Too Close For Comfort

Purdue and Notre Dame have split theirfour meetings since Joe Tiller and BobDavie took over their respective programs. The last three meetings, however, werenot decided until the final minute:

In 1998, the Fighting Irish prevailed31-30 at Notre Dame Stadium on a 17-yard field goal by Jim Sanson with 57seconds remaining. The Boilermakers hadled 30-21 with less than four minutes toplay before Notre Dame mounted itscomeback.

The last time the two teams met atRoss-Ade Stadium – Sept. 11, 1999 – theFighting Irish had third-and-goal from thePurdue 1-yard line with 15 seconds to gowhen Purdue linebacker Mike Rose – ona Boilermaker blitz – dropped Notre Damequarterback Jarious Jackson for a 9-yardloss. The final horn sounded before theFighting Irish could get off another play, and the Boilermakers held on for 28-23victory.

And last season in South Bend, NickSetta nailed a 38-yard field goal as timeexpired to give Notre Dame a 23-21 win.The Boilermakers appeared destined fortheir first victory at Notre Dame Stadiumsince 1974 when Drew Brees and VinnySutherland hooked up for a 22-yardtouchdown pass with 3:39 remaining.

Pretty amazing, considering that from1946 to 1997, there were just two gamesbetween Purdue and Notre Dame in whichthe winning points were scored in thefinal five minutes. The Boilermakers wonthe first meeting between Tiller and Davieby the score of 28-17 in 1997 at Ross-Ade.

“That’s a surprise to us (that Drew Breesthrew just 22 passes), just like it was asurprise to me when we threw 83 times atWisconsin (in 1998). We ought to be happywith the way we ran the ball, but as far aswe’re concerned, we ran the football toomuch today.”

Tiller Talk

“It was good to go on the road to start theyear and win a football game the way wedid. I thought we would perform better insome areas. But our defense did a good jobof handling their no-huddle offense. I’m glad(Cincinnati) did that because we’ve got acouple of teams in our league that run it.”
