Head coach Dirk Koetter knew that the 2004 Sun Devils were skilledenough and fast enough. The question Koetter wanted answered waswhether they were tough enough.

The answer was a resounding “yes” as the team turned in a 9-3record, including a Sun Bowl victory over Purdue. The Sun Devils notonly proved their toughness but showed their adaptability, intelligence, skill and resolve, exceeding expectations that had them picked nearthe bottom of the Pac-10 with a third-place finish behind just nationalchampion USC and highly-ranked California.

Heading into 2005, Koetter’s fifth year at the helm, the question tobe answered is whether the success that has seen the team earn bowlappearances in two of the last three seasons can be continued.Clearly, Koetter has to be pleased with the state of the program giventhe balance and retention in each recruiting class, their performance inthe classroom and, certainly, the prospects on the gridiron. Preseasonpredictions have the Sun Devils ranked in the top 15 in the countryheading into 2005.

“The way we were able to win the (bowl) game definitely jump-started us into this season because even after the unfortunate loss atArizona, Andrew Walter’s injury and our tailback situation, it was allpretty much doom and gloom even though we had an 8-3 season upto that point,” Koetter said. “With the way Sam Keller and RudyBurgess were able to play, the way our defense was able to containone of the better offenses in the country and just the way our playershung in there and fought really was the epitome of what last year’steam was and is a good sign of things to come.”

THE OFFENSE

ASU finished last season ranked 16th nationally in total offense on thestrength of a passing attack that led the Pac-10 and ranked fifth in thecountry. Even with the loss of Andrew Walter, who ended his tenure asASU’s career-leading passer, the coaches are excited about theprospects for even more fireworks this season.

The 2005 Devil offense, comfortable running the multiple setsused last year employing an H- back instead of a fullback, comes intothe season well stocked at several key positions and showing signifi-cant promise at the rest. Koetter, who acts as his own offensive coor-dinator, and the Sun Devils return all but one offensive lineman and allof the wide receiving corps. Koetter also expects the return of keymembers of the tailback corps and the continued development of hisyoung quarterbacks. Combined, it has the makings of another excitingKoetter-led offense.

There is no question that the Sun Devils will miss the talents of record-setting quarterback Andrew Walter, who graduated and is on his wayto a career in the NFL. The question will be how much. If early indica-tions mean anything, the Sun Devils should be just fine behind centeras junior Sam Keller comes into his own.

Keller, the incumbent starter, filled in nicely for Walter in the 2004Vitalis Sun Bowl. Making his first career start, Keller walked away withMVP honors after completing 25 of 45 attempts without an interceptionfor 370 yards and three touchdowns. He directed a fourth-quarter

comeback for the Sun Devil archives, including a game-winning drivethat covered 80 yards in four plays in 30 seconds. Throughout thecourse of the game, Keller completed passes to six receivers.

Keller’s Sun Bowl performance should, perhaps, not have been asurprise. Sun Devil fans were given a glimpse of his poise and accu-racy in the fourth quarter of the loss at Arizona when Keller, taking overfor the injured Walter, directed the team on two drives. He capped offan 80-yard touchdown drive with a three-yard pass to Jamaal Lewis inthe end zone and nearly completed the comeback with a drive from theASU 20-yard line with 2:20 left which unfortunately stalled with adropped pass at the Wildcat 5-yard line with just over a minute left.

On the season, Keller completed 42 of 71 passes for 606 yardsand five touchdowns and just one interception. While Koetter has indi-cated there will be competition for the starting quarterback position thisspring, should Keller emerge as the starter, Sun Devil fans will have agame-proven player at the helm.

“I think Sam can come in and do a good job. Andrew Walter wasa guy who improved a lot over the three years he started, and I’m sureSam will do the same. He’s got some big shoes to fill,” Koetter said.“The Sun Bowl win springboarded us into the offseason. I think ourguys said ‘Hey, Sam Keller is pretty good, and we are going to have agood football team next year.’”

Making a serious push for time behind center this spring will beredshirt freshman Rudy Carpenter. Carpenter ran the scout team dur-ing his redshirt year, winning the McBurney Scout Team Award in theprocess. He provides mobility and quickness along with a strong arm.

“I wasn’t here to coach Jake Plummer, but from seeing Jake onfilm and seeing Rudy in high school, he is a Plummer-type of player,”Koetter said. “He’s not always going to look the prettiest by droppingback and throwing a seven-step drop pass, but Rudy is the type of guywho is going to scramble around and hit somebody 40 yards down thefield. He’s a runner and a scrambler. I really think that Rudy is going toend up being way better than most people think he is.”

Senior Chad Christensen has proven invaluable to the Sun Devilprogram and will provide depth at quarterback and continued versatil-ity in other areas. Christensen, who is also ASU’s holder for field goals, started four games at quarterback as a redshirt freshman and playedin 11 games as a sophomore. He extended himself to help his squadlast season and during the spring, also seeing time at running backand wide receiver, including a team-high 91 receiving yards in the finalspring scrimmage. A successful student-athlete who was a Pac-10 All-Academic selection for the third time in his career and earned hisdegree in finance in December of 2004, Christensen continues to be avaluable asset to the Sun Devil squad.

“Chad is the guy that you want your daughter to marry. He’s agreat student and already a college graduate,” Koetter said. “Not onlydoes he know what he’s doing at quarterback, he can also play widereceiver. He played running back for us last year and on special teams. He’s a great team player.”

Derek Shaw will join the Sun Devil program in the fall as one ofthe most heralded quarterback prospects in the country. A 6-3, 215-pound freshman from Oceanside (Calif.) High School, Shaw was ratedthe No. 1 high school senior quarterback in the nation by PrepStarMagazine, and Sun Devil fans are eager for Shaw to showcase hisskills.

Last year, ASU’s running backs scored only six rushing touchdowns. That should be a thing of the past, however, and with stability at theposition, the offense should be even more explosive. ASU’s backsshowed grit and determination in 2004, and with the additions on theirway to Tempe in the fall, the Sun Devil running attack should be a finecomplement to an already potent passing game.

Any discussion of Sun Devil running backs would be incompletewithout mention of sophomore Rudy Burgess. Difficult to categorizeand even more difficult to tackle, Burgess responded to Koetter’s callfor volunteers at running back, splitting time in the backfield and atwide receiver and making himself one of the most valuable Sun Devilsof the 2004 campaign. He carried the ball 77 times for 404 yards, including a sparkling 186-yard effort in ASU’s win over Stanford and anMVP-type performance in the Sun Bowl. Burgess also showed hisskills at wide receiver, turning in 22 catches for 248 yards and fivetouchdowns. Further illustrating his amazing versatility, Burgess alsoreturned punts and kickoffs, the latter for an average of 22.5 yards perattempt (fifth in the Pac-10).

In anticipation of his role at running back during the 2005 season,Burgess has added 10 pounds of muscle, hoping to increase his dura-bility, power and speed.

“One of the goals of the coaching staff is to constantly work todefine what Rudy’s role is,” Koetter said. “Some of his role is based onthe health of other players. Rudy had two tremendous games at tail-back for us. We thought all along that Rudy would break into the rota-tion as a wide receiver. The combination of tailback, receiver, slotreceiver, return man…we’ve got to figure all that out.”

Sophomore Randy Hill will also return in 2005 after an ACL tearsidelined him early last year. At the time of his injury, Hill was averag-ing 3.7 yards per carry, gaining his yardage with a straight-ahead, pow-erful style. Hill missed spring practice as he continued to rehabilitatehis knee but should be ready to step right in when the team returns tothe field in the fall.

“Randy is one of the best all-around football players on our teamwhen he’s healthy,” Koetter said.

Sophomore Preston Jones, who missed the spring with a shoul-der injury, hopes to continue to compete for playing time. Despite his5-8, 173-pound frame, he filled in admirably as ASU’s depth waned, playing in eight games with one start and averaging 3.4 yards percarry.

“Preston is a guy who came in and saved our bacon a couple oftimes last year,” Koetter said.

Also returning is sophomore Antone Saulsberry, a converted line-backer who moved to the backfield last season. A 6-0, 221-pounderwho rushed for over 1,000 yards as a high school senior, Saulsberryhas decided to stay at the position and will be in the mix.

Koetter is also eager to see what redshirt freshman Price Wilkscan bring to the table. Wilks’ combination of size and quickness shouldhelp in his quest for playing time as he continues to learn and getstronger.

The status of senior Cornell Canidate is still unclear, although hedid have a specialized surgery in the offseason to repair a groin injurythat has hampered him for two seasons. When healthy, Canidate, thebrother of former St. Louis Ram running back Trung Canidate, has

been a valuable player for the Sun Devils, leading the team in rushingas a redshirt freshman in 2002.

Koetter also welcomes the addition of sophomores Jarrett Sayasand Aaron Lafitte. A graduate of Desert Vista HS, Sayas transferredfrom New Mexico State and spent last season on ASU’s scout team, while Lafitte comes to ASU by way of Wabash College in Indiana.

The 2005 recruiting class also includes two exciting prospects atrunning back who could make a contribution this season. ShaunDeWitty, a 6-0, 200-pound freshman from Colorado Springs, is one ofthe more heralded players from the state of Colorado, and featuresexceptional speed and quickness for a back of his size. KeeganHerring, considered the top running back prospect in the state ofArizona and ASU’s first in-state commitment in the 2005 class, alsoshows great speed and skills. Herring also won three state track titlesthis spring as a senior at Peoria High School.

The Sun Devils are deep and talented at H-back and tight end, return-ing all of the key players from one season ago in a group that will beone of the best in the country. The H-back and tight end are separatepositions but are interchangeable by assignment. ASU’s corps of play-ers at the position yielded a total of 73 catches for 573 yards and ninetouchdowns.

The headliners of this group are sophomore All-America candi-date Zach Miller and senior Lee Burghgraef.

One of the most dynamic young players in the country, Miller wasnamed Pac-10 Freshman of the Year after catching 56 passes for 552yards and six touchdowns. His total catches tied Oregon State sopho-more Joe Newton for most catches by a tight end in the nation and tiedASU great and current Baltimore Raven Todd Heap’s school record formost catches by a tight end in a season. Miller, who also broke ASU’sfreshman records for catches and receiving yards, was also named toThe Sporting News second-team All-American, one of only four fresh-men nationwide to be awarded either a first- or second-team honorand the first Sun Devil freshman to be named an All-American sinceDavid Fulcher was named second team in 1983. The Sun Devils lookforward to more production from Miller in 2005 after he recovers fromoff-season shoulder surgery.

“For a guy to come in and be as physical at his position, to be asversatile and as smart, and to be as productive as Zach was at hisposition, he’s the best freshman I’ve been around,” Koetter said.

Burghgraef brings toughness, tenacity and a firm grip on thenuances of the offense to his play. Although his on-field stats are mod-est, Burghgraef’s contributions to the team are not.

“Lee is the iron man, the tough guy. He’s the guy who does all thedirty work,” Koetter said. “Lee is the guy who teaches the young guysbecause he knows our offense. He’s a jack of all trades. He’s going todo what it takes to win, and you need guys like him.”

Junior Jamaal Lewis brings great speed to the position and hasproven that he can stretch defenses. In 2004, Lewis averaged 15.2yards per catch, second on the team only to wide receiver Matt Miller’s

24.7. Lewis scored two touchdowns, both at critical moments in biggames. The Sun Devils can also rely on the solid play of Zach Miller’solder brother, sophomore Brent Miller. After redshirting his freshmanseason following a knee injury, Miller showed versatility in 2004 andfigures to get extensive playing time this season.

Sophomore Andrew Pettes will get a chance to prove himself, while ASU will welcome freshman Jovon Williams, a 6-3, 225-poundproduct of Charter Oak High School in Covina, Calif., this fall.

All-America candidate senior Derek Hagan just gets better and better. After a sensational sophomore season, he bested all of his marks dur-ing his junior season, turning in 83 catches for 1,248 yards and 10touchdowns and setting the school mark with 104.0 yards receivingper game. Hagan’s totals for receptions and years were the second-highest in Sun Devil history, trailing only Shaun McDonald’s 2002 sea-son marks of 87 catches and 1,405 yards. One of 11 semifinalists forthe Biletnikoff Award last season, he heads into his senior campaignwith 2,729 career yards which is third on the ASU career list, while heneeds just 264 yards to tie John Jefferson’s career total of 2,993 from1974-77. He should also set ASU’s career marks for receptions andreceiving touchdowns this season.

Hagan has already been named a preseason Playboy All-American for 2005 and brings the nation’s second-longest streak ofgames with at least one reception (29 games) into the 2005 season. Not one to rest on his laurels, Hagan has a chance to end his careeras one of the best wide receivers in Pac-10 history.

“If Derek stays healthy, he’ll shatter a lot of the career records. He’s got a lot of them already. Everything Derek gets, he deserves,”Koetter said. “Derek has had his best offseason since he’s been here. He’s the strongest and fastest he’s ever been. I think he’s going to putup some big numbers. I always kid Derek about not being fast enough, but he’s a lot faster than people think.”

In addition to Hagan, the Sun Devils also return three more topcontributors from last year’s receiving corps, including junior TerryRichardson and seniors Matt Miller and Moey Mutz. The trio combinedto produce 93 catches for 1,438 yards and 10 touchdowns last season, led by Richardson who ended up ninth in the Pac-10 with 56.6 yardsper game and earned honorable-mention all-league honors. Miller andMutz were sidelined in the spring by various injuries but are expectedto go full-speed in the fall.

“When you look at the tape from last season, other than DerekHagan, Moey Mutz may have been the second most consistent player

that we had. T-Rich did something at least once a game that made yousay ‘wow.’ Terry is capable of making plays and so is Matt Miller. Wewere a little thin for spring ball, but on paper, we’re in good shape atwide receiver,” Koetter said.

Other contributors who figure to provide a spark in 2005 will bethe ever-present Rudy Burgess and Michael Jones and NateKimbrough, both of whom redshirted last year. Jones and Kimbroughprovide the Sun Devils with speed and size, each measuring in at oversix feet tall. Providing further depth to the receiving corps will be seniorStephen Bisnett, junior Alex King and sophomore Jeff Gray.

“Mike Jones is a perfect example of how that extra bowl practicehelps the young guys because he got better and better as the yearwent on and played his best football in bowl practice,” Koetter said.“Nate Kimbrough is a lot like Derek Hagan. He uses Derek as his moti-vation and competes hard with him every day. Nate gave us fits on thescout team last year as a return guy as well as wide receiver.”

Joining the squad in the fall are two highly touted freshmen whowill bring size and skill to the position, Chris McGaha and BrandonSmith. A graduate of Phoenix’s Moon Valley High School, McGahawas selected as the Arizona Republic’s Big School Player of the Yearin 2004 and was a pre- and post-season all-region selection byPrepStar, while Smith, a graduate of West High School in Bakersfield,Calif., was also an all-region selection by PrepStar.

The offensive linemen of the 2005 Sun Devils are a coach’s dream andwill undoubtedly be one of the strengths of the team. Koetter and offen-

sive line coach Brent Myers enjoy a group deep with numbers, talent, experience and versatility. ASU returns every offensive lineman otherthan Drew Hodgdon (graduation), and nearly every returning playerwho didn’t redshirt last year has considerable experience.

“The offensive line is something we’re really excited about. Ourgoal is to get the five best offensive linemen on the field,” Koetter said.

Making the protection calls at center is likely to be All-Pac-10selection senior Grayling Love. Love is one of the most versatile play-ers among the group, having played at each of the offensive line posi-tions at one time or another in his ASU career. One of two players inthe Pac-10 earn first-team athletic and academic honors, Love finishedthe 2004 campaign at left tackle but has expressed a sincere interestin playing center this season and could be ASU’s starter at that spot.

“Grayling is definitely one of the best five offensive linemen on ourteam. His best natural position is probably center and that’s some-where Grayling wants to play,” Koetter said.

Sophomore Mike Pollak, who started four games last year inplace of the injured Hodgdon, will back up Love at center.

Senior Chaz White and redshirt freshman Brandon Rodd will lineup at left tackle, providing blind side protection for Sam Keller and theother quarterbacks. Rodd earned a starting spot at left guard last sea-son before tearing his ACL in the second game of the year, and ASUcoaches predict that he could have been a Freshman All-Americanhad he not been injured. White has started 16 career games at lefttackle and right guard through his career.

Junior Stephen Berg will flank Love at left guard position whilejunior Zach Krula, a high school teammate of Love’s, will start at rightguard. The right tackle position will be manned by returning second-team All-Pac-10 junior Andrew Carnahan.

Backing up that group is a talented crop of young players who willvie for considerable playing time at all of the spots along the line, including redshirt freshmen Bradis McGriff, Leo Talavou and PaulFanaika and sophomores Robert Gustavis, Julius Oriekwu and BeauBandura.

“Coach Myers will cross train those guys,” Koetter said. “We dohave some flexibility and some proven players. From a flexibility, depth, experience and productivity standpoint, the O-line is probablythe best position on our team right now.”

The talent and depth continues to grow as Koetter will welcomefreshmen Thomas Altieri, Shaun Lauvao, Richard Tuitu’u and J.D.Walton to the program in the fall.

THE DEFENSE

The 2004 Sun Devils showed significant improvement as a group overthe previous campaign, having switched from a base 4-2-5 defense toa 4-3 look employing three linebackers. Under new defensive coordi-nator Bill Miller, who brings over 27 years of experience in the colle-giate ranks and came to ASU after one season as associate headcoach at Florida, the 2005 Sun Devils look to improve even more andexploit what may well prove to be their strengths on that side of theball, the linebackers and safeties. In recent years, the defense hasimproved its speed and skill level, contributing greatly to the increas-ing success of the program overall.

“What Bill brings is a background similar to that of Brent Guy (whodeparted to become head coach at Utah State). That is, he’s a teacher,a guy who’s sound with fundamentals, a guy who relates to the play-ers and is a disciplinarian. What he adds is a wealth of experiencefrom all the places he’s been and some excellent ideas regarding howto integrate some other things to our defensive scheme that we weren’tdoing. Last year being our first year in the 4-3, Coach Guy kept it pret-ty simple. Bill’s got a lot of good ideas on how to advance that to thenext level. Bill’s just got to get used to our guys and figure out theirlearning curve.”

The Sun Devils lost several key members of their 2004 defensive lineto graduation in Jimmy Verdon, Gabe Reininger and Ishmael Throwerbut look to bounce back with a corps which might be deeper than inprevious years.

“Those guys will be hard to replace, but the show goes on, andwe have two returning starters,” Koetter said. “Jordan Hill might havebeen the surprise of last season. His move from linebacker to defen-sive tackle is one of the best moves we’ve made. Kyle Caldwell is get-ting better all the time. He’s very powerful and explosive. Everyone hassuch high expectations for Kyle, and I think he is going to be a greatone.”

Hill and Caldwell shared the team lead with seven sacks last sea-son with Hill starting 10 games at tackle and Caldwell starting all 12 atend. Hill finished the year with 47 total tackles, including 12 for a loss(second on the squad), and had two fumble recoveries. In addition tohis sacks, Caldwell showed his athleticism by hauling in an intercep-tion and breaking up four passes.

Two of the leading candidates for the starting spots alongsideCaldwell and Hill are seniors Quency Darley and DeWayne Hollyfield. Both players are in their second year in the program after transferringfrom the junior college ranks. Darley will likely push for a starting spotat defensive tackle while Hollyfield hopes to make his impression ateither end or tackle.

“Quency was a backup tackle for us last season and playedthrough a bad elbow. I really like the work he’s done in the off-season,”Koetter said. “He’ll be counted on to probably be a starter this seasonunless someone can beat him out. DeWayne is kind of a ‘tweener,’between a tackle and an end. He’s going to be in the mix there some-where and had an excellent offseason.”

Koetter also expects contributions from senior Mike Talbot,

sophomores Brett Palmer and Mike Meritet (who moved from line-backer) and redshirt freshmen David Smith and Wes Evans.Sophomores Kellen Mills and Tyrice Thompson have both made themove to the defensive line from tight end/h-back and figure to be in themix for playing time. Thompson is a proven special teams player whowill add a rusher at defensive end.

A pair of junior college tranfers, Shannon Jones and Will Kofe, willalso have a chance to make immediate contributions. Jones, theyounger brother of former Sun Devil standout Shane Jones and a two-year starter and 2004 all-league selection from Sierra College, figuresto get an immediate look at defensive tackle. Kofe, a first-team All-Western States honoree from Dixie College, has a chance to make animpact at defensive end after enrolling at ASU and participating inspring drills.

Joining the Sun Devils in the fall will be highly regarded freshmenDexter Davis and Jameon Hardeman. Davis was a two-time first-teamall-state selection, while Hardeman was named to the top 100 in thestate of Texas (all positions) by the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

With two of three starters and almost every backup returning from lastseason’s squad, Koetter is confident that ASU’s linebacking corps willbe the strength of the defense. Last season, starters Dale Robinson,Jamar Williams and Justin Burks formed one of the most effectivegroups in the conference, finishing 1-2-3 on the team in tackles. Allthree players were early-season candidates for the Butkus Award andall three earned honorable-mention All-Pac-10 honors. With Robinsonand Williams returning for their senior seasons, there is little doubt thatthe group should pick up where they left off this year under the guid-ance of first-year linebackers coach and defensive coordinator BillMiller.

“The hardest part with a new linebackers coach and defensivecoordinator is there’s going to be some growing pains as guys adjustto Coach Miller’s system and he figures out who plays best where. Some of that is learning style,” Koetter said. “How fast can they learnit? One thing you can be sure of. Jamar Williams and Dale Robinsonare going to play a lot of football.”

Robinson, nicknamed “Manimal” for his punishing hits, was a par-ticular surprise in 2004, arriving as a junior college transfer and

promptly putting an iron grip on starting at the SAM (strong side) posi-tion. He went on to compile 93 tackles (second only to Burks’ 95).Thirteen of his stops were for a loss, while he also recorded 4.5 sacksand an interception. Robinson stands as an early favorite for All-Pac-10 honors this year as he moves to the middle to take over for thedeparted Burks.

Williams recorded 81 total tackles, which ranked third on theteam, including 6.5 for a loss, and added two sacks and three inter-ceptions (second on the team). He looks to acquire some postseasonhardware as well as he applies his considerable talent on the strongside. According to Koetter, Williams had a strong offseason and willlook to contribute even more as a team leader in his senior campaign.

Sophomore Robert James, a 5-11 product from Maryvale HighSchool in Glendale, has continued to improve in each season and willmake a run at the starting spot at the third spot, the Will back.

Also competing for playing time will be seniors Lamar Baker, whohas already earned his undergraduate degree in interdisciplinary stud-ies, and Nick Clapp, who has continued to progress since transferringto ASU from Paradise Valley CC. Sophomores DeAndre Johnson andMark Washington and redshirt freshman Adam Vincent will be in themix as well as Miller figures out his rotation.

The lone newcomer to the group is junior Beau Manutai, a NJCAApreseason All-American who transferred to ASU from Dixie Collegewhere he was a teammate of defensive end Will Kofe. Like Kofe,Manutai joined the team in the spring and will be given every opportu-nity for playing time at the Mike backer spot.

ASU will welcome freshman Chad Lindsey to the program in thefall. A 6-0, 210-pounder, Lindsey was named first-team all-districtselection last season as a senior at Cypress Ridge High School inHouston, Texas.

Despite being a bit depleted by injury in the spring, the cornerbacksposition has a chance to be another strength of the team as 2005approaches. ASU lost the services of two-year senior starter ChrisMcKenzie but received a big shot of veteran leadership and experi-ence when senior R.J. Oliver, who has started 30 career games, wasgranted a sixth year of eligibility by the NCAA and will return in 2005.

An honorable-mention All-Pac-10 selection as a sophomore,Oliver was hampered by injuries in 2003 and 2004, missing all of lastyear after tearing ligaments in his foot in the preseason. When healthy,Oliver is one of the best “lock-down” corners in the Pac-10. He missedspring ball rehabilitating his foot injury, but by fall, Koetter hopes to that

Oliver will be able to regain the productivity he has shown in the past.Joining Oliver at the position are senior Josh Golden and sopho-

more Chad Green, both of whom saw extensive playing time in 2004.Golden started all of 12 games in 2004 at corner and has continued toget better and better. He finished fifth on the team with 49 tackles andadded a pair of interceptions last season. Golden had offseason hipsurgery and missed spring drills but is expected to return in the fall.

Green, who played in all 12 games last season, also missedspring practice with a leg injury but should return in the fall to competefor playing time. Koetter has tabbed Green as possibly the best youngcorner on the team.

Also vying for playing time will be senior Mike Davis Jr. He hasseen extensive playing time over the last three seasons and could bepoised to make his biggest contribution yet in his final campaign.Waiting in the wings are sophomore Littrele Jones and redshirt fresh-men Myrio Davis and Uriah Marshall who all received extensive repsin the spring.

ASU will welcome four cornerbacks in the fall in junior collegetransfers Chris Baloney and Keno Walter-White and freshmen GrantCrunkleton and Travis Smith. Picked as the No. 9 junior college cornerin the country by College Football News, Baloney comes to ASU fromCollege of the Sequoias and attended Langham Creek High School inHouston, the alma mater of ASU linebacker Jamar Williams. Walter-White was picked as the fourth-best corner in the nation by CollegeFootball News and is a two-sport star out of Mesa College in SanDiego. Both PrepStar all-region selections, Crunkleton attendedMullen High School in Denver, while Smith comes to ASU fromJefferson High School in Los Angeles.

Although the Sun Devils have big shoes to fill at safety with the depar-ture of three-time All-Pac-10 honoree Riccardo Stewart, ASU returns anumber of players with significant experience and welcomes a pair oftransfers who have a chance to make an impact.

Sophomore Josh Barrett has played extremely well, starting threegames and backing up Stewart last season. He missed the springrecovering from a shoulder injury but should continue to emerge as aviable candidate to start at one of the safety spots in the fall.

Another early frontrunner in the battle is junior Zach Catanese, ahighly touted transfer from Shasta College in Redding, Calif. In his finalseason at Shasta, Catanese recorded 90 tackles, 51 of those solo, twosacks, five interceptions, two blocked punts and 12 passes defended. He joined the team in the spring and is expected to be in the mix forsignificant playing time.

ASU will also have the services of senior Emmanuel Franklin whostarted all 12 games last season and was granted an additional yearof NCAA eligibility. Coming back from a significant head injury early inhis career and having made the switch from cornerback to safety,Franklin was an extremely effective cog in the Devils’ defense in 2004.He recorded 49 tackles, including six for loss, and had four intercep-tions last season.

Koetter also expects continued contributions from senior MauriceLondon and sophomores Rodney Cox and Brett Nenaber. All threehave also played a lot on special teams. Sophomore Jeremy Payton,a converted wide receiver, and redshirt freshman Angelo Fobbs-Valentino will also get their chances this season.

Junior Derron Ware, a transfer from Michigan State where heplayed under Coach Miller, brings a “sense of urgency,” according toKoetter, and should also be in the mix. Ware played at MSU for twoseasons and is originally from Dorsey High School in Los Angeleswhere he was a PrepStar All-American.

SPECIAL TEAMS

Special teams are the units which set the table for the Sun Deviloffense and defense. Special teams are an important part of Koetter’sgameplan and are managed by assistant head coach Tom Osborne.

Punt & Kickoff Returns

Rudy Burgess 5-11 181 So. Edwards, Calif. (Desert)Terry Richardson 6-1 184 Jr. Corona, Calif.

(Centennial)Josh Golden 5-10 174 Sr. Westlake Village, Calif.

(Santa Fe)Derek Hagan 6-2 197 Sr. Palmdale, Calif.

(Palmdale)

Burgess and Richardson combined to return 41 punts last season fora total of 418 yards, a 10.5 yard per return average. Returning kickoffs,Burgess returned 15 for 337 yards, Golden 10 for 228 yards andRichardson four for 115. Kimbrough has shown significant promise asa returner and could return either kickoffs or punts, while preseasonAll-American Derek Hagan may also get a shot.

Punter

Chris MacDonald 6-4 214 So. Mesa, Ariz(Red Mountain)

Greg Woidneck 6-0 193 RS-Fr. Brea, Calif.(Brea Olinda)

A Sporting News Freshman All-American, MacDonald showed strongpromise in his initial campaign as ASU’s punter, averaging 43.1 yards, with seven touchbacks and 16 inside the 20-yard line. He will beexpected to continue his strong showing in 2005 season, perhaps fine-tuning for accuracy.

Walk-on Greg Woidneck had a very good spring while MacDonaldwas sidelined by injury.

Placekicker

handle ASU’s kicking duties for the third season. In 2004, the honor-able-mention All-Pac-10 selection was 18 for 28 on field goal attempts(.643) and ranked second in the Pac-10 and 13th in the nation in fieldgoals per game (1.50). He was also one of two kickers in the leagueto connect on all of his PAT attempts (40-40).

Junior Mark Merrill, a Tempe native who transferred from RadfordCollege where he played soccer, will back up Ainsworth.

Long Snapper

Jason Burke 6-2 254 Jr. Glendale, Ariz.(Mountain Ridge)

Kyle Caldwell 6-3 253 Jr. Scottsdale, Ariz(Saguaro)
