    January THURSDAY 1 1863

    Very pleasant & cool. Cleared paths. Sawed theremainder of the wood in the wood house. Helped grindthe axe and bill hook &c &c & this P.M. have been in

    the woods with Father & Dea Pond. Trimed out smallwood. Meeting down stairs this eve. Jos. carried L.M.Adams home.Written on side: $26.48_?_.

    FRIDAY, 2

    Very pleasant & warm. Helped shell some corn & putup some & carried it to mill which took most all day.Went to poverty-lane but couldnt get it done, so wentto S. Burns in Bellingham. Called at Mrs. O. Adamses& got Lois A. Adams for Jos so to work there.

    SATURDAY, 3

    Very pleasant & warm. Thawed some. Worked in thewoods triming out small wood & helped father chop anhour or so on large trees. Divided the remainder of theapples &c. Carried Emeline & the baby up to Hermons& to Mr. Pherson & made a call. Jos. has been toBoston.

    January SUNDAY, 4 1863

    Very pleasant & warm but came up very foggy & dampabout 3 oclock P.M. Went to meeting in A.M. Went &got Aunt Patty & Mrs. Dunham. Emeline went in P.M.

    for the first time since she was sick. I stayed with thebaby. He was very good. Rev. J.R. Deering preached.

    MONDAY, 5

    Very pleasant & warm. Helped about the washingsome. Picked over some apples &c. Have been in thewoods this P.M., triming out tops. Father, Dea Pond &J. Pherson choped.

    TUESDAY, 6

    Cloudy most of the day & warm in A.M. (sliced or cut

    up my beef stake & had it pickled down in a stone jar&c &c. Drawed a load of small wood in P.M. & gotsome meat at J.B. Whitings for Dea Pond. In store some&c. Father, Dea. Pond, J. Pherson & I in woods to day.Jos drawed out wood this P.M.

    Janaury WEDNESDAY, 7 1863

    All sorts of weather, very windy & cold, cloudy part ofA.M. & squally, pleasant P.M. Onloaded a load ofsmall wood & went & got another in A.M. & got some

    into wood house & c. in P.M. Went into the woods &choped & sawed & c 2 hs, than we all went home.Father, Dea. Pond & J. Pherson. They worked part ofthe day. Carried 2 passengers off this eve.

    THURSDAY, 8

    Pleasant & Cold. We, Father, Jos, Mr. Pherson & Iwent into the woods about 9 A.M. & staid till noon.Drawed out some with the oxan. Father & Mr. Phersonworked some in P.M. Jos and I helped them at themeeting house in the eve. Tended the confectionarytable at the tea party &c. I cam & got Emeline &

    carried here home again. Very full house.

    Pleasant but cold. Have been helping clean the meetinghouse & c most of the day. Didnt get home last nighttill 2 oclock. Mr. Pherson & father choped some today.

    Counted the tea party money this eve, they cleared$64.00 or more.Cloudy most of the day & began to snow about 3

    oclock P.M. Cold. Chored about the house some. Wentinto the woods in A.M. & drawed sleepers togetherwith Jos. oxan 2 hs. In the store some & about house.Helped father load some wood for Mr. Pherson. He,Mr. Pherson, worked in the woods part of the day. Mrs.Chs. Wadsworth & Mrs. Winthrop here to day.

    Rained hard last night. Very pleasant & warm most ofthe day & very muddy. Went to meeting in A.M. Staidat home with the baby in P.M. & Emeline went. Rev. J.R. Deering preached; havent been this eve. Edmond

    has been here to day.

    MONDAY, 12

    Very pleasant & warm. Thawed some. Helped about thewashing some. Helped fix the horse slead & c. Father &Mr. Pherson worked in the woods part of P.M. I settledwith Dea. Pond to day. Have been at work for Hermon3 hs. this eve welding up old shoes & c.

    January TUESDAY, 13 1863

    Very pleasant & warm A.M. Clouded up in P.M. & thiseve. Worked in the woods back of old barn 3 hs. inA.M. Father & J. Pherson worked there most of the day.

    This P.M. I worked chopping birches &c. on theRockwood lot 3 hs. & helped Hermon 2 hs. this evewelding up old shoes.

    Stormy most all day. Snow in morn but turned to rain.Warm. Chored about home some. Worked for Hermon5 hs. to day & this eve turning shoes &c.

    Stormy all day & warm. Rain. Chored about house &

    picked over some apples & pressed out some cider fromthe rotten ones &c. Father went to Boston.

    Very stormy & warm. A driving rain storm. Walkeddown to Franklin to the Doctors after some sugar oflead for my *poison. I have got poisoned. Came back in

    the freight. In the house some. Fixed an axe & helpedfather some about making a bill hook.

    Very pleasant & cold. Am so poisoned that I couldntdo much to day. Have been in the house & store. Jos &Abbie have been to Boston & Father & Marianna toWoonsocket.

    Very pleasant & cool but thawed some. Have beenabout the house & store most of the day. Went to Mr.Phersons & made a short call.

    Cloudy & cool. Looked some like snow. Have been inthe house most of the day. Helped some about thewashing & taking care of the baby & c. In the storesome. Got in a little wood & did the chores &c 7c. Mypoison going fast. Jos drawed sleepers & father & Mr.Pherson worked there.

    Cloudy & cool, windy, began to storm (snow) about 2

    oclock P.M. The ground has been bare for sometime past. Have been in the house & store most of theday. Jos drawed sleepers. Father, Dea Pond & Mr.Pherson worked in the woods.

    January THURSDAY, 22 1863

    Stormy or damp & misty most all day. Have been in thehouse most of the day. Helped, helped grind a very dullaxe &c &c in the shop. Father shod the horse forward.

    Jos shod the ox slead & he & Abbie gone to the Teaparty at Medway to night with Mancy Daniels.

    Cloudy part of A.M. & very pleasant P.M. Warm &thawy, muddy. Chored about some in A.M. Went up toJos house & got some corn to full. Was sick in P.M.Emeline have me a rum or alcohol sweet. Was quitesick but am better this eve.

    SATURDAY, 24

    Very pleasant, warm & thawed some. Have been in thehouse all day but went out to go to Jos & to see to themail. Jos went to Boston. Feel much better thanyesterday but the poison is worse. Think the swet droveit out. It came out most all over me & my rist allfestered up.

    Cloudy most of the day & warm. Cleared off towardsnight. Have been at home all day.

    Cloudy in the morn but pleasant most of the day. Warm& thawy. Have been in the house most of the day.Helped about washing. In store some &c &c. Father &Mother went to Woonsocket. The Doctor called her today (my rist was so lame couldnt write.)

    Stormy all day, rain in A.M. Snowed in most of P.M.Warm. Staid in the house most of the day.

    My rist is very lame or sore so I couldnt write.

    January WEDNESDAY, 28 1863Stormy most of the day, mostly snow, but little fell.Have been in the house most all day. My poison is (_?_gaining), but my wrist is very sore and lame.

    THURSDAY, 29

    Cloudy part and snowed most of the day. Warm. In thehouse most of the day. Went up to Ms Moses and gotsome milk. Called in to Hermons and the shop awhile.Went down to Jos. Clarks shop a while this P.M.

    Very pleasant and cool but thawed some. Its quitegood sleighing but there is but little snow. Havent hadany snow for a long time before. Have been in the

    house and about most all day. Emeline washed, I helpedabout it and helped some about the chores &c. Fatherand Mrs. Richardson went to Woonsocket. Mother toMr. Phersons and Marianna to (_?_).

    Very pleasant, warm and thawy. About house andchoring around &c. in A.M. In P.M. carried MissCharlotte Fisher to Mansfield depot, went with J.R.

    Deerings horse and my sleigh. It wasnt very goodsleighing. Came back in the eve.

    February SUNDAY, 1

    Very pleasant, warm and thawy. Have been to meetingall day. Emeline didnt go. Rev. John R. Deeringpreached. Edmond has been here to day. Came with ahorse and (_?_).

    MONDAY, 2

    Very pleasant and warm and thawy some, muddy.

    Helped Emeline some about the washing. Carried 2passengers to Wrentham to R. Metcalfs. Went toMilford after Sarah Metcalf and Nora. Abbie went withme. Its poor wheeling.

    February TUESDAY, 31863

    Cloudy morn and began to storm before noon. ColdN.E. snow storm but little snow fell as yet. In the house

    part of the day. Went up to Mr. Moseses and got somemilk. Rode over to Mancy Daniels with Jos. Sawed andsplit some wood in woodhouse &c &c. Capt. J. Deandied this morn.

    WEDNESDAY, 48 below zero

    Very pleasant but very cold, the coldest yet I think.Havent done much today except the chores. Father hasbeen to Woonsocket and got a coffin for Capt. Dean.Jos. And Abbie gone to S. Whites Oyster - suppertonight.

    THURSDAY, 56 below zero

    Cloudy and snowed a very little most of the day, verycold. Went to the funeral of Capt. J. Dean, he was 79years old. Got in some small wood & c & c. My fingerand wrist is quite sore yet.

    Very stormy all day, rain. It has rained very fast mostall day. Warm. The pond is full, must runs over the

    road. Have been in the house most of the day. Cut alittle wood in my wood house and father cut somethere. Sarah has been here today and cut a dress forEmeline and Norah has been here.

    SATURDAY, 7

    Very pleasant and warm, thawy. Could do but little formy finger is very sore, but have been and got some milkat Mr. Moses. Chored about house some and the otherchores &c. Jos. and Abbie carried Sarah and Mr.Gilmore this P.M.. They went to Medway.

    Very pleasant, warm and thawy. Stayed at home allday. Emeline went in P.M. and I took care of the babyand Aunt Nancy. Rev. J.R. Deering preached. Myfinger is better today.

    February MONDAY, 91863

    Very pleasant and warm, thawy. Quite muddywheeling. Helped about the washing some, fixed the

    clothes (_?_) some and chored about. Went to Mr. R.Cooks and got some fowls (2 hens and 3 pullets and 1of Mr. M. Cox. Jos. carried a Bbl of apples to Mrs. (_?_) and then went to Mendon with Mancy.

    TUESDAY, 10

    Very pleasant and warm but very windy and verymuddy. Went up into the woods to see them chopping.Washed my sleigh and was going to paint the shalves,but the paint didnt mix good. Fixed some at old barnand chored about in the store some. Jos. been to Boston.

    WEDNESDAY, 11

    Cloudy part and very pleasant most of the day andwarm. Chored about some in A.M. and got ready andwent up to Mrs. Briggses to the funeral of SeillyDorwins little girl. Called at Woonsocket and got myhair cut &c. Abbie, Mrs. Richardson and Mrs. Deeringwent with me. Was very rough going and muddycoming home. Jos. went.

    February THURSDAY, 121863

    Stormy all day. Snowed part and rained some, warm.Went to Mr. Moses after milk but got none, but got

    some at J.B. Whiting. Fixed some shelves in the closetand chored about. Went to Mr. Deerings and got somecotton cloth.

    FRIDAY, 13

    Very pleasant and cool. Chored about some and wentup and turned shoes for Hermon. 2 1/2 hs turning 32shoes in A.M. In P.M. put up some grain and went toMr. Frosts mill. Mother went with me and stoped andsee Susan.

    SATURDAY, 14

    Very pleasant and cold morn, but thawed some. Wentto Boston. Stoped at Roxbury and went to uncleNathans and stoped a while then he went about the citywith me till past 4 P.M. Took dinner with him. Boughta cradle, wheels, shirts, cloth &c &c. Went and seeDarwin and Edmond.

    Cloudy and stormed part of the day, rain or mist, thawy.The snow is most gone. Went to meeting in A.M. andstaid at home in P.M. Rev. J.R. Deering preached.

    MONDAY, 16

    Very pleasant and warm, but very windy. Went to J.B.Whitings and got some milk. Helped about the washing.Cut a little wood at the door &c in A.M. In P.M. wentinto the woods back of old barn and cut and picked upold stuff and drawed home 1 load and father drawedMrs. Richardson 1 load. I fixed her fence some.

    Cloudy most of the day and chilly, yet not very cold.

    Worked in the woods back of old barn in A.M. cuttingfor rails & c. In P.M. sawed and split and got in the loadof wood drawed yesterday. Carried a passenger to Mr.Cooks in eve.

    February WEDNESDAY, 18 1863

    Very pleasant and warm. Worked in the woods most ofthe day choping and picking up the old and dead wood&c back of old barn. Tried the ice to see how thick, was

    but 6 or 8 inches.

    Stormy most of the day, rain. Went and got some milkat J.B. Whitings. Carried Elmira Briggs and Abbie up toHermons and to Dea. Whitings. In store some. Paint theshalvs to both sleighs &c &c. In house some.

    Cloudy part and pleasant part of the day and very windyP.M. Chored about some. Went up to Hermons and

    helped him set a large tire. Went to make a call on Mrs.Jos. Clark and Mrs. W.C. Whiting with Emeline and thebaby this P.M. Mrs. Clark was gone. Was very muddy.My left hand is lame.

    February SATURDAY, 211863

    Pleasant, but very windy and cold. Chored about someand cut some small wood at the door &c &c. (_?_)

    Fisher and wife and Julia and her 2 girls here today.This eve carried a Gentleman and Lady (_?_) toHolliston. Coming home I called at Martha Ponds andat D.J. Briggs a few, few minutes.

    SUNDAY, 22

    Cloudy and very cold. Began to snow about 3 or 4Oclock P.M. N.E. snow storm. Have been to meetingall day. Dea Pond took lead of the meeting. Rev. J.R.Deering is most sick. No meeting this eve.

    MONDAY, 23

    Cloudy morn but cleared off. Very pleasant beforenoon. Windy. Conciderable snow on the ground, but itis very dry and lite. Shoveled paths, cleared up in thecellar some, chored about house some. Went up in theother house and got some corn. Went to Jos. Whitingsafter milk and to the saw mill with Jos. Mahlon Danielspaid me (_?_.).

    February TUESDAY, 241863

    Very pleasant and cold morn but warmer before noon.Cleared snow off of the pond so to get ice. It is about 6

    inches thick. In store some. Chored about home.Shoveled the snow off of the hay scales and weighed aload of hay &c &c. The baby is very sick tonight.

    Very pleasant and warm. Set up with the baby till most12 Oclock. He was very sick all night. Went after theDr. about 4 Oclock this morn and got Mrs. Wilson tohelp take care of him a few days. He is better now. Ichored about house and about in A.M. Worked forHermon 2 hs. turning shoes.

    THURSDAY, 26

    Cloudy most of the A.M. and stormy P.M, rain, warmand thawy. Drawed 2 load of wood with the horse andslead from the woods, old wood &c. Helped someabout the washing. Worked for Hermon 3 hs. turning 40shoes. Went to W. Cooks after milk but got none. Gotsome this eve at J.D. Whitings. Dr. here today.

    March THURSDAY, 5 1863

    Very pleasant and very cold. Father and I went to thefuneral of Rev. Robt. Carver at Taunton. We went toDedham in the A.M. train and walked to Reedvill and

    took the cars for Taunton, got there little past 12Oclock. The funeral was in Mr. Mallards church at 2oclock. Was a prayer at the house of Mr. Brown. Westarted back at 4 Oclock.

    Stormy part and cloudy part of the day and very windy,snowed. Cold but thawed some. Cleared up the oldshop some. Cut some old wood &c. In there helpedshoe the horse. Went up to Hermons but didnt staylong. In store and house some.

    Cloudy most all day and a blustering N.E. snow stormthis afternoon and eve. Went to Mr. W. Cooks and gotsome milk. Fixed for and weighed 292 lbs of hay for J.R. Deering. Split some wood at the door. Helped grinda new billhook. Sawed and split a little wood in shop &c. This eve, carried Frank Peck home. The wind blewand snow (_?_).

    March SUNDAY, 8 1863

    Very stormy most all day. N.E. snow storm. It is driftedsome. Staid at home all day. No meeting to day.

    Cloudy in the morn and snowed some, but cleared off.Very pleasant and warm. Shoveled paths. Helped aboutthe washing some &c in A.M. and in P.M. worked forHermon 4 hs. turning shoes. Turned some ox shoes.

    Very pleasant and warm. Went up to Jos. house and putup some corn and father and Marianna went toWoonsocket. Went to Mr. W. Cooks and got somemilk. Marked some clothes for mother &c. Fixed a

    draw in the old shop &c &c. Alvah and his wife andboys came here to night. Father went to Wrentham withAlvah.

    March WEDNESDAY, 11 1863

    Snowed fast most of the A.M. Cleared off in P.M.Alvah and wife and children went home in morn.Worked for Hermon 2 hs. turning ox shoes. Chored

    about home &c some. Went to Franklin this P.M.Carried Hattie to her mothers and mother to Mrs.Farringtons and to (_?_) Fishers. Carried a watch to fix.

    THURSDAY, 12

    The best sleighing this year, very pleasant and cold.Went with a load of logs with Dea. Pond to mill. Thenfather and I drawed the load of posts from side of theroad to side of the farm back of old barn (woods) to fixthe fence with and drawed 2 load of rail cuts out and 1load of logs to mill and drawed back 2 load of sleepers.Mother, Jos. and Hattie went to Ashland.

    Very pleasant and very cold. Chored about most ofA.M. Went and got Dea. Whiting to come and help getice this P.M. We, Jos. Dea Pond, Dea Whiting and Iworked getting ice most of this P.M. It is about 8 or 9inches thick. Drawed it with the oxon. Father andmother went to North Wrentham to (_?_) Blakes avisiting with the horse and sleigh.

    Very pleasant and very cold. Worked on the ice most ofthe day and eve. Dea. Pond comenced about 9 A.M. andhelped the rest of the day and Dea. Whiting helped

    most of the P.M. Father drawed it with Jos. oxon andJos. and I packed it. Have got the ice house most full. Itis about 8 or 10 inches thick.

    SUNDAY, 15

    Very pleasant and very cold. Went to meeting in A.M.and staid at home with the baby in P.M. Emeline went.Rev. J.R. Deering preached.

    Very pleasant morn but clouded up before noon, but

    pleasant most of P.M. and warmer today. Helped takecare of the baby and about the washing in A.M., and inP.M. went and got a horse load of wood and cut a littlein rock wood lot, and went and got some milk at W.Cooks. Called at Hermons. Took Mrs. H.L. Bardonsnote for $2.00. Father carried her to Mr. M. Cooks andhome. Jos. been to Boston.

    Pleasant most of the day and warm. Went up to Jos.house and put up some corn and carried to B. Frostmill. Carried mother and Emeline up to Hermons.

    Sawed a little wood. Drawed 1 load of sleepers for Jos.Put up 6 bushls of potatoes &c. E and I went toFranklin with them this eve than I went with apassenger.

    Cloudy part and very pleasant part of the day andwarm. Went to Mr. Frosts and got the meal and someshavings. Carried my sleigh to Jos. Clarks to fix. Sawedsome wood at the door. Helped father get a load ofwood for Mr. Deering. In store some &c &c. Jos. beento Boston.

    Very pleasant but cold and windy. Fixed a chain &c.Went to Jos. Clarks and got my sleigh. Split some woodand cut some small in woodhouse. Cleared up in theshop some &c &c.

    Very pleasant but cold. Went up in the woods and allabout in the Rockwood lot to see about chopping somethere. Skinned a woodchuck and hooped a pail &c &c.

    Very pleasant and cold. Went to the saw mill andhelped Jos. onload a load of logs. Divided the beans&c. Went to Franklin with the handcar. Went afterwatch and glasses. Jos. and Wallace went with me.Trimed trees a while. Carried Abbie up to Hermons &c&c.

    Stormed in the morn (rain), but cleared off, very

    pleasant and warm. Went to meeting all day. Emelinewent in A.M. Mother took care of the baby. Rev. J.R.Deering preached . We went with the wagon for it ispoor sleighing now. Wet and slushy.

    March MONDAY, 23 1863

    Pleasant and warm and thawy. Helped some about thewashing &c and Father and I worked on my sleighfixing the shoes &c. Putting in some new.

    Cloudy most of the day, but has thawed some. Workedin the Rockwood lot trimming apple trees in A.M. andtrimed some about home in P.M. Went to Mr. W.Cooks and got some milk.

    Stormy and showery all day and warm, lightened andthundered this eve. Finished fixing the sleigh andsharped the pick and hook fork &c &c.

    Stormed in the morn, but very pleasant and warm afterabout 1 oclock A.M. Worked in the shop in A.M.helping father make a pail of tongs and weld up some

    old shoes &c &c. Split a little wood. Brought theremainder of the corn down from the other house.Trimed trees a little &c &c.

    Pleasant and warm but cool wind. Trimed trees part ofthe day. Went and got a load of sawdust at J.B. Wssawmill &c &c.

    Very pleasant morn but clouded up before noon and

    began to snow about 2 oclock P.M., cool rains thiseve. Finished packing the ice and put more sawdust onit and took me 2 or 3 hs. Chored about some. Pickedover 1 Bbl. apples. Worked in the woods 2 hs. Cuttingand picking up old wood back old barn. Took care Jos.cattle &c &c. Jos. been to Boston.

    April SATURDAY, 24 1863above zero

    Cloudy and began to snow about 12 oclock P.M.and stormed most of P.M. Worked in the woods back ofold barn in A.M. cutting and picking up old wood &c.

    Cut some at the door and got some into wood house andcut and split some. Went to the saw mill and got a loadof saw dust and put in the ice house.

    Storm most all day, rain and mist. Cool. Very stormynight last night. Went to meeting in A.M. and staid athome with the baby in P.M. and Emeline went. Rev.Jos. Deering preached.

    MONDAY, 6

    Very pleasant and warm. Went and got a load of sawdust at J. B. Ws saw mill. Started to go to townmeeting in A.M. Went as far as Nancy Danielses andcame back as it wasnt till P.M. Trimed trees &c someand went in P.M.

    April TUESDAY, 7 1863

    Cloudy and stormed this P.M. and part of A.M. rain andsnow. Beetled manure most of A.M. Began to clear upthe cellar. Went to the Parish meeting, was chose clerk

    protem and was chose treasurer and collector &c.

    Foggy and very damp morn and cloudy most all day,warm. We, Anson Cass and I pealed 5 telegraph poles.Churned, mowed the weeds and finished digging our

    Very pleasant and cool. Helped load a car of 50telegraph poles, 43 of ours, 1 or more hs. A. Cass,Hawkins and A. Greenwood and Jos helped. We sorteda few potatoes an hour or so. They worked in the woodsthe remainder of the day and I 1 hour. I went to thecider mill with a load of apples. Got them at Mrs.Shippies, 2of bushls, brought back cider, 2 bbls thiseve.

    Stormed before light, but cleared off, pleasant. HelpedA. Cass cart a load of wood to Mancy Danielses thenwent to Ms. (_?_) and (_?_) house and got some chores,

    table and stove and carried there than went to townmeeting, walked back and carried a load of apples tocider mill and brought back some cider, 2 cask.

    Very pleasant and windy. Helped get 2 casks ciderdown cellar, sorted a few potatoes, worked in thewoods some and pulled the beets, turnips and cabbage&c. A.
