SMART SOLES

A dynamic team of four Macedonian undergraduates has recently come up with one of those brilliant inventions that make you scratch your head and wonder how nobody came up with the idea before.

They’ve proposed an energy-saving device that makes use of our everyday walking and running to generate energy for charging devices like mobile phones and tablets.

If this idea catches on it could lead to a major change in the way we use common products, ultimately bringing about a significant reduction in conventional ways of generating energy. Using renewable energy decreases the amount of carbon dioxide that goes into the atmosphere, helping to reduce climate change.

Measurability:EASY

Environmental effectiveness“Think ENERGY differently”- is the motto moving this idea. This prototype harness the energy potential of items that we use daily and reduces our carbon footprint by lessening energy consumption. 5000 tCO2 eq reduction

Economic effectivenessIf an average person weighing around 60-65 kilograms walks constantly for around four hours, he/she would be able to charge a (3.8-5V) battery fully.

Co-benefits This low-cost solution could also be of great help to refugees, enabling them to charge mobile devices when in places with no access to electricity

ECO-TAXI

Team 2’s ‘Eco-Taxi’ idea proposes the conversion of existing taxi vehicles into environmentally-friendly electric taxis with low fuel consumption, no exhaust or greenhouse gas emissions, and no noise.

Initial tests show that ‘Eco-Taxis’ can travel a distance of 100 km at a cost of only 25 MKD (0.4 USD).

People would be able to leave their cars at home and call an eco-taxi to reach their destination in a much more economical and environmentally-friendly way.

Not only would they save time by not having to look for parking spaces, but they would also save on fuel, parking and maintenance costs.

Measurability:EASY

Environmental effectivenessBy cutting exhaust fumes and CO2 emissions, Eco-Taxis would significantly contribute to building up urban resilience. If the average mileage for a taxi vehicle is 100,000 km/year, the replacement of each petrol-fuelled vehicle with an eco-taxi would reduce emissions of carbon dioxide by 16t.Economic effectivenessThe low fuel costs and low maintenance costs mean that five eco-taxi vehicles could be run at the same cost as just one conventional fuel-powered taxi.

Co-benefits Substituting gasoline fuelled taxis with low-cost converted electric vehicles reduces air pollution and noise.

ROTATING AIR SOLAR COLLECTOR

Team 3 came up with a new type of air solar-collector with innovative rotating cells that not only reduce energy costs but also generate revenues.

Made of cheap and light materials with effective thermal features, these collectors preheat room/extract moisture during the day and serve as billboards during the night.

They are ideal for sports facilities, churches, museums and art galleries that need dry air to prevent moisture damage. They can also be used for factories and residential buildings, as well as for agricultural companies that need to dry vegetables and fruits.

The collectors would be placed on the south-facing façades of buildings to deliver preheated air in existing systems and to reduce production costs.

Measurability:EASY

Environmental effectivenessInitial analyses in Stip show that solar collectors can reduce CO2 emissions by 20% in the building sector, by 30% in agriculture-related industries, and by 35% in sports facilities.

Economic effectivenessThe price of a new innovative air solar collector is 135 EUR, with a weight of 27kg. This compares highly favourably to the price of a conventional air solar collector, at 1,290 EUR, with a weight of 39kg.

Co-benefits The installation of new and more affordable air solar collectors will help removing moisture and mould, with significant health benefits. Local production of these innovative collectors will create new and green jobs, improving the local economy and reducing energy poverty.

‘The Sun is cool!’ SOLAR COOLING

Imagine if the Sun not only heated up the Earth but also cooled it down. Imagine buildings without air-conditioners stacked on their façades.

Imagine 100% pure renewable energy available to anyone anywhere. Well, imagination has turned into reality with this module for solar cooling without moving parts or need for electricity.

Based on a patented and highly awarded innovation for solar collectors, in combination with locally purchased materials, this solar cooling device is available to any household, enterprise and industrial processing facility.

This solution is compatible in terms of the demand and availability of energy because the period when cooling is most needed—in summer—is also the period when solar radiation energy has the strongest intensity.

Measurability:EASY

Environmental effectiveness100% pure renewable energy available to anyone anywhere. Replacing a typical small air-conditioner with this solar cooling device will reduce the output of CO2 by 500 kg.

Economic effectivenessThis is an affordable and easy solution for cooling households, business and industrial facilities, which will help you reduce your energy bills and save money. It could be particularly effective for bringing ‘transport temperature’ to fruit cooling storage units.

Co-benefits Widespread use of this solar cooling device could contribute significantly to increasing urban resilience by ensuring optimal ambient temperatures while improving air quality and decreasing energy consumption, as well as improving the aesthetics of urban architecture.

i-Switch

People often forget to turn off the lights in rooms they have recently left. They also often make wrong decisions about using heating and cooling devices by not following the weather forecasts for the coming days.

i-switch is an easily-installable intelligent system that can provide a high quality living environment with low expenses. Small changes in the existing infrastructure can enable intelligent control of the electricity bill without user interaction (smart assistive technology).

And what makes this idea different from other similar solutions is that it uses the geo-location of user(s) in indoor environments. The device can detect the user’s position and create energy-saving programmes

Measurability:EASY

Environmental effectivenessReduces Power Consumption and reduces greenhouse gases

Economic effectivenessThe cost of an i-Switch (as a prototype) is only 16 USD. Using an i-Switch in a company of 100 employees would reduce energy consumption during lunch breaks by up to 40%, meaning savings of a minimum of 300 EUR per year.

Co-benefits i-Switches will lead to safer working environments. They can also provide assistance to people with physical and mental disabilities. All the gathered data can be used to help better informed decision making and also for scientific big-data research.

CARPOOLING SMART APP

This team came up with a car-sharing solution that can reduce the number of cars on the road by increasing the number of passengers per vehicle. Based on free maps of the city and other applications such as Viber, Skype or WhatsApp, users can find the routes of people offering transport that suits their needs, join the ride and reduce their monthly transport costs, especially for regular commutes.

The application will calculate the emissions of greenhouse gases reduced per year. This isincluded among the measures taken by the city as part of the Covenant of Mayors Initiative. This user-friendly solution takes into consideration many other aspects of transport, such as safety and security.

Measurability:MEDIUM

Environmental effectivenessIf only 1% of Skopje’s 117,082 registered vehicles were to take part in this measure, the solution would result in total savings of 1.3kt of CO2 per year. This amount is equivalent to all the CO2 emissions arising from the energy consumed by all the buildings of all cultural institutions in the City of Skopje.

Economic effectivenessThe solution is timely, cheap and safe.

Co-benefits Reduced air pollution is another benefit of this tool that can also be monitored directly or indirectly by the application.

Viral Videos

This team came up with a project to raise awareness about climate change by creating viral videos and humorous sketches (including sketches starring celebrities).

A viral video will promote alternative means of transport such as bikes to encourage more people to accept alternative means of transport and thus significantly reduce pollution.

Examples include: Selfie – maniacs: “ Madonna” (i.e. celebrity) is stopping you for a selfie, Traffic-light guerrilla: “Madonna” is cleaning your

windshield & Unexpected guests-“Madonna” lights up your home with energy efficient light-bulbs.

CLIMATE CAFÉ

Climate Café is a simple but effective idea for creating a place where people/neighbours can gather to hear and share their experiences with the public about the activities they’ve undertaken to help mitigate climate change.

These speakers are the champions in their community/neighbourhood, but also ordinary people who have made a change in their behaviour that contributes to climate change mitigation. An inspiring story can make people think and change—and this would be an inspiring, personal story.

On top of which, it would be a local story and a real story. It will have much more impact and it will encourage other people to try out something different.

e-TOILET

Recent research shows that 65% of the water we use in our homes is wasted in bathrooms.

This innovation shows how water can be re-used by using an affordable solution with an attractive design: a container easily installed in the bathrooms of houses, offices and hotels, etc., that gathers the water used for personal hygiene from the sink and the bathtub.

The water goes through filters into the container and is then used to fill the flush toilet.

Measurability:EASY

50 shades of green

The main idea of the project is to select one prominent building in Skopje and to turn it from grey to green and set an example for others to follow.

The proposed building is the Skopje City Hospital, located right in the centre, the most polluted area of the capital. Refurbishing this grey old building with a green roof and façades would certainly have a great social impact and could inspire similar undertakings in other polluted areas of the country.

The solution is cheap, easy to construct, self-sustainable and has a longer lifetime than conventional roofs.

Measurability:EASY

Environmental effectivenessGreen roofs and facades are long-term solutions with multiple benefits and co-benefits, such as acting as carbon sinks.

Economic effectivenessLower energy consumption for heating and cooling (45kWh/m2)

Co-benefits Green roofs and facades will have the following co-benefits: decrease local air pollution, improve the microclimate (at least 3 degrees lower temperature in summer), efficient management of atmospheric water (30–50% absorption), increase sound isolation (by 10–20 dB), significant social impact - improving the quality of life and enriching the space for hospital patients, create new natural habitats for wildlife & offer a major new design palette for creating beauty in urban areas
