FOREWORD

19th and 20th highlights of gastroenterology and hepatology

This supplement to the Scandinavian Journal of

Gastroenterology is devoted to the proceedings of the

nineteenth and twentieth annual Gastroenterology

symposium ‘‘Highlights of Gastroenterology’’, and is

the sixteenth Gastroenterology Highlights sympo-

sium published in this journal. Previous symposia in

this journal were published in 1988 [1], 1989 [2],

1990 [3], 1991 [4], 1992 [5], 1993 [6], 1995 [7],

1996 [8], 1997 [9], 1998 [10], 1999 [11], 2000 [12],

2001 [13], 2002 [14], 2003 [15] and 2004 [16]. The

symposia have evolved as a valuable tradition in the

field of Gastroenterology-Hepatology in The Neth-

erlands, their contents reflecting developments or

areas of special interest at academic or non-academic

centres throughout the country. In all, 130 specia-

lists actively involved in gastroenterology, hepatology

or digestive surgery / gastroenterologists, specialists

in internal medicine, surgeons, paediatricians and

selected basic scientists / participated in the sym-

posium.

As with previous proceedings, this volume com-

prises a mixture of review articles and original

articles on topics covering various areas in the field.

In the ‘‘Oesophagus’’ section there are papers on

achalasia, gastro-oesophageal reflux disease, Bar-

rett’s oesophagus and endoscopic techniques for

diagnosis and treatment of (pre)malignant oesopha-

geal lesions.

In the ‘‘Intestine’’ section there are papers on

motility, small intestinal transplantation, various

aspects of inflammatory bowel disease including

clinical follow-up in Europe, remote monitoring,

osteoporosis, fistulation and prevention of colorectal

cancer, and a paper on radiation proctitis

The ‘‘Liver’’ section includes papers on optimal

therapy of hepatitis C, auto-immune pancreatico-

cholangitis, ascites and spontaneous bacterial peri-

tonitis in lever cirrhosis, diagnostic value of

fibroscan, biliary complications after liver transplan-

tation and diagnosis and therapy of benign liver

tumours.

The ‘‘Oncology’’ section comprises publications

on the staging of oesophageal cancer by position

emission tomography, laparoscopic resection of oe-

sophageal carcinoma, non-surgical management of

Klatskin tumours, CT colography for colorectal

cancer screening, hereditary non-polyposis color-

ectal cancer, and sentinel node staging in colorectal

cancer.

Including this supplement, a total of 315 papers

have been published in the 17 Highlights of Gastro-

enterology supplements to the Scandinavian Journal

of Gastroenterology published so far. Articles have

covered mainly clinical topics, while basic studies

contributing to the understanding of clinical gastro-

enterology, hepatology, digestive surgery and nutri-

tion have been included when appropriate for

clinical management. Over the years it has been

considered an honour to be invited to give a

presentation at these prestigious symposia. The

publication of these papers in an international

journal provides foreign specialists with an overview

of areas of interest in clinical research in The

Netherlands.

We hope that readers will find it just as interesting

as did the participants at the symposium.
