1935 The first Higher Education Institute in Ajara was founded in Batumi, offering 2 years program in 4 faculties.

1938 The institute was named after Shota Rustaveli

1945 Pedagogic Institute was established on the basis of the Institute

1990 The status changed to the State University

RSU joined the Bologna Process and currently offers 4 stage education program:
