2: Contemporary Architect Analysis Introduction:
This assignment will give you the opportunity to immerse yourself in the ides and work of a contemporary (since 1970) architect. You will conduct research into their philosophy, theories and projects. Your research should extend to the ideas that frame your architect, the movements that preceded your architect as well as those that are their contemporaries. Your analysis will include the architect’s relationship to the ideas of their time. You will create an annotated bibliography of your research. To be an effective tool it must identify those sources that were useful and accurate to you but it should also include the sources that were inaccurate or incomplete with an appropriate description.
Objectives:
Upon completion of this assignment students will be able to:
Research an architect’s philosophy and theories.
Evaluate sources for authority, purpose, currency, accuracy, and ease of use.
Prepare an annotated bibliography of sources including an evaluation of the source and a brief description of its content and the credentials and authority of the author.
Synthesize the architect’s built work, written and other statements into a cohesive and complete conceptualization of their ideas and their historical context.
Place the architect within their historical and architectural context
Analyze the architect’s built work to determine if and how it embodies their philosophy.
Organize your findings in a meaningful manner
Prepare an outline of your research.
Organize your research into an oral and visual presentation to the class.
Participate in a group to prepare a summary of the period/style/movement.

1. Review textbook(s), architectural journals, the attached list and other sources for possible topics. The architect chosen must have both a body of built work and a clearly articulated philosophy
2. Submit architect with a brief statement describing why they are significant and a short (3 sources), annotated bibliography to instructor for approval. Quality of bibliography will be used to determine assignment in case of conflicts.
3. Conduct research; use your initial information to lead to additional topics.
4. Identify representative examples of their work 5. Synthesize and organize information in detailed, comprehensive
outline 6. Complete annotated bibliography 7. Prepare group presentation of period/style/movement 8. Prepare presentation, (save and document images as you come
upon them)
