    Interpretation

    1. The Bible cautions againstspeaking a public message intongues unless it is accompanied

    Interpretation

Biblical Example:1 Corinthians 14:1-401 Let love be your highest goal! Butyou should also desire the special

abilities the Spirit givesespeciallythe ability to prophesy. 2 For if youhave the ability to speak in tongues,

  • 8/8/2019 09-26-2010 Experiencing God in the Church-Spiritual Gifts-Part 3

    39/56

you will be talking only to God, since

people wont be able to understandyou. You will be speaking by thepower of the Spirit, but it will all bemysterious. 3 But one whoprophesies strengthens others,

encourages them, and comfortsthem. 4 A person who speaks intongues is strengthened personally,

  • 8/8/2019 09-26-2010 Experiencing God in the Church-Spiritual Gifts-Part 3

    40/56

but one who speaks a word of

prophecy strengthens the entirechurch. 5 I wish you could all speak intongues, but even more I wish youcould all prophesy. For prophecy isgreater than speaking in tongues,

unless someone interprets what youare saying so that the whole churchwill be strengthened.

6 Dear brothers and sisters, if I should

come to you speaking in an unknownlanguage, how would that help you?But if I bring you a revelation orsome special knowledge or prophecyor teaching, that will be

helpful. 7 Even lifeless instrumentslike the flute or the harp must playthe notes clearly, or no one will

recognize the melody. 8 And if the

bugler doesnt sound a clear call, how will the soldiers know they arebeing called to battle?9 Its the same for you. If you speakto people in words they dont

understand, how will they knowwhat you are saying? You might aswell be talking into empty space.

    10 There are many different

languages in the world, and everylanguage has meaning. 11 But if Idont understand a language, I willbe a foreigner to someone whospeaks it, and the one who speaks it

will be a foreigner to me. 12 And thesame is true for you. Since you are soeager to have the special abilities the

pray in the spirit, and I will also pray

in words I understand. I will sing inthe spirit, and I will also sing in wordsI understand. 16For if you praise Godonly in the spirit, how can those whodont understand you praise God

along with you? How can they joinyou in giving thanks when they dontunderstand what you are saying?

17You will be giving thanks very well,

but it wont strengthen the peoplewho hear you.18 I thank God that I speak in tonguesmore than any of you. 19But in achurch meeting I would rather speak

five understandable words to helpothers than ten thousand words inan unknown language.

20 Dear brothers and sisters, dont be

childish in your understanding ofthese things. Be innocent as babieswhen it comes to evil, but be maturein understanding matters of thiskind. 21 It is written in the Scriptures:
