Dave says despite a financial hit the con- cert will be held again next year. Tourists are still flocking to Nelson and Tas- man despite a tough economic year and anoth- er Christchurch earthquake putting an end to some holiday plans, says Nelson Tasman Tour- ism chief Lynda Keene. Operators say the number of people holidaying in the region is about par or just slightly below last summer’s numbers and while that may not sound like good news, Lynda says Nelson is still a hot destination. “Traditionally a lot of Cantabrians come up on the 26th [of December] but a lot have obviously had to stay at home aſter the earthquake, so to still be holding as well as we are is good news.” Camping grounds spoken to by Nelson Weekly say they are on par with last year. Valda Hol- land from Tahuna Beach Holiday Park says at its height the park had 2300 people in it and numbers are similar to last summer. While the Christmas to early New Year period has been busy Lynda says the sector is expect- ing a traditional soſt patch until visitors flock to the region again in February. “ere’s no doubt we are still a favourite holiday destination for both domestic and international travellers and there is a very positive outlook for the next few months and beyond.” While people are still visiting the region it seems the effect of the recession is still biting with free activities very popular, including hik- ing, swimming and gardening. “Free products are getting a lot of interest which shows that people are very mindful of spending money,” says Lynda.

Nelson man using pedal power for final challengeHalf way through Mark (Hap) Cameron’s quest to work and live on every continent on the globe, he had dreadlocks down his back and a spattering of facial hair. Heading into his last challenge this year, the 29 year-old Nelson man expects to be almost bald.Hap’s eight-year quest is now somewhat fa-mous. After finishing university at Otago in 2003 he decided to live and work on every continent before his 30th birthday – 11/11/2011. With ten months to go Hap has completed most of his challenge, working in Asia, Europe, North America, South America, Australasia and Antarctica. This June he aims to tick off Africa in style. The theme for the African journey is sustain-ability, so he is planning to get to his new job on a bike. “I’ve travelled all over and started to think about the amount of energy I have used flying and especially when I worked on the cruise ship in Antarctica, so this time around I wanted to do it with as much human power as possible.”Hap has hooked up with Bikes for Human-ity, a Melbourne-based charity, and is raising money to pay for a shipping container full of used bicycles to be shipped to a village in Zambia. Hap and his girlfriend Mandy Todd will meet it there, cycling from Cape Town to the village, some 5000km. Once there Hap will give out the bikes to local orphans and aid workers and turn the shipping container into a bike shop where five locals will be trained on how to fix the bikes so the project continues to work years after the bikes have been delivered.Which brings us back to Hap’s baldness. To help raise $12,000 to pay for the shipping of the container some of Hap’s friends are or-ganising a fundraiser in Melbourne, where

he is based. It will feature all sorts of entertainment, including Hap getting the big shave if a movie trailer made for the trip reaches 5000 hits on his website.“I’m a bit unsure about it, but it’s for a good cause so that will get me through,” he says about going bald.Hap and Mandy will have their African journey doc-umented by award-win-ning film-maker Richard Sidey. Hap, who was back in Nelson for Christmas and New Years, estimates the journey will take sev-eral months, and after seven years of working to-wards his goal is unsure of how he will feel when it’s all over. “It will be strange, it’s been such a big part of my life for so many years now. But I’ll be pretty hap-py, it’s been a big adventure.”The journey has had its ups-and-downs says Hap, at one stage he questioned if he still wanted to do it. “Getting to Antarctica was so hard, for years I got denied and it sucked. For a while in South America I was so down and wanted to flag it. “Another defining moment was when I stayed with a mate from uni in Auckland. They were all getting into their suits and going off to work in their cars, I thought to myself ‘what am I doing, sleeping on a couch with all my possessions in one bag.’ I really thought about giving it away then as well, but I’m glad I stuck with it and this year it will be all worthwhile.”

The latest leg will quite possibly be the most rewarding as well says Hap. “I’ve done all sorts and been in all sorts of crazy situations and I’ve really enjoyed everywhere I’ve been, but Africa will be special I think, it’s the one I’ve always looked forward to and I really can’t wait to get there.”So far Hap has taught English in South Korea; tutored in Spain; erected marquee’s in the Unit-ed States (where he saw Michael Campbell win the US Open from a tree); been a fudge packer, nightclub toilet cleaner and worked on oil rigs in Canada; worked in an orphanage in Guate-mala; worked in the mining industry in West-ern Australia; as a dive master in Paraguay and was an assistant waiter on a six-star Antarctica cruise ship. Hap is still raising money for the shipping con-tainer of bikes to get to Africa, if you wish to do-nate money or follow Hap’s journey so far, check out his website, hapworkingtheworld.com.

Nelson’s new year was kicked off with some sweet sounds thanks to the Woollaston Jazz & Blues festival, which ended on Sunday. The week-long festival, now an intergral part of summer in Nelson, saw 60 concerts being held in parks, restaurants, bars, the museum, winery’s, paid venues and other public spaces.Festival organiser Rowena Richards says she was thrilled with the response to the festival. “It’s been a faboulous week, we’ve had so many peo-ple come through, at Fairfield Park we had close to 6000 people and Washbourn Gardens it was packed on Sunday night.”Andrew London of Hot Club Sandwich says his band has been playing at the festival for 10 years and this year was “the biggest yet”.

Local Brightwater couple Shane and Terri Gousmett have recently taken over pest control business Spiderban Nelson Limited. The pair say they can remove any type of pest from your home, but especial-ly flies, spiders and ants. They say the best time to have your house sprayed is between September and May making now the ideal time to give them a call and find out how they can control your pests. The business covers the Tasman and Nelson area, and the couple are hoping to build their client base in 2011.“We’re looking forward to being in the community and providing a friendly service to locals and proving that what we do really works,” says Terri.Spiderban Nelson Limited provides competitive pricing and a free quote.“A lot of services don’t do it, but we also

remove cobwebs from the outside of the house and go the extra mile,” says Shane.“We specialise in ant control, and have been specifically trained in this area, along with white-tail control.”A warranty is provided with spider con-trol work - six months for interior work and one year for exterior. The local couple are both approved chemical handlers and offer a reduced rate for group bookings.Customers don’t need to remember to call and make an annual booking; Shane and Terri say they will let you know when it’s time to spray again.Spiderban Nelson Limited is an ap-proved CRT supplier and offer a 10 per cent discount if you use your card.Visit www.spiderban.co.nz, call 03-542-2044 or 0800-111-778 for more infor-mation.

The next generation of life savers is hard at work and loving it.If someone goes missing in the bush anywhere from here to Haast, Nel-son Search and Rescue are sent out to look for them. But in order to keep Nelson Search and Rescue going, a group of teenagers aged 14-18 formed Youth Search and Rescue, so they can learn the skills required and carry it through when they’ve finished school. But Nelson YSAR are now on the lookout for new members and would welcome anyone who is keen to help out and learn skills that will help you and others in New Zealand’s natural environment. “It’s a great experience. You meet new people, and learn skills that will help you and other people,” says YSAR member Nicola Clark.Nicole is the only girl and says “it’d be nice” if a couple of others came along. Each week YSAR members get to-gether training. Throughout the year that training covers everything from mapping, compass, radios, GPS, first aid, search methods, and general bush skills and survival.Jayden Hughes says the best part about YSAR is getting out in the bush. Common searches include rescuing tourists who have gone off the track as well as looking for people with Alzheimer’s. If you’re keen, outgoing and would like to join YSAR you can do so by going to their website. www.NelsonYSAR.yolasite.com.

diaryThe Harbour Master’s

Dave Duncan, Harbour Master/Marine Operations Manager.

• Happy New Year to you all, I hope your boating ventures this year have all been safe and successful ones. • Here in the port we saw two super yachts, eight large fishing vessels plus several smaller ones, come and go. Five large vessels moved around to various bunker stations, four large container ves-sels, a bulk fertiliser ship, and a log car-rier kept the port operating.• A great number of recreational boat-ies have been out enjoying the settled weather when we had some. Don’t forget to keep a sharp lookout as there are sev-eral logs and other debris from the rain and floods still out there causing a hazard to safe navigation.• We have not had as much cause to speak to people this week due to their behaviour, on the contrary we have been able to congratulate some. Thank you all for that.• We have spoken to a few jet skiers this week. Please ensure you have an observer on your jet-ski IN ADDITION to the driver if you are towing a skier, biscuit, or wake boarder. A $200 fine could be the result if you don’t have one. Please also ensure that if you are skiing or biscuiting you are doing so in the appropriate areas. • Kite surfers – Please stay outside the Tahunanui buoys. Do not wave jump along the shallow water inside the buoys, to do so could be a $200 infringement.

Keep a sharp lookout this week. Have fun, watch the weather

If in doubt- don’t go out.

Art Nelson’s Queens Gar-den Exhibition has been a feature of the region’s sum-mer calendar for around 30 years. The showcase is set to hit the area this Saturday and Sunday, starting at 10am with free entry.Originally known as the Independent Art Soci-ety, the group has gone from strength to strength over the years and now has members numbering around 180.Group member and Wake-field resident Gary Gibbons has a passion for painting and is looking forward to showcasing his artwork this weekend.“As a member almost from its inception and a past president of the group, I have been painting for over 30 years. I still enjoy a painting that doesn’t have to be explained or analysed,” said Gary. One of Gary’s pieces, Frog Rock, is of an area in North Canterbury on the way to Christchurch. “It’s quite a well-known area,” said Gary. The painting was done last year and will

be among a handful of other creations for sale by the artist.“Painting is a very relaxing hobby, being able to use exciting colours to express your feelings for a particular subject or emotion. I now have paintings in many overseas countries including America and Britain,” he said.Anyone with an interest in art should con-

tact the group, as they hold monthly meet-ings, tutorials and painting days, along with providing opportunities to exhibit. Membership forms will be available from the administration table on the day.The exhibition can be found in Queens Park on Hardy Street, Nelson. If the weather is inclement, the exhibition will be held on January 22-23.

Trolleys in Nelson will get a makeover this weekend as the city’s Trolley Club hosts the first ever T-Day on Saturday. The day, a play on the successful e-day where people drop off old electronic equipment, will give Nelsonians the op-portunity to bring in their old trolleys and trolley parts, so others can breathe new life into them, ready for the Derby on March 26.Gilbert Robertson from sponsor Robert-son Chartered Accountants says the inau-gural T-Day will give people the opportu-nity clean out their garages and hand over their old trolleys, which will in turn give others the chance to participate.“Nelson’s recycle centre and the success of e-day shows that in general Nelsonians are good at dealing with household clut-ter responsibly by recycling,” Gilbert says. “T-Day is in line with this philosophy because it’s an opportunity for people to recycle their old trolleys while also giving others who perhaps may be unable to af-

ford ‘off the shelf ’ parts, the opportunity to participate in the trolley derby.”Nelson Trolley Club president, Tim Bay-ley says for the first time the club will also be running workshops in the lead up to the derby, where people will be able to se-lect from the trolleys and parts collected on T-Day.“We intend to run public trolley building workshops at a central Nelson location in February, so that our trolley club experts can help anyone participating in the der-by to build their own trolleys,” says Tim. “People can bring along their own parts to the workshops, with the added bonus of being able to select from the bits and pieces we hope to receive on T-Day.”For more information regarding Rob-ertson’s Trolley Derby 2011 go to www.derby.co.nz.• T-Day will take place on Saturday Janu-ary 15, at 6/2 Washington Road (near Rob-erts Kitchens at the bottom of Washington Rd) between 10am and 2pm.

Football fever hits NelsonAnticipation around Nelson’s biggest foot-ball game in more than a decade is expected to reach fever pitch even before Canterbury and Wellington take to the Trafalgar Park pitch this Sunday. And it is not just the game that is grabbing all the attention.Aspiring footballers will get a chance to be coached and play with Canterbury United’s key figures just one day before their ASB Premiership clash with Team Wellington.Nelson Bays Football has organised a fun day this Saturday for children aged 7-13

years-old, where they will be trained by na-tional league players including current All White Aaron Clapham and Nelson Suburbs’ devastating striker Gagame Feni.ASB Bank is providing prizes including drink bottles, bags and footballs during the fun day. Nelson Bays Football Regional Develop-ment Officer George Campbell says the training day is designed for the kids to have some fun and play some games, while getting a chance to meet some of the top players in the country. “They have an op-

portunity to be coached by national league players, watch national league players, and just soak up the atmosphere of what it’s like at this level,” George says.Young football fans will then be able to come along the next day and watch the big game for free as the gates are being opened for children, leaving organisers hoping for a family atmosphere. Two mixed Nelson under-14 sides will play a curtain raiser match at 11:45am. There will be face painting, Flossy the balloon lady will be making red and black inflatable hats,

and families are welcome to bring a picnic along to the match.George says some of the players involved in the curtain raiser will flourish playing in front of a pre-dicted healthy crowd. “It puts a little bit of pressure on them natu-rally. All of them have played rep football. But now they have to set a standard for people to be like ‘oh these kids can play’.”The main event between Canter-bury United and Team Wellington kicks off at 2pm and is the first Na-tional League game to be played in Nelson since Nelson United was dropped from the league more than a decade ago. The fun day begins at 4pm on Sat-urday at Trafalgar Park. Children wishing to take part should register at www.nelsonbaysfootball.co.nz. Kick off for the match is on Sunday from 2pm.

AThlETicS The Boar’s Jaw is up for grabs again as the NBS Nelson Strid-ers Half Marathon or 10km returns. The Richmond Rodeo Club has been running the event for 49 years and this year’s event is set to attract riders from all around New Zealand. Riders will be hoping to earn points by winning, which will go towards the end-of-season coveted Champion Buckles.

Can local farmer and councillor Tim King or Richmond Mall manager David Hill hold on to a bull the longest? A celebrity bull ride between the two will determine who has more staying power. Locals can also enter in the bull riding competition, either at the Richmond Mall by mechanical bull or on the day at the rodeo. Five lucky winners will receive $100 Richmond

Mall vouchers. Entry is $1 with funds raised going to the Richmond Mall Foundation. Trick rider Sonia Duncan will be performing on her horse Ace of Spades as entertainment. Sonia performs manoeuvres and stunts from a trick saddle and is sure to defy gravity on at least one occasion. Entertainment for the rodeo will provide hours of fun for the young people, with clowns and carnival attractions including a merry-go-round, pony rides and a large iron man obstacle course all set to go.If you start to feel peckish, there will be plenty of food and drink stalls available. The major feature on the day will be the Open Bull Ride. The running of the bulls will take place in the rodeo arena after the grand entry. The amazing ‘8 Second Bulls’ are travelling up from Rangiora to test the cowboy’s stamina and ability. These bulls have been bred especially for Rodeo riding and are, especially up close quite fearsome. Their names also give not only the riders but the

Two former Nelson Bays rugby team mates believe their playing experience can lead Nayland Col-lege to a credible debut Press Cup season.Kerry Shaw and Ant Holder will dually head the coaching staff, with the Nayland 1st XV set to open its Press Cup account against Nelson College on April 30.Both coaches come in to the Nay-land setup reasonably experi-enced as players. Kerry has made over 100 first class appearances for Nelson Bays between 1987-1999. While Ant is a well trav-elled player and represented the United States and Nelson Bays. “Kerry and I are from a back-ground where we’ve played at a reasonably high level. So we want to take that experience and want to put that into a structure which is the same as a professional rug-by team,” says Ant.As a coach, Ant has managed the Nelson Bays under-18 side in the past and was the assistant coach for Waimea Old Boys in the 2007 season. Kerry has been part of the Nayland coach-ing system for the past few years, coaching from under-15’s through to last year’s 1st XV.Ant is a former Nayland student and says he always wanted to put something back in to the school. “I think it’s a natural progression. If you’re a player and you’re still involved in the sport then coaching is that next stage for me.”Both coaches credit Nayland’s inclusion into the revamped competition to princi-pal Rex Smith and say manager Nigel Ri-ley and Paul Max have also been a huge

driving force in the successful bid. “The school is right in behind. Rex Smith is a mad keen rugby guy and wants to see us succeed. So we’ve got the full support there. What we want now is the com-munity to get in behind us and all the old boys to get in behind us,” says Ant.The Crusaders regional tournament will be split into two conferences for 2011 – Northern and Southern. Nayland, Nel-son and Waimea College will be part of the Northern conference.Nayland has landed the difficult task of

hosting champions St Bede’s College for their first home match in the prestigious tournament, just one week after the open-

ing clash with Nelson. The travel schedule, though, is quite favourable with only one trip to Christchurch in the first seven matches.Kerry says the boys will relish a chance to play Nel-son’s top sides for the first time in many years. But all the pressure will be on the Nelson and Waimea.

“There will be nothing worse than losing to a new team coming in to their competi-tion,” he says.

With equal opportunities across all codes, Nayland now wants to focus on retaining players from Broadgreen Intermediate. “I think Nayland has always had the talent there. But that talent has been snapped up by the bigger schools offering this opportunity [Press Cup]. The success will be measured in how we develop our younger players through to sen-ior level.”Nayland will also offer Rugby Academy as a subject. Taught by Brennan Geddes, the subject of-fers a maximum 18 NCEA cred-its. With an extensive international student program at Nayland, there is also the opportunity for-some foreign players coming to the mix for selection. “There are some that are eligible to play from overseas. We just have to make sure they are good enough,” says team manager Ni-gel Riley.“The big thing is we’ve got noth-ing to lose and everything to gain,” says Kerry.

Ant says they will not be “closing the book” on any second tier players wanting to come from outside Nayland. “We wel-come any player that feels they are good enough to play at that level.” Ant and Kerry are also open to year 13 stu-dents returning to school. “I think that’s a choice made by the students. There’s cer-tainly no pressure from us as coaches.”Anyone interested in joining Nayland Col-lege’s Press Cup campaign is welcome to turn up to preseason training on January 16 at 11am at the Tahunanui playing fields. Players can ask questions to the coaches, or they call or text Nigel on 0274470886. “There’s no politics, it’s just rugby. If you’re good enough, you’re there.”
