Hybrid Super Heterodyne FFT

Since FFT based analyzers are only capable of

considering narrow bands, one technique is to combine

heterodyne and FFT analysis for consideration of wide and

narrow spans. This technique allows for faster sweep time

This method is made possible by first down converting

(mixing) the signal (super heterodyne), then digitizing the

intermediary frequency and using FFT techniques to

acquire the spectrum.

One benefit of digitizing the intermediary frequency is the

ability to use digital filters, which have a range of

advantages over analog filters such as near perfect shape

factors and improved filter settling time. Also, for

consideration of narrow spans, the FFT can be used to

increase sweep time without distorting the displayed

spectrum.

IQ Data Recording Function

Sampling Rate identical to selected CBW

Memory of max. 250,000 data sets: I and Q value plus resp. frequency value

Maximum observation periods for RBWs of 32 MHz / 200 kHz / 100 Hz are: 7,8125 ms / 1,25 sec / 41,67 minutes, respectively

Trigger functions of Scope Mode (as in SRM) can be used

IQ data will be presented individually or combined over time

When post-processing recorded data every part of content can be extracted from IQ data – including contained user information itself (voice, video, FAX, data, telemetry, etc.) – many 3rd party software is available for that purpose

Constellation diagrams are very useful to present QoS or KPI of PSK or QAM modulated signals. In that case Q will be simply presented over I – after carrier frequency was synchronized with symbol rate. Thus IQ data will be presented at their ideal sampling times in order to detect deviation or noise => distortion of time/phase or amplitude

This analysis allows for simple signal classification, e.g. digital modulation, PSK-8 with symbol rate of 19 200 Baud OR analog modulation, FM with peak frequency deviation of 75 kHz

Page 17: 1. Introducing Narda 2. Introducing NRA 3. Introducing IDA-2 · 1. Introducing Narda 2. Introducing NRA 3. Introducing IDA-2 1 1. ... ASCII command set, ... Low power consumption,

Gapless IQ data streaming up to 400 kHz BW

Separate IQ data channel (TCP or UDP) and control channel (TCP)

allow for change of parameters “on-the-fly”

=> e.g. user program is searching for max. signal level by modifying

MR/Attn and/or Fcent and/or BW !

- flag bits will indicate potential settling times (BW) – if any !

- time stamps are supporting this function, too

=> change of settings without data stream interruption

addresses monitoring applications in a very comfortable way

included in Scope and IQ data option

soft codecs on controller PC demodulate data stream into baseband

signal, e.g. for listening to analogue information (.wav)

=> lawful interception of voice/data/video

=> or continous QoS analysis of digital signals, i.e. KPI assessment

like constellation diagram or EVM or Eb/NO

New mode for spectra with approx. 25 times more data points

(27 k to > 600 k bins) => ‘high res. trace data’

Alternatively 400 bins are also possible => for fastest testing

=> real-time control systems

Application offers wideband analysis with multiple windows GUI

based on a single sweep

Multiple SA windows can be programmed by user,

e.g. one per carrier / band can be realized

N.B.: ITU-T Spectrum Monitoring Handbook asks for 12,5 kHz

channels and respective analysis and presentation of bins

=> NRA/IDA/SRM offering dF=RBW/2 => e.g. 20 kHz => 2 x bins

=> approx. every 10 kHz one result point !

Satellite Signals

Satellites working in Ku-Band, i.e. Astra: 10.7GHz to 12.75GHz

Signals being transmitted by vertical and horizontal polarization

For consumer it needs to be cheap (low cost coax cables are used in

households to get the signal to the satellite receiver)

LNB (Low Noise Block Converter) converts signal from Ku-Band to L-

Band (950MHz to 2150MHz)

SAT Receiver operates at IF level and controls polarization and frequency

bands

By that principle channel capacity does increase by 4 times : 2 x 2 !
