Dear Parents,

Welcome to the English Language Arts Honors Program at North Park Academy of the Arts!

ELA Honors is a course in which students are expected to work to their highest ability and demonstrate the maturity and independence required of an advanced academic program. Our focus is to prepare students for a rigorous high school English course and college readiness.

Please make sure your student has access to a computer, the internet, a word processing program, and a printer as these will be used regularly over the course of the year.

Students who do not maintain a C average and an S in citizenship will be removed from the Honors program and placed in a regular English Language Arts class. Grades will be assessed each quarter to determine if ELA Honors is the appropriate placement for your child.

Extensive reading and writing is the foundation of the Honors program, and students need to have their own books when novel studies begin. Although books will be provided, it has always been the better and preferred practice for students to purchase their own novels so that they can highlight and annotate during readings. As we move along during the year, I will send home a notice that gives parents and students the option of purchasing their own books. We do hope you consider the flexibility and freedom that owning the novel brings to your child.
