W E L C O M E . . to the second annual (!) Fringe Theatre Event - nine more days of colour and cultural chaos i n the heart o f Edmonton's historic O l d Strathcona district.

Last suiiirrier the Fringe featured 45 shows in 225 performances - and sold nearly 8,000 tickets...this year the RETURN OF THE FRINGE welcomes 65 shows (at last count) and over 300 {jerforrnances! A n d what a selection - there are new plays, exciting versions of old favourites, music and musicals galore, international puppets, mime, masks, dance and a wi ld array of spontaneous street entertainment. There are more performing spaces too - late-night venues and several tents. Something for just about everybody!

A few important things to note before you begin to indulge yourself:

* It 's the same set-up as last year - all tickets are sold at the door ( N O A D V A N C E SALES) and all ticket revenue goes direcdy to the artists themselves...but T H E R E W I L L BE A 50c S U R C H A R G E PER T I C K E T W H I C H W I L L BE C O L L E C T E D B Y V O L U N T E E R S A T E A C H T H E A T R E . * This programme is as up-to-date as we could make it i n advance, but changes and additions wi l l undoubtedly occur each day. Best to check the Princess Theatre lobby for up-to-the-minute information.

* Again , no artistic judgements have been made about any of the shows - you are the best critics, so i f you find a production you like support it by telling your friends. I f you've just sunk to the depths of theatrical despair, don't give up - find another show to renew your faith!

* Consider buying a Fringe Button. W i t h i t you ' l l get a bundle of Fringe Bucks for admission to shows of your choice, surcharge vouchers, a $2 discount on a Fringe T-Shirt, admission to the Fringe Refreshment Centre (at Chinook and the Design Workshop) and a chance to vote for the Fringe Awards to be presented Saturday, August 20 at 7:00 in the Princess. A great bargain at $20!

W e l l , we wondered at times whether or not it would ever happen again, but long hours and lots of support from the hundreds of artists and technicians and volunteers and staff and friends at SummerFest and the city of Edmonton and in the O l d Strathcona area have paved the way for the RETURN OF THE FRINGE. M y sincere thanks to all of them. . .

Now. . . i t ' s over to you, our audience - study the programme, select some shows and...enjoy!

p nncess Theatre The Princess Theatre is pleased to welcome back the wi ld and woolly excitement of The Fringe Festival!

From the start, the Princess was heralded as a special cinema house. Completed i n 1914 by John W . M c K e r n a n , a member of one of the oldest pioneer families in the Edmonton area, the Princess promised that " t h e main programme of entertainment w i l l be high class moving pictures varied with high class vaudeville and unusual entertainment" . (The Fringe fits right in wi th our historical spirit!) I n the early 1930's, the Princess was the first theatre i n town to show a " t a l k i e " . Edmontonians lined up for blocks to see The Canary Murder Case.

Now owned and operated by the O l d Strathcona Foundation, the Princess Theatre is a self-supporting, independent cinema dedicated to the best in repertory film programming. Some treats in store for you this autumn include: a major Ingmar Bergman retrospective, the films of Katharine Hepburn , a look at directors Jean-Luc Godard and Nicholas Roeg, many stunning Edmonton premieres, some long-lost Three Stooges movies unseen for 50 years, classic favourites, and much, much more! Also coming i n September is an all new, low ticket price of $2.50 per movie for Princess Members. Look for our new issue of the Princess Theatre film magazine August 20.

A n d have fun on The Fringe!

A CdCld Hall Acacia Masonic Lodge was instituted in 1897 by a number of Strathcona Masonic businessmen. The first Master of the Lodge was A . C . Rutherford who later became the first Premier of Alberta in 1905.

The Lodge over the years grew in numbers and activity, meeting in a number of locations on the south side. I n 1929 the present bui ld ing was erected by the Acacia Building Association as a permanent home for South Side Masonic and related organizations. Chinook Theatre Firehall #6 was built i n the 1950's. The bui ld ing was vacated less than a month ago when the City 's Fire Department moved to their new southside headquarters on 96th Street just south of the M i l l Creek bridge. Chinook Theatre now leases the bui ld ing from the O l d Strathcona Foundation and plans to convert i t into a 150 seat theatre w i t h supporting administrative and workshop facilities.

As well as providing a base for Chinook's highly successful provincial touring programme and the gradual development of our own in-house presentations for young people, we wi l l be opening the theatre for use by a wide variety of performing artists. I t is our intent to provide a comfortable, technical efficient venue at a reasonable rent so that even the smallest production can receive a first class presentation!

Fund-raising is well underway (all donations welcome!) and designs are being developed. W e hope to open Edmonton's newest theatre late this year or early i n 1984. A d d your name to the mail ing list i n the lobby and we ' l l keep you informed of our progress.

w&ltendale Theatre Walterdale originated i n 1959 w i t h a small group of amateur thespians and has subsequendy mounted a season of plays annually. Its audience appeal and community support have given it the much needed boost to survive financially and continue to grow. The first Walterdale Playhouse was a former one room schoolhouse on the site of the present Kinsmen Field House i n Walterdale flats and came into being in the Fall of 1961. W i t h the construction of the Field House, Walterdale moved to the former Legion of Frontiersmen H a l l i n 1966. However, its subsequent box office success created growing pains and it became increasingly evident that even larger facilites would be required. I n an effort to relocate, negotiations continued for three years w i t h the C i ty o f Edmonton after expiry of the land lease on Frontiersman H a l l , Finally, in the Spring of 1974, Ci ty Council authorized rental of historic old No . 6 Fire H a l l to Walterdale.

1983-84 is Walterdale's 25th season of theatre. O u r current president is V i v i e n Bosley.

The Design Workshop focuses on the exploration of architecture, urban design, landscape architecture, interior design, industrial design, graphic design and related design arts in Edmonton.

Outside of an office setting, there are few places where designers can drop i n and talk. The Design Workshop provides a place for members and others to drop in for coffee and share ideas about design. The Workshop also effects an interchange between design students and practitioners.

Communi ty groups wishing to deal w i th design issues in their neighborhood arrange to hold events at the Workshop. Members are invited to participate in design charettes and contribute to an improved urban environment.

T H E D E S I G N W O R K S H O P brings in or hosts exhibits of interest to the design community. Sometimes the works on display are for sale. Members receive discounts on purchases, and we always have a reception for the opening of a show!
