There has been a 84% increase in the number of prisoners returned to closed prisons in the last three years as a result of drugs and alcohol.
Drugs and alcohol make up 27% of all reasons given for moving prisoners back to closed prisons - second only to ‘Other’ category (32%).

There has been a steep decline in the number of people found guilty of selling alcohol to under 18 year olds over the period. From 331 in 2009 to 128 in 2013.
Similarly there has been a fall in those found guilty of proxy purchases for under 18s – 25 in 2009 to 5 in 2013.

Synthetic Cannabinoids
Twenty nine of the 81 new NPS reported to EMCDDA in 2013 were synthetic cannabinoids.
This brings the total number of synthetic cannabinoids reported since December 2008 to 104.

In 2010 at least 60% of opioid users in the UK were accessing treatment. The figure was just 12% in the Netherlands and 25% in Sweden.
