1. PRESS RELEASE After the launch of KANAL Brut, the KANAL Foundation takes an important step forward with the filing of the urban planning permit for the future cultural "city" of the capital. On May 5, 2018, KANAL - Centre Pompidou opened its doors in the former Citroën garage in Brussels, for a programme to experiment what KANAL could be in the future, with main focus on the creation of a museum of modern and contemporary art as well as the relocation of the CI.II.III.IV.A Foundation (International Center for City, Architecture and Landscape), the site will close its doors for the first time, but the activities of the KANAL Foundation will continue. From 2020, a new programme will be proposed in the showroom. Then, in 2021 and 2022, KANAL will temporarily move to other parts of the city through partnerships with different cultural actors. In 2023, the new KANAL - Centre Pompidou will open its doors to the public in the transformed garage. These fourteen months of KANAL Brut are only the beginning of the adventure towards the major transformation of the Citroën premises located at Place de l’Yser into a 40.000m2 cultural city, provided with innovative museum infrastructure, whilst preserving the industrial spirit of the building. KANAL Brut not only allows to experiment what the cultural city will be in 2023, but also to test the experience of the place on site and to build the future architectural project. The "Atelier Kanal" trio, composed of the architects’ studios NoaArchitecten (Belgium), Sergison Bates (Great Britain) and EM2N (Switzerland), who convinced the jury in March 2018 following an international contest, was present on site during this experimental year. This allowed them to gain live experience of KANAL Brut. Ever since, the architects continue exploring the elements that seduced the jury: to create a major public space embracing the new museum installations (a Museum of modern and contemporary art and the CIVA Foundation (International Center for City, Architecture and Landscape) while preserving the spirit of this exceptional industrial space. In terms of management of certain spaces and of flows, the activities in the premises during KANAL Brut have brought a real added value. This way, it was possible to select options that wouldn’t have been considered otherwise, which definitely had a positive impact on the architectural project. The entire existing structure will serve as a framework for the spatial organisation of the place, in particular by means of large interior streets which will organically generate a new interior public space by drawing a North/South and East/West cross, a new cultural agora for Brussels. The iconic showroom on Place de l'Yser will be returned to the people of Brussels in its original state as it will once again become the 21-metre cathedral of steel, glass and light designed and built by André Citroën. KANAL proposes a new open, visible and welcoming scene to all. The building will be at the forefront of the cultural city imagined from the beginning, offering multi-purpose spaces that can simultaneously host performances, exhibitions, workshops, shows, conferences and many more. With 11,300 m2 of exhibition space for the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, 1,800 m2 dedicated to CIVA exhibitions, 5,000 m2 of archives, the public library, multiple

workshop spaces, 2 auditoriums, multi-purpose spaces, 3 bars, and a restaurant, KANAL positions itself as an organic living space, alive, flexible and open to Brussels, Belgium, Europe and the world.

2. NOTE BY YVES GOLDSTEIN, DIRECTOR KANAL FOUNDATION This is not an epilogue. These last 14 months of « Kanal Brut » were only just the beginning of the adventure. And this adventure consists, among many others, in the transformation of the Citroën garage at Place de l’Yser in a 40,000 m2 cultural city, equipped with an innovative museum infrastructure whilst absolutely preserving the authentic industrial « spirit » of the place. In April 2017, we launched an international architecture competition in which 92 teams (Belgian, European and international) participated. In March 2018, the 7 shortlisted teams were called to present their vision on this future cultural city for a jury presided by Roger Diener (whom I want to thank personally for his investment during this fundamental stage of the project). Following the unanimous advice of the jury, Fondation Kanal has appointed « Atelier Kanal » consisting of architects’ studios Noa (Belgium), Sergison Bates (Great-Britain) and EM2N (Switzerland), to complete this transformation. Installed on site, close to the Fondation Kanal’s offices and « directly inspired » by the experiments of Kanal Brut, the architects of Atelier Kanal were constantly working on and further developing the elements that eventually convinced the jury: creating a major public space which embraces the new museum infrastructure (a museum of modern and contemporary art and the Fondation CIVA) which will be located in the workshop spaces whilst preserving the spirit of this exceptional industrial space. The design of this garage, based on sketches by André Citroën himself, was completed in 1935 and was above all considered by its developer as a true demo space of the creativity and innovation the Citroën company stood for. This is exactly what Atelier Kanal understood so well by proposing to maintain the entire existing structure, which will serve as a framework for the spatial organization of the place, in particular by creating large interior streets in the workshop by means of drawing a North/South and East/West axis which will organically generate a new interior public space and a new cultural agora for Brussels. This iconic showroom on Place de l'Yser will be returned in its original state to everyone in Brussels as the 21-metre cathedral of steel, glass and light, designed and built by André Citroën. This new space will be the symbol of this KANAL project, this will to create an open, visible “new stage” welcoming Brussels and all its inhabitants. The works have to start in autumn 2019 and we will do everything possible to open this new cultural city in the first semester of 2023.

The Kanal Foundation

Created by the Brussels-Capital Region, the KANAL Foundation’s first mission is to successfully carry out the conversion of the Citroën garage located on Place de l’Yser into a major cultural hub of the capital of Europe. The site will host a museum of modern and contemporary art (in partnership with the Centre Pompidou), a museum of architecture (in partnership with the CIVA Foundation) as well as many public spaces devoted to the performing arts, screenings, debates and leisure. By becoming the largest cultural institution of Brussels, the Kanal Foundation seeks to promote modern and contemporary art, as well as architecture, through the creation of exhibitions and the display of varied artistic practices. Throughout its mission, it will pay close attention to research and to projects intended to make contemporary art more accessible to the general public. Brussels having become a major centre of artistic creation, the Kanal Foundation will also ensure the promotion of Brussels-based artists. For the constitution of the first part of its collection, it has called on artists from the Brussels scene and will develop this vision in the future.

The Centre Pompidou

The Centre Pompidou is a major multidisciplinary cultural institution. Housed in Paris in an iconic architectural design by Renzo Piano and Richard Rogers, the Centre Pompidou hosts one of the world’s most important museums, home to the leading collection of modern and contemporary art in Europe as well as to a research library on art from the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Throughout the year, the Centre Pompidou presents a programme of films, shows and educational activities. It is also associated with a public reading library and a musical research institute (IRCAM). Currently consisting of more than 120,000 works, the collection of the Musée national d’art moderne constitutes, within the Centre Pompidou, a global reference for art of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. From the great historic funds to the latest acquisitions, the collection of the Musée national d’art moderne covers visual arts, photography, experimental cinema, new media, architecture, design and industrial planning.

An exchange platform between society and contemporary art, the Centre Pompidou is a resolutely popular centre that welcomes more than 3 million visitors each year. Working in close collaboration with creators from all disciplines, its mission is to offer an ever-broader public the keys to understanding art of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.

Brussels’ Architecture Centre CIVA

CIVA is a museum, an archive centre, a library, a place to meet and debate, for all people that are passionate about contemporary and modern architecture, landscape architecture and urban ecosystems in Brussels. The centre organises exhibitions, lectures, debates, guided tours, book launches and activities for children, all throughout the year. All CIVA events take place in Ixelles, near Flagey, and at KANAL.
