MissionThe mission of the South Carolina

Teaching Fellows Program is to recruit talented high school

seniors into the teaching profession and help them

develop leadership qualities.

BackgroundEach year, the program provides

Fellowships for up to 175 high school seniors who have exhibited

high academic achievement, a history of service to their school and community, and a desire to

teach in South Carolina.

PreparationTeaching Fellows participate in

advanced enrichment programs at Teaching Fellows Institutions, have

additional professional development opportunities, and are

involved with communities and businesses throughout the state.

FellowshipTeaching Fellows receive up to

$24,000, in yearly scholarships (up to $6000 a year for four years) while they complete a degree

leading to teacher certification. A Fellow agrees to teach in South

Carolina one year for every year he or she receives the Fellowship.

Interviews• You will be asked to tell a little bit about yourself.• 7 questions have been prepared and will be asked of all

students.• Interviewers will be writing while you share your responses.• You may bring notes to the interview. You may NOT bring

portfolios or other aids.• Your responses will be rated on the following criteria:

• How well you communicate your ideas• Originality of your responses• How well you think analytically to see problems from

different perspectives• How well you understand world issues and their effect on

children

Presentation• You may prepare and use note cards, but you may NOT use other aids to assist you in

your presentation.• You will make your presentation to the interview team after they have asked the

prepared questions.• You will have 5 minutes to share your ideas.• Your presentation should include the following:

• Why you want to become a teacher• What you hope to teach (ex: grade, subject)• Qualities of successful teachers that you see in yourself and how those qualities will

be an asset to a school community• Briefly explore a current world event and share its impact on students and learning• How you will address ethnic and cultural diversity in your classroom• Accomplishments you hope to make as an educator

• You will have an opportunity to ask questions of the interview team. The number of questions and the degree to which they can respond will depend on the remaining time.

Writing Assessment• Be familiar with the rubric. • Be prepared to use the entire 30

minutes for responding. No one may leave the writing room early.
