THE LATE SIR DAVID HUNTER BLAIR, BART., OF BLAIRQUHAN.

We regret having to announce the demise of Sir David Hunter Blair, which took place at Blairquhan Castle on Saturday. Although the event has been for some time not altogether unexpected – his health having been for the last two years in a declining state – the removal of such a well-known and worthy person, happen when it may, scarcely ever fails to take by surprise those who have been accustomed for long to look up to him with respect, as one of our useful and active County gentlemen. For the lengthened period of thirty-four-years he discharged the duties of vice-Lieutenant and convener of the County; and it is so short since he retired from that position, and ceased to take the prominent share in all County matters for which his accurate business habits and clear discriminating judgement so well qualified him, and which had been allotted to him by common consent, that we may well be excused if we think and feel respecting him as if he had still continued to occupy the wonted conspicuous place among our local and resident gentry, which none could fill so well as he. In a more retired circle, the late Sir David was equally distinguished for those virtues which render rank and wealth esteemed. In domestic life he was exemplary to a degree, singularly attached to all his family; indeed, the lamented death of his eldest son, the late Colonel Blair, at Inkerman, was a shock from which he never wholly recovered. As a landlord, he was prudent, but always just and considerate. To his servants also he was especially kind, so much so, that if he ever parted with any of them it was with the sincerest reluctance, and there were few of them indeed but passed long years on his estate. While the many good deeds to the poor and dependent in the neighbourhood of the Castle will long preserve his name, and that of Lady Blair, in affectionate remembrance with the aged and infirm whom their bounty has closed – the young and ignorant, who through their attentions and liberality have been instructed. Sir David was the second son of Jas. Hunter Blair of Robertland, who, on marrying the heiress of Blair of Dunskey, took the name of Blair in addition to his own, and was created a Baronet in 1786. Sir David was born in 1779, and succeeded his elder brother, Sir John, in the title and estates in 1800. During the war he served as Colonel of the Ayrshire Militia, and was appointed to the vice-Lieutenancy of the County in 1822. In 1813 he married the second daughter of Hay M’Kenzie of Cromarty, by whom he had two sons – of whom the second, Edward Hunter Blair, Esq., of Dunskey, succeeds to the estate of Blairquhan – and one daughter; and in 1825 he was again married to Elizabeth, daughter of Sir John Hay, Bart., of Hayston, by whom he had issue six sons and two daughters. Both in church and state Sir David was a keen and consistent Conservative, but a man of much too large and wise a spirit ever to allow mere difference of politicl [sic] sentiment to interfere with the duties of public, or to disturb the amenities of private life. His death was sudden at the last, but exceedingly tranquil. The servant was giving him luncheon, as customary, in his room, when, taking alarm at a faintness which seemed to have come over his master, he sent to inform Lady Blair; but almost quick as thought and without a struggle, the vital spark had fled. The event has naturally excited much feeling among the parishioners of Straiton, where Blairquhan is situated, by whom Sir David and his excellent lady and family were justly and tenderly beloved. – Ayr Observer.
