By Larry Blustein [email protected] Fourth of July. It's a holiday that we all look forward to. It's the fam- ily outings to the beach or park, barbecues and evening fireworks. This year, many have opted to extend that holiday beyond Thurs- day and make it a true Fourth of July Weekend - while others will use that special day to soak up the sun, eat some food and take in the fireworks. "It's our family day," Janice Gruen said. "We get together and go to the beach and set up our lunch and snacks all day. It's become a ritual." While the morning and afternoon will be spent eating and enjoy- ing the great south Florida weather, it's what happens at night that peaks the interest of locals. The fireworks shows up and down the coast are certainly worth tak- ing in. No matter what city you live in, there are fireworks going off somewhere close to you. As we do each year, the South Florida Sun Times will give you the best places to enjoy the holiday. Enjoy and be safe this year. BEACH - Happy Fourthof July to all! In 1776 ateam of Five includingThomas Jefferson,John Adams and BenFranklin drafted theDeclaration of Inde-pendence from GreatBritain and presented itto the Continental Con-gress on July 2. Thecongress debated theDeclaration for two

days and on July 4th1776 it was passed. That day even thoughthe colonies were inthe mist of the Revolu-tionary War, JohnAdams shared his be-lief that day be a day ofcelebrations marked bybonfires, parades andpatriotic displays. Therest of the ThirteenColonies did not fullyratify the Declarationuntil August 2 1776.

Another traditionthat is thought to havetaken place on July 4thwas the ringing of theLiberty Bell. It was notuntil July 8 1776 thatthe bell in front of thePhiladelphia StateHouse and was rung tocall all citizens to thefirst pubic reading ofthe Declaration of Inde-pendence. In additionto argument of taxationwithout representationthe main principals in-cluded that all inhabi-tants would be treatedequally with the sameliberty under law. Ironi-cally the bell was notnamed Liberty Bell untilthe Abolitionistadopted it as theirsymbol in the fightagainst slavery. It wasnot until 1865 that slav-ery was abolished, al-most a century later. As our Country cele-

brates July 4th Inde-pendence Day we allneed to remember his-tory and the years thatit has taken to trulyhave individuals enjoy“Life Liberty and thePursuit of Happiness”.As our Country cele-brates the 50th An-niversary of the CivilRights Movement weshould all rememberthose that sacrificedand lost their livesfighting for true Liberty. The Suffragists thatfought for a women’sright to vote. Remem-ber the fragile law giv-ing women the right tomake their own privatemedical decision. Wealso should celebratethe final recognition ofthe right for men andwomen to choose theirmarital partners with-out the threat of dis-crimination. Liberty is acornerstone of ourcountry. We should cel-ebrate it and rememberthat we collectivelyhave to continue topreserve all our rights

and most importantlyto live our lives withoutdiscrimination, oppres-sion and tyranny.

BACK TO CITY BUSINESSLast week I gave

everyone an update onsome of the construc-tion projects that areunderway. Residentskeep asking about thetraffic patterns on A1A.The city is replacingthat water main onA1A. This decision was`made so that we do nothave to dig up and re-place the lines in thefuture. In addition thelateral and fire connec-tions will be tied in.At the last commis-

sion meeting I askedthe commission to con-sider implementing aprogram to addresspainting of the manyback flow meters, notonly on A1A but aroundthe city. Staff will belooking at a program topaint all the meters inpartnership with theprivate property own-

ers. Vice Mayor Lewyasked that we also lookinto beautifying all thevarious signal boxesaround the city. The sewer project on

Holiday Drive is alsomoving forward asscheduled. The forcemain is being replacedthrough a system ofpipe bursting. This in-volved partial diggingareas and trusting anew pipe trough the oldone. During construc-tion a temporary pipehas been placed in themiddle of the road. Re-gretfully this hascaused some incon-venience to the resi-dents but the project isto be completed in twomonths.Grading is already

taking place at PeterBluesten Park and Sun-rise Parks and staff ispreparing to lay sod. Both of these parks arestill in the process ofbeing master planned. WATCHING THE TRIALIN SANFORD As the citizens

around the nation fol-low the Zimmermanhearing our City Man-ager has let the com-mission know she andthe Chief of Police havebeen making somepreparations with thedepartment and ouremployees to insurethat all our residentsare provided the abilityto publicly assemble ina safe and peacefulmanner. From the be-ginning as a motherand parent the biggesttravesty has been thesenseless loss of ayoung man’s life. Nomatter what the out-come we should allpray for Travon Martin’sparents. Please have HappyHealthy Safe July 4th.

With several schools inthe mix to get this quality defensive back, the decision to attendLSU and compete for head coach Les Miles and the Tigers waswhere it all came down to. Battle is also one of the top studentson the team, getting it done in the classroom as well.

(BPT) - The majority ofU.S. men believe theirappearance is an impor-tant factor in their per-sonal and professionalsuccess. As a result, men have become in-creasingly aware of theneed to take better careof their faces - as it tellstheir story and the lifethey have lived. If thiscultural shift is any indi-cation, carefully main-taining your skin - andfacial hair - is a hugepart of putting your verybest face forward. For many, that means

addressing common skinconcerns such asblocked pores, skin dry-ness and looking tired -in addition to the irrita-tion and ingrown hairssustained during routineshaving. These are con-cerns accelerated by theaging process, accord-ing to a study by DoveMen+Care. In fact, abouthalf of men recognizethat as they age, theirskin needs more atten-tion and takes longer torecover. However, facialgrooming expert Dr.Allan Peterkin says thereis good news. "Followingsome simple steps andusing a skincare line thatoffers a variety of spe-cific solutions for men'sdifferent skin types canmake a huge differencein a man's appearance,no matter his age." Hereare Dr. Peterkin's tips onwhat men can do to fi-nally care for their facesand look sharp, whetherbearded or smooth:Cleanse daily: Forty-

eight percent of menadmit they don't washtheir faces, but it's cru-cial to eliminating oil andother bacteria that canbuild up over the courseof the day. Use a dailyhydrating cleanser likeDove Men+Care Hy-drate+ Face Wash, whichhelps to replenish lostmoisture and fight skindryness at the sametime. Those with facialhair aren't exempt fromthe daily ritual either. It'simportant to wash yourbeard or mustache andto keep the skin beneaththe hair healthy as well.Prep your face before

shaving: A warm shower,a splash of hot water, oreven a moist towel priorto shaving helps to openthe pores and softensstubborn stubble that, when untreated, canlead to irritation or in-grown hairs. Try soakinga hot towel in a solutionmade from tea tree oil -available at the localpharmacy - for an invig-orating and decadentdeep clean.Choose the right prod-

ucts: Shaving withoutany lather - also knownas dry shaving - is acommon mistake amongmen who are crunchedfor time; meanwhile, using soap lather forshaving can leave skindry and doesn't provideprotection from razor ir-ritation. Men can finallystop torturing their faces

during their groomingroutines by using anaerosol moisturizing gel- and finish with a mildpost-shave balm. Lookfor balms that are alco-hol free to eliminate dis-comfort or the commonafter-shave burn.Use the right tech-

nique: Be sure to glidethe razor over each areaof the skin only once, asrepeated strokes canleave the skin irritated.Shave with the grain, notagainst it. Rinse skincarefully in warm waterafter each shave and letit dry. Another tip: re-place the razor everyfour to five shaves - halfof US men have used arazor with a dull bladethat's over one monthold; this will not only leadto irritation, but alsocauses bacteria to col-lect.Use your facial fea-

tures to your advantage:Your facial hair - whetherit's a beard, mustache orgoatee - should reflectand accentuate yourbest features. Roundfaces, for example, dowell with fuller beards, while longer faces areserved well by a mus-tache. It's great to trysomething new, so keepyour eye out for looksyou like on friends, fam-ily and celebrities withsimilar features. Askyour barber for advicetoo.Choose a moisturizer

with SPF: In addition toensuring skin lookshealthy and cared for, a

product with an SPF -which stands for sun-protectant factor -serves to shield delicatefacial skin from damag-ing rays. Keep in mindthat SPF is always nec-essary - even if whenbearded. Non-greasy,absorbent formulas arebest, such as the DoveMen+Care Hydrate+Face Lotion, which of-fers SPF protection andkeeps skin hydrated.

With a few simplesteps, men can improvethe overall condition oftheir skin and facial hair. With new products, inno-vations and a few tips,it's easier than ever formen to finally care fortheir faces.

Americas other drugproblem: prescriptionsthat are never taken

BPT) - America has a serious drug problem, but it's not the one you might be thinkingabout. The problem is not illegal drugs ordrug abuse, but rather an alarming percent-age of Americans who do not take their pre-scriptions as instructed. Approximately125,000 deaths per year in the United Statescan be attributed to medication non-adher-ence, according to the National Pharmaceuti-cal Council. The problem of non-adherence is not new,

but it is getting a closer look as experts seekto reduce costs and improve the effective-ness and efficiency of our health system. Datasuggests that roughly half of the 2 billion pre-scriptions filled each year in America are nottaken correctly. For particularly vulnerableAmericans such as the elderly and those suf-fering from multiple chronic conditions, ad-herence rates are even worse. Even with suchlife-threatening diseases such as cancer, pa-tients are non-adherent to medication. The impact of non-adherence, beyond pa-

tient outcomes, is a significant source ofwaste in our healthcare system. Unnecessarymedical costs resulting from patients not tak-ing their medication as prescribed, such asER visits, hospitalizations and extra tests, cost our system over $300 billion annually ac-cording to the New England Healthcare Insti-tute.Many factors contribute to poor medication

adherence. In some patients, non-adherenceis a choice, while in others non-adherence isquite unintentional. For some people, a lackof symptoms, coupled with denial, high out-of-pocket costs or concerns over potentialside effects make them less inclined to evenfill their prescriptions let alone adhere tomedications. It is estimated that as many as22 percent of all prescriptions filled are notpicked up from the pharmacy. For these patients, better adherence starts

at the doctor's office. Physicians, nurses andother caregivers can help by better educatingthe patient about the importance of followingdirections, and by creating a treatment planthat fits patients' needs and lifestyles. Em-phasizing the details on how and why patientsshould take their medications properly, in-cluding details on possible interactions andrefill requirements, can be a good first line ofdefense against the problem of non-adher-ence.However, experts also agree that a substan-

tial portion of the non-adherence problem isinadvertent. The accidental misuse of pre-scription medications is largely a result ofcomplexity, confusion and general forgetful-ness."Many patients are dealing with multiple

medications, all in nearly identical containers, but each one with a different set of dosage in-structions," says Ian Salditch, CEO of Medi-cine-On-Time. "It's a recipe for mistakes - allof which could be addressed through betterprescription packaging."There are a variety of high-tech monitoring

systems aimed at improving adherence, in-cluding pills with digestible sensors. To date, strict monitoring has been seen by con-sumers as being overly intrusive. Solutionssuch as financial incentives and greaterscreening offer promise. But Salditch has fo-cused on the low-tech, common sense ap-proach of simplified packaging and hasachieved encouraging results.Using Medicine-On-Time, pharmacists will

sort and organize medications into personal-ized pill cups labeled with the day, date andtime to take them. Pharmacists provide pillcups to the patient organized into medicationcalendars. In addition, the packaging is de-signed to be easily opened by the frail andelderly. Background information and specific details

about customized packaging can be found onthe company's website, www.Medicine-On-Time.com. Consumers can also find theclosest retail pharmacy offering the Medicine-On-Time system and take advantage of offersat www.sortmymeds.com.

Re-member to rinse thecut or scrape withwater and only cleanthe area around thewound with a mild

GUM DISEASE IN DIABETESThe more severe

form of gum diseaseis called periodontitis. When you reach thisstage, your gumsbegin to pull awayfrom your teeth. Pock-ets form between yourteeth and gums. These fill with germsand pus, and deepen. When this happens, you may need gumsurgery to save yourteeth. If nothing isdone, the infectiongoes on to destroy thebone around yourteeth. The teeth maystart to move or getloose. Your teeth mayfall out or need to bepulled. As if this is not

enough, diabetes canmake things worse.Plaque is the mainbad guy of gum dis-ease. But diabetescan also be a culprit.Diabetes may weakenyour mouth's germ-fighting powers. Highblood sugar levels canhelp the gum diseaseget worse. At thesame time, gum dis-

ease can make dia-betes harder to con-trol.

• Regular dentist vis-its are your bestweapon.• Bleeding gums whenyou brush or floss. This bleeding is notnormal. Even if yourgums don't hurt, getthem checked.• Red, swollen, or ten-der gums. • Gums that havepulled away fromteeth. Part of thetooth's root mayshow, or your teethmay look longer.• Pus between theteeth and gums (whenyou press on thegums). • Bad breath.• Permanent teeththat are loose or mov-ing away from eachother.• Changes in the wayyour teeth fit whenyou bite.• Changes in the fit ofpartial dentures orbridges.• If you have any ofthe above, see yourdentist.

IS THERE AN ASSOCIATION BETWEEN GUM DISEASE AND DIABETES?For the nearly 26

million Americanswho have diabetes, many may be sur-prised to learn aboutan unexpected com-plication associatedwith this condition.Research shows thatthere is an increasedprevelence of gumdisease among thosewith diabetes, addingserious gum diseaseto the list of othercomplications associ-ated with diabetes, such as heart disease, stroke and kidney dis-ease.

IS THERE A TWO-WAY STREET?Emerging research

also suggests that therelationship betweenserious gum diseaseand diabetes is two-way. Not only are peo-ple with diabetesmore susceptible toserious gum disease, but serious gum dis-ease may have the po-tential to affect bloodglucose control andcontribute to the pro-gression of diabetes.Research suggeststhat people with dia-betes are at higherrisk for oral healthproblems, such asgingivitis (an earlystage of gum disease)and periodontitis (se-rious gum disease).People with diabetesare at an increasedrisk for serious gumdisease because theyare generally moresusceptible to bacter-ial infection, and have

a decreased ability tofight bacteria that in-vade the gums. The Surgeon Gen-

eral's Report on OralHealth states thatgood oral health is in-tegral to generalhealth. So be sure tobrush and floss prop-erly and see your den-tist for regularcheckups.

IF I HAVE DIABETES,AM I AT RISK FORDENTAL PROBLEMS?If your blood glu-

cose levels are poorlycontrolled, you aremore likely to developserious gum diseaseand lose more teeththan non-diabetics.Like all infections, se-rious gum diseasemay be a factor incausing blood sugarto rise and may makediabetes harder tocontrol.Other oral problems

associated to dia-betes include: thrush,an infection caused byfungus that grows inthe mouth, and drymouth which cancause soreness, ul-cers, infections andcavities.

HOW CAN I HELP PREVENT DENTALPROBLEMS ASSOCIATED WITH DIABETES?First and foremost,

control your bloodglucose level. Then, take good care of yourteeth and gums, alongwith regular checkupsevery six months. Tocontrol thrush, a fun-gal infection, maintaingood diabetic control, avoid smoking and, ifyou wear them, re-move and clean den-tures daily. Goodblood glucose controlcan also help preventor relieve dry mouthcaused by diabetes.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT AT MYCHECKUP? SHOULDI TELL MY DENTALPROFESSIONALABOUT MY DIABETES?People with diabetes

have special needsand your dentist andhygienist areequipped to meetthose needs - withyour help. Keep yourdentist and hygienistinformed of anychanges in your con-dition and any med-ication you might betaking. Postpone anynon-emergency dentalprocedures if yourblood sugar is not ingood control.
