NOVA is committed to ensuring that students have the opportunity to participate in

extracurricular activities not only at the campus level, but at the College-level as well.

While students have the opportunity to participate in numerous activities and events at

the campus of preference, the College has established a College-wide program to ensure

students can participate and represent the College at large.

Purpose

College-wide programming was established to foster a sense of community within the

institution. College-wide engagement aligns with NOVA's mission of “responding to the

educational needs of its dynamic and diverse community through an array of

comprehensive programs and services that

facilitate learning and workforce development

in an environment of open access and through

lifelong educational opportunities.”

Well administered programming will be

beneficial to the student’s overall educational

experience aiding in the retention and academic

success of students. College-wide activities

shall be dynamic, accessible and high quality and

directed at keeping the needs of the students at

the center of the decision-making process. The

programming shall serve as a means by which

students, faculty, and staff can be brought

together in a spirit creating a typical collegiate

environment.

What are College-wide Student Activities?

College-wide programs are events and activities

that are closely aligned to the institution’s overall

identity. The student newspaper, intercollegiate

athletics, club sports, and large public events such as NOVA Idol are examples of College-

wide Student Activities. In addition, the College-wide Student Activities Office may

coordinate large events and/or recognition ceremonies that bring the NOVA student

body together. The College-wide Activities Office may also serve as a clearinghouse to

assist in the overall marketing and promotion of the various campus student activities

offices’ events and programs that may be of value to the general student population, such

as guest speakers and cultural events, but may be unique to a specific campus.

Leadership Development $16,500.00 Two events highlighted NOVA’s commitment to developing student

leadership. In September, 50 students participated in the student

government leadership retreat at Camp Friendship in Palmyra,

Virginia for a three day gathering. In November, 60 students

traveled to Richmond for the VCCS Student Leadership

Conference. NOVA’s students mingled with over 400 of their

peers from the state’s 23 community colleges. They learned

effective leadership strategies, professional business etiquette, and

communication skills.

Students from all six campuses participated in the Student Leadership

Retreat. Above, students waited in line for a trip across the ropes

course.

Student Newspaper $10,000.00 The student newspaper produced four issues in the Spring while evolving from a campus to a

College-wide media. The paper adopted the name NOVA Fortnightly with the goal of printing a

new edition every 14 days. The tabloid sized paper was student produced with numerous

color pages. The content was campus and community oriented with information relevant to

students. Reporters covered numerous activities and events including NOVA Idol, information

about NOVAcards, student art shows, local cultural events, and athletic events.

Athletics and Club Sports $110,000.00* For the first time in College history, the athletic programs have transitioned to a central

leadership position. Men’s and women’s basketball represented the College well in the

VCCS regular season and in post-season competition. The women’s team was named co

-champions of the VCCS regular season and the men’s team was the regular season

champion. In addition, the men were runners-up champions in the VCCS tournament in

Hampton, Virginia. Six students will continue their academic and athletic careers at four-

year institutions, with three earning athletic scholarships. The hockey team is now an

established member of the American Collegiate Hockey Association winning several

games this year against both two-year and four-year colleges. The program’s inaugural

win came against James Madison University. In 2009-10, ice

hockey will be eligible for ACHA post-season play. Men’s

soccer and women’s volleyball each participated in local

recreation leagues. In addition, a College-wide end of year athletic banquet was

established. A College-wide intramural activity, a par-three golf tournament, was

held in June with representatives from four campuses.

NOVA Celebrates Student Success $11,000.00 It was “A Night Among the Stars” and Northern Virginia Community College’s

brightest were honored at the Who’s Who Among Students in America’s Junior Colleges

banquet on Friday, April 10 at the Ernst Cultural Center Forum on the Annandale Campus.

Fifty-one students, from all six campuses, were recognized with the “Who’s Who”

honor based on academic standings, campus leadership, participation in extra-curricular

activities and community service above the norm.

Kemper Steele, Coordinator for Student Life at J. Sargeant Reynolds Community

College, was the evening’s guest speaker, telling the campus leaders to stay on target in

pursuit of ambitions and not get distracted by obstacles out of their control.

In addition, Edward Sawyer and Agnieszka Spryzynska were announced as finalists for

the Jack Kent Cooke Scholarship by the NVCC Educational Foundation and presented with

a $500 scholarship.

recipient of the 2009 Jack Kent Cooke

Scholarship, is congratulated by Bonnie Idle

of the NVCC Educational Foundation.

NOVA Idol $49,000.00 NOVA Idol, the College’s annual talent showcase, welcomed nearly 800 spectators to the Schlesinger

Center. The event was the culmination of campus performances in the quest to find the best singing

sensation at NOVA. The finale featured 15 NOVA students and four high school performers in separate

competitions. Susan Bilodeau was the winner in 2009. The event was broadcast on a tape delay basis

on NOVA’s cable access channel across most of Northern Virginia communities. Professional musicians,

local celebrities, NOVA’s Board Chair Greg Schuckman, and Alexandria’s SGA President Chris

Mastromarino served as judges for the event.

Campus NOVA Days will be on different days of the week to assist in enhancing the marketing

and communication efforts the event provides. College departments will now be able attend

most if not all of the events to promote programs and services important to students.

The College’s Student Leadership Conference will be a one-day event (Friday, September 25)

hosted at George Mason University’s Prince William Campus. The event will target specific

learning outcomes aimed at developing students into campus leaders.

A weekly email will be distributed every Monday during the Fall and Spring terms to give

students information about all the various student activities for the week ahead. The email

may also include a Club and Organization Spotlight and other important College information.

NOVA Student Activities Coordinators are meeting with George Mason University, University

Life to discuss best practices and explore possible collaboration between the two regional

institutions. The event is slated for Friday, August 7 at GMU’s Prince William Campus.

Women’s volleyball and men’s soccer are transitioning from recreational competition to an

abbreviated intercollegiate schedule. Ice hockey will be a full member of the American

Collegiate Hockey Association and eligible for post-season play in 2009-10.
