Dear Young Trailblazers, Today, we live in a world that is disrupted by new technologies and digital applications. Ride-sharing services like Grab are ubiquitous; video streaming service Netflix has revolutionized the entertainment industry and collaborative commerce like Airbnb has taken the e-commerce and retail sectors by storm. While disruptions have displaced many people from their jobs and swatted traditional businesses, yet we can see disruption as the eruption of new opportunities. Acorn Training’s mission as organizer of Prudential Young Trailblazers is to nurture a buoyant generation ready to take on the challenges of the new world. The theme for 2020 competition is “where ideas turn R.E.A.L.” Our focus is to bring as many of your ideas to the market. To achieve this, the competition will look into:

1. Relevance to human needs

- Great innovation does not just happen, it is carefully designed to meet the human needs. Hence, we seek to create the starting point of innovation by deeply understanding those needs.

2. Enriching the participants

- Strategic creativity is not random; it comes about through effective processes. By understanding the processes that will help unlock strategic creativity, participants experience an enriching and empowering journey in this competition.

3. Adding value to the market

- The competition seeks to help teams create new customer value by spotting uncontested areas of innovation. The outcome is the creation of many new possibilities.

4. Lean methods to success

- Speed matters more than size for today’s start-ups. Hence, we equip teams with methods to accelerate the development of their product from innovation to implementation.

On behalf of the organizing committee, we wish you a R.E.A.L. trailblazing experience.

Yours Sincerely,

Elmer Lau Training Director, Acorn Training Pte Ltd Organizer of Prudential Young Trailblazers

Business Pitch (For Finalists)

Finalists will be judged on their 3 minutes pitch followed by 2 minutes of Q&A from Judges’ panel.

Judging Criteria of the Business Pitch

1. Communication of problem and solution concisely

2. Persuasiveness

3. Effective use of visual aids

4. Good use of time allocated

The Business Pitch is an opportunity for the students to try and sell their idea to get the judges motivated to explore the idea in greater detail; and to make the judges consider “investing” in their company. During the interview/Q&A, the judges will probe deeper into the idea and business to find out if the students have a good knowledge of their idea and their business. This allows the judges to understand a given potential capital injection, how the participants will use the capital in the company and what the Return on Investment is likely to be. The judges will also be able to see how the students handle presentation and questions under pressure.

Intellectual Property As you embark on this journey of innovation and entrepreneurship, you will find that your

ideas both need to be shared publicly as well as be protected wisely. This process is about understanding your Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs).

Intellectual Property (IP) refers to the ownership of a creative work, whether it is an expression or solution to a problem. IPRs serves to protect the value of such IPs. It encourages greater creativity and innovation in society by ensuring that the creators of the IPs get to reap the benefits of their work or contribution made.

There are many forms of IPRs. The common ones are:

1. Patents: protects the functional expression of an idea.

E.g. Machines, methods, processes, manufacturing process, composition of matter or the improvements of any of these items, etc.

2. Copyrights: protects the specific creative expression of an idea through a medium of artistic or creative expression.

E.g. Paintings, photographs, sculpture, writings, software, etc.

3. Trademarks: protects any symbol that indicates the source or origin of the goods or services to which it represents. The main purpose of a trademark is to protect the consumers by informing them where the goods or services originate from. This provides them with prior knowledge regarding the reputation or marketing of the origination of the goods or service.

E.g. Brand logo, tag phrases, etc.

Eventually, when your team discovers the next big idea, creates the next new expression or product, or even creates a new brand name, you will want to have your IPs protected and respected. To find out more, please refer to https://www.ipos.gov.sg/understanding-innovation-ip to get an understanding of innovation and IP in the Singapore setting.

Likewise, it is important to remember that whenever an idea, product or even symbol is taken as a building block of your IP, a referencing to where the source originates from must be made. You may use your own preferred referencing format, just as long as the proper credit due is given.
