The r e p o r t c o n t a i n s an e x h a u s t i v e overview on the s t a t e of b i o t e c h n o l o g y r e s e a r c h in West Germany. A h i s t o r i c a l survey i s fo l lowed by a d e s c r i p t i o n of the components of the Federa l Government ' s B io techno logy Research Program. The p r i n c i p a l p a r t s of the program are the promot ion of s c i e n t i f i c e x c e l l e n c e , improvement of i n d u s t r i a l i n n o v a t i o n , promotion of R and D p r o j e c t s i n v o l v i n g pub l i c l i f e c a r e , suppor t of young s c i e n t i s t s , and an i n t e n s i f i c a t i o n of i n t e r n a t i o n a l c o o p e r a t i o n . A survey of the f i n a n c i a l s e c t i o n on the s t a t e - o f - t h e - a r t of German b i o t e c h n o l o g y r e s e a r c h looks a t both the p r e s e n t s i t u a t i o n and f u t u r e p r o j e c t i o n s . D e s c r i p t i o n s are g iven of the r e s e a r c h o b j e c t i v e s and programs of the Center of B i o t e c h n o l o g i c a l Research a t Braunschweig and the I n s t i t u t e of B io techno logy a t J u e l i o n , as wel l as ' gene c e n t e r s ' and t echno logy parks in B e r l i n , Cologne, H e i d e l b e r g , S t u t t g a r t , and Munich.
