CM YK 12A THE DAILY STANDARD, Celina, Ohio Thursday evening, October 9, 2014 By GARY R. RASBERRY [email protected] When the area football schedule was released, the October 10th matchup between Coldwater and Marion Local immediately was circled on the calen- dar as a must-see contest. Now that the 62nd edition of the matchup is just a day away, the game has immensely more interest and anticipation. Both teams, defending state champi- ons from a season ago, both top-ranked in their respective divisions (Coldwater in Division V, Marion Local in Division VII) are 6-0 and share the Midwest Ath- letic Conference lead at 4-0. Marion Local coach Tim Goodwin is excited for the game. “It’s easy to get (the players) ready mentally to play a game like this,” Good- win said. “We knew both teams had a lot back from last year and figured it would come down to something similar like this. You never know how it’s going to be. It’s fun that it’s here.” Coldwater coach Chip Otten is also ready. “It makes it exciting. It makes it fun,” Otten said of the matchup. “(The MAC) is on the line. We have three more games (after Friday), but to put yourself in the driver’s seat without a loss makes it a huge game. ... To get a home game (in the playoffs), we’d probably have to go 10-0. ... That’s certainly an incentive.” Coldwater holds a 32-25-4 advantage in the series, but the teams have traded wins over the last few years. Last sea- son, the Flyers jumped out to a blis- tering start and never looked back in a 47-14 stunner over the Cavaliers at Booster Field. Due to the schedule rota- tion, the teams will meet again in Maria Stein. The Flyers lead the MAC in scoring, averaging 45 points per game while Coldwater is fourth in the league aver- aging 29.3 points per game. Defense has strengthend the teams this season. The Flyers have allowed just 9.17 points per game. Coldwater is slightly better after last week’s 41-0 win over Parkway, allowing 9.0 points per game. The weapons Marion has on offense are endless, starting with quarterback Dustin (Doc) Rethman, who has thrown touchdowns on a clip of every three completions (16 touchdowns out of 48 completions). Wide receiver Hunter Wilker has a ratio of a touchdown every two comple- tions, snagging 24 catches for 649 yards and 13 touchdowns this season. Run- ning back Jacy Goettemoeller also has been solid, rushing for 575 yards and eight touchdowns. “That’s a heckuva matchup. Our skill guys against their skill guys are both really good,” Otten said. “Offensively, they’re kind of simliar to us. They use a lot of formations and spread the wealth. Wilker’s the guy who makes the big plays, but Goettemoeller can certainly run. I haven’t seen (Rethman) run, but they’ve probably got (a quarterback-run play) in there. ... The big tight end (6-7 Ryan Bruns, with 16 catches for 263 yards) walls people off and makes good catches for first downs. “The key is to prevent those long plays. Just from the three films we have, they had 10-12 plays going for 30-50 yards. Then you throw in the other game. You have to try and prevent big plays and make them work to earn those touchdowns.” Coldwater will counter with a offense led by quarterback Brody Hoying. The reigning MAC and state Division V offensive player of the year has snapped back after suffering a leg injury early in the Week Two contest with Bishop Hart- ley, which caused him to miss the game with Minster and limited him to two rushes — both resulting in touchdowns — against St. Henry. The Eastern Michigan-bound Hoy- ing, though, has been potent when on the field, throwing for 536 yards and four touchdowns and rushing for 387 yards and 10 touchdowns. The receiving options remain abundant, with Derek Thobe (19 catches for 286 yards and three touchdowns), Aaron Harlamert (17 receptions, 189 yards, 2 TDs) and Chris (Petey) Post (15 receptions, 162 yards, 2 TDs along with 332 rushing yards and four scores) joining Kraig Schoenherr (12 catches, 236 yards, 3 TDs), who has missed several games with an injury from last spring’s baseball title run. “Anytime you have a quarterback like that, it adds an extra dimension to your offense,” Goodwin said. “Having a dynamic athlete like (Hoying) that he is at any position, that would be some- thing anyway. At quarterback, it’s even tougher. “They have weapons. That’s what makes teams (like Coldwater) good. You just can’t stop Brody. They have a whole team. We have to play great team defense.” Defensively, Goodwin calls Coldwa- ter the fastest defense his team will face. “They kind of look like some of the Marion defenses with smaller, quick kids (playing) now,” Goodwin said. “They don’t have much size on defense, but they get to the ball extremely well. They’ve got a cou-ple dynamic kids. Mitch Fullen-kamp (48 tackles, five sacks) jumps out at you, then C.J. Seibert (69 tackles, five tackles for loss) jumps out at you, then you have Brody (24 tackles) and he jumps out at you. They’re very strong up the middle defensively.” The Flyers’ defense led by linebackers Joe Schwieterman (45 tackles, two sacks) and reining Division VII defensive player of the year Jacob Kunkler (44 tack-les, one interception return for touchdown). Otten sees a lot of similarities between the two teams’ defenses. “They all can run. They’re just fast (running) kids,” Otten said. “They maybe only have two kids over 200 pounds on defense. They’re like our guys. They all can run and are really well coached. They blitz a lot, but behind (the blitz), they know where the receiv-ers are. ... They play the right zones. They play the right man (defenses).

They rarely make a mistake and leave someone uncovered. It’s a great challenge.” As for intangibles, Goodwin knows that keeping turnovers to a minimum is a key. The Flyers have had struggles in the give-away-takeaway ratio, currently standing at minus-4. The Cava-liers are plus-3 in the turnover department. “You can look at our game last year. We weren’t that many points better than they were last year, but turnovers were a huge part of that game,” Goodwin said, a refer-ence to two Coldwater turnovers resulting in touchdowns in last season’s game. “We haven’t done well in the turnover margin this year, so that’s a big concern of ours.” Otten’s key is to make sure his offense gets positive yardage each play. “We have to try and eliminate the negative plays,” Otten said. “Marion is so good at getting sacks and tackles for loss. You’ve got to make positive yardage and keep out of those second-and-long and third-and-long situations.”
