    I. Thou shalt not speak to a child fromacross the room

    II. Thou shalt get down on the childs eye-level and use childrens names

    III. Thou shalt accept, help identify, andvalidate childrens feelings

    IV. Thou shalt teach and encourage childrento use problem-solving

    V. Thou shalt be aware of tone of voice andspeak to children respectfully, alwaysmindful of their self-esteem

    VI. Thou shalt ask open-ended questions toencourage thinking skillsVII. Thou shalt greet children warmly when

    they arrive, and continue to make themfeel welcome and accepted throughoutthe day

    VIII. Thou shalt state things in a positive way,telling children what they can do, and notwhat they cant do
