China-based Shanxi Television has chosen a Calrec Brio36 audio

console for its news programming and multi-purpose talk shows.

The Brio is installed in a new studio, which was initially used for covering the recent China National Youth Games with more than 10 hours of live broadcasting produced in the studio each day. This is the broadcaster’s second Brio installation with the first installed a year ago.

Mr Wu Jie, Supervisor of the technical department of Shanxi Television, commented, “We have been very happy with our first Brio, which has proved to be intuitive to use, with great sound quality and stability. The last point is very important. The intuitive I/O connections and simple-to-use software and surface helped us save a lot of time during installation in this new studio and with the training, too.”

Shanxi Television is a network in the Taiyuan and Shanxi province that broadcasts in Jin Chinese. For the China National Youth Games, they received signals from multiple venues and the hosts and guests adding commentary and comment in the studio.

Mr Wu Jie explains that they set up the new studio in 10 days, with five days of training, with the Brio’s clear design making it easy for operators to master quickly. Also, functions like swapping a fader on an individual strip, ALT-input, auto mixing and the fact that labelling channel strips is easy are also highlighted, along with the support Calrec partner RAC Pro provided throughout the process.

Later this year, Shanxi Television will be working with 4K content and they anticipate that the Brio’s 5.1 capabilities and expandability will make the use of 4K go smoothly.

Digistor recently completed the refresh of the Dejero cellular

blended technology at Network 10 and helped them deploy the latest EnGo and WayPoint equipment at their news operations in Australia.

Network 10 compared alternatives and were most impressed with the Dejero solution and how it would continue to help them efficiently capture breaking news.

They had already recognised the growing value of cellular bonded technology and how it was set to transform the delivery of broadcast quality live feeds from anywhere in the world; cost-effectively, conveniently and with much greater flexibility.

With that in mind, Network 10 carried out extensive evaluations of alternate technology before committing to an entire fleet of Dejero EnGo transmitters and WayPoint receivers.

On the increasing prevalence of blended cellular technology, Network 10 BCC Supervisor Rafael Oort explained: “It’s always hard to predict

live cross windows in breaking news so booking in satellite windows, as we previously did, became expensive and inefficient and we needed an alternative.”

He said: “It could be rapidly deployed while delivering low latency, HD and SD formats and broadcast quality for live or pre-recorded content. The Dejero solution provided high-quality video at low bandwidths, was cost-effective and

flexible. It also enabled us to send content either live or via store-and-forward back to the station.”

According to Oort the benefits of the Dejero solution didn’t stop there: “The Dejero’s ability to handle poor cellular network conditions is another major bonus. Then there are further benefits in the system’s adaptive bitrate encoding to automatically minimise

visual artefacts in footage that goes live to air. Finally, Dejero provide 24/7 support for our camera crews, which is also a must. Our crews are deployed internationally and need to be able to call for technical support around the clock. In other words, the Dejero solution had it all.”

Oort has used Dejero solutions for some time and speaks highly of their evolution, adding: “We’ve seen the solution improve significantly over the years. Camera crews are doing live crosses from a backpack, and they’re loving the ability to be agile on location without being tied to a long cable. Their picture quality has also vastly improved. We’re also becoming more confident with Dejero’s bonded technology as it has become more widespread globally.”

Having integrated return IFB to remote crews also makes the entire live cross set up much easier to manage from an MCR perspective.

Oort said: “The crews can power on, transmit and be live in a matter of seconds, anywhere in the world, without having to line up cumbersome microwave links and SNGs. This functionality was particularly effective during the last Olympics where, because of the Dejero infrastructure, we were able to deploy multiple crews and file all our stories at minimal cost.”

Network 10 is using their new Dejero

solution for the delivery of live and pre-recorded HD and SD news and sport content and for their production programmes.

“Typically camera crews file footage from the field either live or store-and-forward the feed for ingestion into 10’s system for editing, Oort said. “With our current fleet of 20 Dejero transmitters, the solution supplements our DENG and SNG resources and provides more live content from the field domestically and internationally. A single camera person can be deployed at short notice and be live from anywhere in the world. Fast, flexible and efficient.”

In the interests of full disclosure Oort felt that he could not fully conclude Network 10’s experience with their new Dejero solution without mentioning the role Digistor has played in supplying

and implementing it saying: “Over many years working together, Digistor has been excellent to deal with and always understanding of our needs. Much like the Dejero solution, it doesn’t get any better than that.”

For TV households, satellite Direct-to-Home (DTH) TV is the fastest-growing TV reception mode against terrestrial and cable TV in the Philippines, with the number of satellite TV households

estimated to be 3.7 million by year end and forecast to increase to 5.8 million in 2024.Soo Yew Weng, Vice President, Sales & Market Development, Asia-Pacific at SES Video, said: “As the video landscape is increasingly competitive in the Philippines, pay-TV operators need to differentiate themselves by offering new content to their audiences, and this new TV platform aims to help them achieve just that. It is also an excellent example of

how SES goes beyond leveraging the power of satellite to partnering with local players, and jointly building a future-proof media ecosystem that can meet the growing demands of TV audiences.”SES will provide both satellite capacity via SES-9, located at the prime orbital location of 108.2 degrees East, and managed media services such as ad insertion, encoding, monitoring and multiplexing.SES has established a strong presence in Asia Pacific via its premium video neighbourhood at 108.2 degrees East, which currently broadcasts channels to over 17 million TV homes across the Philippines and Indonesia.

The World Teleport Association (WTA) has released Teleports and

Big Data, a new research report that shares insights from executives in the industry on the big data revolution’s impact on their businesses today and the sales, marketing and investment decisions they are making to target expanded opportunity in the future.WTA asked these executives to explore the niches offering the greatest opportunity in the near-term as well as visions of the future role of transmission and satellite technology providers in a data economy.“The growth of big data and analytics in every part of business and government is challenging teleport operators to redefine their value,” said WTA Executive Director Robert Bell. “Serving customer becomes a team sport among multiple vendors, and the challenge is to find the place on the value chain that best leverages their capabilities and provides a defensible market niche.”

WTA members can access the report by signing in to their accounts on the WTA website. Non-members can purchase the report for US$1,650.NSR estimates that the biggest markets for big data via satellite will be in transportation, government/military and oil & gas - sectors where teleport operators are deeply embedded. Devices and connectivity are key parts of the mix, but so are applications: formatted data streams and data analytics are the end-products that customers actually need. Success in big data requires teleport operators to evolve beyond connectivity to management of complex networks, sophisticated information processing and a deep understanding of customer requirements.Interviewees for Teleports and Big Data included executives from two of the largest broadband satellite providers, one of the world’s largest teleport operators, and major providers of enterprise, aero, mobility,

rural and media services. They collectively operate scores of satellites and hundreds of teleport facilities, and they serve several million business and residential customers via satellite around the world. Technology executives we interviewed work at companies whose hardware and software support many of the world’s key satellite networks in VSAT, mobile, broadband, media and enterprise satellite networks. Others provide network operations, automation and big data management applications that are used by major satellite networks around the world.Since 1985, the World Teleport Association (www.worldteleport.org) has focused on improving the business of satellite communications from the ground up.

At the core of its membership are the world’s most innovative operators of teleports, from independents to multinationals, niche service providers to global carriers.WTA is dedicated to advocating for the interests of teleport operators in the global telecommunications market and promoting excellence in teleport business practice, technology and operations.
