The Webster County Fair opens Wednesday, July 10,

2013. Over the past year, 4-H club members through-

out our county have been preparing for this week.

With projects that range from Aerospace, Child Care,

Food & Nutrition, Small Animal and others, 4-H’ers

are excited to show off their achievements to the pub-

lic.

The variety of 4-H events at the county fair include

club exhibits, rocketry and photography displays, bake

sales, livestock and small animal judging, horse compe-

titions, and much, much more! Through preparing

and showcasing their talents, these events offer our

youth with the exceptional learning experiences need-

ed to build self-confidence and maturity. But most of

all, 4-H’ers enjoy entertaining the community that has

encouraged them along the way!

4-H is a community of young people across America

who are learning leadership, citizenship and life skills.

With over seven million young people throughout

America, 4-H has grown to encompass youth from

urban cities to rural towns.

At least that is what the members of the Webster

County Aerospace project thought as their rockets

“blasted off ” at the annual launch held before the fiar

at the Webster County Fair Grounds. This year over

25 4-H members have studied about the principles of

rockets and the safety procedurs needed to launch

rockets that they have built. After successfully complet-

ing a safety launch in June, members prepared for

their competition launch June 23rd. Members will

demonstrate their launch techniques and compete for

accuracy and recovery points.

Kids Pedal Tractor Pull

A Sanctioned Kids Pedal Tractor Pull will be held Saturday,

July 13 at 1 p.m. during the Webster County Fair.

There will be four different weight classes offered, up to

40 lbs., 41-60 lbs., 61-70 lbs., and 81-100 pounds.

Dominos Pizza and the Webster County Farm Bureau

sponsor the Pedal Tractor Pull, a trophy will be given in

each weight class. No entry fee is needed. Weigh in will

be done when you sign up at the fair grounds.

Farm Bureau members will serve free

watermelon between 11 a.m. till 1 p.m.

Saturday, July 13th at the Webster County Fair

under the big tent located just north of the

auditorium. All are welcome to attend

All area gardeners will have an opportunity to exhibit

their produce during the Webster County Fair on Saturday,

July 13th.

Entries will be taken from 8:30-10:30 a.m. with the judging

to begin at 11:00 in the East Auditorium. Entry fee is 25

cents per exhibit up to six entries, $1.50 maximum fee for

six entries or more.

There will be classes for freshly harvested vegetables

and small fruits. Information may be obtained from the

Webster County Extension office, 217 South 17th St., Ste.

C-12, on entry guidelines and preparing your vegetables

and fruits for exhibit.

All entries will receive ribbons with cash awards to all Blue

ribbons exhibits furnished by the Fort Dodge Area Garden

Club, and “Best of Show” to receive a $10 cas prize in the

adult classes, $5 in the youth classes.

Again for 2013, will be classes for all kids under 18 years of

age. There will be no entry fee for these entries. Exhibits

will be on display till 4:00 p.m.

The Bill Riley Talent Search annually showcases the

diverse abilities of Iowa’s young people. A Qualifying

show will be held for the public’s pleasure at the

Webster County Fair, Wednesday, July 10th at 2 p.m.

An Open Class Flower Show will be held on Saturday, July 13th, in the East Auditorium dur-

ing the Webster County Fair, sponsored by the Fort Dodge Federated Garden Club.

Entries are open to anyone except professional arrangers and florists. Entries will be taken

from 8:00-10:00 a.m. with judging to begin at 10:30 a.m. The entry fee is 25 cents per entry up

to six entries, $1.50 maximum fee for six entires or more.

There will be division for floral arrangements: roses; annuals, perennials and biennials; wild

flowers; cactus and succulents; foliage plants; herbs; shrubs and trees; bulbs; tubers and contain-

er-grown plants. All exhibits should be displayed in clear glass containers suitable to the size of

the specimen.

A Junior Division for all categories will include those under 18 years of age.

All exhibits will receive ribbons withe cash prizes awarded to division winners and best over-

all exhibits. Exhibits will be displayed till 4:00 p.m.

Show guidelines and exhibit preparation information may be obtained at the Webster

County Extension office, 217 South 25th Street, Ste. C-12, Fort Dodge.

This year, the Webster County Fair market

livestock auction will be held on Saturday, July

13 in the east auditorium beginning at 7 p.m.

After you get your sweet corn from the sweet

corn feed, come join parents, 4-H, and FFA

members as they auction off premiums for

their market livestock in the air conditioning.

This is one way to support the 4-H’er or FFa

member for taking care of their livestock

throughout the year.

CounTy FAIr KInG & Queen ConTesTThe 2013 Webster County Fair King & Queen

Contest will be held Wednesday, July 10, at 7:00 p.m.

in the East Auditorium. The King and Queen Contest

has been a part of the Fair for many years. The

Webster County Soil & Water Conservation District

Commission and the Webster County Fairboard spon-

sor the event. The preliminary judging is done before

the fair.

King and queen candidates are nominated by their local

4-H clubs and must be active in 4-H. They are judged on

personality, leadership, and communication skills.

The 2012 Fair King and Queen, Aaron Martin of

Vincent and Nichole Licht of Humboldt have attend-

ed several local parades sine their reign began.

The 2013 Queen will be entered in the State Fair

Queen Contest in August. She and the Webster

County King will regin over the remainder of the

2013 Webster County Fair, and the coming year until

a new “royal family” is crowned.

There will be daily entertainment from 2 til 8 at the

Webster County Fair, July 10 - July 14, 2013. Including a

Climbing Wall, Giant Slide, Mechanical Bull and more. Also

a Children’s Scavenger Hunt AFTeR 1 & 3 pm Pella Wildlife

expo Shows.

with judging the Family & Consumer Sciences,Expressive Arts, Photography, Mechanics andEngineering and Ag & Natural Resources exhibits onTuesday, July 9. After judging is completed, State Fairselections will be made. All exhbits in the 4-HAuditorium will be on dsiplay for the duration of thefair. The 4-H Auditorium will be closed Sunday morn-ing, July 14 until noon and closed again at 5:00 p.m.Sunday for the evening program.

Wednesday evening will feature the 4-H StyleShow and the selection of the 2013 Fair 4-H King

and Queen. King and Queen candidates are active intheir 4-H clubs and must be active in 4-H. They arejudged on personality and leadership.

Communications entries will be judged as follows:Educational Presentations and ExtemporaneousSpeaking were judged before the fair on Saturday,June 29. Working Exhibits on Saturday, July 13, andShare the Fun on Sunday, July 14. The public is invit-ed to watchy any of these events.

Livestock exhibits will enter on Wednesdaythrough Thursday. Judging will begin Wednesdaymorning with the dog show and conclude on Sunday

afternoon with the pets and horse games classes.The evening program on Sunday, July 14 will fea-

ture the Parade of Champions at 6:30 p.m. followedby the installation of the 2013-2014 Webster County4-H Council.

The livestock market auction will take place onSaturday, July 13 beginning at 7 p.m. in the east audi-torium. All are invited to bid on their favorite 4-Hmember or FFA member’s premium.

The 2013 Webster County Fair will have a

Children’s Open Rabbit show for youngsters who

have just completed kindergarten through 3rd

grade on Thursday, July 11 begining before the

4-H Rabbit Show which starts at 9:00 a.m. at the

Webster County Fairgrounds south of Fort

Dodge. Show will be held in the auditorium.

There will be no entry fee for the show.

Ribbons will be awarded to all entries. This is a

fun class for youth to bring their rabbit and talk to

a judge. (Rabbit superintendent and leaders will

check the entries for health issues.)

The public is invited to watch the judging of this

event and other events which will be taking place

during the fair, July 10-14.

Barn yard olympicsThe Webster County 4-H Council will sponsor an acitivity

on Friday, July 12 beginning at 3:00 p.m. This event,

called “Barn Yard Olympics,” will be for any youth and

adults. Teams race against each other as they do old fash-

ioned activities. Last year, teams had to carry hay bales,

deposit plastic eggs into a bucket and carry a greased

watermelon. Get your team together and come see what

kind of activities the council has come up with this year.

Seven Steps Toward Safe DIY Moving

Pee Wee Beef showAgain this year at the Webster County Fair will be a Pee WeeBeef Show in which young children at least 5 years oldthrough third grade are eligible to show a bucket/bottle calf.A bucket/bottle calf is any orphan or newborn calf bornbetween February 15 and Fair. An exhibitors may borrow a4-H’ers bucket/bottle calf to show. This class will start at8:45 a.m. prior to the regular 4-H classes on Friday, July12th. If an exhibitor brings their own calf in for the day, itmust be kept away from the other cattle unless examined bythe fair vet. All entries will be paraded before the judge andplaced on the basis of showmanship. No entry fees arerequired, but liability forms must be signed by parent orguardian prior to the start of the class. All contestants willreceive ribbons.

Cat show at the County FairOn Friday, July 12, in the East Auditorium, there willbe a variety of cats being shown in 4-H.

The 4-H Cat Show will be at 6:00 p.m. with the judgelooking for many things. Some of these include thepersonality of the cat, condition of the hair coat,noticeable parasites, condition of teeth, and, of course,the correct answers to some feline questions.

There will be a costume class for 4-H’ers and their cats.This class will be held after the 4-H champion isnamed.

Photography Show held on Saturday, July 13 in the east

auditorium. Entries may be taken on Friday, July 12

from 7-9 p.m. or on that day from 8-10 a.m. Ribbons

HELOISEʼS KITCHENEERING BY HELOISE It’s a Pepper!

Dear Heloise: I often see PIMENTOS used in recipes and, of course, stuffed in olives, but what exactly are they? -- Kevin H., via email

They are little, heart-shaped red peppers! But they are not hot like a chili pepper. They are seeded, peeled, cored and cooked before being diced/sliced and packaged in jars. They have a sweet flavor and can be added to salads (potato and coleslaw are favorites), sandwiches and, of course, cheese. The “pimento” in olives is made from the same red pepper, but is processed into uniform pieces.

One of my favorite recipes that uses pimentos is my mother’s (the original Heloise, 1919-1977) Heloise’s Pimento Cheese Spread. To make it, you need the following ingredients:

1 pound boxed soft cheese (or any style cheese that can be grated)

1 cup mayonnaise 1/2 cup finely chopped pickles

(your favorite kind) 4 ounces pimentos Grate the cheese (if necessary)

using a food processor or the large side of a cheese grater. Place a large piece of plastic wrap or wax paper on the counter. Now you are going to layer your ingredients, starting with the grated cheese/soft cheese, followed by the mayonnaise, pimentos and pickles. Use a spatula to fold the ingredients over and over from the bottom to the top. Repeat the process until all the ingredients are gone. Next, store the spread in jars, making sure they are sealed tight, and place in the refrigerator. For other favorite recipes, order my
