LYTFC“Nothin’ But A House

Party” On October 24, 2015 with

the support of over 30 sponsors, Littleton Youth Football & Cheer is producing a concert “Notin’ but a House party” to benefit its mem-bership. The LYTFC program has built a tremendous reputation and has earned the ranking of a nationally competitive league.

As LYTFC has grown in its suc-cess, sending multiple football players and cheer teams to com-pete at the AYF/AYC National Competitions. The Cheer teams placed top in the country.

Memories of the 80’s & 90’s will fill the air and friends will hit the dance floor when The Fool’s (http://www.thefools-band.com) , Eddy’s Shoe (http://eddysshoe.com/) and Danny Klein’s Full House Band (http://

www.dannyklein.com) take the stage on October 24 at 5:00 PM at the Boxborough Holiday Inn (Boxborough, MA).

The event, “Nothin’ but a House Party” (http://www.notinbutahouseparty.com) will feature all three bands playing to a crowd that is expected to reach 1,000. The featured bands are both locally and nationally recognized artists for perform-ing favorites and renowned for their covers. And will be playing music from artists such as The Fools, J. Geils, Grateful Dead, Neil Young, Rolling Stones, Bob Marley, Peter Tosh and Frank Zappa among other artists from the 70’s, 80s and 90s.

“Nothin’ But a House Party” will feature both food and drink concessions and general seating. Tickets are limited. Price per tick-et is $35 for general admission/non-reserved seating and can be purchased online at www.notin-butahouseparty.com.

Both The Fools and Danny Klein have long standing careers in the music industry and have earned their spot as major nation-al performers. Both have roots and got their start in here in the Boston area.

The headlining band The Fools have had several hits that made Billboards Top 100 and have per-formed on US Tours with The Knack, Van Halen, Rush, Joan Jet and more. There full bio can be seen (http://www.thefools-band.com/html/museum.htm). The scintillating lead singer of THE FOOLS has a new project, his band Mike Girard’s Big Swing Thing. It’s A BIG BAND but it’s not your typical Big Band. It’s ROCK & ROLL with HORNS… A ton of them! They have been preforming sold out show throughout New England

Danny Klein is the founding member of the J. Geils band and is returning from the J. Geils national concert. His Band Danny Klein’s Full house will be pre-forming a show that celebrates the music of the J. Geils Band. Having the luxury of being in both the J. Geils Band and Danny Klein’s Full House Band keeps Danny Klein doing what he loves best, continuing to put his criti-cally acclaimed licks on music he enjoys.

Unique Concert Video On Local Cable

During the months of September and October 2015 the communities of Berlin, Bolton, Boylston, Clinton, Holden, Hudson, Lancaster, Marlborough, Northborough, Shrewsbury, Southborough, Sterling, West Boylston, Westborough and Worcester will include in their local cable TVschedules show-

ings of a professionally prepared video of “Annelies”, a dramatic oratorio based on the “Diary of Anne Frank.” Composer James Whitbourn and librettist Melanie Challenger collaborated in 2005 to create a sympathetic reflec-tion of Anne’s written words, in which excerpts of her diary are woven together--- peaceful peeks of nature from her window contrasting with her sorrowful awareness of hungry children,

Jews being arrested, and her fear of the family’s capture, in addi-tion to the sound of nearby church bells and folk songs remembered from her childhood. Particularly effective is the use of an exten-sive percussion section in the full orchestra accompanying the Assabet Valley Mastersingers with Artistic Director Robert P. Eaton.

Enjoyment of the concert may be enhanced by printing the words to be found online by searching ‘Annelies text’. Soprano Lynn Eustis flawlessly voices Anne’s thoughts without benefit of a score at hand. Members of the Shir Joy Chorus of Westborough (Wendy Damoulakis, Director) sing portions of the concert with AVM. A brief introduction to the video by Dr. Joshua Jacobson of Northeastern University adds insight and includes a vir-tual tour of the Frank family’s hiding place for two years in Amsterdam. In the time between the 13th and 15th birthdays of Annelies Marie Frank she never allowed herself to lose hope in the basic goodness of people and could still find joy in the glimpse of a blue sky above.

Tom Morgan of Westborough

WTV is videographer and pro-ducer in collaboration with Josef Reznicek of Bostonia Records for sound record-ing. Information about Assabet Valley Mastersingers may be found at www.AVMsingers.org or by calling (978) 562-9838.

AVCC Presents: What Do Judges Look For?

On Wednesday, October 7, the Assabet Valley Camera Club (AVCC) will host a presentation by Maureen and Todd Mathieson exploring what judges look for when they evaluate photograph-ic images. All photographers will find this interesting.

Maureen, who is now the club’s historian, joined AVCC in 1994 and held the office of president for 4 years. She has obtained judges for the club and was liaison for internation-al salon competitions and for the River’s Edge Arts Alliance. Todd joined the club in 2000, and he also served as president

for 4 years. He coordinates the club’s annual Photo Ops day, with a specialty in black light or unusual, exciting set-ups. Together the couple has served as liaison to the Friends of the Marlborough Public Library, which co-hosts an annual print exhibit.

The Mathiesons are both members of Photographic Association of America. For their service to the New England Camera Club Council and to local clubs where they serve as judges, last year they were awarded the MNEC (Master Member, New England Camera Club Council).

Their program is open to all, and admission is free. AVCC welcomes both new and pro-spective members. We meet at 7:30 PM the first and third Wednesdays of each month from now through June. Meetings are held at the Hudson Senior Center, 29 Church St., Hudson. For more information, contact Liz West (978) 263-2853.

Marlborough Rotary Club Wants Your

JUNK!The Marlborough Rotary Club

invites one and all from all sur-rounding communities to clean out their attics or basements and get rid of their junk at the club’s Recycling event on Saturday, October 19, 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., at the Whitcomb Middle School in Marlborough.

Since fall 2011, the members of the Marlborough Rotary Club have suggested that members of the greater Marlborough com-munity could rid themselves of all that junk they were finding during fall and spring cleaning for a modest price per car or compact truckload. They created a one-day project to recycle all the unwanted computers, elec-tronics, appliances, and more. The event, open to ALL com-

munities, brought hundreds of carloads of household items to be recycled rather than added to landfills.

Almost everything that had been sitting around in attics, basements, or garages could be recycled at this Recycling Day event for just $30 per car load or truck load. Items include:

Electronics of all types – com-puters, CPUs, games, accesso-ries, cell phones, VCRs laptops, cameras, cables, wires, key-boards, mice

All electrical equipment – small appliances, motors, shop equipment, heaters, fans, exten-sion cords, lamps

Vehicle batteriesLarge appliances – washers,

dryers, microwaves, AC units, freezers, refrigerators with Freon

Yard and lawn equipment – mowers and snow blowers (no fluids)

Metal and plastic – children’s toys, yard furniture

Televisions – priced per screen size

Computer Monitors - $15 each“We have been so excited

about this event!” remarked Elaine McDonald who started the event. “This project benefits everyone involved. People can rid themselves of all their metal and plastic junk; gain space in their homes for a very low cost; the environment is better for recycling all this junk; and the Marlborough Rotary Club Foundation will make a percent-age of the fees to continue the club’s service to children and families of our community, lit-eracy projects, clean water proj-ects, and more.”

“The beauty of this project,” noted current Club President Michael Lashua, “is that it is both a service project and a fun-draiser. Even when the funds raised were minimal, we knew that we had made a positive impact on the environment of our community.”

“The environmental impact keeps growing year after year. As of our spring recycling event, we have recycles 58, 291 pounds – or almost 30 tons! That’s huge,” McDonald concluded.

So, save the date! It’s Saturday, October 17, 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., at the Marlborough’s

Whitcomb Middle School.Since 1922, the Rotary Club

of Marlborough has supported the youth and charitable organi-zations of our community and the Rotary Foundation’s efforts to enhance our world.

for a program to be held at the Goodnow Library, 21 Concord Rd, Sudbury where Joel M. Ristuccia and Stephanie Howard will be the panelists for a discus-sion entitled

“Continuing the Conversation: Helping Children and Youth Learn to Cope with

Common Childhood Challenges.”

These challenges typically include experiences of sudden change, loss, failure, shame and rejection which can have trau-matic impact on young people. Helping kids learn to cope with these “normal” traumatic experi-ences can build deep self-confi-dence and resilience and prevent

future extreme pain and harm.Stephanie Howard, Ph.D., is

a licensed clinical psychologist and director of “Project We Can Talk About It,” the domestic vio-lence team at Children’s Charter, a division of The Key Program, Inc. She has provided training and consultation to DV and DA advocates, daycare and school teachers, DCF social workers, police officers and court person-nel.

Joel M. Ristuccia, Ed.M., is a certified School Psychologist with over twenty five years’ experience in the public schools.

He has consulted on the impact of trauma on student learning to the Trauma and Learning Policy Initiative and is co-author of “Helping Traumatized Children Learn.” Additionally he has con-sulted to the MGH Department of School Psychiatry, and nationally on the impact of trau-ma on learning and on the role of trauma in student behaviors than can lead to punitive discipline and school failure.

Compassion & Justice Book Discussion

GroupAll are welcome to join in

this fall’s Compassion & Justice Book Discussion Group at the Unitarian Church of Marlborough and Hudson. Participants will read books on themes that help to build capac-ity for compassion, to respond to current justice issues, and to

delve into what it means to be human in today’s world. The October reading will be “Waking Up White,” by Debby Irving. For 25 years, Debby Irving sensed inexplicable racial tensions in her personal and professional relationships. Then, in 2009, one “aha!” moment launched an adventure of discovery and insight that drastically shifted her worldview and upended her life plan. In “Waking Up White,”

Irving tells her often cringe-wor-thy story with such openness that readers will turn every page rooting for her-and ultimately for all of us. The November book will be the UUA Common Read, “Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption,” by Bryan Stevenson. “Just Mercy” is at once an unforgettable account of an idealistic, gifted young law-yer’s coming of age, a moving window into the lives of those he has defended, and an inspir-ing argument for compassion in the pursuit of true justice. From one of the most brilliant and influential lawyers of our time, it is a powerful true story about the potential for mercy to

redeem us, and a clarion call to fix our broken system of jus-tice.The Rev. Alice Anacheka-Nasemann, Roberta Altamari, and Elisa Abatsis will lead the talks from 7 to 9 pm on Tuesday, Oct. 20 (“Waking Up White”) and on Tuesday, Nov. 17 (“Just Mercy”). The books are available at the Hudson Public Library on the Book Club bookshelf. For more information, please visit ucmh.org or call 978-562-9180.

of Sudbury is hosting a Golf Tournament Fundraiser on Monday, October 19th at the Wayland Country Club, 121 Old Sudbury Road, Route 27, in Wayland.

To register for the tournament, or to be a sponsor, go to www.saveadog.org and click on the link.

Save A Dog Humane Society of Sudbury, incorporated in 1999, is an all-breed Dog Rescue and Adoption Facility. It is a private 5013c3 non-profit orga-nization that relies solely on its volunteers, fundraising events, and private donations. To date, over 5000 dogs have been res-cued and placed in permanent and loving homes.

This year, the organization is in the final stages of purchasing the property it has been renting for the last 8 years. Proceeds from the tournament will ben-

efit the capital campaign fund to help meet the purchase price, in addition to helping offset medi-cal expenses for some of the dogs in order to prepare them for adoption.

One such recent dog is Riley, a beautiful little 3-year old Min Pin who is partially blind due to untreated dry eye. She is lovely and very smart. She can be timid around big men, but comes around when she knows they are dog friendly. Hikes, walks, canoe and kayak are all her favorite things, plus being cuddled. She does rely on voice recognition to know who is who, and has an excellent memory for it as well as smells of places she has been. She does need daily care and medicine for her eyes.

October Film SeriesAll are welcome to join in

the October film series being held at the Unitarian Church of Marlborough and Hudson. The month’s theme is multicultural-ism and diversity, and the films have been chosen because they are thought-provoking, inspiring,

and sometimes heartwarming. After each movie participants will have a brief period of dis-cussion as they seek to deepen their learning and understanding of the major themes presented. Movies will be shown on a (rela-tively) big screen in the church’s Sanctuary. At 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 16, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas will be shown for adults. On Sunday, Oct. 25, at 6:30 p.m. older teens are invited for pizza

and discussion of a viewing of The Boy in the Striped Pajamas. Seniors are invited to watch The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 28. For more information, please visit ucmh.org or call 978-562-9180.

Memorial Congregational

Church In Sudbury“No matter who you are or

where you are on life’s journey, you are welcome here!” Join us for worship this Sunday at 10am. We will join together to sing songs, listen to the preach-ers’ reflections on the week’s scripture and lean on one anoth-er and God in prayer.

Sunday worship service begins at 10 a.m.; youth from pre-K to 8th grade stay with their family in worship for the first 15 minutes and are invited to leave worship after

the children’s moment to go to Discovery Kingdom where they use theater, art, cooking, games and more to further their understanding of the Bible. This fall we are studying the Ten Commandments. Childcare for infants and toddlers is provided every Sunday from 9:30 a.m. until the end of the service.

Many stories from our scrip-tures take place at a well. In addition to providing life-giving refreshment, communal wells are often the location of God-centered conversations that lead to deeper human relationships.

We gather on Wednesday nights at 7 p.m. seeking the same. Our time together is meant to build relationships and be refreshing. A variety of ideas are discussed including cur-rent events, theological ideas, and how we feel called to be “church.” We seek God through liturgy, communion, and other spiritual practices. Sometimes dialogue is inspired by sacred and secular music or video. We conclude with communion.

Everyone is invited to partici-pate as much or as little as com-fortable. Join us on Wednesdays at 7pm in the parlor of MCC located at the corner of Concord

Rd and Church St in Sudbury. There is a seat at the table for you. For more information, please contact the church office at 978-443-3885 or [email protected]

MCC is located at 26 Concord Rd (across from Goodnow Library in Sudbury) and is open to and accepting of all persons regardless of race, ethnicity, gender expression and identity, sexual orientation, age, abil-

ity, marital status or financial situation. All areas of the build-ing are universally accessible including the Church School wing, which is accessible by portable ramps present in the building. Story Of Civil War Regiment

Did you know that an infantry regiment of about 1,000 men trained at what was once called Groton Junction, now Ayer, and fought in the Civil War with the Union’s Third Army to clear Confederate troops out of the Mississippi River basin in Louisiana? To find out about this regiment, the 53rd Massachusetts Volunteers, who trained at Camp Stevens, come to the Fort Devens Museum on Saturday October 17th.

Many of the men of the 53rd were recruited from local com-munities - Ashby, Fitchburg, Groton, Harvard, Lancaster,

Leominster, Lunenburg, Pepperell, Townsend, and Westford - in addition to a large number from towns west as far as Gardner, south to Sterling and Clinton, and a few from the Boston area.

Camp Stevens was located on a wedge of land bounded by Old Fitchburg Road (near a reconfigured present-day Fitchburg Road, Route 2A), the Nashua River, and the tracks of the old Peterborough and Shirley Railroad (which extend-ed only as far as Greenville, New Hampshire, from Ayer). The camp, named after Major general Isaac Ingalls Stevens of Andover, who died in a Civil War battle in Virginia, was also

located next to what would later become the Fort Devens airfield.

Hear the saga of the 53rd, including the trials and tribula-tions of travel by train and steam-boats to the New Orleans area, the regiment’s battle campaign up through northern Louisiana, and the eventual trip home by Mississippi steamboat and trains. It was an adventure fraught with danger and disease, altogether different for these Massachusetts farmers and craftsmen.

Telling this story will be Barry E. Schwarzel of Ayer. For six years he served with the Army Reserves in the 187th Infantry Brigade stationed at Fitchburg and subsequently at Fort Devens, reaching the rank of Staff Sergeant. After the Army, he worked for 26 years at Digital Equipment Corporation, and for two years operated a diner at the Shirley/Lancaster town line.

The program starts at 1:00 PM on October 17th at the museum, which will be open from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM on that day. The museum is located on the third floor at 94 Jackson Road, Devens and is wheelchair acces-sible. This event is free and open to the public and light refresh-ments will be served. For more information please contact the Fort Devens Museum at 978-772-1286 or [email protected].

Why? Does It Matter? This Sunday, Oct. 4, join the

congregation at First Parish of Sudbury to explore the Golden Circle, what is it, why it matters and how it defines our lives from marketing to meditation. Have you ever stopped and wondered

“why” we do the things that we do or why we say the things that we say or why we feel so passionate about the concerns and causes that we support? The “why” we do something is far more important than the “how” we do it or “what” we actu-ally do. Friedrich Nietzsche once shared that, “He who has a why to live can bear almost any how.” What is your “why” and how can you connect it to the way that you live fully into your life? Rev. Dr. Marjorie Matty will consider the theory of the Golden Circle and the implications of under-standing how it affects us in our daily lives.

Religious Exploration, led by our new director Chris Scheller, for children and teens takes place concurrently with the adult wor-ship service. Children and teens begin in the worship service, and then go off to their own fun and interesting program of religious exploration. This Sunday at First Parish Sudbury children aged 6-months to 4 are invited to play in our nursery, children 4-6 are invited to our Spirit Play class, where we will be introducing our seven rainbow principles through story-telling, creative play, and arts and crafts. Older children still in grade school are invited to join our Sing to the Power class, where we will be explor-ing how we can create positive change in the world through the power of connection. 7th and 8th graders are invited to join the Breakfast Club. The high school youth group will meet at noon, after social hour.

First Parish of Sudbury is a Unitarian Universalist congre-gation located at 327 Concord Road. We embrace diversity and

Fort Devens MuseumAre you ready for two days

in Venice and two weeks in Northern Italy and Slovenia? Hemingway’s “Farewell to Arms” is the geographic setting for this proposed trip during May 11-25, 2016. We intend to visit many World War I interesting and scenic sites such as Venice, Cortina, Asolo, Caporetto

Slovenia, and enjoy the best of cuisines and wines of the Friuli and Veneto areas.

Ellie Buford, a former Harvard resident now living in the area to be visited, is an expe-rienced traveler and will be the tour director. Viaggi Unlimited Travel in Aviano, Italy, will handle all travel arrangements. Local guides will accompany the twenty-two travelers to the vari-ous sites, museums, and monu-ments.

Camp Devens was established in 1917 when the United States entered World War I, and two infantry divisions and many smaller units trained here en route to overseas locations. For

people in Europe, World War I began earlier in 1914. Europe has already started commemorat-ing the centennial of that Great War. While the soldiers who trained at Camp Devens fought on the Western Front in France, this trip offers the opportunity to view Italy’s enduring landscape further east and to recognize the sacrifices and challenges in war during the era.

A $100 donation to the Fort

Devens Museum must be made no later than November 1, 2015, to be one of the twenty-two trav-elers. For additional informa-tion, itinerary, and price please contact Kara Fossey at the Fort Devens Museum at 978-772-1286 or email [email protected]; or contact Duane Barber at 978-456-8847 or email [email protected].

Leeber, President and CEO, Marlborough Regional Chamber of Commerce and Jackie Smith, Heritage Festival Coordinator will present Pauline Smith with the 2015 Marlborough Heritage Herorine award at the Heritage Festival, Sunday, October 25th at 10:00am in front of City Hall.

As a longtime Marlborough resident, Pauline has selflessly volunteered her time and efforts for countless community organi-zations and events. She has been highly involved with the City of Marlborough since the 1970’s and continues to do so.

Pauline had worked with many of the Mayoral Campaigns in the City. The Marlborough Regional Chamber of Commerce would not have been able to success-fully have an award winning float for the past few years in the Labor Day Parade with-out Pauline! We are proud to honor Pauline Smith as the 2015 Heritage Heroine.

The 20th Annual Marlborough Heritage Festival will be held on Sunday, October 25th from 10:00am. to 3:00pm. Greetings of praise in sev-eral languages will be heard when Sudbury United Methodist Church (SUMC) joins the globe in the 75th World Wide Communion Sunday on Oct. 4. Rev. Sudoku

Here’s How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Fun By The NumbersLike puzzles? Then you’ll love sudoku. This mind-bending puzzle will have you hooked from the moment you square off, so sharpen your pencil and put your sudoku savvy to the test!

Miles And Smiles For Michaella

Miles and Smiles for Michaella is a memorial event created in loving memory of Michaella Walsh Libby. It is a chance for her friends and family to come together to celebrate her short but giving life.

Michaella was a 2010 gradu-ate of Hudson High School where she was an honor roll student and athlete. She was a sophomore at the University of Maryland majoring in Public Health. She had a passion for helping others, which was reflected in her involvement with Peer Mediation, tutoring inner city children in Washington DC, and her participation in Students Helping Honduras. She was a member of AOPII sorority and Primannum Honor Society.

Inspired by her love of fash-ion, the day will start with a high heeled dash for those brave enough to run in their stilettos. Immediately following the dash, everyone is encouraged to par-ticipate in a 3.2 mile memorial walk/run. Like last year, we will also offer the “Michaella Mile” for those, like Michaella, who enjoy a shorter walk. There will

be raffles, kid’s activities, and Michaella’s favorite music.

This year we will be doing a loose change collection with all proceeds going to the Childrens Home in Honduras.

Proceeds from the walk will help fund 2 scholarships in her name. One at the AOII Sorority at University of Maryland and another to a Hudson High School Student.

Fats And Oils In A Healthy Diet

(NAPSI)—Health risks asso-ciated with trans fat consumption have remained a topic of con-cern over the last several years. Excessive intake of trans fats—which can be found in foods such as packaged foods, fried foods

and certain vegetable shortenings or margarines—can potentially lead to cardiovascular disease.

According to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, the recommended alternative to trans fat has been mono- or polyunsat-urated fats, which are known to reduce overall cholesterol levels. However, some experts ques-tion what impact an increased intake of these unsaturated fats will have on the overall health of Americans. Data has shown that increased consumption of polyunsaturated fat may, in fact, negatively impact health, lead-ing to weight gain and coronary heart disease.

To get the same flavor and texture that a trans fat provides, many products require an alter-native solid fat as a replace-ment. It can often be challeng-ing to accomplish this with only unsaturated fats. Instead, food manufacturers rely on a blend of fatty acids found in sources such as palm oil, which contains a balanced mix of saturated and unsaturated fats.

“The greatest benefit of palm oil is that it has similar functional properties as trans fat, so it may be effectively substituted without the negative health outcomes,”

says Stacey Day, MS, RD. “In fact, studies suggest that palm oil raises HDL, which is the good cholesterol.”

According to Day, when look-ing at a nutrition label, keep these things in mind:

• Avoid food products con-taining partially hydrogenated and hydrogenated vegetable oils and shortenings.

• Look for healthier alterna-tives to trans fats, such as palm oil, which is a balanced blend of saturated and unsaturated fats.

• An alternative such as palm oil raises HDL cholesterol levels, which is good cholesterol, and has been shown to have neutral effect on LDL cholesterol levels, which is bad cholesterol. This results in better cardiovascular health.

Consumers are encouraged to look closely at their nutrition labels and watch out for trans fats. More information on palm oil can be found at www.ameri-canpalmoil.com.
