ALAN BOYLE SEPTEMBER 19, 2013

Though it proved very controversial in the Islamic world, Saddam Hussein commissioned a

copy of the Quran written in his own blood. But there are plenty more fascinating (if less

creepy) pieces of knowledge centering around this book. Muslims make up over 1.5 billion

of the planet’s population, so it stands to reason that there’s a lot of Quran-based

knowledge out there.

In 2008, Sayeed Najmul Hasan Chishti from India took the world record for creating the

largest handwritten Quran. Then in 2009, the record was being eyed by a teenager writing

for 12 hours a day to produce a Quran 3,000 meters (about 1,000 ft) long. If she finished, no

one noticed because the world record was taken in 2011 by a Quran in Russia. Weighing

1,763 pounds, this massive book was encrusted in gold and silver and a smattering of

precious stones.

After all that effort, it probably hurt when the new world’s largest Quran was unveiled in

Afghanistan a couple of months later. Clearly, the quest to have the world’s largest is

hard-fought, and a lot of people are putting a lot of effort into claiming it (someone should

probably tell them about the 18-meter (60 ft) Quran that is part of a building in South

Sumatra). There are a lot of large Qurans, is what we’re saying.

9Misprinted Qurans Caused A Political Crisis

The Quran is believed to be the exact word of Allah, so leaving a paragraph out when

copying it is quite frowned upon. It’s also typically best not to alter words here and there.

Page 3: 10 Strange Facts About The Quran - Listverse.pdf

An even bigger no-no is printing 120,000 copies of your bad copy-paste job and

distributing them internationally, as happened with state-issued copies of the holy book

in Kuwait in 1999.

The minister for justice and Islamic affairs was the unfortunate person in the firing line

when this came to light. He was accused of “trying to disfigure the faith of Muslims” and

the result was that the entire Kuwaiti parliament was dissolved. Members of the

government’s opposition claimed the misprints were created intentionally to provide an

excuse for parliament to be broken up and a new election called.

8Quran Memorization

Seventeen million people around the world watched the Dubai National Quran Awards this

year, a contest in which children recite the book from memory in pursuit of 250,000 UAE

dollars ($70,000). As well as the top prize, there’s also an award for most beautiful voice.

Like many competitions between children, there’s a hint that this is about the parents:

This year’s beautiful voice said, “My father who has worked hard in training me is really

happy and I’m proud that I didn’t let him down.”

Page 4: 10 Strange Facts About The Quran - Listverse.pdf

listverse.com/2013/09/19/10-strange-facts-about-the-quran/ 4/24

Putting pushy parenting aside, memorizing the scripture is a big thing. The term “hafiz” is

used to describe those that have learned the Quran in full, and the hafiz are well regarded

among their fellow Muslims.

7Banning The Quran

Banning books has enjoyed a long and successful history of being a very bad idea. All holy

books, the Quran included, were banned in Soviet Russia from 1926 to 1957. In recent

years, the infamous Dutch politician Geert Wilders led an attempt to have the Quran

banned in the Netherlands. The motion didn’t come close to passing. Imran Firasat, a

former Muslim, lodged a petition in Spain for the Quran to be banned but was met with

similar success.

One of the most popular English interpretations of the Quran is “The Meaning of the Holy

Quran.” Shortly after 9/11, the Council on American-Islamic relations began donating

copies of this version of the book to schools. References in the book to Jews as apes and

pigs led the LA school district to ban that edition of the book for a time in 2002.

Page 5: 10 Strange Facts About The Quran - Listverse.pdf

listverse.com/2013/09/19/10-strange-facts-about-the-quran/ 5/24

Ultimately, the banning of books, any books, is an extremist position not many people are

likely to take. Atheists are as likely as anyone to encourage the reading of holy books: The

faithful and faithless are generally united in each thinking that actually reading sacred

scriptures will lead people to agree with their position.

6Miracle Baby

In 2009, Muslims in the Russian Republic of Dagestan flocked to see a nine-month-old boy.

Reports claimed that verses on the Quran were appearing spontaneously on the skin of

young Ali Yakubov. Thousands visited his home to witness the miracle. Skeptics were

keen to point out the fact this may actually be child abuse but with wider implications.

Ali’s father is a policeman in a region heavily impacted by Islamist extremism. The police

and security services are a popular target for terrorist groups in the region, and the local

mayor was quick to suggest that the writing was a sign from Allah that religion shouldn’t

be taken too far. As his mother put it, “Allah is great and he sent me my miracle child to

keep our people safe.” Unfortunately, four years on, the Islamist insurgency in Dagestan

continues.

5Swearing On The Quran

If you want to make it in US politics, but you’re not a Christian, then you’d better be

prepared for a rough ride. It’s probably going to be quite a number of years before a

president offers his or her morning prayers to anyone but Jesus, yet people of other (and

no) faiths are making inroads. In November 2006, Democrat Keith Ellison became the first

Muslim to enter congress, an event that normally involves a ceremonial swearing on a

Bible. Eagle-eyed readers will have spotted the inevitable conflict in that last sentence.

While the swearing-on-a-holy-book event is basically a photo op and not part of the

official ceremony, Ellison’s choice to use a Quran drew inevitable criticism from

traditionalists. In Australia, MP Ed Husic faced abuse online after he swore in on a Quran

for the first time in the country’s history, in much the way that everyone faces abuse

online for everything. He also received a lot of support, and remained pragmatic about the

events, saying, “The important thing is that mainstream Australia wants everyone to work

together.”

4Rules For Handling The Quran

Muslims revere the Quran above all other books (and most other things in general). Many

people know the Quran is supposed to be kept on the highest shelf in the house to

Page 8: 10 Strange Facts About The Quran - Listverse.pdf

represent its place above other books, but that’s not nearly everything you need to know

to handle a Quran properly. You shouldn’t leave it open when you put it down, never wet

your fingers with spit to turn the pages, and don’t read with the Quran on your lap.

Many rules for handling the Quran are derived from Islamic ideas of purity. Wudu is a

process of cleansing oneself in preparation for prayer and should rightfully be undertaken

before touching or carrying the Quran (or touching or carrying anything containing the

Quran). Also, sorry ladies, but many Muslims believe you should forego reading the Quran

during your menstrual cycle because that’s not a “clean time.”

There are dozens of requirements, and if remembering them all makes you tired, then be

careful—yawning when reciting scripture is also frowned upon.

3What’s A Quran worth?

The most expensive Quran sold for over $2.3 million in 2007. While that doesn’t make it the

most valuable holy book (one volume of the two-part Gutenburg Bible sold for $5.5 million

Page 9: 10 Strange Facts About The Quran - Listverse.pdf

in 2008), it’s still a substantial amount of money. The Quran in question is dated June 1203

(17 Ramadan 599 on the Islamic calendar) and is the oldest complete and dated copy

known.

As with anything, big money attracts crime. Three men were arrested in May 2000 for

trying to smuggle a stolen copy of the book out of Turkey. The 11th-century Quran, stolen

from Topkapi Palace in Istanbul, would’ve been worth around $50,000 on the UK black

market.

2Quran Burning

Infamous pastor Terry Jones became known around the world in 2010 for his plans to

create “International Burn a Quran Day.” He’s still at it, but his plans to burn 2,998 Qurans

on September 11 this year were cut short when he was arrested for illegally transporting

kerosene to the burning site, along with a trailer filled with Qurans and a grill. It’s

understandable that authorities would be nervous about Qurans being burned—in 2012,

American soldiers in Afghanistan mistakenly threw several Qurans, intended for storage,

into a waste fire. This sparked days of rioting that left dozens dead.

In Bangladesh, 160 people were arrested last year following riots that destroyed centuries-

old Buddhist temples and several homes. The riots were prompted not by a Quran

burning, but by a local Buddhist man being tagged in a picture of a Quran burning on

Facebook. After being subject to the worst Facebook tagging ever, the man at the center of

it all was escorted to safety by police and unharmed by the mob, estimated to consist of

25,000 Muslims. Houses, shops, and Buddhist artifacts were targeted. A local journalist

described the post-riot villages as looking “as if they were hit by a major cyclone.”

1Rimsha Masih

Pakistan is one of several Muslim nations with laws against damaging a Quran. As a

nation with a 97 percent Muslim majority, religious minorities are often on the wrong end

of these laws. One of the saddest examples in recent times is the story of Rimsha Masih, a

14-year-old, disabled girl from a Christian family. In August 2012, Rimsha was accused of

damaging a Quran after she was found in possession of singed pages. Under pressure

from a threatening mob, police arrested the girl while 600 Christian families from her

village were forced to flee their homes.

A local Muslim cleric, Khalid Jadoon, was later accused of planting the evidence. He had

called for the Christians to be burned alive, adding horrible implications to his alleged

Page 11: 10 Strange Facts About The Quran - Listverse.pdf

crime. He was due to be tried at the high court in Islamabad, but the case was dropped

following witness statements changing. Jadoon accused the police of placing people under

duress to obtain the original statements. Those on the other side have accused Islamic

extremists of threatening the witnesses into retracting their stories. Whoever is correct, it

remains a tragic case that the authorities handled very badly.

Christians sometimes go a bit overboard with their reverence for the Bible, but Muslims

take it to its logical extremes and far beyond that. Don't take this shit so seriously, it's only

some ink on a dead tree.

But many people do take this shit seriously. Some of them very seriously and it

doesn't matter if it's the Quran, the Bible, the Communist Manifesto or Mein Kampf.

The fallout is always the same...innocent people get caught in the firing line.

Saying "Don't take it seriously, it's only some ink on a dead tree" only works on

those who don't take it seriously in the first place.

Religion: Some of us can't live without it....and some of us can't live at all, because

there are extremists who will quite happily kill innocent people (because they are not

innocent in the thought processes of the fanatically minded) if they think that it will

"help the cause".

I'm not against religion itself, per se, it's the fanatics that worry me. The ones who

believe to such a point that the world only makes sense to them if their 'perceived'

enemies are killed.

Whether it's a holy book or a political statement...it's the fanatics that absorb every

word and decide that the world would be a better place if they kill those who don't

agree, that worry me.

And I don't know what we can do about them.

I see no difference between the Tanakh, Bible or Quran. Sure, they have

SOME positive messeges, but all have plenty of atrocious shit and all have

extremists who have commited terrorists attacks and will continue to try. If

we're going to condemn one, let's condemn them all.

No. Why? "Because if we are going to condemn one, lets condemn

them all."

It's like saying EVERY book is the same.

Religion or not, humans are still violent.

The only thing you were right about was regarding

The extremists.

However, there are plenty of violent tv programming, movies, and

music. It doesn't mean we should condemn them all.lol

Mr.DeWit t • 2 months ago PaperTrees

Let's see: Quran 9:29 and 1 Samuel 15:3 both encourage violence

and genocide. Corinthians 14:34 - 35 and Quran 4:11 are both sexist.

There are more, but, I've made my point. I was raised Catholic so I

have read the Bible and studied Theology so I have read many

verses in the Quran. I didn't say every book is the same, I stated that

I see no difference between three specific books, not all. Most people

don't take movies and TV as seriously because they know it's fiction,

but may accept these texts as fact because that's what they believe.

I said 'condemn them all" because people target one of those books

without looking at the other two and realizing they're strikingly similar.

You are correct about humans being violent without religon, but it has

been a major motivator and justification for useless violence

throughout history.

PaperTrees • 2 months ago Mr.DeWitt

Again, you've only stated a possible few similarities. But there are

major fundamental differences.

Can you elaborate on the practice of purdah?

On the corithians scripture, the women would gossip and speak

loudly in church. The equivalent to cell phones in a theater. Although I

am female.

There are people who take movies too far. Like James Holmes the

guy who dressed as joker and shot everyone. I don't believe he was

religious, either.

There are people who take things too far. These are extremists, and

they can ruin ANYTHING. I know when it comes to religion, it can be

just as terrifying. Like, suicide bombers. On a lesser degree, rude

pastors.

Purdah is the separation of the sexes, seclusion of women and set of

norms. I don't see any major fundemental differences between them

except in certain customs. Fundementally, it's about accepting God,

worshipping God, following his word, etc. Ephesians 5:22 - 25,

Colossians 3:18 and Esther 1:22 are among others in the Bible.

Holmes was a crazy, pathetic bastard who went to the movie

because he knew lots of people would be there. We have different

opinions, but we can agree that religon itself isn't the problem, it's

humans and how far they are willing to go.

Oh, I thought female Genital mutilation, women being unable to drive

or get an education was part of purdah. Is that a form of religious

extremism, or part of the religion? No one ever given me an answer. I

ask you this because of your background in theology.

But thank you, your perspective is very interesting :)

Women being unable to drive is law in certain countries only. Genital

mutilation is never required by the Quran. The people who preform it

are generally uneducated and think it decreases libido. It doesn't.

Thank you for your honestly and opinion..as a muslim I will say there

are many verses that are taking to extremes...Muslims are mandated

to fight for thier lives but also never kill without just cause. But man is

man..no matter what color or religion. We tend to do wrong based on

desire..and try to justify it with religion.

@ph7sicx ..Yup, also to be noted Burning the Qur'an is actually one

of the recommended ways of disposing it by Islamic Law. So, they're

basically helping the Muslims if they buy them lol.

And Oh! speaking of Bangladesh their temple was ruined, may want

to check out Burma Muslims being attacked by Buddhists extremists

while still in their monk clothing and all in Burma. Who destroyed their

Mosque, shops destroyed, burnt villages, and burned a Muslim alive

(there's a footage of it on YouTube, maybe it's already taken down,

last I checked it was more than one Muslim), The Buddhist extremist

murdered Muslims only because they're Muslims. And they're also

racist against their looks. Seriously, Looks and belief (and they're

vocal about it too). Are the two of the biggest factors.

Now, who started this you ask? It was the King of Burma who killed a

Muslim, only because he's a Muslim. Muslims would eventually

obviously retaliate. With their extensive racism and hatred for being a

Muslim, isn't really surprising for them to cause these years and

years (maybe decades by now) of on-going massacre. Which is

incredible really, since Burma is somehow under the radar with no

actual Western support. When it comes to Muslims nobody would

mind, because they're all terrorists right?

This is the problem with people who cast stones on religion. I'd like to

make it clear that I am a Christian. However, I don't condone

murdering people or terrorizing people simply because they believe

something different than me. Rather that be a government or an

individual. As for the taken out of context argument it happens with

every religious book. Rather then actually reading something and

forming an educated opinion lots of people simply follow stride with

what they hear from other people, see on TV, or read from biased

sources. I picked the faith that I believed in, I was not taught any

religion so all the beliefs I have come from simply reading and

studying the bible. I know nothing about the Quran. So how could I

honestly say anything at all about? I couldn't and I have enough

sense to know and acknowledge that. I can't speak for everyone but

oddly enough in my own personal experience it's the atheist's that

usually gripe and make such comments and quote things they know

nothing about. I'd rather have a religious argument with a Muslim,

Jew, or any other faith simply because at least they would be arguing

because they believe in something...not just to be an ass. Why is an

atheist offended by faith if they don't have any faith?

sake of an argument is just plain silly..sorry~

Generic counter attack, "quote out of verse".

Face it, Quran is jam packed with more action and violence than The

Expandables 3.

Hahaha..oh Mighty Ji99a..I'm amused with your so-called knowledge

about the Quran in which religion you didn't even have faith in. I am

sure you have done a lot of "internet" research on this theory of yours

:) but, what ev~ :D

Quoting verses out of context isn't the prerogative of religious people.

Besides, what context makes "However, he who turns away and

disbelieves - Then Allah will punish him with the greatest

punishment." acceptable? Getting the greatest punishment for

apostasy, like that's even comparable to murder or rape. That's in no

way justifiable.

Hey, what verse is that from? I'm no expert on this religion matter, but

I'll gladly offer you at least a correct translation..

I'm sorry but when did kim ever say she rioted? You're basing an

entire religion off of a few extremists.

you know what..the problem lies somewhere else....its "Self" Vs the

whole community...when you talk about good deeds...then its just

you...not christians..but when it is done by some body else then

according to you and many more like you...its not a person who is

doing it...its muslims....thats the reason y there is so much negativity

in the world...

Hey you got your thing, and I got mine..whatever rock our boat, eh? :)

And those quotes..like Father of Joeseph has pointed out, you literally

kill the translated version and quote it out of context..not cool.. and

perhaps a little advice, to not just google the Quran and its

translations in the internet.. There are lots of fake Quran, hadiths with

horrible mistranslations (is that a word?)..

(2:228) basically saying the women should refrain from marrying for

three monthly periods and to not hide whether they are pregnant at

the time or not. The men have the right to persuade their wives within

that period (which is called iddah) if they meant to reconcile and the

women have the same right to agree or refuse (as long as not

prohibited by Islamic law) so the the men have the upper advantage

over them to start the reconciliation if they meant to do so.

As for the (88:23, 67:6-7, etc.), I dont know where your quotes came

from or from what verse it is, because al-Quran only have 30 juzu'

and that part you're trying to quote seem to exceed it..

EDIT: "yet I don't start rioting when someone dares to defile one of

his works" - funny :D

Well, for (88:23, 67:6-7), they're not refer for juzu, it's refer for sura.

There are 114 sura in Holy Quran, so 88:23 mean sura 88 and verse

23 and 67:6-7 mean sura 67 and verse 6-7.

Peace v(^̂ )

I know :) I just wanted to know if he knows it, given that he seems to

think he knows the Holy Quran and understands it better :D sorry for

think he knows the Holy Quran and understands it better :D sorry for

that, buddy..couldn't resist ;)

As for Surah 88 verse 21-24: Al-Ghaasiyah

(Prophet Muhammad is advised to remind mankind and not to be

dissapointed when one reject as he is only a messenger and not one

to manage the men's affair, it is God's part to give them punishment.)

What is wrong with that? Islam does not allow forcing the religion

onto anyone, the muslims should act merely as a medium in

teaching Allah's religion without torturous means.

As for Surah 67 verse 6-7: Al-Mulk

(Satan are provided their place in hell where the fire is ever-blazing,

and those who have rejected even after being reminded will have

their place in hell, the worse possible destination)

It's a reminder for the the believers..But those who did not believe in

the religion, why would that bit bother them, eh? :)

Yeah, of course because it justifies your pedophile behaviour?

Before my comments are deleted, please explain how is this giving you a

sense of serenity?

Like I've stated in my comment to Armin above, al-Quran only have

30 juzu', so that wiki (65:4), I really have no idea where that verse is

quoted.. Perhaps if you could give another reference, the name of the

Surah or what Juz it is from and the number of Ayat? you know, from

the real thing perhaps, instead of googling :)

Once again, 65 doesn't refer to juzu, it's refer to sura, sis. sura 65 in

qur'an is Al-Talaaq....

Yes, thank you :) It just bothered me why one would think they could

understand a religion simply by typing "(insert religion here)" and

hitting the Search button. Just wanted to know if he knew this as well

:D

As for Surah 65 verse 4: At-Talaaq

It does not in any way justifies pedophile behaviour that you were

trying to implicate, but simply stating an information on the term of

iddah (waiting period) after a divorce. A divorce can only happen

when a man/boy and woman/girl is MARRIED.. A MARRIAGE is

considered a holy matrimony and not to be regarded so lightly, no

matter what age the bride or groom is.

In this verse, Ji99a (and that link) is setting that the groom should be

of adult age. No it's wrong. It does not state what age the groom is.

He could be of the same age as the bride or any other age. It is a

verse that simply state the waiting period of a divorcee (woman).

Oh yeah Ji99a, if trying to reproach Prophet Muhammad and Aisyah

a.s (who was claimed to be of many age), you should know that they

were MARRIED and only consummate their marriage after Aisyah

reach puberty, and their marriage last till Prophet Muhammad died of

old age :)
