June 9, 2001Saturday, June 9th, we will meet at McDonalds in Junc-tion City at 12:30 with the tour starting at 1PM. Turnoff of I-5 at Albany on Exit 216 or 209 for a nice drivedown old Hiway 99 to Junction City. We are going torepeat a visit to Tenold and Karen Peterson’s hand craftedshowplace home that we visited in June of 1998. Lookback at the June 1998 issue of HNW for the story of thevisit. Tenold and Karen are master craftsmen in art andsculpture, and their house is a showplace for their tal-ents. You have to see it to believe it. Tenold has a beau-tifully modified Jaguar XK150 Drophead and his cur-rent project is a 1940 Packard 4 door sedan that he isconverting into a woody wagon. If you missed this tourthree years ago try to make it this time. You won’t besorry. If you miss the start of the tour call Tenold at 541-998-2750 for directions.

The second stop on the tour will be led by Joe Dickey inhis newly restored Bugeye to his father’s home. His dadbuilds miniature V8 engines that actually start up andrun on gasoline. From there we will tour back roads tothe home of John and Shirley Wilson and Healey LaneRestorations. The meeting will be around 4PM followedby a Bar B Q and refreshments for $5 per person.Wilson’s address is 37141 Parsons Creek Road, Marcola,OR. June president’s message

May’s outing had “Chamber of Commerce” kind ofweather and the Healey tour was enjoyed by all, about22 Healeys and 5 BJ9s. It was fun to eat, do some scenicHealey driving, site seeing and chatting at the coveredbridge rest stops. I am sure most of us have a picture ortwo for our albums with our Healeys and a covered bridgein the background. Thanks to Norm Simpson and LarryEmerson for organizing the day. A super time was hadby all.

In reflecting back on my membership in the AHCO anumber of things surface for me. First, it seems to beone of the most active and best clubs on the coast andfor that matter in the US. In my role as an officer, onnumerous occasions, various advertisers and other clubmembers have made a point of mentioning this to me.The most common theme has been that the club is soactive, that plans include everyone who wants to par-ticipate. All the members seem to really enjoy their cars, are helpful, and have developed many friendships overthe years. ACHO is unique because of its members andtheir willingness to be involved. As we all know, thekey to a successful club is broad and active participa-tion. This brings me to the main theme of this message.

It may seem early but it is time to begin the process offinding members to volunteer for officer’s positions fornext year. The elections are held in September and theballots will be mailed out in August. A strong club de-pends on old and new volunteers. I have a simple re-quest for all members. Begin to think about people whowould be good officers. If you are a past officer, seekout a member who hasn’t been an officer or hasn’t beenone recently. Discuss the positions and encourage theirparticipation. If a past officer, give consideration to run-ning again. Remember, the offices of Membership, Ac-tivities, Editor, and Regalia can be held by couples. Please give it some thought.

I wish you the very best of motoring

General Membership MeetingMay 12, 2001 Minutesby Stephanie Hellickson

(continued on page 8...)

The meeting was brought to order by President AlanGross at 2:55 p.m. at the La Estrellita Restaurant at theSantiam Golf Course in Salem, Oregon. Alan thankedNorm Simpson and Larry Emerson for the great cov-ered bridge tour. It was thoroughly enjoyed by all. Theminutes of the April meeting were approved as publishedin the May newsletter.

Membership, Mary Gross, reported that she is not quitedone with the membership breakdown. She also intro-duced and welcomed new members Jerry and VeronicaWalton who have moved to Eugene from Connecticut.

Treasurer, Gary Jackson, did not have his regular reportprepared, but reported that we had at least $24,945 inour account. Gary will not be here for the next twomonths and Bill Massey has agreed to fill in while he isgone.

Activities, Leon Hart, again thanked Norm and Larryfor the for a most enjoyable tour and reported that June’smeet would be hosted by John and Shirley Wilson. Wewill meet in Junction City for a tour that will include astop at a friend’s place that builds scale model, workingV-8 engines. The tour will end up at John and Shirley’splace for a barbecue. All food and drinks will be pro-vided. There will be a five dollar charge to cover thecosts. More information will be available in the nextnewsletter. Leon also reminded people that they needto get their money into him for the Historic Races by theend of May.

Regalia, Pat Barron, reported that they are concentrat-ing on the regalia for Rendezvous 2001.

Advertising, Tammy Auburg. Reported that she has acouple more checks to send to the Treasurer.

Editor, Terry Hellickson, had nothing new to report, butasked for more stories.

Club Coordinator, Bill Bolton reported that Rendezvous2001 is coming together quite nicely. We have received33 registrations so far which equals about 65 people, most of which are from California. He reminded people

that registration goes up June 1st from $30 to $40. Hewill be giving regalia a list of what has been pre orderedso they can set their volumes. There will be two specialguests, Margo Healey and John Sprinzel. John will givea tech session from 4:00 - 5:00 after the Helgate tour onTuesday and will also give a speech at the picnic onThursday. He is very important in the development ofthe Sprite. Earl and Joanne have set up a great rally; itis about 100 miles long and will take most of the day. Itwill include rest stops with time to visit at some of thehighlights along the way. The rally will be sponsoredby Bob Macheroni and he will also supply the awardsThere will be an auction also. Skip Monaco and DougAuburg have sent out about seventy letters to car relatedcompanies asking for donations. They have so far re-ceived three responses with donated items. Membersare welcome to donate suitable items for the auction. Please do not just bring it to the meet. Notify Skip as towhat it is and if possible get it to her. It is necessary tobe able have all items organized when we hand themover to the British Columbia Club who are running theactual auction. Jim Morrison of that club will be theauctioneer. We break even with this meet at 100 people;we are holding the auction to ensure that we do makesome money on the meet. Bill was contacted by theSouthern Oregon Kart Club. They have a first class trackoutside Medford that could have been made availableto us for an auto-cross. The cost would be $300 plusliability coverage and would need to be pre-sold at $30per car with a minimum of ten cars. The only day it wasavailable was Friday which would require people to stayover an extra day. At this point it does not appear it willhappen unless enough people come forward, soon , withmoney.

Bill Massey reported that there are several items thatbelong to the club that we perhaps did not need any-more and could be added to the auction. There are somepaint chip plaques that we don’t need now that we havea book. There is a banner from the 1989 West CoastMeet and some 1989 award plaques that never gotawarded. There is a 20x20 British flag cushion and aHP scanner with software. It was moved and approvedthat these items be put up for auction. It was suggestedthat we might try to get some autographs, like Margo,

on the banner to make it more desirable.

ABFM representative, Bill Massey said that registrationforms would be going out soon and people need to gettheir money in as soon as possible so as to make Doug’sjob easier. Bill has posters if anyone can post them intheir neighborhoods.

There was no old or new business.

The meeting was adjourned at 3:15 p.m.

During the covered bridge tour Tom Santee offered anidea for Austin Healey owners to submit entries forrecords in a variety of categories. As he explains, thenewsletter for The Vintage Triumph Register club, called“The English Channel”, has been running a columncalled “Guinness Beer of Triumph Records.” Some ofthe categories include most operating Triumphs, long-est trip in a Triumph, owner of the oldest Triumph, long-est Triumph original owner, etc. Bragging rights in simi-lar Healey related, and perhaps other, categories couldbe great fun to read. We could include ‘the most operat-ing Healeys, longest restoration project, year when ac-quiring your first Healey, most driving competitions wonin a Healey’, and so on.

If you have bragging rights in a category not listed here, name it and send in your entry. Who knows, we mayeven keep track and show some sort of perverse recog-nition to the “winners” someday. “Healey Enthusiats’Multiple Records Of Iffy Distinction”, HEMROID forshort, will be strictly for fun without profit. Send in anentry. Let’s see who the real record holders are. Here isTom Santee’s entry:

“We’ve owned our Healey since May 1972. My firstBritish car was a 1956 MGA two friends of mine and Ibought in 1966 when I was 17. It cost me $10 but I hadto buy the parts from J.C. Whitney to put the enginetogether.”

10 Healey Northwest u June 2001

It was a beautiful day for a Healey tour, sunny skieswith temperatures in the low 70’s all day. The earlybirds met at Denny’s in Salem for breakfast while therest of us showed up shortly after 10 O’clock. Normally

COVERED BRIDGE TOURSATURDAY, MAY 12, 2001

we get everyone in gear 20 to 30 minutes after the starttime. However, Larry and Norm got 22 Healey’s and afew BJ9’s rolling right at 10:30 leaving our newest mem-bers Jerry and Veronika Walton behind searching for a

gas station. Fortunately, they had the tourinstructions and caught up with us a shorttime later.

Our first stop was at the home of Geneand Edie Tipsword’s house. Gene is anartist who creates and sculptures by weld-ing dissimilar metals. He has also re-stored over 43 Austin Healeys and Jag-uars. He was in the final stages of aFlorida Green Healey. It appears hepainted the barn with the left over paint.Or maybe the barn came first and theHealey was painted with green exteriorlatex. Who knows? Both Healey andbarn looked great.

Our next stop was just after passingthrough Gilkey covered bridge. Pictureswere taken of the bridge and a friskyhorse and we were soon on our way againtoward Scio and the Homestyle FamilyRestaurant for a cinnamon roll and cof-fee. From there we preceded to the

Larwood covered bridge, which crosses the Crabtree

Creek. Here we found several families enjoying the se-renity of Larwood Wayside Park. Serene at least until50 Healey nuts showed up. We minded our manners, took a few more pictures and were on our way.

After three more covered bridges and some beautifulcountryside we ended the tour at La Estrellita Restau-rant adjacent to the Santiam Golf Club in Stayton wherewe held our meeting and enjoyed some good Mexicanfood.

Thanks again Larry, Marie and Norm for a great tour.

John and His Healeys-An Infatuation Story

by John Rueter

Some time in the early fifties my wife and I were at achurch seminar in Tacoma where one of the other at-tendees had a new, silver-blue Austin Healey 100-4. Iattained an instant hate for him, in spite of the churchcredo. Then he smiled, adjusted his fine leather glovesand spoke of how his Healey would cruise all day at 100miles an hour, and I hated him even more, in spite of thechurch credo. Betty said, “John would like one of those.”And I hated him more, in spite of the church credo.

Several years later we moved to Portland as part of earn-ing a living. We had a 1953 green Ford two-door wagonthat I swore was the last Ford I would ever buy. Thenwe bought a Plymouth station wagon, the kind with thebig fins, and from front to back was a trip. Well, twostation wagons was a little too much so I went shoppingover on Sandy Boulevard for a VW that had been adver-tised in the Oregonian. The VW did not impress me soI headed past Rambo Motors on the way home and therewas a silver-blue 100-4! There was enough in the Fordwagon to make the down payment and I had some ex-pense checks I had not cashed, so I had the 100-4! Thiscar took me all over the state of Oregon, into Idaho andto the Columbia basin in Washington in search of peoplewho wished to freeze vegetables on the equipment I sold.I had the car serviced at The Auto Shop out on CanyonRoad near West Slope.

It was a scenario like this…A)Tune the car and drive toMedford for the week. B)Stay home for two or threeweeks to try to figure out what I did in Medford. C)Headfor Pendleton and Weston for a week then D)have thecar readjusted for a week while I stayed in Portland andtended to local business. I really don’t know how manymiles I put on that car, nor how many times I took it outto The Auto Shop. “Why did you buy a convertible inOregon?” someone asked. “So if the sun comes out Iwill be there!” I answered.

After many miles the early model 100-4 was exchangedfor a dark blue ’56 model with a double white stripe

down its center. This car had a better transmission andseemed to go quite a bit better. I toured the same areas.Leave Sunday evening after the kids were in bed anddrive to Pendleton, arriving at midnight. On to Ontarioin the morning. Sometimes I would come home on Sat-urday and stop for a quick fishing trip to East Lake as Idid.

Then there were three Porsches in 18 years and 450,000miles. The last Porsche was lost to a gal in a chevy vanwho wanted the same piece of road as I did - and took it.Both cars were lost. The insurance settlement eventu-ally purchased my third 100-4. Red, mellow in sound, but very unsound as a car.

We moved to Portland again and brought the 100-4 withus. Our friend Tom Monaco suggested a new set of tyresas well as practically a new side to replace the bondoand aluminum foil out of which the right side seemed tobe built. The car ran well and I took off to Indepen-dence to a Healey meeting at the Fox’s. On the wayhome, I had just exited at Exit 290 when I was coveredwith steam and the engine quit! Dead! A hole had bro-ken through the top of one cylinder and dumped thewhole liquid coolant charge into the crank case, and someeven out the tail pipe. A good Samaritan with a cellphone had AAA there in a moment and friend Bill Boltongave me three heads to have magnafluxed to keep thebest and return the others. I put on the head and away Iwent again. For some reason I sold the car to a Nikeperson who drove it to work daily. He sold it again toone of our members in Albuquerque, New Mexico. It isstill there, I think. It has been repainted black and red,new wheels, new crank and all that. And, a best of showat Las Cruces!

Tom Monaco said he had the car for me, so I said, “Sure, but it has to be running.” – and it has – and we have putabout 9000 miles on it and have enjoyed it and the Healeyclub ever since. Thank you. Now, if I can get the over-drive working again I’ll like it even more.
