-the-art athletic field and weight room and are looking forward to the opening of the Aquatic Center at the Prep in January 200. And, in February, we graciously accepted a $ million dollar lead pledge for the new Library/Media Center at the Prep Campus, which has an estimated total cost of $ million dollars. We continue to foster relationships with donors in an effort to raise the additional funds necessary to break ground.

As you know, gifts from our parents, faculty, alumni, and friends immediately enhance the everyday lives of students and are an essential part of their success. Every dollar raised goes directly toward our programs and services, supporting virtually every aspect of the Gulliver Schools experience. Your kindness, along with some other highlights showcasing your dollars at work over the past several years, is documented throughout this Annual Report of Giving 2008-2009.

I hope you enjoy reading this report as much as we enjoyed living it. Your generosity has positively impacted the lives of our students, evident in their many accomplishments. Thank you for believing in our academic community and for working diligently to advance our efforts.

An endowment is unique in that it establishes a permanent fund, which provides perpetual, annual support for Gulliver Schools. As an endowment fund donor, you may decide to designate your gift to one of our established endowments or inquire about initiating a new one.

Your gift to establish an endowment creates a lasting legacy in your name or in the name of someone you wish to honor or memorialize. The initial gift of $2,000 or more will never be touched, and since it is invested, it will grow each year. Only interest income from the endowment will be used for the purpose you designate.

Donor Dollars at Work

Annual Fund and Annual Giving Donor Dollars at WorkDespite the uncertain economic climate, Gulliver has stood strong and continued to build on its tradition of excellence. As the benefactor of your generosity, a myriad of school wide projects have been made possible. This year, hundreds of thousands of dollars in donations were put directly to work at Gulliver Schools, as one hundred percent of all donated funds are invested directly into the school to benefit our students. Donors’ gifts support carefully-selected programs and initiatives that help students succeed. Below is a sample of how our 2008-2009 annual fund and annual giving donors are helping enhance student life.

Financial Aid for families and students in need

Upgrades and installation of new classroom technology (wiring, SMART Boards, document cameras, computers)

Beautification of atrium, A Drive, and garden area at the Academy Campus including a new drainage system and electrical conduits

Underwriting costs associated with state competition for the dance team

Acquisition of new equipment for weight room/training room

Installation of new drama lighting grid at the Preparatory Campus

Additional academic program support for band, engineering, biomedical sciences, math, etc.

TECI DOLLARS

SPOTLIGHT ON TECI DOLLARSThe Technology Enhanced Classroom Initiative, commonly known as TECI, has been underway since January 2006. The initiative came about as a result of the ongoing research and evaluation conducted by Gulliver’s Technology Department. As the technology products under review began to yield concrete documented results of the benefits the technology provides to students, a plan was set forth to bring these new tools to all Gulliver students.

TECI equipment typically consists of an interactive Board (SMART Board), ceiling projector, laptop, podium cart, DVD, VCR, document camera, and control box (box located on wall providing teacher ability to switch from one device to another). Prior to placing the equipment, a classroom must be made “TECI Ready”. Some of our classrooms must have certain items upgraded prior to being able to install the TECI equipment. In certain cases, the internal components of a classroom must be removed and upgraded prior to any installation. This ensures that the electrical system and other classroom components are in line to support the new equipment.

Across campus, traditional dry erase boards are being traded in for this new state-of-the-art technology. Mounted on a wall, SMART Boards are interactive electronic whiteboards that utilize a data projector to display output from a computer. These boards are touch-sensitive so a user can write with a finger or stylus, enabling live onscreen manipulation in much of the same way as a computer touch screen feature works. One teacher describes the SMART Board as “one piece of technology with the potential to have the greatest positive impact in education of any technology that has come along in recent years.” J. T. Cook, ‘09, says, “Some schools are reluctant to try something new, but Gulliver is not. It’s taken a leap forward with the use of SMART Boards...” Having these as a tool in the classroom allows teachers to incorporate audio, video, animation and interactive activities into their instruction and provides support for a diverse variety of student learning styles. The SMART Board also allows them to utilize the wealth of resources available on the Internet for incorporation into lessons plans.

In just three years, with cross departmental collaboration between the Advancement Office, the Technology Department, and Administration, over 00 classrooms have been upgraded with the new technology with funds totaling more than $80,000. The majority of TECI funding has been made possible by generous donations from parents, alumni and faculty, sponsorships from area businesses, fundraising events and activities, grant awards as well as through allocated general operational dollars from the school, all of which are a true testament to the belief in the mission of Gulliver.

The efforts to educate and encourage new donors to support the initiative continue today, as the need is still great. We rely on the generosity of our parents, faculty and alumni to keep the momentum going, bringing new technology to all Gulliver classrooms. For more information about TECI, contact the Office of Advancement at 786.709.408 or email [email protected].

The Bricks for the Future CampaignEach year, Gulliver invites its parents, faculty and alumni, to make their permanent mark on campus through personalizing an engraved brick. We would like to thank the donors of the 2008-2009 Bricks for the Future Campaign who purchased a brick to celebrate and honor a special time, person or occasion in their life. These bricks become part of our beautiful atrium and breezeway areas that students see every time that they walk through campus.

The Bricks for the Future Campaign is an important facet of Gulliver’s advancement efforts as it serves dual purposes. First, it helps in beautifying our campuses and second, it offers visual testaments of our benefactors belief in the school’s mission. Proceeds from the purchase of bricks support the Annual Fund. Annual Fund gifts go to work immediately, helping all students and because these gifts are unrestricted, they can be used where they are needed most. Annual Fund dollars are raised and spent in the same year.

It is not too late to leave your mark on Gulliver Schools and become part of this very special legacy. Please go to www.gulliverschools.org to place your custom brick order online. For more information, visit our website at www.gulliverschools.org or contact the Office of Advancement at 786.709.408 or email [email protected].

The Bricks for the Future Campaign helps pave the way for Gulliver to continue providing a superior educational experience for our students.

Annual Holiday Marketplace*December 4, 2008

The Holiday Marketplace celebrated a successful 0th season, generating over $,000 in support of Gulliver Schools’ Annual Fund. Parents, students, faculty, and staff enjoyed an afternoon of fun strolling through the Academy Campus under the white canopies while shopping for unique gifts and participating in a variety of holiday activities. Thank you to all of our attendees, and especially to our twenty plus vendors for your ongoing support of our mission.

The Holiday Marketplace has taken a hiatus for 2009 as our parents are hard at work preparing for another successful Children’s International Holiday Workshop and launching a new Tennis Tournament and Signature Event. For more information on how you can get involved in a future Holiday Marketplace and other exciting special events, please contact your campus’ Parents’ Association Liason.

Capital Projects

Gulliver Schools has numerous major building and capital projects in progress, along with many proposed projects designed to complement and enhance the exceptional educational experience our students receive.

The direction and timeline for completion of our major building projects is currently donor driven, with a goal of raising a minimum of 7 percent of the required funds prior to commencing a project. We depend on fundraising to support construction costs

associated with capital projects in addition to expenditures beyond general operations.

Many of our capital donations are received in the form of a pledge in which donation payments are spread over multiple years. Several naming opportunities exist for projects that have been proposed, are in progress, or have been completed. For more information, contact the Office of Advancement at 786.709.408 or email [email protected].
