Friends Of Marlborough Library

Special ProgramThe Friends of Marlborough

Public Library are pleased to announce the next program of the Friends 2015-2015 Season –their 46th Year-on Wednesday, October 28th at 7 PM as they present “The Battle of the Bulge” with Dr. Gary Hylander, lecturer. This is the second program of the “2015-2016 Special Program Series” chaired by Peggy Ayres.

This past January marked the 70th anniversary of the end of the Battle of the Bulge, the last German offensive of the war. Over the objections of his gen-erals, Hitler ordered a massive counter-attack against Allied forces in the area of the Ardennes Forest. Hitler’s plan was to split the Anglo-American front and to seek a negotiated peace in the West. With over 19,000 Americans killed, the Battle of the Bulge was the largest and

bloodiest battle experienced by American forces in all of World War II.

Dr. Gary Hylander earned his Ph.D. at Boston College. His advisor and dissertation direc-tor was noted Boston histori-an Thomas H. O’Connor. He recently retired from Stoughton High School, where he taught AP American History, American Studies and the Presidency. He is currently an independent scholar who specializes as a presidential historian, pedagogical special-ist for the NEH and professor of History at Framingham State University and also is professor of History at Stonehill College, where he specializes as a Presidential Historian and in the Revolution/Federalist Era. He is a pedagogical specialist mentoring both graduate and undergraduate students at Framingham State College and Boston University. Dr. Hylander is a frequent lec-turer at library forums, histori-cal societies, senior centers and professional organizations and has appeared several times in the Friends Special Program Series.

This program will take place in Bigelow Auditorium at Marlborough Public Library located at 35 West Main Street, Marlborough. Admission is free and open to the public and the auditorium is fully handicapped accessible.

This program is funded and sponsored in part by the Ezra Cutting Trust-Bank of America Trustee, the Marlborough Cultural Council, a local agen-cy which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency, The Friends Memorial Fund, a gift from the Cummings Foundation in honor of Ginger Ryan and the Brigham Family Trust.

For more information contact: 508-481-7118 or [email protected] or Ray Johnson, Friends President, at 413-648-9663 or [email protected] or see The Friends website: mpl-friends.org.

Play it safe this Halloween with these simple trick-or-treating tips.

• Never trick-or-treat alone, and always stay in familiar neighborhoods.

• Carry a flashlight, and wear a watch you can read in the dark to obey your curfew.

• Make sure your shoes fit properly, and that your costume doesn’t drag on the ground.

• Make sure swords and other props are flexible, and avoid wearing a mask while walking.

• Wear bright or reflective clothing, adding reflective tape if necessary.

• Approach only houses that are lit, and don’t cut across yards or driveways.

• Stay away from pets. Even pets you know may not recognize you in costume.

Gaps in your coverage? Now that’s scary!

But don’t be afraid, we’ll help you do a double check.

Call us to review and compare options.

Sudoku

Here’s How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Fun By The NumbersLike puzzles? Then you’ll love sudoku. This mind-bending puzzle will have you hooked from the moment you square off, so sharpen your pencil and put your sudoku savvy to the test!

childcare is also provided and families are invited to join the social hour following the service.

The classes appeal to families who are looking for a diverse, inclusive, value-based faith com-munity, says Michael Packard, Director of Religious Education: many of the families in the reli-gious education program have come to Unitarian Universalism after being raised in other tradi-tional faiths.

“Our parents tell us they want their children to build a founda-tion in developing a deep under-standing and appreciation for those who hold different beliefs. We embrace and celebrate this diversity. Together, we explore the many sources and traditions of our Unitarian Universalist faith, search for meaning about life’s big questions, and take time for worship and reflec-tion. We value the uniqueness of every child and young person, encouraging creativity and self-expression as well as community building and service.”

In our informal class settings, Director Packard and his trained instructors seek to respect and develop each child’s sense of self-worth and individuality. “We strive for hands-on learning through experience, and when-ever possible, we bring our les-sons and beliefs into actions that reinforce positive community values.”

Bring A Touch Of China To Your Kitchen (NAPSA)-Chinese food is perennially popular among Americans. Whether it’s a casual dinner or a large celebration, the Chinese restaurant is likely to be a dining destination. Every region of the United States has Chinese restaurants, and some well-known dishes were in fact invented in this coun-try, such as chop suey and fortune cookies. Most traditional dishes are cooked very quickly in a small amount of oil and seasoned with soy sauce and ginger. The ease of preparation and the availabil-ity of ingredients is why more Americans are bringing Chinese cuisine into their own kitchens. An even easier way to pre-pare Asian food in your home is to use a ready-made dressing, such as Litehouse Sesame Ginger Dressing & Sauce. It combines fresh ginger, onion and garlic with rice vinegar, sesame and canola oil. Great for marinating chicken or tofu as well as on salads, it’s full of authentic flavor without MSG, trans fats or preser-vatives. Not only that, it’s low in calories and sodium. Sesame Ginger Lettuce Wraps 11⁄2 pounds chicken (boneless, skinless, cut into cubes) 1⁄3 cup cashews (or peanuts) 1⁄4 cup grated carrot 3⁄4 cup mushrooms (diced) 1⁄4 cup bean sprouts (optional) 1 can diced water chestnuts (optional) 1 head of lettuce (washed) 1 jar Litehouse Sesame Ginger Dressing & Sauce Spray skillet with cooking spray. Cook mushrooms and chicken until done. Add the cashews, grated carrot, bean sprouts and water chestnuts. Cook 2 minutes. Add 1 jar Litehouse Sesame Ginger Dressing & Sauce; heat through. Separate let-tuce leaves. Spoon chicken mix-ture into lettuce leaves, depending on size. Fold to eat. Serves 6.For more information and recipes, visit www.litehousefoods.com.

Memorial Congregational

Church In Sudbury“No matter who you are or

where you are on life’s journey, you are welcome here!” Join us for worship this Sunday at 10am. We will join together to sing songs, listen to the preachers’ reflections on the week’s scrip-ture and lean on one another and God in prayer.

Sunday worship service begins at 10 a.m.; youth from pre-K to 8th grade stay with their family in worship for the first 15 min-utes and are invited to leave wor-ship after the children’s moment to go to Discovery Kingdom where they use theater, art, cook-ing, games and more to further their understanding of the Bible. This fall we are studying the Ten Commandments and the two great commandments. Childcare for infants and toddlers is pro-vided every Sunday from 9:30 a.m. until the end of the service.

Many stories from our scrip-tures take place at a well. In addition to providing life-giving refreshment, communal wells are often the location of God-centered conversations that lead to deeper human relationships.

We gather on Wednesday nights at 7 p.m. seeking the same. Our time together is meant to build relationships and be refreshing. A variety of ideas are discussed including cur-rent events, theological ideas, and how we feel called to be “church.” We seek God through liturgy, communion, and other spiritual practices. Sometimes dialogue is inspired by sacred and secular music or video. We conclude with communion.

Everyone is invited to partici-pate as much or as little as com-fortable. Join us on Wednesdays at 7pm in the parlor of MCC located at the corner of Concord Rd and Church St in Sudbury. There is a seat at the table for

you. For more information, please contact the church office at 978-443-3885 or [email protected]

MCC is located at 26 Concord Rd (across from Goodnow Library in Sudbury) and is open to and accepting of all persons regardless of race, ethnicity, gender expression and identity, sexual orientation, age, ability, marital status or financial situa-tion. All areas of the building are universally accessible including the Church School wing, which is accessible by portable ramps present in the building. An accessible, gender-neutral, fam-ily restroom with changing table is available. For more informa-tion, please go to MCCsudbury.org or call 978-443-3885.

WINTER CAR CARE CHECKLIST

• BATTERY: Make sure terminals are tight and clean. If lights seem dim or vehicle starts are sluggish, have the electrical system, including battery, checked by a technician.

• RADIATOR: Check coolant strength with a hydrometer. Recommended protection level is -36 degrees. Never check hot.

• BELTS/HOSES: Check belts for cracks or fraying. Check hoses for leaks, bulges or cracks. Make sure clamps are secure.

• WINDSHIELD WASHER/WIPERS: Make sure reservoir is filled with washer solvent. Replace wiper blades if needed.

• FLUIDS: Check oil, brake, transmission, radiator coolant and power steering fluid levels. Follow owner’s manual directions.

• AIR FILTER: Hold air filter up to a light. If you can’t see through it, replace it.

• TIRES: Inspect wear. Check pressure with a gauge when tires are cold. Refer to owner’s manual for recommended air pressure and tread depth specifications.

• LIGHTS AND SIGNALS: Activate to make sure all work.
