2006-2007 SOCIETY UPDATE

Message from Past President Alex Prodanovic, CFA

It has been an honour and pleasure to serve as President of CFA Vancouver and I am excited about the future. CFA Vancouver is in a strong financial position and has great leadership in the Board of Directors who are in the process of creating a strategic plan based on the results of our recent membership survey. Our membership continues to grow and is becoming very diverse. Today we have over 1,000 CFA Vancouver members and had over 800 candidates registered for the June 2007 examinations.

Board members worked especially hard on their portfolios, and I would like to highlight their efforts:

Under the guidance of CFA Vancouver’s Treasurer, Adam Pion, the financial results for the fiscal year ending 2007 continue to reflect positive results.

Jeffrey Porter was instrumental in assisting candidates and members with their applications and addressing related questions. The growth in membership is exciting yet challenging, as the Board continues to evolve and develop programs to meet the various needs and interests.

Miika Makela and Kenneth Trider, along with their volunteers, put together a very successful 2006/2007 programming season, delivering over 20 events and hosting six luncheons on behalf of our members, representing 18 hours of PD credits. Our Society is proud to be partnering with the CFA Institute in assisting members with the administrative tracking of the voluntary Professional Development (PD) Program.

Catherine Heath, Vice-President, and her planning committee organized the 29th Annual CFA Vancouver Forecast Dinner. The event included three industry-leading professionals, Jeremy Grantham (GMO), James Paulsen (Wells Capital Management) and Martin Barnes (Bank Credit Analyst) and was attended by 425 members and guests.

Rob Edel organized and hosted the annual Candidate Reception and 4th Annual Charter Awards Ceremony where we recognized 30 new CFA Charterholders. The Board extended our exclusive agreement with prep course provider Stalla/Becker in providing Candidates with a structured and disciplined study program. Derek Yee supported CFA Vancouver’s public awareness activities within the local universities and the BC Portfolio Management Competition. Competition, a program designed to support local University and College students as they learn about the risks and rewards of investing in the capital markets.

This year the Board allocated significant resources to increase public awareness of the CFA Charter. Lisa Dempsey was very active with local initiatives and worked together with our fellow Canadian Socie-ties in establishing a top-down Canadian Public Awareness initiative. Under the leadership of Beth Ham-ilton-Keen (President’s Council Representative) and Maury Donen (President, CFA Winnipeg), the Ca-nadian Regions created and implemented a strategic plan to increase the awareness of the CFA Char-ter with a focus on the allied professional communities. In recognition of our efforts, the CFA Institute awarded the Canadian Region the “Collaboration Award” in the Society Excellence Award Programs and a monetary gift of $12,000 to be used in national marketing initiatives. Donna Jones, Past-President, was instrumental in organizing CFA Day and CFA Vancouver’s participa-tion in the UBC/SFU Career Fair. These events generated very positive feedback and provided us with a great opportunity to raise awareness of the CFA Charter. Ian Robertson has worked tirelessly with the CFA Institute in planning and preparing for the 2008 CFA Institute Annual Conference in Vancouver. The Board is continually striving to improve our public awareness and brand recognition to the public, professionals, employers and local universities and colleges.

I would like to personally thank the Board, the many volunteers and our CFA Vancouver Administrator, Sheila Hughson, for their efforts and hard work. Leaving the Board this year are: Kenneth Trider, Rob Edel and Janine Guenther. In closing, I am grateful for the dedication exhibited by the Board this year and for the support given me. The impressive efforts and passion of these volunteers drive the growth of our society and the evolution of the services for you, our members.

Treasurer’s Report Adam Pion, CFA

C F A V a n c o u v e r e n j o y e d c o n t i n u -ing strong financial results in Fiscal 2007 as evi-denced by our operating surplus of approximately $17,000. The two primary sources of revenue continue to be membership dues and employment postings. Revenues from both sources grew over the strong numbers of the previous year. The increased employment posting revenues resulted from our strong employment market, improved pricing and employer awareness of the value of the CFA Charter. CFA Vancouver continues to take advantage of the programs and resources provided by CFA Institute in an effort to better serve our local membership and candidates

CFA Institute 60th Anniversary:

Donna Jones, CFA

On June 11, 2007, CFA Institute celebrated its 60th anniversary and proclaimed the date as CFA Day. CFA Day is a worldwide celebration whereby CFA Institute and its member socie-ties recognize the founding of the investment profession with a variety of events.

CFA Vancouver hosted a delightful reception and viewing at the Vancouver Art Gallery on the evening of June 11. Over 400 CFA Van-couver members, guests and other business associations attended the first public viewing of the world class exhibit, Monet to Dali: Modern Masters from the Cleveland Museum of Art. Our guest speaker, Brian Dedora, hosted an informative presentation on investing in art. Thank you for the very positive feedback on the event

CANDIDATE REPORT – Rob Edel, CFA

2007 was another busy and successful season for Candidate programs with a number of well attended events being held. We kicked off the season with the Candidate reception on December 5th at the Hyatt Hotel in downtown Vancouver. Not only were approximately 100 Candidates treated to tasty snacks and beverages but Peter Mackey from CFA Institute was on hand to deliver an interesting speech on the CFA Program curriculum and the exam process. Mr. Mackey is CFA Institute’s Head of Examina-tion Development, it was a rare opportunity for Candidates to meet and talk with one of the individuals responsible for developing the CFA exam. Representatives from Stalla were on hand to answer Candi-date questions regarding their review courses and raffled off complimentary tuitions to 3 lucky Candi-dates in each level. Candidates were encouraged to form study groups and mingle with others through-out the evening.

CFA Vancouver awarded 10 CFA Program scholarships to Candidates, split between the December and June exam programs, and diversified throughout all three levels of exams. We received a total of 48 applications, slightly lower than last years total, and would hope that more Candidates apply next year as we saw many worthy applications. These Scholarships are a great opportunity for Candidates as they reimburse them with full tuition and CFA Vancouver pays the $150 US exam fee.

We rounded out the Candidates Programs with a mock exam on May 5th held at the Segal Centre Graduate School of Business. This exam was prepared by the Boston Society and is meant to help Candidates benchmark their level of preparedness by writing an exam under normal exam conditions. At the conclusion, an answer key was distributed so candidates could self grade their exams.

As always, we rely on the contribution of the many volunteers that have helped out during the year. None of our events would have been able to proceed without them and we would like to take this oppor-tunity to thank them. We would especially like to thank Sheila Hughson who does an incredible job or-ganizing and managing the events.

CHARTER AWARDS CEREMONY December 6th marked the 4th Annual Charter Awards Ceremony where 30 newly crowned CFA’s were called upon to receive their Charters in front of family and friends and were treated to speeches by Pe-ter Mackey, President, Alex Prodanovic and Past President, Ian Robertson.

EMPLOYER OUTREACH

Donna Jones, CFA On March 2, 2007, CFA Vancouver sponsored a booth at the 4th annual Career Expo fair hosted by UBC and SFU Business schools. Many prestigious employers and other professional organizations were present. Our booth was very busy with stu-dents and candidates interested in the CFA desig-nation. The fair was a tremendous opportunity to raise awareness of the CFA program and designa-tion and the career opportunities in the investment profession.

29th Annual Forecast Dinner—Catherine Heath, CFA

The 29th Annual CFA Vancouver Forecast Dinner was held on January 17, 2007 at the Ho-tel Vancouver and was attended by approximately 420 members and guests. The speak-ers’ views and forecasts were very different, which made the evening both interesting and entertaining. The first forecaster, Jeremy Grantham, was of the view that equity markets are overvalued and warned of mean reversion. Mr. Grantham pointed out that “20% of the time, stocks return approximately 0% real return over 10 years.” Martin Barnes of BCA Research followed with his view that North American equity market performance will con-tinue to be strong over the next year with a forecast of 16% return on the S&P/TSX and a 12% return on the S&P 500 in the next 12 months. He listed strong liquidity and good health of corporate sector finances as factors leading to strong economic growth.

The evening concluded with the most bullish of the three forecasters, James Paulsen. Mr. Paulsen noted that corporate excess cash-flow is "off the charts," but companies are not spending their cash. Every quarter corporations "beat their numbers, but say the future looks tough.” Mr. Paulsen believes investors have also been cautious and stated that “All this caution is bullish -- businesses still have money to spend and investors money to in-vest: I think bravado and optimism begets bad times and chronic cautiousness paints a beautiful picture for the future."

The 2008 Forecast Dinner will be held in January 2008. Please mark your calendars!

PUBLIC AWARENESS - Lisa Dempsey, CFA

Our aim this year was to continue to promote the CFA brand to professionals and high net worth indi-viduals in Vancouver. These target markets are consistent with the Canadian national strategy for CFA brand awareness, which we expect to gain strength in years to come. The CFA designation was also promoted through networking events with local lawyers and accountants, and through our candidate pro-grams and employer outreach committees at local universities and career fairs. The CFA Day event was another welcome opportunity to invite professionals to meet more CFA charterholders and was well attended. We promoted the expertise of the CFA charterholder using an ad developed by CFA Institute. This ad was placed in several publications, including the Arts Club Theatre Productions of "Mom's the Word 2" and "The Syringa Tree", reaching approximately 40,000 readers for each production. We also placed two billboards near the Airport and near GM Place in the spring with a similar ad. We will consider more diverse advertisements and suggestions for next year. Media representatives from The Vancouver Sun and Business in Vancouver attended a number of our programs and events this year, often producing accompanying articles. For example, Business In Van-couver published an article about the timely real estate presentation that Patricia Croft of Phillips Hager & North gave in April. We are hoping to broaden our reach to the local media this year again. Thank you to our members whom have recently indicated they would be interested in speaking to the media. If you would like to learn more about these opportunities, please contact me at: [email protected]. We hope that CFA Vancouver's continued promotion in the local and national media will broaden the awareness of the CFA brand. Suggestions and volunteer assistance are always welcome. Remember to wear your CFA pin!,

UNIVERSITY RELATIONS - Derek Yee, CFA

The role of University Relations is to provide support to the University/College Communities.

CFA Vancouver was a co-sponsor (along with Odlum Brown Limited, Leith Wheeler Investment Counsel Limited) of the BC Portfolio Management Challenge Competition. This year the competition was open to university and college students. The competition attracted 750 students that made up 260 teams, from seven universities and seven colleges, that were located throughout the province. Each team was given $1,000 in hypothetical capital to manage for the four and one half month period. The University of Victo-ria won the University Division, and Okanagan College won the College division. A number of CFA Charterholders that are members of CFA Vancouver, CFA Kelowna, and CFA Victoria, volunteered as mentors.

We also held a number of meetings and attend presentations with students at SFU and UBC. Topics that were discussed included providing an overview of the CFA program, explaining the skills and com-petencies necessary to become successful in the investment industry, and identifying career options that exist for new finance graduates. The focus of last year’s efforts was to expand CFA Vancouver’s rela-tionships with the UBC community.

During the up coming year we would like to expand our level of participation with the university commu-nity. To do this, we would like to encourage all members to contact us and volunteer. The more hands we have the more we can achieve.

2008 CONFERENCE – Ian Robertson, CFA

CFA Vancouver is proud to be hosting CFA Institute’s 61st Annual Conference May 11-14, 2008 at the Vancouver Convention & Exhibition Centre. Based on past attendance, we expect upwards of 1200-1600 investment professionals from around the world will gather here to hear industry leaders share in-sights on today's most critical investment issues.

The previous two conferences (held in Zurich and New York) featured experts such as Robert Merton, Peter Bernstein, Robert Schiller, Lawrence Kudlow, Abby Joseph Cohen, Mark Faber and Sir David Tweedie, who provided their insights into market trends, uncovered new investment opportunities, and delivered practical investment advice. CFA Vancouver President Catherine Heath and I are privileged to sit on CFA Institute’s Annual Conference Speaker Committee this year, and we expect a similar blockbuster line-up of speakers for our conference. Details will be unveiled through the fall on CFA In-stitute’s website.

Registration cost is US$1,000 for CFA Institute members and US$1,250 for non-members (plus GST) before December 31st, 2007, and an additional $100 for those registering after year-end. Last year’s conference sold out two months in advance, so be sure to secure your spot early.

A tremendous amount of volunteer effort goes into hosting a global conference, and I would like to rec-ognize CFA Vancouver members who have already logged many hours securing sponsorship, including: Catherine Heath, Alex Prodanovic, Janine Guenther, Donna Jones, Adam Pion, Al Hudec, Mark Fatte-dad, and Miika Makela. As well, we’ve had great support from our colleagues in Calgary (Craig Senyk, Beth Hamilton-Keen) and Toronto (Brian Smith, Nancy Bertrand). If your firm or a firm you know of is interested in learning more about sponsorship opportunities, please call one of our Sponsorship Com-mittee members listed above or our office administrator Sheila Hughson, or visit CFA Institute’s website at http://www.cfainstitute.org/memresources/conferences/Event_1796. There are still some opportuni-ties available – in particular Speaker Sponsorships and Corporate Breakfast Presentations.

In addition to the pre-conference work with speakers and sponsorship mentioned above, we will also need many volunteers to help with logistics during the conference. If you are interested in helping, please contact our office.

PROGRAMS 2006-07 - Miika Makela, Programs Co-Chair

Kenneth Trider and I would like to thank society members for supporting CFA Vancouver programs, it has been our pleasure to serve the society and deliver quality events. During the last season we changed the program format somewhat and took a more active role in driving the program content. A few of our company presenters were kind enough to allow us to coach them in delivering PD content in their presentations. This proved to be a good change as our audiences for company presentations increased. We would like to thank Sheila Hughson and volunteers Troy Peart, Chad Spence, David West, Alec Mac-Lean, and Janice Leung who made all of this possible.

Finally, I would like to extend my thanks to Kenneth Trider, who is leaving the board and whose hard work has been integral to the success of these programs.

We are working on an exciting line-up for the upcoming season and look forward to seeing you at future events.

Simon Fraser University Global Asset Wealth Management

Programs If you are interested in adding even more depth to your CFA knowledge, consider the MBA in Global Asset and Wealth Management (GAWM) at Simon Fraser Univer-sity.

Investment management as an industry sector is growing – in market size as well as in complexity. Success in this competitive and rewarding area requires increasingly di-verse and sophisticated skills: a solid understanding of portfolio design; practical experience with fund manage-ment; and the social finesse to operate effectively.

Senior executives from national financial services firms helped design this MBA with a deep specialization in fi-nance, and focused on investment and asset manage-ment. The GAWM MBA ensures graduates are well versed in portfolio architecture as well as the financial and analytical aspects needed to structure an efficient in-vestment portfolio.

A rigorous academic curriculum is taught by Simon Fra-ser University faculty and industry practitioners with spe-cialized knowledge, and is complemented by hands-on experience with Canada’s largest student-managed en-dowment fund, a paid internship and extensive personal and professional development resources.
