prophecy strengthens the entirechurch. 5 I wish you could all speak intongues, but even more I wish youcould all prophesy. For prophecy isgreater than speaking in tongues,

come to you speaking in an unknownlanguage, how would that help you?But if I bring you a revelation orsome special knowledge or prophecyor teaching, that will be

helpful. 7 Even lifeless instrumentslike the flute or the harp must playthe notes clearly, or no one will

recognize the melody. 8 And if the

bugler doesnt sound a clear call,how will the soldiers know they arebeing called to battle?9 Its the same for you. If you speakto people in words they dont

understand, how will they knowwhat you are saying? You might aswell be talking into empty space.

languages in the world, and everylanguage has meaning. 11 But if Idont understand a language, I willbe a foreigner to someone whospeaks it, and the one who speaks it

will be a foreigner to me. 12 And thesame is true for you. Since you are soeager to have the special abilities the

strengthen the whole church. 13 Soanyone who speaks in tonguesshould pray also for the ability tointerpret what has been said. 14 For ifI pray in tongues, my spirit is praying,

but it wont strengthen the peoplewho hear you.18 I thank God that I speak in tonguesmore than any of you. 19But in achurch meeting I would rather speak

five understandable words to helpothers than ten thousand words inan unknown language.

childish in your understanding ofthese things. Be innocent as babieswhen it comes to evil, but be maturein understanding matters of thiskind. 21 It is written in the Scriptures:

interpret what is said. But everythingthat is done must strengthen all ofyou. 27 No more than two or threeshould speak in tongues. They mustspeak one at a time, and someone

must interpret what they say. 28 Butif no one is present who caninterpret, they must be silent in your

to God privately.29 Let two or three people prophesy,and let the others evaluate what issaid. 30 But if someone isprophesying and another person

receives a revelation from the Lord,the one who is speaking muststop. 31 In this way, all who prophesy

the other, so that everyone will learnand be encouraged. 32 Rememberthat people who prophesy are incontrol of their spirit and can taketurns. 33 For God is not a God of
